In Part 2 of Episode 42, I'm joined by two former Pro Bowl quarterbacks, Gus Frerotte and Chris Miller. Gus Frerotte, who hails from Ford City, just outside of Pittsburgh, kicks off the conversation by sharing his thoughts on the Steelers' quarterback situation, particularly the dynamic of having both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. Gus draws on his own experience from when he was drafted by the Commanders as a 7th round pick, the same year they selected Heath Shuler with the #3 overall pick. He offers his perspective on whether Pittsburgh's situation can succeed. We also discuss the skyrocketing salaries of quarterbacks and wide receivers, the evolution of the game since his playing days, his memorable conversation with Matthew McConaughey, and some of his favorite Pro-Am tournaments. Chris Miller, an Oregon Duck Hall of Famer, was a 1st round draft pick by the Atlanta Falcons in 1987. After retiring from the NFL, he went on to serve as the Offensive Coordinator for the Houston Roughnecks in the XFL. We begin by discussing the new UFL and its potential to develop players overlooked by NFL teams. Chris shares his thoughts on the Falcons drafting Michael Penix in the 1st round after signing Kirk Cousins to a massive free-agent contract. He also provides insights on his Oregon Ducks, who are entering the college football season ranked #3. Finally, we hear about his memorable round of golf with his father at Augusta National and his participation in the annual Mike Bellotti MDA Golf Tournament.
Gus Frerotte played just one of his 15 NFL seasons in Miami, but delivered one of the most productive years of his career in 2005, providing a veteran offensive presence for Nick Saban's Dolphins. He knew he needed a scholarship if he wanted to go to college. Gus Frerotte grew up in a blue-collar Pennsylvania home steeped in hard work and toughness. He played 3 sports in high school and despite being at a small school with barely enough boys to play football, the quarterback position gave him a full ride to college. He was recruited by many and opted in to Tulsa where he played as as redshirt freshman when TJ Rubley went down with an injury. He finished as Tulsa's 2nd ranked all-time passer behind Rubley and was drafted by the then-Washington Redskins in the 7th round of the 1994 draft. He had some good years in Washington and was a Pro Bowler after the 1996 season. Then in 1997, he celebrated scoring a touchdown by ramming his head into a wall on Sunday Night Football. He sprained his neck, fell out of favor with Washington and moved on to the Lions. After one season with Detroit, he was released and landed in Denver to back up Brian Griese. He led the Broncos into the playoffs in 2000 after Griese was hurt, but after two years in Denver, was told he could move on. Four more teams followed (including two stints with the Vikings) and Gus eventually retired in 2009. Gus credits his ability to recover from setbacks and move on to his wife Annie and his support system. In retirement, he's been a high school coach and entered the business world. Currently Gus runs NFL Alumni Ventures Podcasts, a podcasting platform for NFL Alumni giving former players an unfiltered way to tell their stories.

Jim Everett joins us and shares his insights on how Baker Mayfield was able to sign with the Rams on Monday, arrive in LA on Tuesday, and start on Thursday. He tells how the Coaches and Baker found a play scheme he was familiar with and played the game in the 2-minute offense. Miami Dolphins Tales From The Deep A fourth-round draft choice by Washington in 2001, Sage Rosenfels was traded to Miami prior to the 2002 season and spent four years with the Dolphins, sharing a quarterback room with the likes of Jay Fiedler, Ray Lucas, Brian Griese, A.J. Feeley, and Gus Frerotte during that stretch. Rosenfels' career would span 11 NFL seasons, but it was his stunning performance in leading the Fins back from a 21-point fourth quarter deficit against the Buffalo Bills in 2005 that Miami fans remember him most for. In The Tank, Sage reflects upon his Miami Dolphins tenure (7:01) and takes us back to that epic fourth quarter comeback over the Bills in '05 (12:01). In the wake of Tua Tagovailoa's six TD performance at Baltimore this year, Sage also recalls his own four TD fourth quarter (21:19), explains how impactful it was to be surrounded by the likes of Kyle Shanahan and Mike McDaniel after signing with the Houston Texans in 2006 (30:26), and provides phenomenal insight on their offensive philosophies (43:44). Sage goes on to detail the life of a back-up quarterback in the NFL (52:12), and attacks our Fish Tank Two-Minute Drill like he was back in command of a huddle (1:07:30).
