Adagio molto e cantabile" (mp3) from "Beethoven's 9th Symphony: 1895 Gustav Mahler Orchestration" (Bridge Records, Inc.) Mahler adds occasional counter-melodies and thickens the scoring in order to create his own heightened dynamic scale. Of his own performances of this re-scoring, Mahler wrote: "Far from following any arbitrary purpose or course, but also without allowing himself to be led astray by tradition, (this conductor) was constantly and solely concerned with carrying out Beethoven’s wishes in their minutest detail, and ensuring that nothing the master intended should be sacrificed or drowned out amid the general confusion of sound."San Francisco Symphony, Michael Tilson Thomas "Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67" (mp3) from "Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 and Piano Concerto No. 4" (San Francisco Symphony) Buy at iTunes Music Store Buy at Amazon MP3 More On This AlbumThe San Francisco Symphony and Michael Tilson Thomas present Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 and Beethoven's 4th Piano Concerto featuring pianist Emanuel Ax.Jan Willem de Vriend, The Netherlands Symphony Orchestra "Symphony no. 7 op. 92 in A major: Allegro con brio" (mp3) from "Beethoven: Symphonies nos. 7&8 - Complete symphonies vol.3" (Challenge Classics) Buy at iTunes Music Store Buy at Amazon MP3 More On This AlbumManchester Camerata, Douglas Boyd "Symphony No. 6 in F Major, Op. 68 - "Pastoral"" (mp3) from "Beethoven: Symphony Nos. 6 & 8" (AVIE Records) More On This Album Manchester Camerata lodges the latest release in its acclaimed Beethoven Symphony cycle. Like the previous releases in this cycle these live recordings capture the spirit and freshness of these remarkable, genre-busting works, as well as the excitement, atmosphere and energy of the chamber orchestra under Music Director Douglas Boyd. Manchester Camerata has become one of the finest, most innovative chamber orchestras in the UK, and Douglas Boyd has proven to be an eminent Beethovenian. Conducting the composer’s Fidelio at the 2009 Garsington Opera Festival, The Times (London) noted “his grasp of Beethovenian idiom” and “pungent underlining of orchestral detail”, praising the musical performance as “sublime and exultant”. This is the penultimate release in the Douglas Boyd-Manchester Camerata Beethoven Symphony cycle. The Ninth “Choral” Symphony will be released in November 2011.

Works for chamber orchestra performed by the Gardner Chamber Orchestra directed by Douglas Boyd.Vaughan Williams: Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas TallisElgar: Introduction and Allegro, Op. 47The two works on this podcast have a striking number of similarities. Written at the very beginning of the 20th century, both of these works for strings exhibit a luscious, Romantic sensibility, applied to centuries-old material. Vaughan Williams takes a hymn tune by a British Renaissance composer as his starting point, while Elgar evokes the Baroque more generally, using rhythmic hemiola and incorporating a vigorous fugue. Both works also hearken back to the early form concerto grosso—using a larger orchestra paired with a smaller “solo” group. Both pieces evoke the folk music of the British Isles. Despite all the commonalities, the works undoubtedly have their own distinct character, which makes for an interesting study of the similarities and differences between these two contemporaries.

Works for solo piano performed by pianist Seymour Lipkin, and for orchestra performed by the Gardner Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Douglas Boyd.Schubert: Sonata in C minor, D. 958Schubert: Symphony No. 4 in C minor, D. 417 ("Tragic")Today’s podcast takes us on a journey through Franz Schubert’s life. The smaller forces of a chamber ensemble seem a fitting vehicle for this early orchestral work, the second piece on the podcast, which shows more connection to Haydn and Mozart than Schubert’s contemporary, Beethoven. Schubert was still a teenager at the time and, though the composer’s talent is quite evident, the piece hews closely to the traditional classical structure. Written about two months before his death, Schubert’s final piano sonatas offer a tantalizing glimpse of where the composer’s music was headed, had he lived through his 30’s. By turns stark, witty, serene, and driving, the 19th sonata still uses the traditional four-movement form while covering a wide-ranging emotional and harmonic terrain.
