Caleb is what you would call a legend in the YouTube content space. He has been producing videos about camera gear, filming techniques and production tips for 10 years! You may know him by DSLR Video Shooter on YouTube and have likely seen his videos while learning content production skills. In this episode we talk about his longevity on YouTube, who he sees as his peers in the creative space and what he looks to work on next.
The guys open the show with some bullshit that no one actually cares about. Dustin says “breathtaking” at one point and they move on to more pressing topics. After the initial opening remarks, they chat about their picture styles… the videography styles they are into… their favorite lenses, etc. Michael talks about buying new gear (storage, computers, cameras) and making the transition to entry level cinema cameras after filming on DSLR’s for almost a decade. Michael receives an email during the podcast regarding how to host a video that will be emailed to 10,000+ people in a fan-club. Michael then spends a couple minutes bashing Vimeo and their “chapters” feature. The guys talk about ProRes proxy and whether the BMPCC4K is worth fussing with at weddings. After that Dustin asks Michael what gear he’s going to buy next. They pour a couple drinks and talk about interns and the terrible experiences they’ve had with them, including a lawsuit that Dustin had filed against him. They hit on the concept of “reels” and why they are worthless, and eventually wrap up with some more personal shit and how lots of people expect creative video work to be free.THANK YOU FOR LISTENING! Shooting DSLR video has often had trouble with auto-focusing on moving subjects. But Canon's EOS 70D is a game-changing camera with "dual-pixel CMOS AF" for continuous, smooth, auto focus.
It is always an exciting day when Nikon officially announces their latest high end DSLR. That is why we take the first part of this weeks show to discuss the Nikon D4s, my next camera. Yes I will be selling my D4 and purchasing the D4s as soon as it comes in. I got over all the important specs of this camera and explain why I will be upgrading it. After that lengthy discussion, Stephen and I jump into all of this weeks Photo News of which there is a lot. We revisit the Color Run Debacle as there was finally a resolution to the situation. Also for some odd reason Max’s father made a video just for Stephen and I thanking us for our support though I am pretty sure we didn’t exactly back his son. This weeks gear of the week was something that was left at my place after the filming of the next video guide was finished. Speaking of the NEW GUIDE, if you would like to stay up to date on the FroKnowsPhoto Guide to DSLR Video you can sign up t FroKnowsPhoto.com/dslr-video-guide . I will be rolling out behind the scenes footage and photos as I gear up to release it in the next few months. A few people on this list will be selected to be the first to check out the new guide as I need people to review it. I want to thank AllensCamera.com, RODE Microphones, Atomos and Squarespace for their support. I also want to thank everyone on the Wheel of Fro.
Over the past few days there has been a developing story involving a young photographer and the Color Run. The photographer Max claims that the color run used one of his images in an advertisement without compensating him. He asked for $100,000 and the color run decided to sue him. Stephen and I don't jump to conclusions and try to look at all the facts that we have. At the time of this recording the outcome was still up in the air. By the time this goes live word has come down that the Color Run and Max have come to an agreement. To read the full story please go to FroKnowsPhoto.com/rawtalk-73. Before we went off on a long discussion about the Color Run we had a tremendous amount of Photo News from Stephen that really was interesting. We also discussed the first three days of the filming of the new FroKnowsPhoto Guide to DSLR Video. I decided it would be a good idea to have 30 flying solo questions this week that ended up taking us close to the two hour mark once again, sorry Stephen. Please be sure to subscribe to the Podcast on iTunes, Sticher or anywhere else you download podcasts from. You will be the first to have access to the new episodes as soon as they go live. I want to thank this weeks sponsor ATOMOS for all of their support. Check out the Atomos Ninja 2 and see if it is the right fit for your video needs. We use the Ninja 2 each week on RAWtalk to give us almost unlimited video recording from a DSLR.

Episode 18 of the Digital Convergence Podcast by 16x9 Cinema with host Carl Olson - a visual artist, photographer, and filmmaker based in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Featuring: Philip Bloom, Director of Photography, Cinematographer, Director, Editor, DSLR Video Pioneer No other name is more synonymous with DSLR video than Philip Bloom - a London, UK-based director of photography, cinematographer, director and editor with over 20 years of experience. He embraced and popularized the use of 35mm adapters to achieve a filmic look with video. On the heels of that innovation, came the new video capable DSLR. Philip received his first Canon 5D Mark II in May of 2009. After spending several weeks learning how to use the 5D Mark II, he began shooting almost exclusively DSLR video for both commercial and personal projects. He chronicled in great detail his experiences with DSLR video on his website and blog www.philipbloom.net. On June 1, 2010, after just a little under 3 years of existence, his website surpassed 10 million views - a testament to the value of the information Philip shares so willingly to other aspiring DSLR cinematographers. In this interview, Philip and I go on a Mr. Toad's Wild Ride of a conversation covering a broad range of topics that you will find entertaining, informative, and inspiring. Philip's tireless passion for the art of cinematography and photography comes shining through. We talk travel, business, filmaking, toy camera photography, lighting and camera support systems, timelapse, DSLR meet-ups and workshops, and his plans for the future. This is Philip Bloom like you have never heard him before.
In this episode special guest Worldwide Evangelist Jason Levine is on hand to walk us through Editing DSLR video footage in the New Premiere Pro CS5.
