Four years ago the writer and broadcaster Naga Munchetty spoke out on air about her own awful experience of getting a coil fitted, and received a huge response from listeners. It led to her talking about her debilitating periods and an eventual diagnosis with adenomyosis aged 47. She's written about this and included the experiences of other women. Naga speaks to Anita Rani to discuss her book ‘It's probably nothing': Critical conversations on the women's health crisis. Robert Francis Prevost has been chosen as the new Pope and will be known as Leo XIV. He is the first American to fill the role of pope, although he is considered as much a cardinal from Latin America because of the many years he spent as a missionary in Peru. Anita is joined by Kate McElwee, the executive director of the Women's Ordination Conference, that calls for women's ordination and gender equity in the Roman Catholic Church and Ruth Gledhill Assistant Editor at The Tablet to discuss where he stands in the context women and the church.Planning a wedding can be stressful, but what if you begin to question your relationship as the big day approaches? How do you know if it's just nerves? And what if you realise that you're not happy, that your engagement needs to end, and that you have to cancel your wedding? Anita talks to beauty and lifestyle creator Katie Snooks who cancelled her wedding in 2017 and to couples therapist Joanna Harrison about managing the emotional and practical fall-out of cancelling your wedding.Laura Aikman discusses her role in new drama Suspect, which tells the story of Jean Charles de Menezes, who was shot by police at Stockwell tube station in 2005. He was mistaken for a terror suspect in the aftermath of London's 7/7 bombings. Laura plays Lana Vandenberghe in the Disney+ drama, a Canadian secretary at the Independent Police Complaints Commission who became a whistleblower, leaking documents to a TV news producer which showed a discrepancy between what the police knew and what was being reported at the time. Laura also recently starred in BBC crime drama This City is Ours and surprised Gavin and Stacey fans by returning as Smithy's fiancé for the recent Christmas finale, watched by more than 19 million people.

Kicking off with the announcement that their live event at the Mitchell Library has sold out, they humorously banter about their upcoming appearances and the success of their TikTok video, which garnered nearly 60,000 views. The conversation transitions into serious territory as they delve into the latest work of their Deep Dive team, reviewing landmark cases such as Colin Pitchfork's, the first murder case solved using DNA. Tom elaborates on the significance of DNA in modern investigations and its dual role in convicting criminals and exonerating the innocent. The duo also discusses the London bombings, their impact on police procedures, and the tragic errors like the mistaken shooting of Jean Charles de Mendez. The historical “Siege of Sydney Street” is revisited, highlighting early 20th-century anarchist activities and the birth of media spectacles around crime. Next, they explore the profound ramifications of the Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman murder case by Ian Huntley, emphasizing how it exposed systemic flaws in intelligence sharing. Tom narrates the gripping 'Leith Outrages' case, an 1881 series of crimes committed by Australian outlaws in Edinburgh, underscoring the tenacity of the Leith Borough Police. Concluding with the 1968 Democratic National Convention riots in Chicago, they reflect on effective crowd control tactics and the consequences of Mayor Richard Daley's confrontational approach. This week on Louisiana Considered, we are bringing you the new podcast, “Leaving the Island,” a story about the nation's first attempt to relocate an entire community due to climate change. Today we'll hear the first part of episode one.In 2016, Louisiana received $48 million from the federal government to move the residents of Isle de Jean Charles, a small barrier island at the tip of Terrebonne Parish that has become uninhabitable due to climate change. This resettlement was seen as a pilot program that other communities in need of relocation could replicate. Today, we'll learn what made the Island residents decide to leave their beloved home. But first, we hear from podcast host and journalist Olga Loginova about how she first became interested in this story, and what she hopes this podcast can accomplish.—“Leaving The Island” is an Audiation Original Production, produced in partnership with the nonprofit newsroom Type Investigations. In this episode, we journey through the fascinating and often surprising history of Scotland Yard, the iconic home of the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS). Inspired by last week's episode about the haunting tales of the Tower of London, we shift focus to uncover the evolution of law enforcement in London. From the chaotic days of watchmen during the 18th century gin craze to the formation of the Bow Street Runners and ultimately Sir Robert Peel's revolutionary vision for modern policing, we explore how the MPS came to be.But history isn't always pretty, and neither is policing. Alongside the famed rooftop firing ranges and Houdini escapades, we dive into controversies and tragedies, from the wrongful shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes to the horrific murder of Sarah Everard by a serving officer. We discuss how these events have shaped public perception of the force and the reforms still needed today.Along the way, we share quirky anecdotes about Scotland Yard's Black Museum, rooftop firing ranges, and connections to the Beatles. Plus, you'll hear about trailblazing figures like Edith Smith, the UK's first female officer with arrest powers, and the challenges she faced during World War I. Come along with us as discuss:The Origins of Policing in London: From the medieval constables and watchmen to the Bow Street Runners and their drunken escapades.Scotland Yard's Iconic History: Why it's called Scotland Yard (spoiler: it has nothing to do with Scotland), its evolution, and its global cultural impact. The Quirks of Crime Fighting: Tales from the Black Museum and a few blunders, including a painting heist that left Scotland Yard red-faced.Pivotal Moments in Policing: How the world wars, the development of forensics, and societal shifts influenced Scotland Yard's role and structure.Women in Policing: The trailblazing work of Edith Smith and the shift toward gender equality in law enforcement roles.Controversies and Tragedies: The cases of Jean Charles de Menezes and Sarah Everard and their lasting impacts on public trust and police accountability.Whether you're a history buff, a true-crime aficionado, or someone fascinated by the inner workings of iconic institutions, this episode offers a deep dive into the stories that shaped one of the most recognized police forces in the world. Louisiana's coast sits at the mouth of the Mississippi River. The largest discharge basin in the United States, the Mississippi collects runoff from 41% of the nation's rivers and delivers it into the Gulf of Mexico. Where this freshwater meets the ocean, randomly deposited mounds of river sediment form a large, well-inhabited delta that is constantly reordering itself.   To assert permanence upon this fluid landform and to stop severe flooding of riverine communities, the US Army Corps of Engineers introduced the Mississippi River Tributaries Program in 1927. Over the course of four decades, a labyrinth of concrete levees, floodways, reservoirs and pumping stations were constructed in an attempt to control the river.    Today, these interventions along the Mississippi are inadvertently leading to greater flooding by preventing the natural process of sediment flow and the formation of new wetlands. Faced with this challenge, as well as the fastest rate of climate-induced sea level rise in the world—the Louisiana delta is quickly receding. In fact as Beaux Jones, president and CEO of The Water Institute shared, the state “loses roughly the equivalent of a football field every 100 minutes.”  This land loss is so great, that the nation's first official climate refugees hail from a now-deserted island in southern Louisiana: Isle de Jean Charles. Louisiana resident and writer Nathaniel Rich recently commented in The New York Times that evidence suggests New Orleans may not be far behind.  The urgent challenge of protecting the habitation of Louisiana's coast reminds us that climate change impacts are not a far-off abstraction or that resilience is a distant need; it is a daily reality for those in Gulf Coast.  Listen in as Ten Across founder Duke Reiter and Beaux Jones, president and CEO of The Water Institute, explore how this Baton Rouge-based research center is gathering the best coastal hydrologic data and experts, and sharing their methodologies with the US Army Corps of Engineers and many impacted communities in the I-10 corridor to assist them in critical decision making and resilience planning.  Relevant links and resources:  Learn more about how The Water Institute is helping the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers update their benefit-cost analysis for climate adaptive infrastructure.  Resilient Jacksonville: the award-winning resilience plan from the City of Jacksonville, with research support provided by the Institute  Learn more about The Water Institute's work at the forefront of quantifying the impacts of compound flooding.

In this episode, Cecilie & Jesper Conrad sit down with Rebecca Jean-Charles to explore the concept of Edugenic Harm—how traditional education systems inadvertently harm children by normalizing control, disconnection, and compliance. Through personal stories and reflections, we unpacks our journeys from the conventional school system to homeschooling and unschooling.Edugenic Harm refers to the subtle, systemic ways in which traditional schooling undermines children's autonomy, emotional well-being, and connection to their natural instincts, conditioning them to accept control and compliance as normal.Key Points Discussed:Lack of Consent in EducationThe mandatory nature of schooling removes children's choice, creating a system where autonomy is disregarded from an early age.Disconnection from Basic NeedsSchools often restrict children's ability to listen to their bodies, whether it's moving, resting, eating, or expressing emotions, leading to a disconnection from natural instincts.Normalization of ControlDrawing parallels between school and abusive relationships, showing how constant oversight, judgment, and invalidation of feelings can lead to internalized submission and fear of mistakes.Gaslighting of Emotional ExperiencesHow children's emotions are dismissed ("It's not that bad" or "You'll understand later"), teaching them to mistrust their own feelings. The Long-Term Impact of Edugenic HarmHow this conditioning in childhood can lead to accepting unhealthy patterns in adult life, including abusive relationships or toxic workplaces. The Alternative: Unschooling and FreedomRebecca shares her personal transformation and how unschooling her children became a journey of healing, freedom, and connection.Follow Rebecca Jean-Charles:https://www.facebook.com/RebeccaJeanCharleshttps://www.instagram.com/ittakesavillage.sehttps://ittakesavillage.se/Send us a text Support the showPODCAST INFOPodcast website: http://theconrad.family/podcast YouTube Full Episodes: https://www.youtube.com/theconradfamily365Apple Podcasts: https://www.theconrad.family/apple Spotify: https://theconrad.family/spotify RSS: https://theconrad.family/rss SUPPORT & CONNECTSupport on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Theconradfamily Share a review: https://www.theconrad.family/review-our-podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theconrad.familyFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theconradfamilyTwitter: https://twitter.com/theconradfamily
