On this week's episode of The Open Mind, we invite Jean Guerrero, investigative reporter covering immigration for KPBS. Named one of “San Diego's best people” by the San Diego City Beat. Jean Guerrero is author of “Crux: A Cross-Border Memoir.” Guerrero's memoir is a spellbinding account of Mexican American heritage, a daughter's coming of age and to terms with her father's mental health, and the way forward on immigration, political reform and border security in America. Guerrero's reporting was cited by a congressional inquiry about the Trump Administration's family separations policy, months before they captured the national attention. Prior to joining our ranks in public media, Guerrero was Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones Newswire commodities correspondent in Mexico City. Together, we discuss Guerrero's childhood and her father's experience with paranoid schizophrenia. Guerrero explains that this questioning of reality informed her path to investigative journalism and interest in Mexico and Central America. Guerrero describes her relationship to Mexico throughout her life, and how the long-term effects of the current border and family separation issues.

Hello, my name is Chris. Since you’re looking for a competent financial planner, however, and these websites are supposed to impress you, let me put it like this: I have been in the financial services business since 1993, helping individuals, pre-retirees, retirees and small business owners find the right answers to their financial planning questions. I'm a Certified Financial Planner Practitioner, an Accredited Estate Planner, a Chartered Mutual Fund Counselor, and am Certified in Long-term Care. You know what, though? A lot of people have letters after their name. What they don’t necessarily have, however, is understanding, empathy, sensitivity, and a sense of humor. That’s the difference between a good financial planner, and a great financial life planner. As I mentioned in that last section, I’ve been in the financial services arena since 1993. Prior to that I was involved in advertising, sales, and since age four I’ve been playing drums (and man, are my arms tired…). It’s fascinating how all those seemingly unrelated pursuits coalesced into a unique foundation, giving me insights into a myriad of financial planning issues. For example, musicians aren’t known for making a lot of money--after playing professionally for a number of years, not only was I broke, but I was $20,000 in debt (and back in 1984 that was a lot of money!) So I know what it means to experience financial stress. I realized in what a dangerous position I had placed myself, so with the help of the financially-savvy pastor of the church I was attending I set up a payment regime. Within two years I was debt-free. So I also know what it means to overcome severe financial obstacles. Since that time my wife and I have worked hard and achieved a successful life for ourselves and our two sons. So I know the challenges of deciding the best places to invest and grow wealth. After beginning my career with Prudential Financial, I accepted the position of Regional Director for Money Concepts Capital Corp. Money Concepts has afforded me the opportunity to continue growing my practice, and in so doing, helping others to grow, too. Education 1977-79 - Centralia College, AA degree, education 1989-91 - The University of Washington, BA degree, communications 1998 - The College for Financial Planning, Chartered Mutual Fund Counselor designation 2005 - The American College, Master of Financial Services 2010 - Tacoma Covenant Bible Seminary, Master of Biblical Studies 2011 - Tacoma Covenant Bible Seminary, Master of Divinity (counseling emphasis) (By the way, those last two are so I can reassure people when they think their investments haven’t got a prayer…!) Achievements This is the section of the website where I’m supposed to impress you with all my career achievements, so here goes: I have been a qualifying member of the Million Dollar Round Table every year since 1996 with two Court of the Table honors. I have received considerable industry recognition; achieving Prudential Gold Level Financial Planner status, Presidents Hall of Honor, Prudential Masters Council, the Financial Planning Vanguard Award, several Presidents Citations, Associate of the Year, Investment Leader, Financial Planner of the year, the Distinguished Sales and Marketing Award, and Great American’s “Advantage Plus” award, among others. I have spoken to many industry and public groups over the years, written articles and been interviewed by Kiplinger’s Finance Magazine, Dow Jones Newswire and others. While a member of the Tacoma #8 Rotary Club, one of the largest in the Country, I was awarded “Rotarian of the Year.” Perhaps my most significant achievement, though (outside of marrying my wife Vicki and raising my two sons) is that in 2003 I founded a Guinness Word Record-breaking charity event I... Emotional Rescue"I will be your savior, steadfast and true."It's pretty safe to say that the Rolling Stones and George W. Bush have little in common. But when it comes to the Big Three bailout, these Mick Jagger-penned lyrics sound like a sentence that might've come from the Oval Office as the President approved the $17 billion bridge loans. Ahhh, everyone in Detroit breathes a huge sigh of relief. But how much of a rescue -- emotional or otherwise -- are the loans? As they say, be careful what you wish for.On this week's show we take a look inside the bridge loans from three different perspectives: players, participants and partisans. We start the conversation with Rep. Thaddeus McCotter, a suburban Detroit Republican who had to balance ideology and reality throughout the crisis. Then John talks to a couple of automotive reporters, David Welch from BusinessWeek & Jeff Bennett of Dow Jones Newswire, who watched as Detroit nearly crumbled these last couple of months. We'll hear how the companies dealt with the ever-changing situation and explore their plans going forward. And speaking of plans, as part of the loan language the Big Three will have to restructure. What exactly does that mean? Joining John is an expert in the field, Bill Diehl who is the President & CEO of BBK, a company that specializes in doing just that.Who would've predicted a few weeks ago that these late '70s Mick Jagger lyrics would seem appropriate? With the long-awaited news from the White House last week, this line might've seemed natural coming from the President as it did when it was originally sung back in 1980 by the Rolling Stones.
