Food photographers are called visual storytellers for a reason. We are known to create photos that tell a story, and transport a viewer into the frame. The best part is that we can tell if our photos have a strong storytelling element in them or not because it shows. It shows in the results that they bring. They either attract more clients, bring more traffic to our blog, captivate a viewer, garner beautiful comments on Instagram or win awards.Photos with powerful storytelling make an impact and bring results. But creating an impactful visual story every time isn't always easy. We can run into an idea shortage or a creative block. Sometimes, we get so caught up in the technology side of photography that we miss the storytelling part. And other times, we underestimate the power of a strong story and don't give it enough time and attention. Oh, and sometimes, we do create stories, but they don't bring results, indicating a weak storyline. As simple, and fun as it sounds, storytelling can be our superpower but only when we know how to create it and it brings us some sort of results. In this week's podcast, I'm sharing my guest appearance on the popular Eat Blog Talk podcast, where we dove deep into how to build a compelling visual story in food photography. Whether you're shooting recipes for brands or looking to improve your food photos, this episode is packed with practical tips, fresh perspectives, and ways to avoid common storytelling mistakes. I share how to craft compelling visual stories, even with the trickiest food subjects, why your photos might lack impact, how to create a "hook" in your images, break free from creative blocks, and easy ways to tap into viewers' emotions and imagination and use it to attract clients. Max talks with Patrick Carter of NflightCam about his journey from running an aerobatic flight school to creating specialized camera systems for aviation. His interest in video recording began nearly 20 years ago when he used a basic camera setup to help a student improve his loops. This experience highlighted the value of video for flight instruction, as it allowed students to debrief and learn more effectively by reviewing their performance on the ground, free from the stress of flying. Carter emphasizes that while video is a powerful tool for instruction and safety, it should never become a distraction during flight. He stresses the importance of easy-to-use, non-intrusive camera systems that allow pilots to "set and forget" during flight, ensuring that the primary focus remains on safe flying. He also discusses the legality of mounting cameras on aircraft, explaining that it can be done as a minor alteration with proper consideration of safety factors. Overall, Carter advocates for using video to enhance flight training while maintaining strict attention to safety and minimizing distractions. In episode 581, Leslie Osborne teaches us how to create high-quality recipe videos using a phone, including what settings to use while recording and how to use artificial lighting correctly. Leslie started her food blog Bessie Bakes in 2015 after going to artisan bread and pastry school in Chicago, IL in 2012. She wanted to have a food-based business but after having her son, she realized that she needed to work from home but still share her recipes and passion for baking. After really struggling with food photography because she couldn't find affordable yet high-quality backdrops, Leslie started learning how to make her own. In 2019 she launched Bessie Bakes Backdrops and began selling her own line of lightweight, cleanable photography backdrops on her own website and Amazon. Along the way, Leslie has personally done all the photography and videography for her products and social media accounts and shares lots of tutorials and behind-the-scenes content on IG and Youtube! In this episode, you'll learn about video filming apps for your phone, using diffusers and bounce cards, making food look delicious and many other tips. Key points discussed: - Film in 4K 60fps: Filming recipe videos in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second can improve the quality and clarity of the footage. - Use a video filming app: Using a dedicated video filming app, rather than the default camera, allows for better control over camera settings like white balance and exposure. - Get close-up shots: Zooming in and positioning the camera close to the food can help make the recipe the star of the video. - Use food styling techniques: Make your food look extra delicious and textured by adding extra sauce, oil, seasoning, dressing etc. - Pay attention to lighting: Proper lighting, whether natural or artificial, is crucial for achieving vibrant colors and textures in recipe videos. - Use diffusers and bounce cards: Using diffusers and bounce cards can help soften and balance the lighting for a more natural look. - Tripods make filming easier: Different types of tripods, from tabletop to C-stands, offer varying levels of stability and flexibility for phone-based recipe videos. - Embrace failure and practice: Mastering videography skills takes time and a willingness to experiment and learn from mistakes. If you've been working hard and not finding the success you desire, you might be missing the same piece of the puzzle as I was. We love learning about creativity and photography. We tend to invest our time and money in them thinking that getting better at those skills will pave the path for our success. And when someone tells us that we actually can attract success without working so hard, by just making small changes in our habits and behaviors, we tend to overlook that advice until we hit a roadblock. At that point when we hit rock bottom, it strikes that the only way to spring back is to think differently, focus our energy differently, and shift our mindset. The biggest piece of the puzzle in finding success was our mindset. What we think, what we say to ourselves, what we believe about ourselves and what we think about money has a huge role to play in how success reaches us.In this week's podcast episode, Megan Porta, an OG food blogger and the founder of the Eat Blog Talk podcast talks about habits and thoughts that are essential to attract success as a Creative. She helps entrepreneurs who want to break through their limiting beliefs and achieve breakthrough results in their creative careers. Like it or not, short form video needs to be a part of your overall plan. So Jennifer Denney and I chatted about some of the things you can do to make better looking, short form content, with minimal effort. 1) Remember it is disposable content, so it doesn't need to be perfect. 2) Record longer content and break it up into smaller bites (under a minute in length). That is much easier than trying to record one short tip every day. 3) Use AI to create shorts with captions. 4) Keep the main image in the frame. Different platforms will crop; the video in different ways. 5) Mix up the style so the content looks fresh in the feed, but still looks like your brand 6) Don't be afraid to reshare videos that your audience may not have seen. The future is looking towards food in motion. I mean, look at social media. We're seeing a surge in food videos. Look at client briefs. They want their products to be captured in action.Look at our potential of being able to convey a visual story of food way more powerfully through videos. There is no denying that photos will always hold their importance but the future will have a huge demand for videos. Now, I love creating photos but videos make me sweat. The amount of time, different set of technical skills, additional equipment, and then new editing applications, just totally overwhelms me. If you're like me, you probably feel the same way that videos are too much work or perhaps, videos don't interest you at all.But the one thing I've discovered over the years of being a creative business owner is that our growth & success highly depend on our ability to adapt and pivot towards where the market is moving while staying true to our values and vision as a creative. If you want to ease into video creation, you want to tune into this week's podcast episode with the Queen of Videography, Eva Kosmas Flores.Eva Kosmas Flores is a photographer, author, and educator based in Portland, Oregon. Food photos are my first love but I've also seen how powerful food videos have become, at least in the past few years. Short videos can capture the audience on your food blog & increase traffic.A photo and video package offered as a service to brands can add scope and bring more revenue. And if you're creating for passion, expressing food through movement can be a highly enriching & moving experience. If you've been thinking about growing your skills, expanding the range of services to brands, somersaulting your social media presence, or just exploring your creativity, this episode with Eva will ease you into the world of creating captivating food videos.Submit a voice question HERE and be featured on the podcast.Read more at https://myfoodlens.com Follow Dyutima on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/dyutima_myfoodlens/ Show notes available at https://myfoodlens.com/89-how-to-create-captivating-food-videos-and-monetize-your-content-with-eva-kosmas-flores-part-1/Download free resourcesThe 5 steps to visual storytelling https://myfoodlens.ck.page/b0ea86cef6The 10-step photoshoot https://myfoodlens.com/the-10-step-photoshoot-guide/
This week's episode features sculptor/ceramicist Curt Hammerly. Curt sold and shipped over 5,000 pieces of work this past year at about $100 per item. You do the math, but this dude has the credibility to be giving us all advice on growing a social media following and making sales. With over 350,000 followers on Instagram, it's best to listen when he gives tips on audience growth. Lucky for you, he gives plenty of no-bullshit advice in our hour long convo. He also drops the F bomb several times, which I appreciate because things like that help the conversation to not be so stiff. It's basically putting an emphasis on his point but if you have little ears nearby maybe just use headphones. Curt sheds some light on the idea that not everyone who has the artistic eye should be a full-time artist. I love the honesty and his reasoning behind this which you'll hear shortly. He's right. With making art for a living come so many other things like marketing or social media or whatever you need to do to sell the art you create. If those things are continually giving you a headache, maybe taking on a “real” job is best. Listen to this week's episode to hear if those points apply to you. I think you'll like Curt's very real advice on what it takes to create for a living and grow your creative business to new heights!

In episode 465, Megan chats to Liz Capozzoli about how to easily incorporate filming recipes into our business strategy. Liz is the creator behind OwlbBaking ("I'll be baking") which is a recipe blog focused on classic homemade desserts and sweet treats. Liz has been blogging as a business since 2019 and she also did recipe development, photography and video for Mashed.com, Tastingtable.com, and has created videos for other food bloggers. Liz runs a cookie decorating online course and also has an Etsy store with baking/food related merch! In this episode, you'll learn how to overcome the overwhelm of creating video content for your blog, including what equipment you need, why you should write storyboards and other tips. - Video is a must for your blog and social media content. - You don't have to show yourself on camera - there are ways around it. - Research different kinds of video styles and formats. - DIY expensive equipment like c-stand/overhead camera mounts and lighting. - Plan and prepare your scenes by writing storyboards. - Envision how you want your video to look and create a checklist for yourself so you can keep track. - Don't rush through the process as it creates unnecessary stress. - Don't worry about making mistakes while the camera is recording. - Your video doesn't need to have fancy shots or transitions to be successful. - Keep people engaged by keeping things moving quickly. -Use one video for different platforms to save you time - for example film in 16:9 format with empty space so that you can crop it to vertical format for Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts. Confession: I used to despise creating videos. Yup, it's true, just like so many people, I dreaded watching or hearing myself. Through the years I've fought through limiting beliefs that would at times cripple me BUT I continued to record anyway and I'm so happy that I did.So take it from me when I say, I get it. I understand first-hand the things that are holding you back from showing up on camera. That's why in this episode, I'm going to cover some of the biggest questions regarding video content. These are questions I used to ask myself and the ones that are most commonly asked during one of my training sessions:What is an ideal length? How often should you post? What time should you post?Should you follow trends?Should you write a short caption or long caption?Does batching content work?If a video performs poorly, should you delete it?Get ready for some ah-ha moments friend. My hope is by the end of this episode you feel more confident about showing up on video. Can't wait to see what you create!
"My puppy's feet can't touch the ground until he's fully vaccinated." Is this the best advice for a puppy? The Primary and most important time for puppy socialization is the first three months of life. During this time puppies should be exposed to as many new people, animals, stimuli and environments as can be achieved safely and without causing overstimulation manifested as excessive fear, withdrawal or avoidance behavior. For this reason, the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior believes that it should be the standard of care for puppies to receive such socialization before they are fully vaccinated. Learn more about when and how to socialize your puppy in this episode of The Naughty Dog Podcast.
