In this episode, Hydrocarbon Processing interviews Joel Lack, Senior Technology Advisor, Baker Hughes, about water wash systems in refinery overheads, exploring why some systems succeed while others fail, and how to optimize their design and operation for better reliability and corrosion control.

Today we had the pleasure of hosting Todd Abbott, Chief Executive Officer of Tamboran Resources, and Dick Stoneburner, Chairman of Tamboran's Board, for a conversation recorded on location in Daly Waters, Northern Territory, Australia, a town of roughly 55 people. Tamboran holds approximately 2.8 million net acres across the Beetaloo Basin, and Todd estimates the basin contains roughly 200 Tcf of recoverable gas, enough to support 5 to 6 Bcf per day for a century. The company is dual-listed on the Australian Securities Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange. We recorded on Tuesday morning Australia time this week as part of the company's first gas celebration at the Shenandoah 2 pad. In our conversation, Todd explains why a resource of this scale and duration is unique globally, in a region with rising demand and declining domestic supply, and in a country that has supplied LNG to Asia since 1989. He describes the Northern Territory as the most supportive regulatory regime he has worked with, including Texas, with a high bar on standards paired with real support in clearing them. We explore Tamboran's various strategic partnerships, including Liberty Energy, Helmerich & Payne, and Baker Hughes, all of which are investors in the company. We also discuss INPEX's recent farm-in to the Daly Waters joint venture. Todd covers the company's cost structure in the field and also discusses gas prices which are roughly three times U.S. levels. As we wrapped up with Todd, we touch on the growing inbound interest from multinationals to Asian gas utilities, and his view that timing, not geology, is the biggest uncertainty he cannot control. A theme throughout the discussion with Todd was his comparison of this new shale development to others he has seen in his 25-year career. Dick then takes us under the hood on the subsurface. At roughly 1.4 billion years old, the Beetaloo is the oldest petroleum system in the world, deposited when only a single life form existed, leaving 150 meters of continuous thermogenic shale from that one organism type. He describes petrophysical characteristics most comparable to the Marcellus and superior to it in many areas, and early well behavior that appears genuinely different, including one well on incline at the tail end of a 90-day test with no surface changes. He also walks us through how Tamboran found the over pressured areas, moving 60 miles south into the deepest part of the basin. We close with well spacing at Shenandoah 2, the beneficial use of gas allowance that lets Tamboran produce ahead of a formal production license, and the milestones Dick is watching, principally the first real decline curves and the testing of additional landing zones. Dick has been involved with the company since 2014 and, as a result, offers a phenomenal historical perspective. Mike Bradley opened the discussion by noting that Treasury yields moved higher across the curve this week, with the 10-year Treasury yield rising to 4.8% and the 30-year Treasury yield exceeding 5.25%. The increase in yields was driven primarily by Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh's more hawkish tone at last week's Jackson Hole Economic Symposium, which prompted investors to scale back expectations for future interest rate cuts. Turning to the broader equity market, he highlighted that the S&P 500 declined ~1% this week, pressured by higher oil prices and rising bond yields. With second-quarter earnings season largely in the rearview mirror, investor attention is increasingly shifting toward the September 16 FOMC meeting and the upcoming U.S. midterm elections. Turning to oil markets, WTI crude oil prices increased ~$6/bbl (to ~$90/bbl) this week amid renewed conflict between the U.S. and Iran. Mike noted that the biggest development in the oil market this week was the announcement of a 65-billion-barrel oil agreement between the U.S. and Venezuela. Turning to natural gas, European prices continued to move higher this week, reaching ~$25/MMBtu (up over 165% year-to-date). The primary driver remains concern over whether European storage inventories can be replenished to "minimum" required levels before the start of the winter heating season in November. The energy sector advanced ~3% this week, supported primarily by stronger crude oil prices. Mike noted that M&A and strategic deals were a major theme across the energy and electricity complex, with four significant deals/transactions announced this week: SLB's acquisition of Kelvion for ~$4.0 billion; ONEOK's acquisition of Brazos Midstream for ~$4.4 billion; Comstock Resources' $1.65 billion cash transaction with SOCAR; and Fervo Energy's 396-megawatt power purchase agreement (PPA) with Google. Mark Castiglione also joined the conversation, and with the help of Albert De La Portilla, he will be spending roughly a week in the Beetaloo basin understanding all the aspects of the play. The “rich” gas burned at thousands of U.S. compressor stations is worth far more than the fuel it provides. On Episode 56 of the F+L Webcast, Dr. Mathias Schlecht explains how ColdStream Energy recovers that value — and why the hardest part isn't the technology, but the contracts.Midstream is a very complicated business — and the complication is not mainly technical. It is contractual. Across the U.S. system that moves natural gas from the oil field to the power plant, “there are so many different contractual setups. Who gets the value of the gas that's being moved? Who gets the value of the heavy hydrocarbons?” Those agreements are often written for 10 or 20 years, “and nobody wants to touch them.” That tangle is the backdrop to the opportunity Schlecht has built a company around.The value in question is hiding in plain sight — going up in flames. Gas straight from the field is “rich,” heavy with propane, butane and hexane, “raw materials for plastics, for the propane you might use at your house.” Much of it is burned to fuel the compressor engines that move gas through the pipelines. Burn it, and that value is destroyed; worse, it drives up tightly regulated volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions and can trigger detonations that shut engines down. “That means you move less gas,” Schlecht said, “and based on that, impact even oil production.”ColdStream Energy, the Houston, Texas-based company Schlecht leads, exists to close that loop. Its MaCH4 system uses pressure swing adsorption to strip the heavy hydrocarbons out of rich gas before it reaches the engines — delivering clean, pipeline-quality fuel while routing the valuable components back into the pipeline to be monetised downstream. “It's a very energy-efficient process, which is fully reversible,” Schlecht said. “That is the beauty of our system.”Getting there took a hard pivot. ColdStream's original business was mechanical refrigeration; when that market “became very crowded,” the company bet on adsorption instead and, under Schlecht, exited the legacy line “to 99%.” “I'm a strong believer in focus,” he said — a conviction sharpened by a career that ran from leading R&D teams at Baker Hughes to a company of 13. Commercialising new hardware in oil and gas, he added, comes down to a first believer: “You always need a beachhead.” His first compression customer signed for two systems and stayed through six months of upscaling “because they believe in the technology.”The pitch ultimately rests on a number. A single system preserves roughly a million dollars a year in heavy hydrocarbons that would otherwise be burned, and pays for itself “in one to three years” — against a Joule-Thomson (JT) skid that “is doing its job, but it's not making any money, it's just costing the customer money.” Add a reliability dividend — roughly 98% uptime, remotely operated, “drop it and forget it” — and better fuel quality, measured by methane number, lifted from a poor 30-to-60 range to 70 or 80. The real hook, Schlecht says, is that customers buy to fix engine downtime; the recovered hydrocarbons are the bonus. Emissions fall out the same way: VOCs down roughly 70%, CO down 20%. “Emissions control should not necessarily drive up your cost,” he said. “It should drive additional value.”Then there is the frontier that has everyone's attention. Ask Schlecht where the growth is, and he points to the surge in power demand from AI and data centres. Rather than trucking gas to a data centre until a pipeline arrives, why not site the data centre next to a rich-gas line and clean the fuel there? “If you don't have access to a natural gas pipeline, but you have a rich gas pipeline, we can be part of the solution.” Bring the data centre to the gas, he argues, “instead of just trying to bring the gas to the microgrids.” He is already in talks with a producer building exactly that.

And mostly what's happening is we're seeing visionary leaders in the tech industry, energy, utilities, power, and other places realize the old story that what got us here won't get us there. 00:35 — So I wanted to talk a little bit today about a big new partnership between Google Cloud and a century-old industrial power company called Baker Hughes. And they're looking together to join forces to do things that neither could do individually, to juice up the AI Economy and address insatiable demand for power in AI data centers. 01:38 — So much growth here, and all this is forcing traditional industry boundaries to be reconsidered. These digital-native software companies are now worried about where electrons come from, and they've got to get upstream integrated into the power and energy industry to keep this going. 02:20 — Now you got these extremely capable companies like Baker Hughes that have never faced such an extraordinary spike in demand. This fusion or blurring of the lines between the tech industry and the energy/power industry is going to be enormously important. 03:01 — They're looking at the possibility of fusion reactors. Fusion is one of the world's most high-potential but difficult technologies, and if it works, energy problems are solved.
