The Jason & Mindy Podcast

In this episode, Jason and Mindy discuss various topics, including the cleanliness of pillowcases, the health benefits of eating avocados, and the rules of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. They also share some entertainment news, including Jojo Siwa's plans for motherhood and Britney Spears' response to criticism.https://www.youtube.com/@lowtreestudioshttps://www.lowtreestudios.com/GERMS DON'T REST – EVEN WHEN YOU DO:A media report quotes Dr. Gareth Nye, a program lead for medical science, as saying: “Your pillowcases could be considered dirtier than the toilet.” The good news? The good doctor also feels that since the bacteria on your pillowcase “are very likely to be from you to begin with, therefore (they) aren't harmful.” That doesn't mean, however, that you can just let your pillows bathe in your perspiration all summer long. Studies show that we can lose 500-700ml of sweat on an average night – which is absorbed by night clothing or bedding. Dr. Nye points to one study that found a typical pillow has as many as 16 different species of fungus and literally millions of fungus spores. He suggests we wash our sheets and pillowcases at least once per week – perhaps slightly less often if you sleep alone. ⇒ A new study says that eating one avocado every day has some amazing health benefits, including improved sleep and diet quality. Penn State University researchers say they were already aware that eating avocados is linked to lowered risk of cardiovascular disease, but this new study found that people who consumed avocados on a daily basis for 6 months saw an improvement in their scores for sleep health, diet quality and blood lipids, such as cholesterol, without adversely affecting body weight.SURPRISE HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME RULES:Gwen Stefani is getting her own star tomorrow, which means she must have passed these perhaps-unexpected rules…✪ Anyone can nominate a star: There is a $250 fee to submit an application. Applications must include a written promise from the star or his/her rep to attend the star unveiling, if approved. And the applicant has to agree to financially sponsor the star presentation. More about those coming up…✪ The star must attend the unveiling: This is known as the “Springsteen Clause”, after he was nominated by a fan, and it was discovered there was nothing in writing that said the star must show up to be honored. (We're guessing they make exceptions for the dead?)✪ Someone has to pay for it: When it started in 1987, a star cost about $3,500. This year? $55,000. Next year? $75,000, “due to rising costs”. And who pays? The person who does the nominating is responsible for “sponsorship costs” once accepted.✪ Stars have a two-year window to schedule their ceremony: From the website: “Those selected for stars have a 2-year time frame in which to set their ceremony date” before the selections expire.✪ There are special rules for posthumous honors: Ah – here we are. Just one posthumous award can be given each year. And these must be a 2 year or more wait after the date of the star's death, to prevent marginal stars from being swept in by emotion immediately after their death. (Because there are no “marginal stars” already enshrined, are there? I'm looking at you, Chris Berman, Tinker Bell, and Guy Fieri!)✪ It requires at least a 5-year career: To receive a star, one must achieve longevity in their entertainment category of 5 years or more”. (So much for 15 minutes of fame?)✪ Companies can't receive stars (but there's an asterisk): The Walk of Fame Committee does something else called the Awards of Excellence. These are done on private property. They look like a Walk of Fame star, with a different font. For example, at the El Capitan Theatre, there is a star for the Disney Company, on private property, adjacent to the Walk of Fame.ENTERTAINMENT...

A member of Hall of Fame Coach Don Gambril’s City of Commerce Swim Team, she became a member of the 1964 USA Olympic Swim Team competing in the breaststroke. After her competitive career, she coached swimming for a few years, but soon turned her attention to the coaching and development of water polo, which has stayed with her ever since. In 1971, Sandy started the City of Commerce Water Polo program and coached the team to many national championships. She soon moved into positions of leadership, serving as the USA’s Women’s International Chairperson from 1976 to 1978. From 1980 to the present, she has given water polo clinics all around the world including New Zealand, Australia, England, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Singapore, India, France, Germany, Brazil and Mexico. In 1977, Commerce hosted the first-ever Women’s International Tournament in the United States and Sandy was the Tournament Director. She was one of the original coaches who began the push for the inclusion of women’s water polo at the Olympic Games, which became a reality in 2000, Sydney.Since her beginning days, Sandy has had an extensive head water polo coaching career in women’s water polo. She was the first Head Coach for the United States Junior National Team (1979). For 17 years (1980-1996, 1998), she was head coach of the USA Senior National Team. She was also head coach of the Queensland, Australia State Team (1996) and the Brazilian Senior National Team (1999-2002) where she coached at the first Pan American Games to include women’s water polo and the first-ever wins against the United States by the Brazilian team. For two years (2000-2002), she was coach of the Tualatin Hills Water Polo Club in Portland, Oregon and then Head Coach of Team Vegas in Las Vegas (1992-2000) and currently Team Vegas/Henderson (2002 to present). Other positions of leadership include: U.S. Water Polo Masters Advisory Committee (2008-2011), USA Water Polo Hall of Fame Committee (2006-2010), USA Water Polo Board of Directors (2010 to present), U.S. Olympic Development Director of the West Region (2011 to present) and Co-Chairperson of the U.S.A. USA Water Polo Coaches Association.Sandy was coach to the gold medal team at the 2006 FINA Masters World Championships and the women’s 50+ division at the 2012 Senior Games. She is the first and only female water polo coach in the U. S. Water Polo Hall of Fame and in her honor, the “Sandy Nitta Distinguished Women’s Coach Award” is presented annually by United States Water Polo.Sandy’s greatest influence to her water polo players under her guidance is her character. As a competitive swimmer, she was short making it difficult competing against taller swimmers. She would be leading by a body length before the turn and come out of the turn a half body length behind. But her drive and toughness led to a position on the Olympic Team. She fought for the “underdog”. When she began coaching the City Of Commerce Water Polo Team, it consisted mostly of lower income, Hispanic families who also were not tall nor came from competitive backgrounds. Yet, they achieved success. When coaching the USA Women’s National Team in the 1980’s, she had 125 to 150 players across the entire United States. Even when coaching them outside of the California hot-bed of water polo, Sandy achieved success from her players. It shows greatness and sound character.Sandy enjoys fresh water fishing, playing video games and playing poker. But you may want to think twice before putting any money on the poker table. She made it to the final table at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas - a real smart competitor.

Episode 357 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast visits with Lehigh alum and wrestling media member Denny Diehl as he shares his memories and stories about the late John Harmon. John J. Harmon, the EIWA's Sports Information Director Emeritus, passed away Tuesday, September 26, 2017. A 1959 graduate of Lehigh University John earned a B.A. in mathematics, is survived by his wife Elaine Oberkotter Harmon and his daughters Debbie and Wendy and their families. John was a computer programmer/systems analyst by profession. Many knew him as the publisher for twenty-four years of the EIWA Newsletter, the clearinghouse of all information regarding the teams of the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association, the nation's oldest wrestling conference. He was the EIWA Sports Information Director for more than two decades. John worked with Greg Strobel, the EIWA's Executive Director, to create the conference's first website which incorporates many of the features of the EIWA Newsletter, which ceased publication in 2014. John co-authored the first and second editions of The History of the EIWA and from 1983-90 was editor of National Mat News. In 2012 he received the Dellinger Award as the nation's top wrestling journalist. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, OK, its NJ Wrestling Hall of Fame chapter and served a decade on the EIWA Hall of Fame Committee. The generosity of John and Elaine to Lehigh was boundless. They were the lead donors for the renovations of Grace Hall that became Leeman-Turner Arena. Typical of the man, he insisted that the arena be named, not after himself, but after Hall of Fame coaches Gerry Leeman and Thad Turner. The Harmons also supported the building of Goodman Stadium, the head wrestling coach and assistant coaches’ endowments, the Michael Caruso Wrestling Complex, and the John J. Harmon '59 Wrestling Scholarship. Elaine assembled thousands of care packages for service members who were deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. His community activities included the Lawrence Township Board of Education, the Mercer County Human Services Advisory Council, the Lawrence Rotary Club, and several New Jersey statewide committees dealing with education. A lifelong railroad enthusiast and investor, Harmon was a member of the National Railroad Historical Society.
