SERIES: The Gift of GodOn Christmas Eve the angel told the shepherds, “I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people” (Luke 2:10). One wonders if those words struck those Jewish shepherds as odd. For centuries, God had given special attention to one nation—Israel. There were Jewish religious leaders who taught that only members of that special people would be saved. Not according to the Christmas angel! The birth of the Savior was good news for all people.Today we celebrate the Festival of the Epiphany (Jan. 6). Epiphany comes from a Greek word meaning “reveal.” When the Savior was born, he was first revealed to Israelites: the shepherds, Simeon, Anna. But today, we see the Lord miraculously guides foreigners across countless miles so the Savior could be revealed to them as well. How did the magi respond? “They were overjoyed” (Matthew 2:10). The Festival of Epiphany is sometimes known as “The Gentiles' Christmas.” We Gentiles (non-Jews) rejoice in the good news that this Jewish baby is not just a gift for the Jews. He is a gift for everyone—the Savior of the world.

This coming Sunday will be celebrated by many churches as Epiphany Sunday, commemorating the visit of the Magi to Jesus and celebrating God's appearance of his Son to the Gentiles. We will see that Jesus' incarnation is a reminder of the love and grace of God for all people.

Longing. We have a longing for community, proximity, peace, blessedness and righteousness. And our experience in this world, on account the evil in her that flows from our own hearts also, reminds us that if we do have it here, it is in small portions and temporal. Zechariah's prophecy speaks to this longing. And Jesus Christ satisfies it. This sermon was preached on the 2nd Sunday after the Epiphany at St Jude's Anglican Church in Huntersville.
It's not miracles, but signs. Signs of what? Join Mark B and Mark G as they live into the Baptism of the Lord readings and begin to contemplate the readings for Epiphany 2. (Second Sunday After Epiphany readings are: Isaiah 62:1-5; Psalm 36:5-10; 1 Corinthians 12:1-11; John 2:1-11)

Mark 1:21-28 Jesus and his disciples went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Just then there was in theirsynagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.” But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, “What is this? A new teaching— with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.
Mark 1:14-20 After John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.” As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.

• Where do we find the Christ child now? And what do we do about that discovery?
Happy new year, and happy Feast of the Epiphany! "The coming of the Magi reminds us that there might be an opportunity to share Jesus with people who seem to us unlikely to be looking for him. It is God who creates an opening in the minds and hearts of others and we shouldn't be reticent or stingy about sharing the joy of the Gospel." In this first episode of 2019, Archbishop Lucas talks about the importance of the Feast of the Epiphany (Jan. 6) and what it tells us about our mission as Christians.

The Feast of the Epiphany - Greek for "To Reveal." How do we come together with people of different walks of life when we live in a world that teaches we can no longer come together despite differences? Today's Gospel is about the belief that something is big enough for all of us--that's what Catholicism, is. It's Universal, which means there is a truth in Jesus Christ that is big enough for everyone. When we are not united, we are weak. This day and age, we don't miss unity because we've never seen it. So, how can we have that hope? 1. Don't look for what's wrong with someone; look for their goodness. 2. Recognize that the Gospel is good news, not good advice. 3. Be a seeker. You cannot give an answer to a question someone doesn't have, and you cannot have joy unless you seek it. Christianity does not start with advice, it starts with news. "All nations shall walk by your light."
