On offer is a $200 discount code for listeners, invigorating discussions on the mastery of mic technique, a review of the sound quality of an Austrian Audio microphone, and the fantastic audio benefits of using a cardioid and hypercardioid pickup. Our panel pointed out the similar sound quality Austrian audio provides across varying price points, the possibilities of using the equipment in a stereo pair setting, and the pros of using a heavy-weighted stand. The episode concluded with an appreciation for the Pro Audio mic's simplicity, without any DSP, and its excellent headphone amplifier. This might just be an addition to your audio equipment wish list! #ProAudioInsights #MicTechniques #AustrianAudioReview Timestamps (00:00:00) Introduction to Tributh & Austrian Audio (00:01:01) Sample of Austrian Microphone (00:02:30) Cardioid Vs. Hi. Hello, everyone, to the Pro Audio Suite.,Speaker A: These guys are professional, they're motivated.,Speaker B: Thanks to Tributh, the best vocal booth for home or on the road. Voice recording and Austrian audio making passion heard. Introducing Robert Marshall from source elements and someone audio post Chicago. Darren robert Robertson from Voodoo Radio Imaging. Sydney to the Vo stars. George the tech Wittam from La.,: And me.,Speaker B: Andrew Peters, voiceover talent and home, studio Guy.,Speaker C: Learn up, learner. Here we go.,: And don't forget the code trip a P 200. That will get you $200 off your purchase of the fabulous Triboof and Austrian Audio Making Passion Heard. And George.,Speaker A: GeorgeThe, tech TPAs for your discount codes and on over. If you need help.,: We all need help. I desperately need it, I'm told.,: Now, talking of Austrian audio, though, we did an unboxing on camera. That was last week. But anyway, this week we're giving you a sample of what it sounds like. And I keep popping. That's really naughty. This is the my creator. This is what the microphone sounds like. Any thoughts, chaps?,Speaker A: So this is just absolute, because right now mine's a bit hyped. I'm going through my 8118 and I'm definitely hyping it up quite a bit more than probably is necessary. So I'm going to flatten mine because I want to have a really good comparison. Okay. This is the eight one eight with no processing. Totally flat.,: Okay.,Speaker A: And let me hear you again.,: I'm on an unprocessed OC 16 then for a comparison, too.,: There you go.,Speaker A: Got it?,: Oh, yeah. And I've got a feeling I know it's like it's a bit of a weird test because different voices, but my feeling is listening in the headphones to both of you two. This one is closer to the OC 16 than the eight one eight.,: That was my first thought, the first time I heard you on it. Was it's very close to the 16?,: Yeah.,Speaker A: I'm looking to see what pattern I'm into because you guys would be on cardioid. I may not be. So I'm going to check mine.,: When you guys keep talking this one, because I'm pretty sure see, I keep popping.,: There's no professional on the other end of the microphone. That's the problem.,: Yeah, that's right.,: There's also no pop shield.,: If you've got shit mic technique, get a pop guard.,Speaker A: All right, well, now I'm on cardioid, which sounds a bit more natural. I was on a hyper before.,: It does, but it's not as hyped. It's not quite as 4160 sound.,Speaker A: Well, here's the thing. Like on the A one eight, when you're in cardioid, it's a true single capsule cardioid pickup. So you're actually only using the front capsule. So this would be more similar to you guys, because now I'm actually using a single capsule. When I go to hyper, the rear capsule comes into play and that's being mixed in out of phase to create that hypercardioid. So it definitely changes the way you sound on the mic.,: Did you flick it across it in.,: While I was talking, didn't you?,: Yes, it's the opposite to what you were telling. What I was hearing was the opposite to what you said, Robbo, because I think in hypercardioid there's more top end.,Speaker A: In static, it might be a more scooped sound, like more bass and more treble.,: Yeah, maybe that's.,: Yeah, could be.,: Maybe that's.,Speaker A: And this is more mid forward. Yeah, this sounds more mid forward to me.,: Yeah.,: But to me it's not as sort of hyped as this 16 or the creator that AP is on.,Speaker A: And we're hearing your mic, Robo, flat or are you still going through a change?,: No. I'm sending to you guys on source. Connect unprocessed. So I do have some processing in Pro Tools, but you guys aren't hearing that?,Speaker A: Yeah, for sure. It definitely sounds more hype.,: Let me turn it off. Hang on, maybe you are. Let me turn it off.,Speaker A: Hang on.,: Does that make a difference? Hello.,: Oh, yeah.,Speaker A: You sounded a bit like I was pretty hyped sounding earlier. When I turn this on, you get that extra sizzly top end. Yeah, I'll turn that off. And now I'm flat.,: Okay, so now we're all flat. Some kind of a noise gate going on there because all of a sudden I can hear.,: I did have a gate on.,Speaker A: Oh, yeah, me, too.,: Yes, I should have a gate on.,Speaker A: This will be an interesting post mix. You have to decide, Robbo, now, whether you process it in post or leave it. Totally.,: Well, that's the thing. I think I might just have to leave it.,Speaker A: Perhaps disclaimer this episode is raw.,: Is raw. Absolutely.,Speaker A: Just some limiting for the master.,: We're going bareback, but don't Google that.,: Isn't it interesting, though, that and we talked about this in the preview when AP was unboxing. It that Austrian audio have taken the time to make sure that all their products have a pretty similar sort of sound, regardless of price point, even, really, isn't it?,: Yeah.,Speaker A: The voicing of the capsules.,: Yeah.,: I mean, when you can say that an eight one eight, which is what, $1,500 or something, would that be right?,: I don't know. US?,Speaker A: About 1200.,: Yeah. So one $200 US. And you can say that it's reasonably close to the My creator, which is whatever we said that was 100 and something. Yeah, it's crazy, isn't it?,: I'd be curious how this would sound. As I mentioned, when we're doing the unboxing in not a perfect environment. I mean, I've got to say that I'm sitting right next to a laptop computer screens. There's nothing in here that's diffusing any sound whatsoever except my buff head. But apart from that, there's nothing else. So it's not ideal, but I'm kind of thinking of more of a tight sort of environment where you're trying to obviously control some kind of ambient noise in a room that's pretty lively if you're traveling. How this would take to that, that's what I'd be interested in. And the other thing is how it takes to EQ as well. Could be an interesting one.,: So the other thing, though, is that, I mean, this is effectively also a stereo pair, right?,: Yeah.,: Because it comes with the stereo pair.,: Yeah.,: So it'd be interesting to hear it with that open.,: Well, imagine if you were doing here's an example. If you were a voice that did animation.,: Yeah.,: You could space these two mics out by maybe 18 inches or something, and then you've got one capturing the loud source and one if you could actually split them because they can be stereo. So I guess you do, you just monitor left for the one and right track for the other one. And then if you did start overloading the mic that's closest to you, you've got the backup behind you.,: Yeah.,Speaker A: There's a lot of clever ways to use it when there's two separate mic capsules versus a mic that has a stereo mode. Like the ever popular The Yeti from Blue has that multi pattern switch where you can go from omni to cardioid to stereo to figure eight.,: Right.,Speaker A: Well, the mic like this, you have way more flexibility. You can make an XY pair, you can make a Blum line, I think, whatever it's called. You can adjust how you want to use those two mics. Like, you could literally put up a stereo XY pair in front of a string quartet or something and record that.,: But you could even fake it with if you had the two like, instead of doing XY, you just reverse one, stick it basically so the capsule is almost touching each other right. And get some kind of weird omni going. I don't know how that would work.,Speaker A: Yeah, that should work. It's two hemispherical patterns connected in the center. You might have some phasing issues at the center, but yeah, it's more flexible to have two separate microphones to manipulate and do. You can just do so much more.,: Yeah.,: I'm just curious how this microphone actually does sound to the people listening. I mean, if you're listening to it and you like it, just leave a comment down below the notes and stuff. But what I'm hearing is very pleasing, actually. And I'm quite surprised because I did think being a USB mic, that there was going to be inherent issues. The price point, I thought, was going to be an issue for it as well. But I can't really hear anything now.,Speaker A: Roblo, now, I'm not trying to make more work for you, but I'm going to propose something, is that we leave part of the show unprocessed and then you process the remainder of the show the way you normally would. So we can hear what it sounds like raw, and we can hear what we all sound like through your production.,: Through the magic of podcasting. Let's move to the processed show now.,Speaker A: Exactly.,: The point I was going to make was that as a podcaster, if you were a podcaster and you were on, I don't know, let's just pick out a yeti, or you had a chaonica eyeball or something that you were sort of using and you wanted to up your game audio wise.,: I mean, step one, tick hello for.,: 100 and whatever bucks we were just talking about, you've got a new mic.,: That'S automatically going to do that.,: Yeah.,: And it's got an interface built in, so you're set that's it exactly.,Speaker A: I like that. Oftentimes we'll kind of shy away from a USB mic for anybody that's producing content, because it's just a mic. So if you want to add a second person or you want to interview somebody else on site, in physical person, it's not as easy to integrate multiple USB mics, but here you just have that second mic and you've got a two mic system and away you go. It's a clever way, it's sort of an analog, old school way of doing it, but the simplicity of it, I think, is the key here.,: Well, the other thing, too, thinking about.,: That without thinking too deeply, but hearing.,: You say that, and it occurs to me that even if you had more than two people, with some clever placement of those two mics, you could almost.,: Mic up maybe three or four people.,Speaker A: Well, yeah, you could have two and two.,: Yeah, that's right, exactly.,: If you had three, you could have the host on his own and then with some clever mic placement, you could place the other one so that you.,: Were picking up two.,: Yeah.,Speaker A: It all comes down to the room. The room has to be good.,: Yeah, absolutely.,: If you were in a concert hall or something, you probably wouldn't want to yeah.,: But you can also get lav mics. I think they're doing a lav mic as well. That goes with know, that kind of podcasting and all that kind of it's. It's really clever. Here's a thing, I always watch Bandru do this.,Speaker A: Podcastage. Is it podcast age or podcastage?,: Podcastage. It sounds like sort of being tied up and pod hostage, kind of, yeah. I'm being held hostage, so I'm going to tap on the desk. He always does that. So tapping on the desk and this is not ideal, as I said.,Speaker A: No, I mean, I can hear that you're tapping on the desk, but there's absolutely no thumping or rumbling or anything.,: No, it's not actually in the mic stand.,: Oh, now you can hear it now on the stand.,Speaker A: I'm getting it.,: Yeah.,Speaker A: And what stand are you using? Are you using that?,: The gravity?,: Yeah.,Speaker A: So that thing actually is helping a lot to isolate the mic from your desk.,: Yeah.,Speaker A: See, what helps a lot is mass, right. Weight.,: Yes.,Speaker A: So if you have that mic on a very lightweight stand, like a little folding tripod, it probably wouldn't do as well. But putting on a very heavy weighted stand on rubber like that, that's a pretty good package.,: Yeah, yeah, I think it works.,: A I will. I'll stick the link to that mic.,: Stand you're talking about in the show notes.,: The gravity. Yeah, it's a German design. I don't know where it's made. Probably China, but it's certainly designed and engineered.,: It's made out of heavy steel.,Speaker A: Chances are it's coming out of China.,: Yeah.,: Where's the steel from? Oh, I'd say probably a hole in the ground in Australia. But anyway, that's another story.,Speaker A: Another story.,: Yeah. But the conclusion for me of this mic is just bloody good. It sounds fantastic.,: I have no issues with it.,: I like it.,: Absolutely.,: Yeah.,Speaker A: No issues at all. It sounds like you it sounds like you unmested with.,: Yeah.,Speaker A: Because we've all heard the USB mics. We've tried a lot of things, and some of the other companies are trying to be really clever with lots of onboard processing DSP, and sometimes those settings are on by default. You don't even know it. So now you're already mucking up the audio without even realizing it. And these guys are going on a more purest way, just like we're not going to muck with it. There's no DSP. It's just this is the way our mic sounds. This is the way it sounds. And that is a very familiar sound, which is a very good thing. That's what we want to hear.,: Yeah, great.,: And also, if anyone's interested, the headphone amplifier is extremely good, so that's a plus.,: Yeah, very nice.,Speaker A: So we figured out the knob is a multifunction knob that controls your headphone level and the monitor blend or mix or balance, as they call it.,: Okay.,: So the mix between you and me. Okay, very good.,: Well, there you go.,: Austrian audience, well done.,: Something else to add to the shopping list.,Speaker A: Christmas needing to just add it to their shipping list and send one to.,: The rest of us.,: Well, that was fun.,Speaker C: Is it over?,Speaker B: The Pro Audio suite with thanks to Triboof and Austrian audio recorded using Source Connect edited by Andrew Peters and mixed by Voodoo Radio Imaging with tech support from George the Tech Wittam don't forget to subscribe to the show and join in the conversation on our Facebook group. Bandrew is one of my early and most important connections on my content creation journey. When looking for a microphone to record my first podcast in mid 2017 the Podcastage YouTube Channel was the resource that helped me overcome the overwhelm and make an informed decision. I chose the Samson Q2U, and shared my first episode with Bandrew when it was published. Bandrew recommended I look into Better Podcasting and I turned up to one of their live recordings of their episodes and connected with Stargate Pioneer, Stephen Jondrew and Emily Prokop. I stuck around the Podcastage community and joined the Discord server that Bandrew launched in September of 2017. The Podcastage community has brought so many connections with others that I am entirely grateful for, and the discord server is my most favourite place on the internet. Previous guest Mark Diaz is one of those amazing connections. In December of 2017, Bandrew and I co-hosted a livestream for the Better Podcasting community because SP & SJ weren't able to host an episode. That was a lot of fun! Then in March of 2018 Bandrew joined me for the finale of the first Sunshine Summit Livestream event. And he came back to be a part of the second event where we had an encore playing Portal 2 on Twitch. We've co-hosted a segment for International Podcast Day, and the 4th Livestream For the Cure. Bandrew invited me to have Sunshine & PowerCuts became a part of the Geeks Rising Podcast Network of which Zach, Logan, Cody, Malcolm & Ducky are a part of and since then we've done a few Geeks Rising livestreams...Throughout the conversation we talk about Bandrew's journey, and all the milestones (celebrating milestones is one of my favourite things to do) with Podcastage, the Bandrew Says Podcast, Bandrew Plays, Watchcastage. I restate Bandrew's PSA about turning your headphones down. Protect your hearing! ... Bandrew talks about what audio is to him. And it's a good reminder to tune in to the world around you. I ask about various types of forms of inspiration to try and shine a light on Bandrew's journey of connecting with the things that he makes. We talk about consumption of content, and reading books. I loved this conversation so much. It had been a long time since we have had a chance to catch up and we had a lot of fun and laughed a lot.We also fell off the rails many times, but I've left in a particular segment where a bit of shade was thrown and we ended up in a fit of laughter. On a more serious note, I have learnt a lot from Bandrew and value his approach to helping others and sharing his journey and if you haven't discovered all that Bandrew creates I highly recommend checking them out.You can find more about Bandrew & his content here:bandrewscott.compodcastage.comgeeksrising.com@bandrewsays & @podcastage on Twitter If you have a connection with Bandrew, the Podcastage YouTube Channel, Geeks Rising, Bandrew Plays or Watchcastage we'd love to hear from you!Or if you've made a connection to Bandrew or something he mentioned after listening, please share them with us.And if you know of anyone who may benefit from listening to and learning from Bandrew please share this episode with them too. One of the first podcasting resources recommended to me was Better Podcasting, of which Stargate Pioneer (SP) co-hosts with Stephen Jondrew. I turned up to one of their live recordings of an episode and connected with SP. Since then, SP has supported my journey with podcasting as he does for many others through Better Podcasting, the Gonna Geek Network, reddit and other audio community's like Podcastage. SP is grateful for Bandrew's reviews on Podcastage which allowed SP and Stephen to focus on podcasting rather than also reviewing gear. Previous guest Josh Liston is a member of the Gonna Geek Network and talk about Better Podcasting a lot throughout our conversation. Johnny Pennington was one of Josh's highlights from the Gonna Geek community and SP shares a little more about Johnny's involvement in the community.SP loves helping others and enjoys hobby podcasting. SP shares the golden rule of hobby podcasting, which even he breaks but it is important to keep in mind.I share how Better Podcasting tends to address the things that I need to hear in a timely manner. We talk about the evolution of Better Podcasting and the now separate Live show where Stephen and SP have more direct interaction with their live audience and those that send in questions. I ask SP what the Gonna Geek Network means to him and he shares about the community of shows that make up the network. There's the Gonna Geek Discord Community where people can connect on topics they are interested in.SP talks about what podcasting means to him as a creative outlet and hobby and being able to connect with others about his interests. He has enjoyed many opportunities in 2021 to make guest appearances on other shows and one that he highlights was talking about The Rescuers.Check out SP's Podchaser profile to see his more of his guest appearances. SP has joined us for the Sunshine Summit, Sail Away with SP episode of Sunshine & PowerCuts and I joined Better Podcasting for their special International Day Podcast episode as having the opportunity to narrate a Christmas Special segment one year. Stephen and SP who have such a great dynamic on Better Podcasting, have known each other for many years at this point but have not had the opportunity to meet in person. However SP shares the story of meeting and getting to know Stephen's brother first. Podcasting and working on projects around home including cable management and rebuilding an engine project have helped SP get through the past 12 months. For more information about Better Podcasting head to: https://www.betterpodcasting.com/To learn more about the Gonna Geek Network: https://www.gonnageek.com/To connect with SP on Twitter: https://twitter.com/stargatepioneer If you have a connection with SP we'd love to hear from you!Or if you've made a connection to him or something he mentioned after listening, please share them with us.And if you know of anyone who may benefit from listening to and learning from SP please share this episode with them too. https://odddadoutpodcast.com/reboot(This is the long version of the blog post linked above and written below.)Time away to thinkBeing away from the podcast for these last few months has given me some time to think about what I want to do with things. Honestly, the way the world is right now made me seriously reconsider whether or not I should come back to the podcast at all. In the last year I have struggled a lot with, besides just getting content out, coming up with topics to cover on the show. I haven’t listened to a great number of new podcasts lately to offer many new recommendations. Much like Bandrew Scott from Podcastage, I’ve noticed that it’s become increasingly difficult to avoid political topics when covering any type of news. And when I do find news to cover, I get accused of racism because of the ethnicity of the people in some of the stories.Just as a tangent: I don’t care if you’re black, white, brown, green, orange, purple, red, yellow, blue, or polka dot. (But for some of those you really may want to seek medical attention.) If you do something seriously humorously dumb, I’m gonna make fun of you. It’s not about YOU it’s about the stupid thing that you did. Next time, don’t inject fruit smoothies into your veins and I won’t make fun of your dumb ass, ok? I’m not going to avoid making fun of someone over their race, the same as in not going to choose to make fun of someone because of their race. And if you think I’m being biased or discriminatory based on the news I cover, that’s your opinion, and you’re free to have it. (Unless you live in one of those places where having the wrong opinion can cost you your job or your life.)But it’s fun and funny to me pointing out some of the completely idiotic things that people do sometimes, and it’s something I intend to continue doing for as long as I can still find news stories of people being jackasses.Things were getting staleHonestly, I feel like, in 2020 the show got stale. I covered less news. I featured fewer podcasts. There were next to no guests all year. And, I really didn’t have much to talk about besides home schooling through Covid and gardening.I don’t really feel like most of the episodes of this year were very good. To tell you the truth, one of my favorite episodes this year was my mini bonus episode for International Podcast Day. Hearing all the podcasting stories from people was just fun. But for most of the year, I was just too tired and stressed to give the show the attention it needed to be entertaining. I neglected the news and the recommended listening segments in favor of just long ramble sessions, and I made no effort to secure my previously regular guest conversations.Starting fresh while keeping things the sameI don’t have a date yet for when the podcast will be back. But I can say that while some things will be changing, the core of the show will stay the same.I’ve been working on creating a new original theme for the show. If you’re a long time listener, you’ll have figured out that I like to tinker with different creative outlets. Recently I’ve been trying my hand at making music. I’ve been playing guitar for over 20 years, but have never really tried writing my own music, so this is both exciting and super scary.Along with the new theme, I’m intending to create new bumpers for the different segments of the show.At the same time, I’m planning on keeping the same core segments of the show. I’ll be working harder to ensure that every episode has a podcast review/recommendation and at least one news story to make fun of. Although I’m probably going to drop the jackass of the week title. And of course I will still have my personal catch up stories and adventures. But I may also start digging into some parenting articles and giving my snarky assessment of them, just to add a little more “Dad” to the show from time to time. All of those parts are pretty minor, but I’ve saved the most drastic for last. The big changesAround the start of the year, I’m going to be doing a kind of purge of the website. Purge may not be the right word exactly. I’m going to do a sort of reset of podcast features and I may be removing and archiving some of the early episodes from before the format was more established. With the restart I’m going to start my podcast features over from scratch. Over the years, many of the shows I’ve featured have drastically changed, or ended completely, or I simply don’t listen to them anymore. So I want to give a fresh review to many of these shows for those that may not have heard me talk about them before. With that, I’m also planning to start writing out my podcast feature reviews as a separate post on the website for better accessibility. I may also start doing more traditional reviews for shows that I may not be subscribed to personally but were suggested to me. I may even open up things to review submissions from others. There could even be a rating scale… Or not…Schedule changeThe biggest change may or may not be permanent. For the time being, with the relaunch of the show, I am going to be taking the show to a bi-weekly release. This will give me more time to collect news to “discuss” and to write more complete show notes and those new longer podcast reviews. It also will help reduce the stress of having to do all of this while still working and being a father and husband. (That’s gotta come first after all.)It’s all for the bestBeing away this long has been very difficult, both because I miss doing the show but also because it’s made me question whether or not I should bring it back. Ultimately I love this podcast too much to give it up completely, but I had to find a way to continue with it and still maintain my sanity. (Or whatever passes for sanity from me.) I know I need to take it more seriously if I want the show to grow at all. It’s a labor of love, but it’s still a lot of labor. If the show is going to survive, I’ve got to make it work, and right now these changes can make it work better. So, long story short, the show is coming back with changes and a new schedule that will hopefully make it better for everyone.

On episode 167 of the BSP I analyze Susan Wonicki’s blog update surrounding YouTube’s 2019 goals and what we can learn from it, YouTube apparently causing a $70 Billion market cap loss for Google, Facebook’s move to ban Alex Jones, Milo Yiannopolis and more. NOTE: I completely forgot to mention that the $70 billion "lost" by youtube is a loss in Alphabets Market Cap. HAPPY EASTER 2019 TO EVERYONE... Todays show is a bit more subdued with an update on the podcast as a project itself, a discussion about the extinction rebellion disruptions and social disobedience, a bit of a deeper dive into insincere diversity inclusion by popular figures, the Wendy Williams meltdown, EPIC TRAILER TALK with, The Rise of Skywalker & The Lion King 2019, UK porn banning news, hilariously ridiculous porn collector drama and much much more.... ALSO.... shoutouts to BANDREW SCOTT of Podcastage and the Bandrew Says Podcast for some technical feedback and for showing some love! My dad is dead and that can’t be changed. He was not a uniformly good father, that can’t be changed either. What I feel I may not have done is give a rounded view of the person he was by remembering some good things… In this episode, I remember time we spent together ‘doing fish. I reminisce on hunting endangered newts and I also recall the plaque he made for me and hid in a field for us to ‘discover’. Time spent with my dad was valuable, memorable and made me who I am. I think about my dead dad quite a bit now and it interests me. It is a personal history that is missing bits that I have the interest, means and mental fortitude to investigate where previously I haven’t.
In this episode of Lame Film School, we talk about The Front Runner, A Simple Favor, trash films, budget film gear, and how you should not use the Zoom H4n with the RODE NTG-2. Please. As you may notice we recorded this a fair while back before we got all caught up with University work once again but worry not— more is on the way. Timestamps: 0:00 - Intro 1:00 - The Front Runner 7:23 - A Simple Favor 11:08 - Rating Systems and Trash Films 21:08 - Gear Talk 27:36 - In Conclusion... First up, if you're not sure what I was on about then you should definitely check out the video I've linked by Podcastage. In fact, if you care at all about audio then his channel is worth a sub. I've linked to the point in the video where he talks about the 'Output Impedance' and then about 30s later, 'Load Impedance'. With that in mind... RODE NTG-2: 250Ω, Zoom H4n: 1 kΩ. Worth noting though at the H4n Pro is rated at 3 kΩ so that's probably a different story, although the pre-amps could still be weak. At the time of writing this the H4n Pro is ~£170, while the Tascam DR-60D is sitting at ~£145, so I'd still recommend that unless you need on board mics too (And even then, I think I'd still recommend saving for the Tascam DR-70D). A nice quick episode to start the year. This episode focuses on the etymology of the dead dad podcast. In making this podcast I am tangling with ideas, people and thoughts I don’t usually tangle with. The least I can do is learn a little about grief, bereavement, death, dads and podcasts. This episode focuses on what relevant words mean and how they fit into the podcast; a quick nugget of learning for the new year.

Jack tells me how his dad was killed on a train in a freak accident. He was 2.75 years old and doesn’t remember his dad at all. However, his family on both sides have made sure he feels his Kiwi heritage as well as his Irish Heritage. We ruminate on how much of ‘us’ is nature and how much is nurtured. Jack tells me what it is like to only have second hand memories of his father and also what a sterling job his Grandad did of becoming his dad. We chat about immaturity, about what makes a good dad and also touch on a cursed garage not far from where we live…
On episode 149 of the BSP we discuss two new microphone announcements, the Rode Podmic, and the Aston Stealth. A living surrogate father figure, Jerry Gatley chats to me about his dad, my dad and growing up with a violent and alcohol-fond father. His beautiful Wiltshire accent and talent for story telling make this podcast funny and engaging in a way that only he can make possible. I thank him for the time and effort he found to spend on me, we reminisce on good times had and of course, there is a Christmas carol thrown in for good measure.

Christmas carols inside. Helen and I chat about whether I worry about potentially developing unpleasant traits observed in my dead dad. We ruminate on why people are so willing to speak ‘on record’ on the subject of dead dads. I am asked whether I feel any aspects of fathering were missing from my upbringing and I ask when the best time for me to die would be (now that I am a dad myself). I liken myself to a womble, we talk gardens, what happens when you angle grinder your thigh and whether fatherhood has made me less impulsive and more organised. Strongly infused with Christmas cheer…

Gavin and I enjoy an open chat on what it is like to be an orphan. He lost his dad to a motorbike accident and his mum to cancer. We talk about feeling helpless, lonely, having dark thoughts, and we also touch on the funniest and strangest thing someone has said to Gavin about his mum dying. Gavin tells me how much trouble he had forging and keeping a strong, open and communicative relationship with his mum (or anyone) after his dad died. The grief he felt following the loss of his dad, coupled with his mum’s illness left him with a lot of pain to deal with (or ignore). Gavin can’t be sure if losing his parents young gave him his wanderlust, instead he simply says that it is a product of him wanting to be happy and a decent bloke.

An astronomically great guest, a challenging listener question, and endless coffee. Here we are with Episode 13 of Season 2 -- hard to believe we're this far already. Podcastage https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvOU-zTlankT-JjN3ZzvuKA Bandrew Says #145 https://directory.libsyn.com/episode/index/show/bandrewsays/id/7609697
Ask some difficult questions and you might hear some difficult truths. I ask my mum what my dad was like and how he/their relationship changed and degenerated. My dad was a bon-viveur and a very advanced swearer. He was always the life and soul of the party, was funny and was a grafter. This didn’t last. Transpires my father was also violent, homophobic, abusive, controlling, threatening and that he died in a lonely and sordid manner. I used this podcast to allay some fears I had that centred around me being like or becoming my father. Mercifully I only have his good attributes. I speak to my mum about what cancer did to her dad (my grandad) and what it is like to see a relative eaten up by it. I also ask mum what it was like to have a daughter diagnosed with cancer at 26. You Did This to Us. Again. You were super nice last time and we got complacent. Our hubris cost us, big-time. The needle swung way back to the other side on the quality indicator and we ended up watching The Emoji Movie. Our guest, Bandrew Scott of the Bandrew Says podcast and YouTube channel Podcastage, was game AF and even played devil's advocate in favor of the movie, and in the end... well, you'll have to listen to find out! We debated this movie's lack of logic, the futility of the director trying to make it this generation's Toy Story, and why on this green Earth emojis would have parents. Or butts.Next week's episode returns us to the beginning of a new Movie-Go-Round cycle! That means it's time for a new New to Two. Brett's pick this time? 'I'm Not There,' a Bob Dylan-themed biopic starring half a dozen Bob Dylans. Yeah, it's as bizarre as it sounds. Tune in then!Head on over to TiltingWindmillStudios.com for more podcast episodes, columns, and more!
