Adam Rozencwajg is a managing partner at Goehring & Rozencwajg, a New York City-based investment firm that focuses on natural resources. In this episode, he explains why the “undercapitalized and underloved” oil and gas sector is going to continue seeing big profits, why rising interest rates and higher commodity prices are slamming the renewable sector, why EROEI -- energy return on energy invested -- is key to understanding our energy and power systems, and why, in his words, “nuclear power really gives me hope.”

EROEI tulee sanoista Energy Returned On Energy Invested. Mitä EROEI tarkoittaa eri energiamuotojen kohdalla ja miten suhdelukua on tulkittava?   Pohdimme myös, mitä koko energia-alan mittakaavasta on hyvä ymmärtää.   Podia juontaa Inari, vieraana jälleen energia-analyytikko Rauli Partanen. Our Finite World
To Be Sustainable, Green Energy Must Generate Adequate Taxable Revenue

This episode is also available as a blog post: https://ourfiniteworld.com/2021/07/15/to-be-sustainable-green-energy-must-generate-adequate-taxable-revenue/ This is an article I wrote because a Biophysical Economics group that I am part of is looking at the question of whether EROEI calculations are sufficient to give good answers with respect to Green Energy. In this post, I try to explain in lay people terms that what really is needed is taxable income generated by Green Energy products. Right now, Green Energy products are heavily subsidized, making them look profitable. If an economy is truly to be sustainable for the long run, Green Energy cannot depend on subsidies, indirectly from fossil fuels. Instead, Green Energy needs to be able to generate huge amounts of "net energy" for use by the rest of the economy. It does this by producing high amounts of taxable income, which the governments can tax and distribute to other parts of the economy where it is needed. We are already having difficulty producing enough energy for the world's population. I am skeptical that Green Energy is up to the task it needs to perform, if it is expected to replace fossil fuels.

All of humanity's feats, whether a record-setting deadlift by the world's strongest man or the construction of a gleaming city by a technologically advanced economy, originate from a single hidden source: positive net energy. Having surplus energy in the form of thirteen pounds of food per day enables a very big man, Hafthor Bjornsson, to lift very big objects. Similarly, having surplus energy in the form of fossil fuel enables very big societies to build and trade very big piles of stuff. Maybe Hafthor has a rock-solid plan for keeping his dinner plate well stocked, but no society seems ready to have a mature conversation about how our sprawling cities and nations will manage as net energy declines. Calling our conversation "mature" might be a stretch, but at least we're willing to address climate change, sustainability, and the rest of the net energy conundrum head on. Alice Friedemann, author of Life after Fossil Fuels, joins the conversation.Support the show (https://www.postcarbon.org/supportcrazytown/)

Steve St Angelo: Gold & Silver Miners Running Out of Ways to Cut Costs

Jason Burack of Wall st for Main St had on gold and silver mining and oil and energy expert, Steve St. Angelo of the SRSRocco Report http://srsroccoreport.com/ on for an in depth interview. During this 50+ minute interview, Jason asks Steve about the costs to operate a modern primary gold and primary silver miner. Jason and Steve discuss how since ore grades have fallen so much over the decades how they have made it difficult for miners for have high margins. Jason asks Steve how miners have survived in the past when gold and silver were below their all in production costs in the mid 90s. Steve cites one miner, Coeur D'Alene Mining, who sold hundreds of millions more shares diluting shareholders to survive. Jason and Steve discuss whether miners can sell many more shares in this environment. Jason doesn't think that's likely considering what he hears from his contacts in Toronto and Vancouver where miners normally get financed how there's basically no debt or equity available anymore, except in small amounts at penalty/punitive rates. Jason asks Steve about primary copper miners and what will happen to the gold and silver by-product when the hedges of copper miners come off line and copper miners go bankrupt or shut down mines. Steve thinks this could cause a supply squeeze in the near future unless gold and silver prices rise. Jason and Steve talk about the fundamentals of the market how demand for physical is rising, while the paper price is controlled and how miners are struggling mightily financially just to not go bankrupt soon. To wrap up the interview, Jason and Steve discuss the oil and energy markets, peak oil and how the fracking boom is about to turn into a fracking bust because US shale oil companies are not making a profit without their hedges, they have too much debt and the energy returned on energy invested (EROEI) in shale oil is poor compared to other oil production. Steve and Jason also talk about solar power and how it's probably not a panacea to replace oil and natural gas, at least not until the battery problem is solved. Most rare earths mining is done in China to produce solar panels, making them not as environmentally friendly as people think and silver industrial demand should grow the more solar panels are used.

This week our guest is Dr Marco Raugei. Marco is a Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, Oxford Brookes University (UK), and a Senior Researcher with the UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change of ESCI - Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona (Spain). His main research interests are in theoretical improvements of existing approaches for environmental sustainability assessment, and the development of strategic energy supply scenarios, with special focus on photovoltaic (PV) technologies. He has also been actively contributing to the theoretical and methodological advancement of Emergy Synthesis, which looks at human-dominated processes and systems as parts of and ultimately supported by the larger system in which they are embedded, namely the global geo-biosphere. You can sometimes find his writings on Ugo Bardi’s blog: http://cassandralegacy.blogspot.co.uk/ We discuss his work on renewable energy, in particular his work on the current state of Photovoltaic or PV systems. We learn about the key differences between Energy Returned on Energy Invested and efficiency, bootstrapping fossil fuels to build a renewable future, re-organisation of our current economic system, and renewable energy’s storage problems. Enjoy!
