We’re all so fortunate to be able to do work that is fun and creative every day. No matter who you are, how old you are or what stage of life you’re in - following your passions and what’s meaningful to you is always an option. Sometimes this means making big moves. Today I am joined by Alisha Cohen, a photographer, stylist and creative director who had a dream of leaving her corporate job to pursue something more creative. We discuss how she came to start her own creative agency and how she’s used platforms like Instagram to grow her business. She shares how she finds inspiration, the importance of setting boundaries as a creative and how she overcomes fears when starting a new endeavor.  What’s in this episode: Alisha’s creative journey and wanting to transition out of the advertising agency Making the leap to start her business Why Alisha decided to do an Instagram meet up  How Alisha uses her Instagram as a portfolio A typical day in Alisha’s life and what she’s working on Her experience of moving to LA Setting boundaries for yourself as a creative Alisha’s creative process and how she finds inspiration from clients Her advice for breaking into what you want to do Alisha’s favorite part of her business Amy and Alisha’s trip to Bermuda Overcoming fears when starting a new endeavor Moving into corporate training and teaching brands about creating consistent content How Alisha crafts a life that she loves  Her experience of hiring her first employee and how she works with her team Collaborating with brands for her wedding day   From Alisha: I’m a photographer, stylist, creative director, and entrepreneur, but my story starts with an iPhone and a dream. I had no real photography training at all, and I got serious about Instagram as an experiment. I thought that If I could work to build a brand, agencies would hire me to do the same for the clients. The plan worked, and as a recent college grad, I was working as a social media manager and creative strategist for global brands in the advertising industry. But I ended up hating it. I wanted the chance to be more creative and to develop my own point of view. I turned to Instagram once again and it quickly became my creative outlet. I shared the colors and things around me that brought me joy and people started to notice. Brands asked me if I could take photos for their Instagram accounts, so I bought a camera, learned how to use it through an online course, and went to work. I hustled every night and weekend, creating content and building a client base. I would take conference calls on my 9-5 lunch break and meet potential clients at coffee shops near my office. When I had to start turning away clients because of my 9-5, I knew it was time to make a change. So at the age of 23, I left the advertising industry to focus on LISH creative full-time. In the 3+ years since starting my agency, a lot has changed. I went from styling photos by myself in my parent’s spare bedroom in Pittsburgh, to moving into a Los Angeles Studio and hiring a team to help. Personally, I got married, and my husband Graham finished medical school. He matched into an orthopedic surgery residency program, yay! So for the next 5 years, we’ll be living in the midwest and working to make our new house feel like a home. Brewing aficionados: take note. Back for his third time, Bill Oats from Three Rivers Underground Brewers visits the Drinking Partners podcast with an extensive collection of beer and knowledge. The early minutes feature a discussion on recipe development and have the men trying to decide if a pickle is a fruit as Bill describes TRUB’s successful dill pickle beer. What follows is a series of questions that focus on taste. From how to brew a proper Belgian to how to make yeast healthy, Bill drops all sorts of brewing lessons that homebrewers will appreciate. Ed and Day listen in as attentive students with only occasional outbursts, such as “Tell the yeast it’s beautiful.” Find Mr. Oats and other Three Rivers Underground Brewers members at this year’s Brewing Up a Cure, a homebrewer-centric festival that raises money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation on October 19 at the Energy Innovation Center in Pittsburgh. NextStream is the new kid on the block in downtown Oklahoma City’s Innovation District, but it’s already developing five new technologies for the oil and gas industry. “Those technologies will soon make their own splash,” says James Roller, NextStream’s Managing Director. “I can’t tell you what they are, but I can tell you that they will fit into the continued evolution of the oil and gas industry.” Founded by Baker Hughes, a GE company (BHGE), NextStream is a holding company for emerging technologies. “We are a catalyst,” Roller says, “and each of our companies is a start-up. When someone chooses to partner with us, they look to us to support their development, not just financially, but in setting up systems, process and the focus to grow their products into sustainable, large scale businesses that are truly successful in the market.” NextStream purchased its first set of technologies from Baker Hughes, a GE Company. “It’s very important to us to be located in BHGE’s Energy Innovation Center, which is in the Innovation District,” says Roller. “Being next door to other individuals who are developing technology is highly valuable to our scientists and our business leaders.” “There are continued opportunities to enhance skill sets and find additional resources that are beneficial to the overall environment.” NextStream’s location is a perfect fit for the Managing Director who identifies his role as that of, “the tip of the spear for our teams to help them be successful in their ventures. At this point, NextStream is ensuring that our technologists are enabled, empowered and have the strategic resources to develop their products. NextStream helps teams develop their path to market, commercialization, product segmentation, and sales and deliverables to customers.” “One of my most important responsibilities,” he says, “is to align the progression of our technical development with financial accountability.” Given its robust suite of services, it’s not surprising that Roller says, “NextStream is not your traditional venture capital group. NextStream pairs the resources of a leading global technology company with the DNA of a startup. NextStream is not required to exit any of our investments in a short time period. That doesn’t mean we won’t, though, if the right opportunities are there to return capital to our investors. Our priority is to build sustainable companies, whether that means companies are maintained within NextStream for a period of time or sold to another company at a later date.” Of the time when the NextStream’s first five acquisitions reach sustainability, Roller has this to say: “I anticipate that the Oklahoma Venture Forum will feature those companies in this newsletter. Those technologies have a story to tell.” “Technology is the leader that brought the oil and gas industry to where it is today. As we move forward, NextStream will be pursuing additional opportunities in the industrial energy space. NextStream has a world-class technology pipeline and is partnering with world-class operators and investors. We are excited to help develop the future of energy.”Interview by Kyle Golding for The Golding Group.

Radiant Hall founder Ryan Lammie was born in Pittsburgh and educated at the Pratt Institute in New York. In 2011 he was selected for the Yale / Norfolk Summer Residency in Connecticut and graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Lammie’s sculptural work often assembled from found materials (discarded furniture, old radios, and the like), is driven by two tendencies in tension with one another: a skepticism of exchange value and a love of maximalism.     As an entrepreneur, Lammie has built Radiant Hall into a nonprofit venture that supports over 50 Pittsburgh artists at four locations city-wide. He is also a creative consultant at the new Energy Innovation Center, overseeing design projects that support the EIC’s social and educational goals.   Ryan’s Challenge; Go out of your way to meet a new artist or reconnect with an artist you already know.
