Herbalists' Views on the Top-Selling Herbs (Part 12): CBD, Fennel, Oats

The Holistic Herbalism Podcast

Back to it! Today's best-seller herbal supplements are CBD, fennel, and oats. To the extent there's overlap between these, it's some capacity to touch on the nervous system – or at least, in the case of fennel, digestive symptoms which can be due to stress and anxiety.CBD is a widely-known, and yet poorly-understood, substance. It is not identical to a full-spectrum cannabis extract, neither in terms of its range of effects nor its safety profile with respect to adverse effects or addiction. Its regulatory status in the US also complicates matters: nationally legal only when certain criteria are met, and of varying legality state to state. It is neither a cure-all nor a placebo, and variance between products makes direct comparisons tricky.Fennel is one of the herbs on this list with the greatest similarity between folk and traditional medicine applications and its modern market presentation. As a carminative, sweet demulcent, and mild galactagogue, it is helpful for a variety of discomforts. Its pleasant and familiar flavor is a strong point in its favor, and it plays very nicely in formula with other herbs. At our school, we don't devote much attention to oats, whether milky oats or oat straw. We have reservations about its purported actions – particularly oat straw – and about its potential to trigger those who are gluten-sensitive. This does set us apart from basically every other herb school and herbalist out there, we admit it! Still, its popularity both with the general public and among herbal practitioners is undeniable, so it's worth understanding the nature of these discussions.CLICK HERE FOR FULL SHOW NOTES & REFERENCESNerve pain? Send a textWe chart Alan Bishop's leap from an established distillery to Old Homestead, how he rebuilt his stills, and why he's doubling down on experiential spirits. We taste and unpack Wickliffe Bell at 139.2 proof—peat-smoked oats, smoked apples, clean cuts, and a rest that polishes without erasing character.• Reinvention after French Lick and owning the build at Old Homestead• Pot still aging limits and why barrel babysitting matters• Labels that free creativity: whiskey from a bourbon mash• Making uncommon whiskey for common people as a guiding idea• The Old Homestead campus and “Alcohol Acres” destination• Wild Newton Stewart yeast capture and sense of place• Wycliffe Bell process, thumpers, peat, apples, and cask strength• Water, highballs, and choose-your-proof tasting• Upcoming Rise & Shine trio and barrel-rested sunshines• New absinthe and gin releases, plus where to find Alan's workThe best spirits don't just taste like a place—they tell you its story. We sit down with Alan Bishop for his record-setting return to talk about leaving a legacy brand, hand-building a new distillery at Old Homestead, and charting a bolder future where labels serve flavor, not the other way around. If you've ever wondered how a distiller reinvents without losing soul, this is a masterclass in making uncommon whiskey for common people.Alan opens up about the real arc of starting over: the existential first year, the stubborn stills, and the moment the “house character” finally reveals itself. He explains why pot still whiskey has a sweet spot, how to babysit barrels so wood doesn't swallow grain, and why he's transparent about using “whiskey distilled from a bourbon mash” to unlock honest flexibility—used oak, varied entry proofs, and subtle pre-distillation botanicals—while telling drinkers exactly what's in the glass. Then we dive into Wickliffe Bell, a cask-strength Black Forest Spirit at 139.2 proof that drinks shockingly gentle. Oats malted by Sugar Creek are peat-smoked with Irish turf, apples are smoked and loaded into a thumper, and the cut is clean like a white distillate before a short rest in new oak. The result is apple-oat warmth, soft phenolics that read like hickory-kissed smoke, and a choose-your-own-proof journey that blooms with a splash of water or lifts in a smoky highball. It's not bourbon. It's not scotch. It's a place in a bottle. We also map the broader canvas: Bartels & Bishop hitting distribution, limited Old Homestead bourbon kept intentionally scarce, the Rise & Shine trio (citrus, jasmine-chamomile, hickory bark) riding the thumpers, and a new absinthe that merges Old World method with New World botanicals. Along the way, Alan talks underdog grit, storytelling as craft, and building “Alcohol Acres”—a lakeside destination that pairs serious spirits with a weekend worth remembering. If you care about flavor, place, and where American whiskey goes next, press play. Long before dining halls, meal plans, and late-night delivery, students were expected to fend for themselves. Oats, ground into oatmeal, were the dependable staple that could survive travel, store well in a room, and turn into a hot meal with minimal equipment. Oatmeal was also forgiving. It could stretch to feed a hungry student, and it tolerated a wide range of add-ins...Since their homes were far from campus, universities gave students a day off in what became a later tradition on the second Monday of February allowing them to return home, gather more supplies, and come back ready for more study. Whether enjoyed as a warm, comforting bowl of porridge or incorporated into other creative dishes, oatmeal remains a symbol of nourishment and simplicity. It also serves as a quiet nod to resilience.

Charles explains the "magic" of food trend prediction, how anthropologists and psychologists look beyond viral TikToks to identify deep cultural shifts. The conversation explores the rising "snacking culture" and the "Ultra-Processed Food (UPF) movement," which is forcing both consumers and industry to demand ingredient transparency. A major highlight is the discussion on GLP-1 (weight-loss medications) and how they are reshuffling the industry toward smaller, nutrient-dense portions and "maintenance diets." From the rise of functional, non-alcoholic drinks like Kombucha to the "Single Specialism" trend in restaurants (like the perfect bowl of Ramen), this episode reveals that in 2026, food is no longer just fuel, it is a primary expression of our identity.

In this episode, we showcase student research at the 2025 ADSA Annual Meeting in Louisville, Kentucky. Abstracts can be found here: ADSA 2025 Annual MeetingAbstract 2186: Effects of feeding alternative forage silages on early lactation performance and gas production in multiparous Holstein cows. (00:15)Guests: Barbara Dittrich and Dr. Heather White, University of Wisconsin-MadisonCo-Host: Dr. Clay Zimmerman, BalchemBarbara substituted rye silage, triticale silage, rye-camelina-hairy vetch silage, and triticale-camalina-hairy vetch silage to replace 10% of the alfalfa silage in the control diet for her experimental diets. Dry matter intake and gas production were similar across diets. Average milk yield was higher in the rye mix silage group compared to the triticale mix silage group, but no treatment was different than the control.  Abstract 1602: Optimizing starch concentrations in low-forage diets. (11:22)Guests: Irie Moussiaux and Dr. Kirby Krogstad, Ohio State UniversityCo-host: Dr. Jeff Elliott, BalchemIrie investigated different levels of starch in a low-forage diet (12.5% NDF) by replacing soybean hulls with corn to yield 20%, 25%, or 30% starch. Dry matter intake and milk production were the same for all three starch concentrations; however, the low starch diet had the highest milk fat yield and energy-corrected milk yield. Abstract 2183: Effects of partial replacement of corn and oat silages with extracted stevia plant on production, behavior, and digestibility in dairy cows. (17:05)Guests: Mariana Marino and Dr. Jose Santos, University of FloridaCo-host: Dr. Clay Zimmerman, BalchemMariana fed stevia plant byproduct as a replacement for corn and oat silage in lactating cow diets. All diets had 40% grain and 60% forage. Stevia byproduct was included at 0, 25%, or 40% of diet dry matter. The byproduct is of very fine particle size and is relatively high in lignin. This resulted in higher dry matter intake, but lower milk production for the highest stevia diet. Abstract 2472: Evaluating feed sorting behavior and TMR composition in roughage intake control feeding systems. (26:38)Guests: Sophia Green and Dr. Heather White, University of Wisconsin-MadisonCo-host: Dr. Ryan Pralle, BalchemSophia evaluated feed sorting in a research intake control feeding system (RIC bins). Feed sorting primarily occurred in the last 12 hours of the feed day, and particle size was smaller at the end of the day than earlier. Compared to fresh feed at hour zero, the chemical composition of the diet did not change throughout the feed day. RIC bins did not introduce additional variance in nutrient consumption. Abstract 1603: Assessing an ex vivo assay with gastrointestinal tissue sections to investigate mucosal immune responses in dairy calves. (35:24)Guests: Paiton McDonald and Dr. Barry Bradford, Michigan State UniversityPaiton challenged explants from the ileum and mid-jejunum in the lab with rotavirus or E. coli compared to a control. Pathogen stimulation increased mRNA abundance of TNF and IL6 above control. Ileal sections secreted more cytokines than jejunal sections. Abstract 1466: The short-term effect of increasing doses of palmitic and stearic acid on plasma fatty acid concentration and mammary arteriovenous difference in Holstein cows. (40:17)Guests: Alanna Staffin and Dr. Kevin Harvatine, Penn State UniversityCo-host: Dr. Jeff Elliott, BalchemAlanna fed mid-lactation cows 0, 150, 300, 500, or 750 grams of palmitic acid, stearic acid, or no supplement control. Palmitic acid increased milk fat yield at lower doses compared to stearic acid. Alanna found that the mammary gland increases its arteriovenous (AV) difference and uptake of palmitic acid when higher concentrations are provided, but AV difference and uptake of stearic acid did not change. Abstract 2006: Does hay improve performance in pair-housed dairy calves? (50:00)Guests: Gillian Plaugher and Dr. Melissa Cantor, Penn State UniversityGillian fed pelleted hay to pair-housed dairy calves along with milk replacer and calf starter. Control calves received milk replacer and calf starter only. Hay-fed pairs grew faster than controls after day 21 and were heavier at day 70. Hay feeding did not impact calf starter DMI or feed efficiency. Abstract 1463: Dietary metabolizable protein and palmitic and oleic acids affect milk production in early lactation dairy cows. (1:02:03)Guests: Jair Parales-Giron and Dr. Adam Lock, Michigan State UniversityCo-host: Dr. Clay ZimmermanJair fed two different levels of metabolizable protein and 3 different levels of supplemental fatty acids from 1 to 22 days in milk followed by a common diet to evaluate carryover effects to day 50. Metabolizable protein and fatty acid supplementation had additive effects on milk production. Cows fed the highest dose of both metabolizable protein and fatty acids produced 8.9 kg more energy-corrected milk per day compared to the low metabolizable protein diet without fatty acid supplementation.

Could the secret to a calmer mind and a healthier gut be hiding in your morning bowl of porridge? In this episode, I sit down with Swedish herbalist and nutritionist Karoline Karttunen to discuss one of my favorite breakfasts — the humble oats (Avena sativa).Grains have gotten a bad rap in recent years — and it's true that highly processed or sugar-laden versions don't do us any favors. But as Karoline reminds us, whole-grain oats are a true nutritional powerhouse that also carry the same medicinal gifts as oat straw and milky oats — beloved herbal allies for nourishing the nervous system and restoring resilience. She shares how oats support everything from balanced blood sugar to a calmer mind (and even a healthier microbiome).Karoline is so devoted to her oats that she eats them for breakfast five days a week! She keeps her daily porridge endlessly interesting by rotating the nuts, seeds, fruits, and herbs that she adds to the mix. You can even try her Herbal and Protein-Rich Oatmeal yourself — download the beautifully illustrated recipe card here.By the end of this episode, you'll know:► How a bowl of oats can calm frazzled nerves and lift your mood naturally► What butyric acid is—and why your intestinal cells can't get enough of it► The truth about so-called “anti-nutrients” like phytic acid (and why you might not need to worry about them)► How your brain and heart thrive on the right kind of carbs—and why oats are the perfect fuel► How discoveries in archaeology and anthropology challenge the myth that eating grains is “unnatural” for humans► and plenty more oat-inspired insights to nourish body and mind….For those of you who don't know her, Karoline Karttunen is a Swedish herbalist and nutritionist who brings herbs and food together in her herbal courses, blog and in personal consultations. She has in-person courses year round on the west coast of Sweden, as well as offering online courses in herbalism. Karoline's courses always have a focus on how herbs can strengthen health and be used as a natural part of our everyday life, just as we do with vegetables.I was already a huge fan of oats, but after talking with Karoline, I couldn't wait to make them an even bigger part of my herbal routine. I'm so happy to share this conversation with you—and I hope you leave feeling inspired to make yourself a big bowl of porridge, too!----Get full show notes, transcript, and more information at: herbswithrosaleepodcast.comWould you prefer watching this episode? We circle back and discuss the two biggest games of the weekend: Vandy traveling to Alabama and Miami making their first road trip to face Florida State in Tallahassee. Both have baggage, both feature ranked teams, and both could shake up the playoff picture. From there, we explore the sneaky-important matchups that nobody's talking about enough: Iowa State's trip to Cincinnati, Kansas State trying to bounce back at Baylor, and Texas facing a desperate Florida team in The Swamp. We also hit on Notre Dame's chance to make a statement against Boise State, the letdown potential for Illinois, and why we're believers in some serious home dog action this week (looking at you, Cal and Virginia). Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions:    Alicja: Hello Dr. Cabral, I hope you're doing well. My question is about dental sealants. My kids' dentist recommended them for my 8 yo daughter and I blindly believed it was a good advice. Later he recommended them for my younger daughter, but this time I looked up what are dental sealants and it turns out it is plastic. Since my older daughter has them already (on 4 of her molars) I'm struggling to make a decision which is less of two evils: leaving the sealants because the damage has already been done, or should we have them removed, risking that some plastic will be absorbed by her body during scraping the sealants of her teeth?                                                                                                                                               Holly: Hi! I need help for my 20-year-old daughter. She has been dealing with an issue of having very terrible smelling urine, yet labs show no bladder or kidney infection. She says there's minor discomfort after emptying her bladder. Despite undergoing multiple physical exams and lab tests, everything has come back normal. Her urologist prescribed Solifenacin several months ago, but it hasn't provided any relief. She is staying hydrated, avoiding spicy foods, and has eliminated caffeine from her diet. This issue has persisted for a long time, and it's affecting her emotionally—she is becoming quite depressed over it. Her health history is that she is highly allergic to cow's milk and peanuts/tree nuts and has had eczema since she was a baby. Any advice is greatly appreciated!                             Kaitlin: I've been having tinnitus for the past 4 months. It started out in one ear, then both ears, and then transitioned to full head buzzing. It feels like my brain is attached to an electrical socket. I have also been experiencing extreme anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, and soreness(esp neck). I am a very healthy 31 year old-eat an extremely clean diet and very fit. I did notice my symptoms worsening after switching to methylated vitamins. It also intensifies with heavy lifts & exercise. I did the hair test and it showed elevation in mercury and aluminum and every mineral ratio was out of whack. I also did the OATS test and it showed some depletion of b vitamins as well as low levels of neurotransmitters. I'm not sure where to go from here. I'm scared supps are going to make it worse again.             Riela: My husband has had rather severe problems with vertigo for these past years. It seems to have been triggered by having Covid, and also a period of high stress; but he also had a blow to the head some years ago, and I'm wondering if that may be a cause as well. He's been on Pristiq for some time, and doesn't have as many problems with vertigo now, but he would like to get off it. Anxiety or stress worsens his vertigo. I'd appreciate it if you could help us find a direction, healthwise, that we could go.                                                                                                                                                           Jen: Hello! I enjoy your podcast and it has helped me so much over the years. I have a question regarding contact lenses. It has been reported that most are full of PFAS. I stopped wearing my contacts after wearing them for over 30 years when I heard this. I hate wearing glasses and am wondering if wearing contacts is truly dangerous. I found one brand that claims to be PFAS free (Eiyan), but they don't cover my prescription. In addition to this, most contacts now have UV protection which I am also concerned blocks sunlight signals from entering my eyes, and thus disrupting my circadian rhythm. Could you please share your thoughts on both issues. Tonight, we'll read about cooking alternatives to wheat, from the 1918 pamphlet “Foods That Will Win the War”. Although the United States did not have food rationing in World War I as it did in World War II, it did rely heavily on propaganda campaigns at the time to persuade people to curb their food consumption. Pamphlets like this one were part of a vast public education effort. Recipes were tailored to use corn, oats, rye, rice, and even potato flour in place of wheat, encouraging families to support soldiers overseas through their kitchen tables. These simple substitutions reflected a broader spirit of sacrifice and civic duty, where everyday meals became part of the national war effort. Herbert Hoover, who led the Food Administration before later becoming President, became known as “the Great Humanitarian” for organizing food relief. His “wheatless” and “meatless” campaigns not only shifted American eating habits, but also demonstrated how propaganda and practical instruction could merge to shape daily life during wartime. — read by 'N' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus! In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Rupy Aujla, an NHS GP and the founder of The Doctor's Kitchen, an app that includes doctor-approved recipes to cook at home. In this conversation, we dive into why cardiovascular disease remains the #1 killer worldwide, the connection between cholesterol and heart health, how fiber acts as a “magical nutrient” for the body, how to introduce it into your daily meals, and the role of lifestyle choices in preventing illness and supporting long-term brain and heart health. *** About Dr. Rupy Aujla: After suffering a significant heart condition, he dove deep into the science of nutritional medicine and was able to reverse his condition through food and lifestyle. In 2015, he launched The Doctor's Kitchen as a way to teach people how to cook their way to better health and to showcase the medicinal effects of eating well. The incredible “Doctor's Kitchen” cooking app has over 1000 delicious, science-backed recipes and 20 brand new ones added each month. There's also a handy meal planner that will personalise recipes based on your preferences. It actually suggested a delicious looking salmon poached in harissa coconut sauce, and  olive and date braised chicken, which suit my personal dietary needs and all sound great. You can download and use the app completely for free using this link. *** Subscribe to The Neuro Experience for more conversations at the intersection of brain science and performance.
