Don't drink the water! Maya finds out too late that she shouldn't drink the contaminated tap water in her 64 oz. tennis water jug. The water actually had a forced cell phone Amber Alert. Needless to say, she isn't going far from home today. Amy recaps the Nelly concert after the Twins game. You can always count on Nelly! Amy can't say a picture of the pitcher. Try it…it's tough. Maya went to Summerfest in Milwaukee on the 4th of July. She's never done something so not her. Long story short—she kicks it off with an interesting Uber ride, checks into a beautiful, haunted hotel, and dives headfirst into concerts at Milwaukee's Summerfest. Maya does festival math. The lineup is stacked…Everclear, Oates (of Hall & Oats), Chicago, Frost Children, a random cover band, and Fountains of Wayne. Oates' arrangement of the song Maneater is wild! Why are people waiting in the world's longest line for lemonade?!?!? Turns out Maya's demographic is still old men. They love to talk to a "young gal". Also, we just want to have a hot dog at a festival, for Pete's sake! After a lifetime of accommodating everyone, Amy finally puts her foot down and advocates for herself! Public Service Announcement: Just Listen to Chelsea Handler's Book, I'll Have What She's Having. It's a love letter to every woman. Finally, bring back the free summer concerts!

Mary-Jane Lawrie is joined by Josh Barton from Brose Oats. Josh tells us about the company, Brose Oats, and their oat milk products, telling us the story of how the company grew from an idea in a small kitchen, to distributing Scottish oat milk across the Lothians and beyond. He also talks about the importance of sustainability, both in terms of food production, but also in terms of societal sustainability and how important it is to create local jobs for local people. We also discussed how we can make work more accessible for those who maybe have found it challenging to gain and retain employment. Thanks for joining us for this episode of Agri Culture. This week on The Whiskey Trip, Big Chief ventures into the high-altitude heart of the Colorado Rockies to sit down with Lenny Eckstein, founder and head distiller at Deerhammer Distillery in Buena Vista. What starts as a tasting becomes a deep dive into the wild spirit of craft whiskey done the mountain way. Lenny's approach is anything but conventional. He's built Deerhammer with an unapologetically bold attitude—where fermentation is open, barrels breathe mountain air, and flavor always comes first. The whiskey journey begins with Deerhammer Straight Rye, a unique take on the category with a mash bill of: 70% Elbon Rye, 20% Oats, and 10% Caramel Malt. This isn't your standard spicy rye. The oats lend a creamy, rounded mouthfeel, while the caramel malt brings in a sweet, roasted backbone that balances beautifully with the rye's punch. It's a sipper that surprises and satisfies. Next up is Deerhammer's American Single Malt, crafted from a robust malt-forward mash bill: 85% Pale Malt, 5% Chocolate Malt, 5% C120 Malt, and 5% C45 Malt. It's rich and complex, bursting with notes of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, dried fruits, and charred oak. This is single malt whiskey with soul—and a distinctly American edge. Finally, Big Chief and Lenny dig into Deerhammer's Four Grain Bourbon, where the frontier spirit of Colorado comes alive. The mash bill is 65% Ute Mountain Corn, 15% Red Wheat, 15% Oats, and 5% Roasted Barley. Smooth and creamy from the oats, softly spiced by the wheat, and given a bold twist with roasted barley, this is a bourbon that plays by its own rules—and wins. Throughout the episode, Lenny shares the origin story of Deerhammer—from homebrewing days in Brooklyn to pioneering bold whiskey in the Rockies. It's a tale of grit, grain, and chasing flavor through every season. So pour yourself something bold, and ride along on The Whiskey Trip.

In this episode, we visit with Orin Nusbaum from Nusbaum Farms in Bellfountain, Oregon — a grower, husband, father, and content creator who's cultivating more than just crops. Orin gives us a glimpse into what life looks like on his diversified farm where he grows a variety of crops and provides fresh produce to local markets and his surrounding community. We explore how the farm has evolved over time — including planting 10 acres of oats in fall 2022, a crop that may have been a first for the operation — and how he navigates the unpredictability of farming, like this past season's surprise combine fire. Orin also shares how his family plays an active role on the farm: his wife, kids, and even the dog stay involved in everything from harvest to road trips to answering calls when things get busy.Celebrating 20 years of marriage, Orin and his wife have built a life around faith, family, and farming. Their teamwork, especially during harvest and hay season, is something that truly sets Nusbaum Farms apart. We talk social media, small-town support, and why it's so important to be present — both online and in the rows. Host Martin welcomes back solo thru-hiker and outdoor advocate Katie “Oats” Houston, whose 3,000+ miles on trail and deep ties to the hiking community make her a familiar voice to Papa Bear Hikes listeners. This episode takes a personal turn as Katie opens up about the impact of Hurricane Helene, which struck her hometown of Asheville, North Carolina in 2024.Katie shares how the storm affected her family and neighbors, and how the community rallied in its aftermath. As odd as it sounds, there was a time in American Food before oatmeal. And while that's wild on it's own, even more impossible to imagine is how much of agriculture used to be dedicated simply to growing food to feed the animals that allowed you to run the farm. Having solar panels and biodigesters to create power on the farm now is pretty wild... but it wasn't that long ago, all things considered when all the energy used on a farm was grown... on the farm! But it does help put into perspective how much energy it took to simply grow enough food for the farm - and then a little more to sell. The surplusses we have now - simply NOT possible. To learn about the origins of 40 acres and a Mule - no the earlier origins... and how 160 acres would become the standard for American farms, tune in, and marvel at the idea of the oatmeal raisin cookie - and how far away it is from it's high end hose food origin.Music Credit: Fingerlympics by Doctor TurtleShow Notes: https://thehistoryofamericanfood.blogspot.com/Email: TheHistoryofAmericanFood at gmail dot com Threads: @THoAFoodInstagram: @THoAFood& some other socials... @THoAFood

It is NCAA Tournament time! The SEC set a tournament record with 14 teams int he bracket! Is there a problem having that many teams in the tournament? The Auburn Tigers are the overall 1-seed and on their way to Lexington. Auburn Basketball, in theory, was due the most favorable draw. Many argue they did not. Who is the biggest challenge for Auburn? Was Auburn an easy choice for the overall 1-seed? The Alabama Crimson Tide is a 2-seed in the East bracket. They could eventually face the 1-seed Duke Blue Devils. Who is the biggest road block for Alabama Basketball getting to a game with Duke Basketball? The SEC Tournament Champion Florida Gators are a 1-seed in the West. Florida Basketball may be the most picked team in America, many feel nobody is playing better. The Tennessee Volunteers grabbed a 2-seed as well. Tennessee Basketball has to make it out of the bracket where The Houston Cougars are the 1-seed. Tennessee Basketball and Houston Basketball would be a defensive masterpiece. The Kentucky Wildcats are a 3-seedThe Texas A&M Aggies are a 4-seedThe Ole Miss Rebels are a 6-seedThe Missouri Tigers are a 6-seedThe Mississippi State Bulldogs are an 8-seedThe Georgia Bulldogs are a 9-seedThe Oklahoma Sooners are a 9-seedThe Arkansas Razorbacks are a 10-seedThe Vanderbilt Commodores are a 10-seedThe Texas Longhorns are in the 11-seed play-in game There is a new betting favorite to win the National Championship, where would you place your money? Key injuries could impact the Tournament including Alabama’s Grant Nelson. What is the biggest storyline in each reaction? You need to know before you fill out a bracket. Cutting down the nets without a ladder? It is possible, we have proof. What if you had to name a kid after two NCAA Tournament teams, it has already been done. Are Alabama players on the verge of a “players only” meeting before the tournament? One Alabama player is for it. Bruce Pearl is not panicked but Auburn is fighting historic odds to win a title. Oatmeal has long been considered a heart-healthy breakfast, but is it really as good for us as we think? In this episode, Jonathan and Sarah break down the great oat debate. First, they explore the different types of oats - instant, rolled, and steel-cut and how processing impacts their nutritional value. Then, they put oats to the test using continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), comparing instant to steel-cut, with and without toppings, to demonstrate how blood sugar works. Sarah also discusses wider debates around oats: Are pesticides a concern? Is oat milk as healthy as it claims? Finally, she shares the ultimate guide to choosing the healthiest oats - and for those who prefer alternatives, she's got delicious, nutrient-packed swaps to try.
Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Snaz: Hi Dr. Cabral. I am located in Southern CA in an area impacted by fires. The air has been very ashy. When the farmers market reopened after the initial crisis had passed, I had gone shopping at the market and then I was washing my veggies and started to think about how this toxic ash may end up in our food being grown in the region. What if anything can or should we do to prevent the body from absorbing these additional toxins? I can remember "smoky" vintages of wine from previous fires. This obviously ends up in our food system through direct settling on the produce or absorption in the soil. Is there anything extra we can do to protect our health from this additional source of toxins? Or just all of the usual things you talk about? Thank you for your thoughts. Gemma: Has the Dr Cabral practice ever worked with Milky Oats (avena sativa)? I see that it is often used for anxiety (amongst other things such as alcohol or drug recovery) but I would like to understand if you have seen this work in practice and if its worthwhile as its quite an expensive herb. Pub med is hinting that it got good results but theres a lot of science in that report! It behaves differently from other herbs for anxiety as other herbs such as passionflower seem to make you sleepy and switch off your brain. I dont quite understand the science behind this one but you take it every day, no sleepiness, no withdrawal symptoms if you forget….seems like a wonder herb in theory. And apparently can also lower cholesterol as an added bonus! Why isn't half the population on this? Michael: Hi Dr. Cabral, Thank you for everything you do. My question is regarding cone beam CT scans at dental offices. What is your recommendation for having this imaging done? I'm 38 and had all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled about 5 years ago. I've had a history of bad oral health that I've been working on. I've also had some intermittent jaw/facial symptoms on one side of my face for the last year or so. I recently started to see a holistic dentist and the CBCT is an option. My worry is the radiation with CT scans. Michael: Hi Dr. Cabral, I have a question regarding regular sauna use. I've read a lot about the benefits of multiple sauna sessions per week. I have used a dry sauna at a local gym regularly for a couple of years. I recently purchased a sauna blanket from Higher Dose for the convenience of not having to travel to the gym every day. I do sweat a lot using the sauna blanket especially when I use it after a workout. Is there more of a benefit from a sauna that you're inside of and breathing the warm air, or does the benefit simply come from warming the body to the point of sweating which is still provided by the sauna blanket? Thank you for taking the time to answer everyone's questions! Belinda: Hi doctor Cabral, I was wondering if you could help me with the following: every morning, I have a large, wel-formed, normal bowel movement, but in the afternoon, I feel the urge to go again, but I'm only able to pass a small amount of stool. I'm experiencing bloating and gas, and I feel like I should be able to have a more complete bowel movement. I'm eating a healthy diet with plenty of fiber, drinking enough water, and I recently completed a cleanse, but my symptoms haven't improved. Could you please provide some insight into what might be causing these issues? Really grateful for your help here. Thanks so much! Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Kay: Hi Dr. Cabral. Thank you for all you and your team do. The content, products and protocols you have put out have changed my life and so many of my clients - sincerely thank you. My questions is in regards to pregancy. Can a pregnant woman use the Healthy Gut Support? Can they double up on DNS shakes daily (easy to digest, make them feel great). What things can they do to help prevent thydroid decline, other then eating a well balanced diet and doing the Daily Foundational Protocol level 3 Andrea: Hi Dr, your podcast is life changing thank you! What's your opinion on using methylene blue? My Dr suggested it to enhance mitochondria health. Have you prescribed it and if so, side effects (besides urinating blue)? Thank you! Bridget: Hi, I am 67 years old and it is only in the last year and a half that I have really been taking my health seriously. I am just finishing up the 21 day detox but already my body (and mind) are feeling so much better. But my question is this, have I waited too long to prevent aging diseases and can I reverse the health of my body or am I too late in the game to reverse and can only hope to minimize what may be coming down the road. Right now I am on no medications other than testosterone and estrogen and am in good physical shape. Thanks! Justine: Hi Dr. Cabral, My eye color has darkened significantly since the day all of my GI, cognitive, mood, and hormone issues started. They used to be light blue and are now are a dark grey/green. My GI map showed a large bacterial overgrowth but my OATs test showed no bacterial or fungal overgrowth even though my symptoms point to a clear fungal overgrowth which include systemic fungal infections. Last year when my symptoms got better, my eyes got brighter again. I then introduced probiotics and they returned to the dark color. Therefore, I suspect it is due to dysbiosis and/or leaky gut but was wondering if you have ever seen this and what the cause is. Thank you very much. Laura: Thank you for this podcast and the insight you share! I'm at my witts end and really hope to get some answers from you. How do I get rid of roundworms? I've been dealing with intestinal roundworms for about 5 years now and just can't seem to get rid of them! I went to the doctor in 2020 and got 2 pills of ivermectin, that obviously didn't get rid of them, and since then I've tried many herbal parasite cleanses. Wormwood, black walnut hull, biocidin, tinctures etc. I don't know where to go from here! It's really discouraging and freaking me out to have these nasty creatures in my body. But what concerns me even more, is that my daughter passed a couple of worms back in 2019 too, and I'm so concerned that she's dealing with it still without us knowing. Any advice? Thanks so much!
