POPULARITY
This week has been a brutal reminder of how politics and politicians like to work and be seen. How important it is to be the centre of attention, to be seen to be ‘doing' - even if it's just for appearances and there's little evidence of a real productive outcome. Whether it's destabilizing global economic and trade order, championing legislation that's dead on arrival, or feeling the need to speak for 25 hours straight, it has definitely been a fascinating week in politics. But for all the attention seeking, polarisation and stoking of grievances, there's also been some good work going on. This week, David Seymour announced the weight-loss drug Wegovy has been approved by Medsafe, with its producer hoping to make it available in New Zealand as soon as possible. Wegovy is like the celebrity-championed Ozempic - it's a semaglutide injection that acts to regulate appetite by increasing the feeling of fullness and reducing food cravings. Unlike Ozempic, which is approved in New Zealand to treat type 2 diabetes, Wegovy is approved just as a weight loss drug. I've very much sat on the fence when it comes to these drugs - like many people, including author Johann Hari, who has used Ozempic and written at length about it in his best-selling book Magic Pill. He cites the many concerns around the use of this drug - including its wide availability in parts of the world, its impact on eating disorders, or those who don't really need it. Then there's the long list of side effects and the possibility you might need to stay on it for life to maintain your weight. And then there's the simple boredom of living life without an appetite. But if you use this drug selectively on people who have exhausted other means of losing weight and are facing serious health issues - it could be a massive game changer for our health system. It was a cardiologist involved in heart transplants who convinced me of the importance of access to drugs like Wegovy. She told me it could be the one thing which stops a heart transplant being the only option left for her patients. I've had GPs say to me that this could have a huge impact on reducing type 2 diabetes, orthopaedic issues, cancer, and strokes. They are not saying it should be available for every obese New Zealander - that would be 1 in 3 adults - but for patients with chronic complex conditions. But here's the thing - at this stage Pharmac is not funding the drug, and it is cost prohibitive. Wegovy is available in Australia, it costs NZ$497 per month for the recommended dose required to have the best weight management outcome. So, serious work needs to go into assessing the benefit a drug such as this could have on reducing the burden on our health system. If the benefits outweigh the costs, then it needs to be funded by Pharmac as soon as possible. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Eveyone wants a quick fix when it comes to fitness. But, there is none. No pill, protein or supplement is going to do what hard work and consistency are there for. Tune in today to hear what I mean.
In this episode, I'm going to be talking about the concept of the "magic pill" and I'm going to be especially using it to talk about risk for HPV-related cancer, specifically cervical cancer in women. But I encourage you to listen in regardless of what health issue you're dealing with to better understand the mindset, perspective, and paradigm shift that I see my patients making in order to truly transform their health. The magic pill concept is about a fictional or hypothetical medication that can miraculously heal or cure any kind of health issue from a single pill without any side effects or limitations. I think we can all relate to this – we would all love it if there was some magic pill we could swallow that takes away all of our pain, whether physical or emotional, cancer risk, or whatever troubles we're experiencing in our life. Wouldn't that be amazing if we could just take a pill and it all goes away? When we get a headache, we immediately think, "Where's that pill I could take to make the headache go away?" Sometimes it works – we take a pill and the headache disappears. The problem is if we get a headache every day and take that pill every day, eventually that pill can start to have side effects and negative impacts on our bodies. At that point, even if that pill is taking our headache away, it might be causing a stomachache, for example. This is the limitation of taking a medication or substance we often turn to for a quick fix. As humans, we have to learn to stop ourselves from chasing that next shiny object, hoping that one thing is going to fix everything and we're never going to have to think about it again. We need to realize that the reality is that most often, things are not really fixed with a magic pill. They're more often resolved with true intention and transformation. With the rise of these medications, many are questioning their effectiveness, safety, and ethics. Are they a miracle solution for those struggling with weight loss, or do they come with hidden dangers? We'll explore both sides of the conversation!

Dyllon and I sit down and discuss everything from the basics to the more complex aspects of GLP-1's and medications like Ozempic. We look at: What is it? What is GLP-1 as a whole? What's the acronym stand for? Do we produce it naturally? If so, why are we suggesting people get a shot to get more of it? What was it originally intended and created for? Why does it seem to be magic for WEIGHT LOSS? What are the obvious or hidden upsides? What are the obvious or hidden downsides? How long can a person take it? Can they live on it forever? Does the body naturally produce less if it's getting some from other sources? Will appetite increase once they come off? Is there extra concern for muscle loss while on them? Is that concern warranted? How can you make sure to mitigate that loss? Is there a way to maintain productive levels of energy while taking them? Sounds like a free lunch- something bad has to be lurking….right? and MUCH, much more! Click here to check out more from Valley to Peak.
https://www.youtube.com/live/mTyHU0ZwcjI Imagine sitting across from someone confidently telling you, “You can be your own bank. No more reliance on traditional banks, no credit checks, and complete control over your finances—all while your money grows tax-free.” At first, it might sound too good to be true, like a fairy tale in the world of finance. That's where Becca started, skeptical and ready to dismiss the idea entirely. But as she dug deeper, she couldn't deny the transformative power of the concept. Today, we're breaking down what it truly means to have access to cash and how it can reshape your financial future. Why Access to Cash Matters1. The Misconception: Infinite Banking as a “Magic Pill”2. Understanding Opportunity Cost3. Breaking Free from Traditional Banking4. The Power of Collateralized Loans5. Building Generational Wealth5. The Process vs. the ProductWhy This MattersBook A Strategy Call Why Access to Cash Matters Access to cash isn't just about liquidity—it's about control, empowerment, and freedom. Whether you're running a business, planning for retirement, or preparing for life's surprises, having a reliable system to manage and grow your money is a game changer. In this article, we'll explore the misconceptions about the Infinite Banking Concept, unpack how it truly works, and show how it can offer you financial peace of mind. By the end, you'll understand why Infinite Banking isn't just a product or a buzzword but a disciplined process that can provide stability and opportunity for you and future generations. 1. The Misconception: Infinite Banking as a “Magic Pill” A common critique of Infinite Banking is the belief that it's simply an easy-access cash machine for undisciplined spenders. Critics argue that it promotes financial irresponsibility, allowing people to bypass traditional financial discipline. Reality Check: Infinite Banking is a process, not a product. It's not about avoiding discipline but embracing it. It encourages building financial reserves systematically, using specially designed whole life insurance policies as a foundation. These policies offer guaranteed growth, liquidity, and flexibility, but only if you're committed to the discipline of funding them. 2. Understanding Opportunity Cost Most people don't realize that every dollar spent is a dollar that could have earned compound interest. This is known as opportunity cost. When you borrow from traditional banks or pay cash for big purchases, you're either paying interest to someone else or forfeiting the interest your money could have earned. Infinite Banking changes that equation. By storing your money in a whole life insurance policy, you not only retain access to it but also allow it to continue growing uninterrupted. This “dual benefit” is what makes the strategy so powerful. Over time, the uninterrupted compound growth within your policy creates a financial reservoir that amplifies your wealth while maintaining access to cash. 3. Breaking Free from Traditional Banking Traditional banking systems are built on misaligned incentives. Banks profit from your money while you bear the risks and limitations. When you deposit money into a bank, it's no longer yours in a practical sense—it becomes a liability for the bank to manage. With Infinite Banking, you flip the script. As a policyholder and participant in a mutual insurance company, you own the banking function. You earn dividends, maintain control over your capital, and have the freedom to decide repayment terms on policy loans. This alignment of interests ensures that your financial priorities are not at odds with the institution holding your money. 4. The Power of Collateralized Loans One of the most misunderstood aspects of Infinite Banking is the policy loan feature. Critics may say, “Why borrow your own money?” But the key is that you're not borrowing your money—you're using it as collateral to access the insurance com...
In this insightful episode, I sit down with Dr. Charles Cavo to explore the growing use of GLP-1 receptor agonists like Ozempic and dive into their benefits and considerations in metabolic treatments. Dr. Cavo shares valuable insights from his work at the metabolic center in Connecticut, explaining the complexities of modern weight management medications and why lifestyle integration is essential for achieving sustainable results. He makes a strong case for the power of personalized healthcare strategies and the broader metabolic advantages of these treatments—especially in preventing dementia and reducing chronic disease risk. We also explore natural ways to enhance GLP-1 production, including supplements like allulose, berberine, and green tea extract, along with exercise and dietary adjustments. Dr. Cavo takes us through the importance of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for women's health, debunking myths and clarifying its role. He also discusses pregnancy and menopause, emphasizing how tailored medical care is key to navigating these transitions. This episode is packed with essential insights, blending conventional and holistic approaches to help you optimize your health. Key Takeaways: GLP-1 receptor agonists are transformative in addressing metabolic dysfunction but must be paired with lifestyle changes for effective, lasting results. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is crucial for mitigating menopausal symptoms and offers various health benefits, including decreased risks of dementia and diabetes. Natural supplements like allulose and berberine can simulate GLP-1 effects, offering a less invasive path for improving metabolic health. For women's health, particularly during menopausal transitions, focus on resistance training, adequate protein intake, and ensuring gut health is emphasized by Dr. Carvo. The upcoming Metabolic Health Resort aims to provide a health-focused sanctuary for recovery and lifestyle change, free from processed food distractions. More About Dr. Charles Cavo: Dr. Charles Cavo is a distinguished leader in obesity medicine and women's health, with a particular focus on the metabolic challenges of perimenopause and menopause, such as weight gain and insulin resistance. With over 20 years as a board-certified OB/GYN and a decade of experience in bariatric medicine, Dr. Cavo is dedicated to delivering personalized, science-based care that empowers patients to take charge of their health. As the co-founder and Chief Medical Officer of Pounds Transformation, Dr. Cavo has helped countless individuals achieve their health and wellness goals through innovative, individualized approaches. His commitment to holistic care extends to his partnership with RENOVI Recovery, a cutting-edge metabolic recovery destination in the Dominican Republic, where he advances transformative solutions for metabolic health. Dr. Cavo's influence also spans the industry, serving as Chief Clinical Practitioner for RxSugar, a Scientific Board member for Avalon Globocare (creators of KetoAir), and a partner in Morphood AI and CT Women's Health. Featured in the Netflix documentary The Magic Pill, he combines his extensive expertise with a passion for education, innovation, and empowering lasting change. We're back to finish up our chat on the “magical wonder drug,” so now is your warning: if you didn't catch last week's episode, go back and listen now!Last week, we learned of the benefits and some of the risks associated with Ozempic and other semaglutide medications. Today, Johann, author of Magic Pill, shares some more of the risks, like the increased risk of cancer and the unknown effects of long-term use.Yes, long-term use. One of the scariest things about Ozempic is that you will have to take it for the rest of your life (or you risk gaining back all the weight and the associated health risks of obesity). Is it possible to get off the drug? To maintain progress? Johann and I discuss the most important piece of this answer: stopping obesity at the root.So why are people obese? There are many factors, but we look into the interesting comparison of obesity rates in Japan (a shockingly or maybe not so shockingly low 4%) and the mega-high rate of North America (42%, you read that right—nearly half).Johann got a first-hand look at the way Japan's government and food industry support the health of it's citizens. Some are great that we should consider emulating on our side of the globe, like heavily structured food plans and food education in schools by a registered nutritionist, and others maybe not so much (some of you would definitely cringe at a yearly weigh in your company office). We also cover a controversial topic: the shame of using a weight-loss drug. Johann shares an amazing metaphor: If your house is on fire, you're not debating rebuilding with less flammable materials; you're putting the damn fire out. You can worry about the other stuff later.Obesity is the fire, people! It's risky, it's dangerous, and it's life-threatening. Tackling the food industry and your eating and exercise habits can come next, and it needs to so we can protect our kids from the same fate. The idea behind the use of Ozempic and these similar drugs is to save people from obesity and the medical conditions obesity causes. Less obesity means not just more life but a more joyful life. Like a 103-year-old Japanese woman dancing in a beautiful red kimono.Johann and I talk very seriously about the importance of regulating prescriptions and being very careful about who uses this drug.Is Ozempic safe? The truth is, it's complicated. It will save people, it will kill people, and some people will be muddled in between. If you're interested in this topic, have questions, or just want to know more, be sure to check out Magic Pill by Johann Hari wherever you buy books. What's Inside:The risks of long term use of Ozempic and other similar drugs.Obesity in Japan; how the government changed their food culture. Why you shouldn't be ashamed of using a weight loss drug.Is Ozempic safe?Stopping obesity at the root, looking at the food industry. What an important conversation to have about the future of public health and these scientific breakthroughs in weight loss drugs! Ozempic…the magic medicine that's gaining traction around the world. In fact, the science and impact behind Ozempic and other medications like it are changing the world in ways we haven't seen since the invention of the smartphone. Now, I thought I didn't have much interest in or care about this wave of “magic” weight loss, but when I read Magic Pill by Johann Hari, I knew I had to have him on the show!Johann himself is an Ozempic success story, completely reversing his own obesity in the first year of taking it. What he's learned about the science and the reality this drug is creating will totally shock you.First, let's talk about something important: Body Positivity. Everyone deserves to and should love themselves, but health at any size is not something supported by science, and to put it simply, obesity is bad (even deadly) for your health. That brings us to two HUGE benefits of Ozempic. ONE…it dramatically reduces and reverses obesity.TWO…it MASSIVELY reverses health conditions associated with obesity. These benefits are and will continue to be an insane shake-up to the future of public health but also the economic industries affected by these changes (Listen to hear for yourself, Krispy Kreme, yeah, sure, that makes sense. Knee replacement hinges, yeah, that tracks. JET FUEL? JEWELERS? The reach is far wider than you or I even realize). So how does this magic drug work? Well, it's a shot you inject in your stomach or leg that introduces an artificial dose of GLP1 (that's the hormone that puts the brakes on you when you're full, like a little tap on your shoulder to tell you it's time to put down that tub of chicken). This hormone allows you to be full faster, but not only that, some optimistic science might lead us to believe this is a self control drug, as some users report reduced use of drugs, alcohol, and other addictive substances and behaviors. Okay, so you're telling me... In 10 years, everyone will be skinny, and no one will have an addiction? Sign me up! Unfortunately, along with these astonishing benefits come some really disturbing risks. We touch on a few, including malnutrition due to dosing issues. And Johann opens up about his experience with the psychological ramifications of having previously relied on food as a coping mechanism.And... that's where we stop. Sorry for the cliffhanger but you have to come back next week to hear the full scope of risks, who's a good (OR BAD) candidate for the drug, and how we can nip the problem of obesity right at the root. What's Inside:What is Ozempic and how does it work?Is Ozempic (and similar medications) going to change the world? The impact of reversing obesity on public health and the economy. The astonishing benefits and disturbing risks of Ozempic.Wow! This opened my eyes to so much about the drug, Ozempic, and we've still got Part 2 next week! So I know that reducing and reversing obesity is good, but I never realized the insane reach it would have on the economy. What surprised you the most about the science and effects of Ozempic? Today, we continue our conversation with Johann Hari. Part of Johann's journey in writing The Magic Pill was to visit Japan, one of the wealthiest countries in the world with virtually no childhood obesity. His biggest questions: Why and how? From the way the Japanese educate their children about nutrition, to draconian practices in Japanese workplaces, it appears that there are solutions to our current obesogenic environment, although some measures may be shocking. To hear the rest of this week's bonus episode, come join the Foodie Fam!https://www.patreon.com/FWNTTThank you for your support, it's what keeps the show going!Check out our book:https://read.macmillan.com/lp/food-we-need-to-talk/Chat with us on IG!https://www.instagram.com/foodweneedtotalk/?hl=enBe friends with Juna on IG and Tiktok!https://www.instagram.com/theofficialjuna/https://www.tiktok.com/@junagjata

Today, we speak to Johann Hari, author of the new book The Magic Pill. The new weight loss medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy have been exploding in popularity over the past couple of years. Unlike dieting, these drugs can cause rapid weight loss with seemingly little effort from the person taking them. However, they also come with a wide array of risks that don't often get discussed. What are the implications these medications have for people with eating disorders? Why are they associated with drastic muscle mass loss? Why are some scientists warning about their affect on depression? Obesity has many risks, but so do these medications. Today, we discuss the complex calculation posed by the new weight loss medications. On this show, we talk a lot about ways to stop the interpersonal and intrapersonal violence of obsessing about thinness. Today's episode, though, is a bit of a departure… because this whole dynamic and debate has been deeply disrupted by the advent of Ozempic and other new weight loss drugs, which are technically called GLP1s. This is a controversial and touchy subject, to say the least. Journalist and best-selling author Johann Hari discusses his latest book Magic Pill: The Extraordinary Benefits and Disturbing Risks of the New Weight-Loss Drugs. He believes drugs like Ozempic are the equivalent of the invention of the iPhone – and will impact all of our lives, whether we like it or not, and whether we take them or not. And in Magic Pill, Hari – who somewhat ambivalently takes Ozempic himself – marinates in the complexity of all of this. This is Hari's third time on the show. He has come on before to discuss his books on distraction and depression—entitled Stolen Focus and Lost Connections. This is the latest episode of our Get Fit Sanely series. This is the third time we've done Get Fit Sanely, and in this go-round, we'll be covering longevity, exercise, and the Buddhist case for laziness. Are new weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy "magic" pills that can put an end to the obesity epidemic? Johann Hari is here to give us the skinny! What We Discuss with Johann Hari: Processed and ultra-processed foods are a major driver of the obesity epidemic, as they undermine the body's natural ability to feel full and satisfied after eating. Moving from fresh, whole foods to mostly processed foods is strongly linked to the dramatic rise in obesity rates. Obesity is a complex issue with biological, psychological, and social causes. Factors like genetics, emotional eating, trauma, and the food environment all play a role. Stigmatizing or shaming people for their weight is cruel and counterproductive. New weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy work by artificially boosting satiety hormones like GLP-1, helping people feel full faster and eat less. They are showing impressive weight loss results, but also come with potential risks and side effects that are not yet fully understood, especially in the long-term. While these new drugs may help many people, they are not a magic solution. They don't address the underlying drivers of the obesity crisis in the food system and environment. To make a real difference, we need broader changes to make healthy eating the easy, default option. The good news is, each of us can take positive steps today to improve our health, no matter our current weight. Focus on adding more whole, minimally processed foods to your diet, and find physical activities you truly enjoy. Prioritize getting good sleep, managing stress, and building a strong social support network. Small, sustainable lifestyle changes can make a big difference over time. Be patient and kind with yourself in the process. You have the power to transform your health, one choice at a time. And much more...
