Professor Anthony Kessel has a double life – or at least two very different roles. As the National Deputy Medical Director of NHS England, he's one of the senior leaders responsible for improving the quality of our health services and patient care. He's an international authority on public health and played a key role in the NHS's response to the Covid pandemic. He's also a writer, with a prize-winning series of detective novels for young adults called Don't Doubt the Rainbow – the most recent is American Mystery. The books are adventure stories and also aim to give young readers insights into how the mind works, and to improve their psychological well-being. Anthony's music choices include Brahms, Dvořák, Astor Piazzolla and Chilly Gonzales.

Send us a textWhen I heard the Chilly Gonzales song Neoclassical Massacre, I immediately got in touch with his management and label to get Gonzo on the Art of Longevity. Not only are his views on AI and background music incisive, but Gonzo has some strong opinions about the music industry and the modern culture in which it operates. The ever-evolving tension between creativity and commerce has been a career-long exploration for Gonzo. It makes him the perfect guest for The Art of Longevity. Indeed, his own career has been a perfect metaphorical rollercoaster of ups and downs. After a few years on the scene as an alternative/performance artist (which he very much is right now) he had surprise success with a quiet piano instrumental album Solo Piano (2004). Only to follow up with a full-on 70s influenced pop album, launching a brief and unspectacular phase as a major label pop artist. “That first Solo Piano surprise success was a foundational moment in encouraging me to continue to take risks. When and if I wanna go back there it will be a very beautiful thing, so long as I am doing it for the right reasons, there is something fluffy and safe about it for me.”As for the pop record Soft Power, it became his “misunderstood masterpiece”, demonstrating very nicely that you can always make failures part of your narrative after the fact. “It became an opportunity for me to make it a retrospective part of my mythology - injecting a bit of drama to my career”. Fluffy and safe isn't a typical Chilly Gonzales career choice. Indeed, on the new self-titled album, he returns to his alternative origins, rapping on most tracks. And without doubt, he is a scholar of Rap - not only on a musical level, but on a cultural level. Rap seems more influential on his career than his impeccable classical training. No other musician I can think of blends the two in such an inimitable way. Eigentlich heißt Chilly Gonzales, Jason Charles Beck, manche nennen ihn auch Gonzo – so wie er auch sein aktuelles Album getauft hat.1972 wird er in Montreal in den Schoß einer Familie geboren, dessen Mitglieder einst als aschkenasische Juden aus Ungarn geflohen waren.Sein älterer Bruder Christophe wird Filmkomponist. Chilly studiert erstmal Jazz-Piano in Montreal. Mitte/Ende der 90er veröffentlicht er zwei Alben mit der verspielten Rock-Band Son.Er ist zu dieser Zeit Teil eines Freundeskreises um die Musiker*innen Leslie Feist, Merrill Nisker alias Peaches und Dominic Salole alias Mocky. Mit denen und dem britischen Performer Jamie Lidell stürzt er sich in diverse Spielarten der Popmusik – von Elektro über Soul und Folk bis HipHop.Ab 1998 lebt er für fünf Jahre in Berlin, veröffentlicht über das damals äußerst angesagte Label Kitty-Yo seine ersten Platten. Mittlerweile umfasst sein eklektisches Schaffen über 20 Alben – darunter Kooperationen mit Boys Noize, Jarvis Cocker, Plastikman und Goldie Boutilier, sowie mehrere Werke mit klassischer Musik und Jazz.Kooperativ ist Chilly wie kein Zweiter. Man hört ihn an Keyboard, Orgel, Piano oder Percussion, als Songwriter oder Produzent auf Alben von Raz Ohara, Drake, Jane Birkin, Manu Chao, Broken Social Scene und Daft Punk.Mit Koteletten und Goldkette auf der behaarten Brust tritt Chilly gerne im Bademantel auf. Wie ein roter Faden durch sein Werk zieht sich sein herrlich exzentrischer, skurriler, ironischer Sinn für Humor. Chilly Gonzales, der bürgerlich Jason Charles Beck heißt, ist Musiker und kommt gebürtig aus Kanada. Schon in den 90er Jahren zog es Chilly nach Deutschland, damals nach Berlin – und heute lebt er in Köln. Bekannt wurde er zunächst mit elektronischer Musik, die er mit satirischem Rap kombinierte und sich selbst “The Worst MC” nannte. Vor 20 Jahren erschien dann sein Album “Solo Piano”, das man als seinen Durchbruch bezeichnen könnte. Im September erscheint Chilly neues Album “Gonzo”. Ich wollte von Chilly wissen, wie seine Geschichte seine Kunst beeinflusst hat und wie er der virtuose Musiker wurde, der er heute ist. Born in the UK, Anoushka Shankar spent her younger years in London and Delhi before moving to California. She began learning the sitar aged 9 with her father, the legendary Ravi Shankar, and made her professional debut at 13. Since then has been nominated for nine Grammys, played everywhere from the Barbican to Carnegie Hall, and worked with a wide range of artists including Herbie Hancock, Patti Smith, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Jules Buckley and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Her latest project, a mini-album titled Chapter I: Forever, For Now, comes out in October. Arooj Aftab is a Grammy award winning Pakistani-American singer, composer, and producer whose musical styles cover everything from jazz to minimalism. She's performed at Coachella, Glastonbury, and the Montreal Jazz Festival, and is also an Emmy winning documentary editor. She also produced Anouska's latest album. Lisa-Kaindé Diaz is one-half of multilingual French-Cuban duo Ibeyi, whose work fuses jazz with beats, samples, and traditional instruments. They've released three studio LPs, appeared on Beyoncé's groundbreaking visual album Lemonade, and have collaborated with Chilly Gonzales, Kamasi Washington and Jorja Smith. Nadine Shah is a Mercury Prize-nominated British singer-songwriter who has performed at Glastonbury and London's Barbican. She's supported Patti Smith, Depeche Mode and Suede, recently made her acting debut in A Midsummer Night's Dream, and is currently working on her fifth album.
