In this interview, Grzegorz Pac, Professor at the Faculty of History of the University of Warsaw, discusses his on-going research into the cult of saints and canonisation in Medieval Poland.  Through a case study of the canonisation of St Stanislaus of Krakow, Grzegorz focusses on how a saint, particularly a popular and highly venerated saint, could confer symbolic capital onto a specific church, diocese and individual bishops or archbishops.  And in turn, how this symbolic capital offers the beneficiaries greater status and power within the ecclesiastical hierarchy.  In addition, Grzegorz considers how the medieval process of canonisation, while becoming more formalised, was more difficult and less effective in the newly Christianised regions peripheral to the centre of Christianity in Rome.This podcast is part of a series of interviews covering central Europe in the medieval period for MECERN and CEU Medieval Studies.

W roku 2024 udało nam się zgromadzić naprawdę pokaźną bazę rozmów o książkach, którymi, tak nam się wydaje, jeszcze jakiś czas będziemy się z wami dzielić. I tym oto sposobem dzisiaj cofamy się do ubiegłorocznego Bruno Schulz. Festiwalu, gdzie Mariusz Urbanek rozmawiał z Grzegorzem Gaudenem o jego najnowszej ksiażce „Polska sprawa Dreyfusa. Kto próbował zabić prezydenta”. Sprawa Alfreda Dreyfusa, żydowskiego oficera armii francuskiej fałszywie oskarżonego o szpiegostwo, obnażyła francuski i światowy antysemityzm u progu XX wieku. Podobnie rzecz ma się ze sprawą Stanisława Steigera, która nie doczekała się jednak takiego rozgłosu. Polski Żyd został wskazany jako sprawca zamachu na prezydenta RP Stanisława Wojciechowskiego w 1924 roku. I mimo że do zamachu przyznali się ukraińscy nacjonaliści, prasa narodowa rozpoczęła nagonkę na Steigera, który ledwo uniknął kary śmierci. Jak wyglądała praca nad ta książką. [AUTOPROMOCJA] Życie w Rosji przed wojną i po jej wybuchu Grzegorz Ślubowski, były dziennikarz i ostatni konsul generalny RP w Petersburgu, opowiada Witoldowi Juraszowi o atmosferze w Rosji tuż przed rozpoczęciem inwazji na Ukrainę. Wspomina przyjęcie, na którym nikt nie wierzył w wybuch wojny, a jednocześnie wszyscy byli jej przeciwni. Dziś, jak zauważa, podobne spotkanie byłoby niemożliwe – większość jego uczestników opuściła już kraj. W pierwszych dniach wojny tysiące Rosjan wychodziły na ulice, by protestować przeciwko agresji na Ukrainę. Jednak z biegiem czasu demonstracje malały, aż całkowicie zanikły. Strach stał się wszechobecny, a społeczeństwo dostosowało się do nowych realiów. Gość podkreśla odwagę tych nielicznych Rosjan, którzy, sprzeciwiając się wojnie, wciąż dają świadectwo swoim poglądom – co oczywiście wiąże się z ryzykiem. Luksusowe życie z widokiem na wojnę za oknem Ślubowski podkreśla, że mimo zachodnich sankcji życie w Rosji wróciło do normy. Sklepy są pełne luksusowych towarów, ekskluzywne restauracje i kawiarnie tętnią życiem, a mieszkańcy zdają się ignorować trwającą wojnę. Zauważa jednak, że choć w Rosji narasta atmosfera strachu, to nazwanie jej państwem totalitarnym byłoby przesadą. Rosja wszechmocna, Rosja na skraju upadku Były konsul krytykuje sposób, w jaki Rosja bywa przedstawiana w polskich mediach – raz jako potężne, wszechmocne imperium, raz jako państwo na granicy rozpadu. Jego zdaniem prawda leży pośrodku: Rosja nie jest na tyle silna, by dominować, ale też nie na tyle słaba, by się rozpaść. W rozmowie pojawia się też temat ludzi, którzy w Rosji zostali. Są to urzędnicy wybierający lojalność wobec władzy, inteligenci zamykający się w emigracji wewnętrznej, katolicki Kościół unikający konfliktu z reżimem oraz prawosławna cerkiew, która reżim aktywnie wspiera. Ślubowski opisuje również, jak wyglądało życie i praca polskiego dyplomaty w Rosji – kraju, który oficjalnie uznaje Polskę za wroga.

Jeśli sięgniecie po prestiżowe czasopismo Nature, a konkretnie po wydanie numer 8042 z 12 grudnia 2024 roku, na okładce zobaczycie dwa dinozaury i tytuł artykułu o tym, jak badanie skamieniałych odchodów i wymiocin pomogło ustalić, w jaki sposób te zwierzęta zdominowały dawne ekosystemy. Jednym z autorów tego artykułu jest mój dzisiejszy gość, dr Grzegorz Niedźwiedzki z Uniwersytetu w Uppsali i Państwowego Instytutu Geologicznego. Jest jednym z najciekawszych polskich paleobiologów, a  artykuł w Nature to podsumowanie 25 lat jego pracy jego i zespołu nad zaledwie jednym tematem. Ma ich w zanadrzu o wiele więcej. W tym odcinku rozmawiamy o odkryciach paleontologicznych na terenie Polski.Dinozaury zdominowały świat przede wszystkim w okresie jurajskim, ok. 201-145 milionów lat temu. Najsłabiej poznany jest początek tego okresu, pierwsze 30 milionów lat. Tak się składa, że w Polsce (na Mazowszu, w Świętokrzyskiem, na Śląsku) mamy świetne stanowiska paleontologiczne z bardzo ciekawymi znaleziskami z tego okresu. W okolicach Radomia, Szydłowca czy mojego rodzinnego Skarżyska znaleziono nieco kości, sporo tropów dinozaurów oraz dużo koprolitów, czyli… skamieniałych odchodów.Odchody były zwykle bagatelizowane przez paleontologię, a niesłusznie. – W koprolitach jest zawarta niesamowita ilość informacji – opowiada mój gość. Skamieniała kupa nie śmierdzi i nie brudzi, a zawiera świetnie zachowane to, czego nie strawił dinozaur. Mogą to być resztki roślin, ale też szczątki ofiar: pokruszone kości, fragmenty zębów, łuski ryb czy nawet całe, kompletne owady. Podobną dawkę informacji niosą skamieniałe tzw. pellety gastralne, czyli niestrawione resztki pokarmu, które zwierzę zwymiotowało. Badania tych materiałów przyniosły dużo rewelacji. Wiemy na przykład, że silezaury (wczesne dinozaury lub zwierzęta z nimi spokrewnione, ich wspaniałe skamieniałości znaleziono w Krasiejowie w woj. opolskim) nie były wcale roślinożerne (tak oceniono po zębach z zachowanych szkieletów), ale wszystkożerne. Wiemy też, że pierwsze drapieżne dinozaury były nieduże i żywiły się głównie rybami.W odcinku usłyszycie też niesamowitą historię o najstarszych na świecie śladach pierwszych czworonogów, które dr Niedźwiedzki odkrył w świętokrzyskim Zachełmiu, oraz dowiecie się, co to są skały nieme paleontologicznie, czym zszokował dr Niedźwiedzki nobliwych fizyków z Grenoble, czego szuka paleobiolog na Grenlandii i dlaczego sukces dinozaurów mieści się w pudełku po zapałkach.
