The No. 1 Penn State wrestling team is ready to close out the dual meet portion of its schedule on Friday when it hosts EIWA program American on Friday night at Rec Hall. The Nittany Lions are fresh off clinching a Big Ten regular season title and are gearing up for the postseason. We cover that and much more in this week's BWI wrestling show and pocast.Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel start this episode with a review of the team's two most recent wins. Last Friday night, Penn State beat Ohio State 27-13 in Columbus to secure its 69th consecutive dual meet victory. Then, it topped Illinois 29-9 on Sunday to set a Big Ten record with 70 straight wins in addition to winning the conference's dual meet crown. Carr and Pickel discuss the top takeaways, including Beau Bartlett beating Jesse Mendez to earn the No. 1 spot at 141 pounds, freshman Luke Lilledahl bouncing back from being pinned Friday night to record a technical fall triumph on Sunday, and the latest injury information. From there, the show turns its attention to what lies ahead for the Nittany Lions. Sanderson said that the program is dealing with some illness issues, which could impact Friday night's lineup. This year's senior class includes the likes of Bartlett, four-time NCAA champ Carter Starocci, and defending heavyweight champ Greg Kerkvliet, among others.

Put AI to work on your farm: https://farmwave.io/Eiwa: https://eiwa.ag/Today's episode features Carlos Hirsch, Chief Revenue Officer at Eiwa. Carlos is passionate about the intersection of agriculture, technology, and people. He has been in the Ag Industry for over 20 years and built an accomplished career in seed production, technology development and SaaS businesses. He has an agronomy degree from ESALQ in Piracicaba, Brazil and an Executive MBA from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He joined Eiwa in August of 2021 and resides with his family in St. Louis, MO.Carlos and Tim talk about what makes data problems in agriculture unique versus a lot of other industries. Their solution, that they call the Eiwa Vault, combines all types of data sources like weather, machinery, satellite, drones, field notes etc. and puts them all in a place and format that makes them accessible to other tools and ultimately, actionable decisions. Their original market for this are researchers and R&D teams so they could spend more time on leveraging the data and extracting insights, but they've also moved into offering this to large commercial farming companies as well. This has a lot of implications for the big wave in advancements in artificial intelligence, which we seem to be experiencing right now.Stay tuned to the end of today's episode for a detailed spotlight of Jason Diekevers and how he's using technology like Farmwave on his farm.
It's SHORT TIME SHOTS … a quick look at the day's top wrestling stories. Here's the good stuff for Monday, October 16.-The University of Iowa's women's wrestling team recently opened its doors to Ukrainian wrestlers in need of a training facility. Due to political unrest and inadequate resources in Ukraine, the athletes were struggling to find a suitable place to hone their skills. The collaboration not only provides the Ukrainian team with top-notch training conditions but also offers an invaluable cultural exchange experience for both parties. This initiative underscores the global community's role in supporting athletes irrespective of geopolitical challenges. Read Vanessa Miller's full story at thegazette.com.-The giant women's basketball game and Iowa's entry into the college football Top 25 despite an anemic offense were also newsworthy in Iowa, but so was the return of a literary heavyweight. Acclaimed author and former wrestler John Irving returned to Iowa City to share excerpts from his unpublished novel and reflect on his past. Known not just for his literary contributions but also for his wrestling background, Irving discussed how the discipline and rigor of wrestling influenced his writing career. The event offered attendees a multifaceted view of Irving, blending the worlds of literature and athletics. His visit underscored the enduring impact of Iowa City on both his writing and wrestling journeys. More at the Daily Iowan.-Eliana Bommarito secured her second straight gold medal at the Beach World Series, earning her the prestigious title of UWW Senior Beach World Champion. The event, a significant milestone in the wrestling calendar, showcased her dominating performance over a series of matches. Her back-to-back victory cements her status as a leading figure in the realm of beach wrestling. This latest win adds another high-profile accolade to her already impressive career, solidifying her reputation on the international stage. A Michigan native, she's currently a wrestler at Indian Hills Community College in Iowa. The full recap is available at The Mat dot com-Kyle Klingman from Flo Wrestling had a dynamic interview with one of the top young women in high school wrestling - Minnesota native Gigi Bragg. Klingman dove into topics about Bragg's experiences wrestling in two states, why she represents Michigan in the offseason and her singing of the national anthem at wrestling events nationwide, starting when she was in elementary school. -The Drexel University wrestling team has released its 2023-24 schedule, featuring four tournaments, eight conference duals, and appearances at the EIWA and NCAA Championships. Meanwhile, the University of Michigan's wrestling team is gearing up for a promising season, blending returning talent with All-American transfers, thanks to effective use of the transfer portal. Check out the preview on InterMat. As the new season approaches, FloWrestling has spotlighted wrestlers with the longest active winning streaks in Division I, and also provided a comprehensive list of returning NCAA All-Americans set to compete. InterMat continues its preseason tradition by counting down the top 50 collegiate wrestlers to watch this season.

When wrestlers, coaches, media and fans gather to talk about the G.O.A.T. at Lehigh University, the conversation always includes Mark Lieberman. Combining all styles, he is considered the Mountain Hawks' greatest overall wrestler. A 1979 Sports Illustrated article described Mark as “the guttiest and the best” college wrestler that year. He was a two-time undefeated NCAA champion at 177 pounds in 1978 and 1979 after a runner-up finish in 1977 at 167. He is part of another special wrestling family with his brother, Mike, winning the NCAA championship for Lehigh in 1975 at 177 pounds. Mark was the first four-time EIWA champion in school history, pinning a tournament record 12 of 16 opponents. In his senior year, he swept the EIWA's major awards, winning the Outstanding Wrestler Trophy, the Sheridan Trophy for most falls and the Fletcher Award for scoring the most team points in his career. He still holds Lehigh records for season falls (16), career falls (43) and most bonus points in a season (95.2% of his matches in 1979). Wrestling for the New York Athletic Club, he was an AAU national champion in 1977 and won the U.S. Wrestling Federation national championship in 1978, 1979 and 1980. Lieberman won a gold medal at the World Cup in 1978 and a silver medal in 1979. He won the Pan Am Wrestling Championships in 1977. He pinned his idol, 1976 Olympic gold medalist and Distinguished Member John Peterson, in the finals of the National Open in 1978 to earn the Outstanding Wrestler Award, the Most Falls Award, the U.S. Wrestling Federation Grand Champion Award and 1978 Athlete of the Year. He also defeated Distinguished Members Wade Schalles, Chris Campbell and Ed Banach in freestyle competition. The 1980 Olympic boycott cost him a chance at an Olympic medal. Helping launch the Blair Academy (New Jersey) freestyle program, he won the AAU Junior World national championship in 1974 and 1975 and was the U.S. Wrestling Federation Junior national champion in 1973. Three times Lieberman won the National Independent Schools championship (National Preps) from 1972-1974 and was outstanding wrestler twice. Mark was inducted into the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches' Hall of Fame in 1987, the Roger S. Penske/Lehigh Athletics Hall of Fame in 1994, the EIWA Hall of Fame in 1998 and the Blair Academy Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017. For excelling in collegiate and international wrestling during his record-setting career, Mark Lieberman is honored as a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. This week on @champandthetramp the boys welcome @coachgoodale on. If you’re a fan of collegiate wrestling you’re gonna want to tune into this episode. @coachgoodale is the former coach at Jackson Memorial High School where he coached 4 state champions. He then was offered the head coach position @ruwrestling in 2007. To say the wresting program at RU was struggling when he came on board would be an understatement. Undaunted, Coach Goodale accepted the challenge and completely turned the program around starting with his grass roots recruiting style. Under Goodale’s watch, RU has two individual national titles (Anthony Ashnault & Nick Suriano in 2019), three national finalists, 15 All-Americans, five conference champions (four Big Ten, one EIWA), 80 NCAA Championship bids, 32 Big Ten Conference Championships placewinners and 42 placewinners at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships. The program has tallied an impressive 183-79-1 dual meet record during his 14 years, “On the Banks.” @coachgoodale is such a humble guy and great interview and an absolute legend here in NJ. Thanks so much for coming on Coach ! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Episode 66 of the ODU Wrestling Monarch Matcast, today, we visit with associate head coach Daryl Thomas. Practice has started and a new season of Monarch wrestling is here. On today’s show, we’ll break down the opening week of practice and talk about this year’s schedule and the opponents we’ll see coming to The Ted this year and what road trips Monarch Nation can be prepared to see around the country. Before we start, thanks to all the feedback received from #MonarchNation about the previous episode, the tribute to the late Jamie Kelly. Giving Day: Monarchs calling previous donors and contributors. I got a call from Larry Early. We’ll put the link to continue to give in the show notes for this episode. Like right here. Coach Thomas recently spoke at the Chesapeake Sports Club. What’s an event like this mean for a coach? Every starter who wrestled at the conference tournament is back. Coach Martin says there’s a belief on this year’s team that he hasn’t often seen. What do you see? Monarchs are ranked preseason No. 19 by W.I.N. Magazine, No. 20 by Trackwrestling and No. 21 by Flowrestling. Rankings from Amateur Wrestling News, InterMat and the NWCA have not yet been released. Schedule for 2019-20 Blue-Silver Intrasquad, first chance to see most, if not all of the Monarchs wrestle at home at the Jim Jarrett Athletic Administration Building on Thursday, October 24 at 7 p.m. November, the season kicks off with a new event hosted by The Citadel on November 3, the Battle at The Citadel. This includes ODU, American, Duke, NC State, Presbyterian, Stanford and the host school, The Citadel. It’s multiple entries and designed for mat time. On the same day, some Monarchs will also head up to the Princeton Open in New Jersey. Who is going where? November 10, the Monarchs will head to the Journeymen Classic, another modified individual tournament where pools of athletes will compete against one another. Follows the Northeast Duals. First dual of the year comes against No. 13 NC State on November 15 in Raleigh. The team will stick around for the Wolfpack Open that following Sunday. November will close out with the Navy Classic in Annapolis on November 23 just after Thanksgiving. December opens with a drive up to Fairfax for the Patriot Open on December 7 before the heading to your old neck of the woods, Edwardsville for a dual with SIUE. The calendar year closes out as the Monarchs will head to Fort Lauderdale to compete at the South Beach Duals for the first time. MAC foe Missouri is on the schedule. Who else will the Monarchs face as the format is two duals each day, then some time on the beach. 2020 Opens with a trip to Amish country as a number of Monarchs will compete at the Franklin & Marshall David Lehman Open in Lancaster. While not officially a home date, the Monarchs first competition locally will be at the 40th annual Virginia Duals in the Hampton Coliseum. The field this year includes ODU, Duke, Fresno State, Kent State, Maryland, Penn, Rider and Virginia. Now the conference slate in the MAC has changed significantly with the absorption of the old Eastern Wrestling League. January 17 sees the Monarchs home opener against No. 26 Lock Haven, a well-coached gritty team from central Pennsylvania. Old CAA rival Rider will get reacquainted with the Monarchs on January 19 at The Ted. The following week, it’s a road trip through the Keystone State and a date with Edinboro on January 24 and a dual with Clarion two days later on the 26th. Virginia Tech will come to town on Sunday for the annual alumni dual on Sunday, February 2. Tech always brings a big crowd. Another former CAA opponent, Drexel, which competes in the EIWA, will come to town on Monday, February 10. A non-conference dual with Navy takes place on Valentine’s day up in Annapolis, before the Monarchs wind through Fairfax on the way home to take on the Patriots of George Mason two days later. So with Rider, Drexel and George Mason on the schedule, that’s three former conference foes set to tangle. The Monarchs close out the home schedule with Bloomsburg on February 23 before heading to Northern Illinois University on March 7-8 for the Mid-American Conference Championships. So no Central Michigan or Ohio, possibility of seeing Kent State, but this is a drastically different conference schedule than previous years. It’s Episode 88 of Inside Virginia Tech Wrestling, welcome back again #HokieNation, Today we are talking about the 2019-20 wrestling schedule with head coach Tony Robie. Before we get to that, a few updates to make you aware of. Mekhi Lewis finished fifth at the Continental Cup in Russia, his first senior-level freestyle tournament at 74kg, while Ty Walz finished with a bronze medal at 97kg at the same event. Thoughts on both Mekhi and Ty’s performance in Russia while representing Team USA and the Southeast Regional Training Center? Last episode, we brought in new volunteer assistant coach Jared Haught, a three-time All-American for the Hokies during his career. What’s it been like to work with Haught now in a coaching role vs. the relationship with him as an athlete? Now to the schedule, first, we see that Virginia Tech comes in ranked across the board by Trackwrestling, Flowrestling, W.I.N. and The Open Mat. We still haven’t seen the Coaches Poll, AWN or InterMat as yet. No. 16 by The Open Mat No. 17 by W.I.N. Magazine No. 17 by Flowrestling No. 19 on Trackwrestling, Thoughts on the rankings, which at this point, is almost universally a tournament-scoring rubric. Now to the schedule. The first time Hokie fans will get a chance to see the team compete is on October 25 at 7 p.m. at Cassell with the intrasquad. Again, the intrasquad, 10-15 years ago, wasn’t as big of a thing as it is now. Back then, it was Lehigh, Oklahoma State, those types of programs doing the intrasquad thing. Now, the majority of Division I programs are doing something like it. What’s good about it? You waste no time getting into the teeth of college wrestling, facing off with Missouri in Blacksburg at Cassell on November 2, the kickoff weekend of college wrestling. You’ve wrestled the Tigers in the early part of the season the last few years, but why the opening weekend? The Southeast Open is again a spot where Hokie fans can get a glimpse of a good portion of the team. This one’s in Roanoke and let’s talk location, differences, similarities on this event which takes place a day after the Missouri dual. It was recently released that on November 10 against Northwestern, the first Mat on the Mound will take place at Virginia Tech’s baseball facility, English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park. It was either last year or the year before, we saw Missouri and Illinois do an outdoor dual at a softball stadium. Weather permitting, what was the thought process behind doing this with the baseball field? Ohio State will host the Hokies at their new wrestling facility, the Covelli Center, on November 17. Again, this is an opponent who has been consistently on the schedule. There’s a pipeline of Ohio kids who come to Blacksburg and how much of this is to make sure Hokie wrestling continues to grow roots in Ohio and how much of it is getting that national-caliber look for the starters? The Navy Classic, a small, but dynamic tournament in Annapolis is on the schedule during the Thanksgiving holiday. About a five-hour drive up 81 and over to the D.C. metro area. This is the first time I can recall the Navy Classic being on the schedule. What do you like about the tournament and what about it from a scheduling standpoint is beneficial? Las Vegas and the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. Closing out the calendar year with a home dual before Christmas with Chattanooga. Last year, it was the dual with West Virginia around this time on the calendar. This time it’s the Mocs. The new year will open with a trip to Mount Pleasant and a dual with Central Michigan on January 3 before a home dual on January 11 with West Virginia. The Virginia Duals has been working on trying to bring itself back and right now, the tournament doesn’t seem like a good fit competitively for Virginia Tech despite the large group of Hokie fans who live in Hampton Roads. On January 18-19, it’s a trip to the Empire State and a pair of EIWA teams. On Saturday, it’s a dual with Binghamton, your former coaching place of residence, and on Sunday, it’s a dual with Cornell, who seems to be looking ahead as several of the Big Red’s best wrestlers will be opting to take the year off in preparation to train to make the 2020 Olympic Team. Five of the next six duals are with conference opponents as you close out the season with six straight single dual weekends. From January 25-February 22, you go home against North Carolina, on the road at Virginia, on the road in a non-conference dual at Old Dominion, the Moss Arts Dual is February 8 against Duke, you go to Raleigh on February 15 to take on NC State before closing out the season on the road at Pitt before turning around two weeks later and competing at the ACC Championships at Pittsburgh. The ACC sets the conference schedule for the most part, so thoughts on how you guys close out the season with single weigh-in events. Now, thoughts on the NCAA Championships in a giant football stadium. U.S. Bank Stadium, home of the Minnesota Vikings. We’re looking at the potential of nearly 45,000 wrestling fans in there. How’s the ask been for tickets this year after the pandemonium that was 2019 in Pittsburgh? Got a question? Email the show at insidevtwrestling@gmail.com to ask your question for Coach Robie and the staff. In this episode, Dr. Sippel surveys the field of environmental studies in Japan before sketching the environmental history of the Tokugawa period. We discuss Tokugawa flood control projects in the context of questions about early modern sustainability, unpack essentialized ideas of a unique Japanese connection to nature, and interrogate the environmentalist movement in Japan today.
Friday night saw some tremendous action around the country, but most of it centered in Big Ten Country. That’s right, to hell with your high school football playoffs - except for Poquoson - Go Islanders - it’s wrestling season and we had some fun stuff on Friday night. This is Short Time Shots, a sometimes relevant look at the day’s scores and more in college wrestling, I’m Jason Bryant and Schell’s Firebrick might be my second favorite beer. My favorite beer sits across the border in Wisconsin. It’s called Spotted Cow. Speaking of Wisconsin, they Badgers and Chris Bono were wild and crazy on Friday night as they went to Lincoln and knocked off No. 12 Nebraska 22-21 on criteria. It was Coach Bono’s first Big Ten win as the Badgers head coach and it was all sorts of crazy. First off, Ryan Christensen rallied from a 6-4 third-period deficit to pin Nebraska’s Mikey Labriola with just a couple of ticks left on the clock at 174 pounds. Every point would count here as an excited Chris Bono was docked a team point for control of mat area. Another key bonus victory came at 125 pounds as Zeke Moisey benefitted from a quick injury default win over Connor Brown. Brown rolled his ankle in Moisey’s first attack of the match, and then tried to restart the bout. That didn’t happen and Nebraska went up 18-12 with just three weights to go. Jens Lantz came through for the Badgers at 133, delivering what could be the most relevant victory of his college career, a 10-3 win over Tucker Sjomeling. Then six more points came as 141 pound Tristan Moran pinned Nebraska reserve Christian Miller in the first period to give the Badgers a 21-18 lead heading 149. This one was wild. Cole Martin nearly ended it for the Badgers with a cradle, but then Collin Purinton turned the tables and nearly pinned Martin, which would have given the Huskers the win. Purinton got the W, but it was the second criteria - most falls that gave Bono and company the W. Oh, we didn’t even talk about the most anticipated match of the night - Evan Wick beat Isaiah White 12-5. Wick did it with only two takedowns and no nearfall points. Next time, me thinks White will NOT be taking down when he has choice as Wick drew three stall points while working on top at 165. No. 2 Ohio State ventured west and pounded Cal Baptist 42-0 in front of over 3,000 fans in Riverside, California. As I’ve mentioned on this show previously, Cal Baptist began its four-year transitional period to Division I this year and the Lancers aren’t hiding with a soft schedule. No. 3 Iowa hosted Princeton in just the second meeting between the two programs and the first in 17 years. The night started off with a highly anticipated matchup between returning national champion Spencer Lee of Iowa and Princeton’s highly regarded true freshman Pat Glory. Lee blew the doors off Glory, getting up 14-0 at one point before finishing off the technical fall in the second period. Back-to-back falls by Austin DeSanto and Max Murin fired up the strong, focused and energized crowd at Carver-Hawkeye. Top-ranked Matt Kolodzik got Princeton on the board with a gritty 7-4 win over Pat Lugo, avenging a defeat from last year. Iowa also picked up a fall from Alex Marinelli at 165 pounds. No. 7 Missouri and No. 10 Virginia Tech didn’t really have much of a thriller, despite some matches being close. The Tigers won their 22nd straight dual, topping the Hokies 21-8. The biggest win of the night sent many fans in Last Man Standing contests to the showers early as Connor Flynn knocked off Mekhi Lewis 8-6 at 165 pounds. The other two matchup of ranked wrestlers both went Mizzou’s way as John Erneste beat Korbin Myers at 133 and Grant Leeth beat Ryan Blees 3-1 at 149. No. 9 Cornell wasn’t tested in a 36-6 win over Binghamton in EIWA action. No. 20 North Dakota State survived an upset attempt in California as the Bison had to get a major decision from 125-pounder Brent Fleetwood to beat Fresno State 21-20. No. 23 Rutgers pounded Hofstra 40-3, giving coach Scott Goodale his 166th career victory as the Scarlet Knights head coach, tying former coach John Sacchi for first on the all-time coaching list in New Brunswick - or is it Piscataway? In Division II, Pitt-Johnstown stopped Millersville 30-6, while Ohio Valley beat NAIA West Virginia Tech 27-24 in a matchup of two West Virginia programs. The Mark Rial era in Storm Lake started out well as Buena Vista went up to Minnesota and beat St. John’s 31-13 to give the new Beavers coach his first head coaching win. Washington & Lee, that’s Dubya-N-Ell for those in that part of Virginia, beat Southern Virginia 36-9 in a crosstown scrap. The two schools are six miles apart - and get this - Southern Virginia is in Buena Vista … Virginia. In the NAIA, the Fire of Southeastern topped Campbellsville 27-12 in Mid-South Conference action. Wins by Jason Davis, Jesse Pryor and Silas Root closed things out for coach Javier Maldonado’s squad. In junior college action, the Clackamas win streak continues. The Cougars knocked off North Idaho 34-3 to extend its win streak to 41 in row! Head wrestling coach Chris Ayres joins TigerCast to preview this weekend's EIWA Championships. He breaks down some of Princeton's top contenders, including reigning Eastern champion Matthew Kolodzik, and talks about some of the dangerous unseeded wrestlers in the draw. The interview begins at the 4:15 mark.
On Friday night, I was set to plop down here in the office and fire out another fine episode of Short Time Shots. By the way, that's the show you're listening to and it's a look back at the day's scores and more in college wrestling. I'd also be your host, Hall of Fame wrestling writer, broadcaster and announcer Jason Bryant. But once my wife and I finished having some quiet time watching the most recent episode of Top Chef, I went to the Mat Talk Online headquarters and realized there were like a lot of duals last night. By the time I finished logging them into the nation's most robust college wrestling scoreboard, which you can find at almanac.mattalkonline.com, it was nearly 2 a.m. and I had to be up early Saturday to make chocolate chip pancakes for the girls. Sometimes, I just don't have the time to push out a daily scores episode. Today is different, because there were 104 dual meets that I could track on Saturday - there's a few JUCOs that won't report their results until March, but that's not important right now. It's Saturday, January 27 and here's what we had to roll with. We had two stellar top 10 duals, one in the Big Ten and another between former Big 12 rivals. Where to begin? Let's go with the place that had the bigger crowd and that would almost always be Iowa. No. 7 Michigan beat No. 4 Iowa 21-17 in front of over 10,000 fans in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Michigan wasn't as explosive as it was a week prior when the Wolverines trounced Minnesota. In fact, it seemed like they left a lot of potential bonus points on the table. Credit Iowa for wrestling very tough and nearly pulling out the win in a dual where they were without the services of All-American Michael Kemerer. Alex Marinelli stayed unbeaten, topping Logan Massa 3-2 at 165 pounds, but Michigan would sweep the last four weights with the biggest win coming at 197 pounds where Kevin Beazley topped Cash Wilcke 6-5. The win set up the dual-winning triumph by heavyweight Adam Coon, who beat Sam Stoll 3-2. In Stillwater, things were a bit wild and crazy, like the Wild and Crazy Kids. Anyone remember that? Chances are, if you're below the age of 32, you don't. Nickelodeon was so awesome back in the day -- You Can't Do That On Television, Double Dare, Turkey TV. Oh, speaking of things you're not supposed to do - Jaydin Eierman of Missouri decided to complicate things even more by pinning two-time national champion Dean Heil at 141 pounds in Missouri's 21-19 win over No. 5 Oklahoma State. Combine that with Willie Miklus' modest upset over Preston Weigel at 197 pounds and Brian Smith has his Tigers 16-0 and a clear No. 3 in the Coaches Poll. What's going to make things interesting in the voting this week is the fact Iowa was without Kemerer, but hey, big boy sports right - you play without your starting quarterback, you lose, you drop in the rankings. Rank it like a team sport, when you're looking at dual rankings. No. 10 Virginia Tech got quite a fight from Duke, but a fall by Zack Zavatsky at 184 pounds gave the Hokies enough breathing room to improve to 2-0 in the ACC and 12-2 overall. Zavatsky has scored 10 straight bonus point wins. He also helped the Hokies knock off Lehigh on Friday night. Cornell won two matches on the day. The Big Red beat Harvard 35-3 and Brown 27-9. The two wins give Cornell 80 straight dual meet wins in the Ivy League. Fredy Stroker saw his first action in the Cornell lineup. He split matches on the day, beating Harvard's Brock Wilson but losing to 500th-year senior Justin Staudenmayer of Brown. What's also of interest is Max Dean of Cornell beat his cousin Kanon Dean of Harvard 3-0. Last year, Max's brother Gabe beat Kanon. Must be a rather uncomfortable silence at the kids table on holidays up in Michigan. Rider has emerged as the top dog -- or in this case, horse -- in the EWL after the 19th-ranked Broncs beat 23rd-ranked Lock Haven 22-12. Let's cut right to the chase here. 165 pounds, right? Well, Chance Marsteller continued his climb up the rankings, beating two-time All-American Chad Walsh 8-4. The only other ranked team in action was No. 22 Wyoming, which beat Fresno State 40-6. Ok, let's just get this out of the way, Dewey Krueger is the Jose Oquendo of college wrestling. Don't know who Jose Oquendo is? Look it up. Or don't. The guy was the ultimate utility man in baseball. He could play every position, and over the course of his major league career, he did. Last week, Krueger weighed in at 157 and yes, won by fall at 197. On Saturday, he got another victory, this time at 184 pounds. If Missouri would have been able to borrow him, I'm sure Brian Smith would have thrown HIM out there at heavyweight. Other things in the Division I world that you SHOULD be paying attention to - Binghamton improved to 8-4 and they stand at 5-0 in the EIWA, which is technically in first place. Cornell is 3-0 in conference, but 5-0 is greater than 3-0. Today the Bearcats beat Penn 19-18 and Drexel 21-12 to complete the cheesesteak sweep. That's one helluva job interim head coach Kyle Borshoff has done since taking over the program earlier this season. Sometimes those types of teams can just fall apart with a mid-season coaching change. That loss pretty much seals Drexel's fate from getting ranked this season. But yes, the Dragons did wrestle without Austin DeSanto, but what did we say earlier about wrestling with who you've got? Oh, by the way, that Bell's Hopslam I was talking about the other night? Yeah, pine tree juice. I got about two swigs into it and went NOPE. You can keep your double imperial death star IPAs. I like some hops, but mother of all that's holy, yes, it tasted like stoned cat Christmas tree urine. But hey, I guess some people like that, but I ain't them people. Hofstra's been catching some hell, but the Pride today picked up a good 22-17 win over Buffalo after falling behind 14-0 early on. Dennis Papadatos - the best hair product game in college wrestling. Navy won the All-Academy championships hosted in Charleston, South Cackalacky by The Citadel. The Mids won six individual titles and Jadaen Bernstein was the outstanding wrestler of the event. Army West Point was second. That wraps up our Division I recap, all those scores and more again, at almanac.mattalkonline.com. Speaking of Division I, you know I've talked about the best, most awesome, stellar, bodacious NCAA Division I preview guide? Well, it's available for pre-order now by going to mattalkonline.com/fanguide18. Use the offer code "podcast" and save yourself $5. Trust me, it's the ONE thing you need going into Cleveland this year. Yeah, you don't need clothes, but you need this digital preview guide. In other places around the country, Grand View won its 64th dual in a row. The Vikings beat second-ranked Missouri Valley on Friday before finishing up the conference dual schedule with a 31-16 win over No. 14 Baker. Grand View hasn't lost a dual since 2013. They've only lost NINE in school history. This is the 10th year of the program. Ashland went 6-0 at the Midwest Duals hosted by Belmont Abbey, which isn't exactly in the Midwest, it's in North Carolina. Four of those wins came on Saturday. Bellarmine earned its first two conference victories in school history. What's interesting is Bellarmine, which is in Louisville, Kentucky, started a wrestling program by absorbing what was left of the program at St. Catherine's, which closed its entire school two years ago. The Knights beat Truman State and Drury. Tiffin also picked up four wins on the day, beating Queens, Belmont Abbey, Coker and Limestone. Western State Colorado upset No. 10 Central Oklahoma 26-18 in a single dual, while in Division III, we had multiple wins registered by a slew of teams as quads were aplenty. Centenary, Johnson & Wales, TCNJ, NYU, Gettysburg and York -- the one in Pennsylvania -- all had successful dual days. Earlier this month, the namesake of the Pete Willson Invitational, former Wheaton coach Pete Willson passed away. The tournament named in his honor is like the Southern Scuffle or Midlands of Division III. On Saturday, Messiah put five in the finals and outdistanced second-place Mount Union to claim the team championship. The most impressive performances were turned in by 125-pound champion Carlos Fuentes of Wheaton, who beat Baldwin Wallace's Chris Doyle 12-3 in the finals. Mount Union's Jairod James knocked off 2016 Division III champion Ben Swarr 6-4 in the finals at 174 pounds. And UW-La Crosse's Wesley Schultz pinned Messiah All-American Kyle Koser in a minute in the 197-pound final. The tournament showed good individual balance as eight different teams won individual titles, led by Messiah's three -- Stephen Maloney at 149, Kevin Edwards at 157 and Jeff Hojnacki at 165. So apparently Tom Arnold can rest easy now that I'm issuing a CORRECTION on my statement from the January 19 edition of Short Time Shots. As Dan Ransick pointed out, Tom Arnold was NOT in Little Giants, rather it was Ed O'Neill who went opposite of Rick Moranis in the football flick. Where did I get my streams crossed? Tom Arnold, who allegedly roomed with Takedown Radio's Scott Casber at some point in their college careers, was in BIG BULLY with Moranis. That one's on me. What did I say about not quoting a movie if you haven't seen it? Well, if you've only seem most of two different movies and you think they're the same, best stay away from those references too, unless you find a flick where I can yell STUDENT PRINCES out loud. That's Heidelberg, by the way. And if you're wondering what this is, this is Short Time Shots, a look back at the day's college wrestling scores and more from January 20, 2018, I'm Hall of Fame wrestling writer, announcer and broadcaster Jason Bryant. I'm also not a Vikings fan, but it sure would be cool if they got to play at home during "THE BIG GAME." Today also makes me feel old as my baby sister Kitty turned 32 today. Yikes. I also threw a vice grip wrench through a wall today. I'll explain. Ninth-ranked Arizona State won its ninth dual in a row with a 27-15 win over Pac-12 rival Oregon State. The Sun Devils honored the 1988 NCAA Division I championship team led by Bobby Douglas -- which still to this day is the only Western team to have won an NCAA Division I wrestling championship. Arizona State's Ryan Millhof scored two and two late to rally past Ronnie Bresser at 125 pounds, but Oregon State did get one notable "upset" if you can call it that. Amar Dhesi topped Arizona State's rental-car eligible Tanner Hall 9-5 at heavyweight in a battle of returning All-Americans. Dhesi's been slow coming off his return to the lineup, but this is a solid win over Hall. Zahid Valencia went beast mode again registering a fall in 1:37 at 174 pounds. Z Money now has six falls, six techs and six majors on the year. Only four of his matches this season haven't ended in bonus, not counting the unofficial All-Star Classic win over Mark Hall. No. 22 Wyoming finished its trip through the Dakotas with a 32-6 win in Fargo over North Dakota State. Highlight there was at 133 pounds where Wyoming's Montorie Bridges ate up Cam Sykora 14-4, scoring six takedowns in the match. No. 23 Lock Haven beat George Mason 40-6 in the EWL. Harvard beat Franklin & Marshall 30-6. Little tidbit that most of you didn't know - Harvard head coach Jay Weiss is an F&M alum. He prefers Hildy's over Brendees, but I like the Irish hole more so than the other one. Plus, Hildy's only serves hot dogs. Austin DeSanto returned to the Drexel lineup to power the Dragons past Army West Point 20-12 in EIWA action. DeSanto put up 24 points in a major decision victory over Lane Peters at 133 pounds. Good win by Drexel's Stephen Loiseau over Rocco Caywood at 197. Utah Valley improved to 7-3 after a 20-15 non-conference win over CSU Bakersfield. What's interesting about that is it's a non-conference win in wrestling, but Utah Valley and CSU Bakersfield are in the same all-sports conference. Yup, they're both in the WAC. As you know, the Wolverines are in the Big 12 for wrestling and the Roadrunners are in the Pac-12. Taylor LaMont won his 11th in a row at 125. In Division II, top-ranked St. Cloud State improved to 14-0 and won its 23rd dual in a row with a 32-6 win over the Marauders of Mary. UW-Parkside beat Indianapolis and Bellarmine in conference action. You want to know something crazy? The Iowa Conference in Division III has been called the Big Ten of Division III. Powerhouse teams, powerhouse individuals. Well second-ranked Wartburg just won its 201st conference dual meet in a row. YES, IN A ROW. The Knights beat Dubuque 50-0, Central 39-6 and Buena Vista 54-0. They head into a rough stretch with Coe, Augsburg and Loras back-to-back-to-back to close out the regular season. Speaking of Loras, I had T.J. Miller on the most recent episode of The Ice Hour and the forecast of an Iowa Conference championship coming down to Miller's Duhawks and his alma mater Wartburg almost got toasted. Fifth-ranked Loras beat seventh-ranked Coe 17-16 on the third criteria to remain undefeated. If all plays out, Loras could be unbeaten heading into Waverly on February 6 with the conference dual meet championship on the line. Yes, Miller's dad is former Wartburg coach Jim Miller. In the NAIA, Embry-Riddle beat Warner Pacific and Eastern Oregon, but a notable win registered in Eastern Oregon's 34-10 win over Warner Pacific. Eastern Oregon's Drake Randall knocked off two-time All-American and 2016 NAIA national champion Blake Cooper 8-5 at 165 pounds. Randall trailed 5-4 heading into the third period, but scored an escape, a takedown and tacked on a riding time point for the big win. In the JUCOs, Clackamas topped North Idaho 34-14 in a battle of two traditional powerhouses. We also have some tournament scores to throw your way … Out in Marshall, Missouri, which I hear is a nice community, host Missouri Valley won the Missouri Valley Invitational, outdistancing Grand View 157-146. Before you freak out, Grand View's core of national champions didn't wrestle. Regardless, this event is a solid one on the mostly-NAIA calendar. Eight different schools crowned champions, but none were crowned by the tournament champion Vikings. Missouri Valley that is, since Grand View is also the Vikings. Lindsey Wilson and Hastings each had two, with one notable coming at 149 pounds where Cam Tessari - yes, THAT Cam Tessari - beat Tyler Fraley - yes, THAT Tyler Fraley, 6-1 in the finals. Ithaca won the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference championship on Saturday with 193.5 points. Brockport was second with 179. The Bombers picked up championships at 141 with Ben Brisman, 157 with Austin Whitney, Nick Velez at 165 and Jake Ashcraft at 184. Oneonta State All-American James Bethel picked up three falls and a major en route to the title. He pinned former Binghamton wrestler Conner Calkins in the finals in 32 seconds. Calkins is now at RIT. Messiah captured the Middle Atlantic Conference championship, outdistancing second place Delaware Valley 152.5-130. The Falcons crowned five champions -- Stephen Maloney at 149, Jeff Hojnacki at 165, 2016 Division III champion Ben Swarr at 174, Victor DeFrance at 184 and Kyle Koser at 197. On the women's side, McKendree hosted the Bearcat Open with the host Bearcats winning three individual titles, as did second-ranked Campbellsville. McKendree picked up golds from Genae Sampract at 101, Megan Black at 130 and Brandy Lowe at 191, while Campbellsville's Koral Sugiyama won gold at 123 as did Grace Bullen at 136 and Kayla Miracle at 143. Miracle beat Alexis Porter 2-1 in a matchup of two outright hammers in women's wrestling. Oklahoma City's Rachel Watters topped Mariah Harris of Campbellsville for gold at 170. It's Friday, you ain't got … well, this show is pretty much safe for work, so while I could throw lines from the movie Friday at you for hours on end, we'll just stick to the scores and more from a great night of wrestling. That's right folks, you can only quote Friday if you've seen it, and I seen it! I even have it on VHS. What's that got to do with wrestling? Nothing, but here's your rundown from January 19, 2018 -- I'm Hall of Fame wrestling writer, broadcaster and announcer Jason Bryant -- and this is how you start off your Saturday morning. Top-ranked Penn State blitzed No. 24 Purdue in front of another sellout Rec Hall crowd on Friday. Purdue got up early after Penn State had a rare forfeit at 125 pounds. PSU sports info reported that both eligible 125-pounders were sick and weren't in any shape to compete. That'd be the only W Purdue would get. The murderer's row of five NCAA champions swept 149 through 184 with three falls, a technical fall and a major. It might not be a stretch to say this might be the best 1-2-3-4-5 punch in the history of college wrestling -- and I don't subscribe to hyperbole. We all know this -- they're so freaking fun to watch. Missouri improved to 15-0 overall and 6-0 in the MAC with a 29-6 win over No. 17 Central Michigan. The win clinched the regular season title in the MAC for the Tigers, who won eight out of 10 including an upset win by Canten Marriott over Jordan Ellingwood at 184. Grant Leeth upended All-American Justin Oliver 3-1 at 149 pounds -- quite the recovery from a guy who many thought might not wrestle again after continued injuries. Couple matches of note in fifth-ranked Oklahoma State's 29-6 Big 12 win over West Virginia -- Nick Piccininni topped Zeke Moisey 4-0 at 125 pounds while 197-pound All-American Preston Weigel beat the ageless Jake Smith 5-2 at 197 pounds. Jake Smith … been wrestling at West Virginia since Millard Fillmore was President. Sixth-ranked NC State opened up ACC competition beating host Duke 32-6. Best result there was at 157 pounds where Hayden Hidlay topped Mitch Finesilver 10-5. Overall, Duke's tandem twins combined to go 2-2. Yes, there are four Finesilvers in the lineup and they are two different sets of twins -- and yes, they're brothers. The People's Champ Jacob Kasper beat Malik McDonald at heavyweight 8-6 for one of Duke's two wins. No. 8 Michigan topped Wisconsin 29-10, but that one had a couple of head-scratchers -- the biggest at 157 where Andrew Crone of Wisconsin knocked off All-American Alec Pantaleo 3-0. This was coming off Malik Amine's big fall over Cole Martin at 149. Hunter Ritter picked off All-American Kevin Beazely 3-2 at 197 pounds. No Logan Massa, but we did see Evan Wick tech Justin Hughes at 165. Adam Coon spent 41 seconds on the mat. No. 12 Cornell took advantage of two missing Lehigh starters and picked off the No. 7 Mountain Hawks 23-14. Individually, Cornell was powered by Yianni Diakomihalis, who earned an 8-0 major decision over Luke Karam at 141 and Ben Darmstadt, who pinned Jake Jakobsen at 2:36 of the first period. Lehigh still without Scotty Parker and Ryan Preisch, but you wrestle with who you got. No. 16 Rutgers picked up a 37-9 victory in the RAC over Hofstra. The Scarlet Knights improved to 5-3 on the season and picked up seven bonus victories in front of 3,139. Hofstra heavyweight Michael Hughes picked up his weight-class leading 13th fall of the season. Taylor Venz victory at 184 was enough to give Nebraska a 18-17 criteria victory at Northwestern. No. 25 North Carolina opened up ACC competition by rallying past Virginia 24-15. The Cavaliers jumped ahead with back-to-back falls at 125 and 133, including Jack Mueller pinning Zach Sherman at 133. The Tar Heels swept the last four weights, including a major decision from Ethan Ramos at 174 pounds over Will Schany. Ramos hadn't been in the lineup since the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. Old Dominion won three out of four overtime matches to scrap out a deceptively close 22-9 win over Buffalo in the MAC. Michael McGee, Luke Drugac and Antonio Agee all won matches with takedowns in the extra period. Michigan State beat Indiana 18-15 in the Big Ten. Moving on. Northern Colorado heavyweight Robert Winters picked up a win in sudden victory over Spencer Empey to give Troy Nickerson's Bears a 21-20 win over Cal Poly. Northern Colorado won the bonus battle with three majors and a fall compared to just two bonus wins by the Mustangs. In EIWA action, Bucknell, which is a bit of a walking wounded team right now, wrestled well and picked off Harvard 21-10. Best match there was Tyler Smith's 8-2 win at 141 pounds over A.J. Jaffe. Keeping it in the EIWA, Navy won the last five matches to surge past American 22-9. In Division II, top-ranked St. Cloud State headed west to Minot and picked up a 32-6 win over Minot State to improve to 13-0 on the season. Notre Dame College thrashed West Liberty 36-7. Out in Colorado, we had a couple of Rocky Mountain duals to take in -- Western State Colorado beat Colorado School of Mines -- that's MINES, not MIMES. If they were mimes, they wouldn't be yelling from the bench. Anyway, the Mountaineers beat the Orediggers -- yup, Orediggers -- 34-9 while Colorado State-Pueblo beat Colorado Mesa 24-18 in a dual between schools that used to be known as Southern Colorado and Mesa State. Google it. Sixth-ranked Upper Iowa got past scrappy Minnesota State 18-12. Big win to help the Peacocks get past the No. 22 Mavericks was Nick Baumler's win over nationally ranked Matt Blome at 197. Minnesota State's Andrew McFall upset Upper Iowa's Maleek Williams 8-1 at 125. In Division III -- Centenary won its first dual of the year, beating Garden State rival TCNJ -- that's THE College of New Jersey -- 24-15. In case you didn't know, TCNJ used to be known as Trenton State. York -- the one in Pennsylvania -- beat Johns Hopkins and Elizabethtown beat Gettysburg. Episode 357 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast visits with Lehigh alum and wrestling media member Denny Diehl as he shares his memories and stories about the late John Harmon. John J. Harmon, the EIWA's Sports Information Director Emeritus, passed away Tuesday, September 26, 2017. A 1959 graduate of Lehigh University John earned a B.A. in mathematics, is survived by his wife Elaine Oberkotter Harmon and his daughters Debbie and Wendy and their families. John was a computer programmer/systems analyst by profession. Many knew him as the publisher for twenty-four years of the EIWA Newsletter, the clearinghouse of all information regarding the teams of the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association, the nation's oldest wrestling conference. He was the EIWA Sports Information Director for more than two decades. John worked with Greg Strobel, the EIWA's Executive Director, to create the conference's first website which incorporates many of the features of the EIWA Newsletter, which ceased publication in 2014. John co-authored the first and second editions of The History of the EIWA and from 1983-90 was editor of National Mat News. In 2012 he received the Dellinger Award as the nation's top wrestling journalist. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, OK, its NJ Wrestling Hall of Fame chapter and served a decade on the EIWA Hall of Fame Committee. The generosity of John and Elaine to Lehigh was boundless. They were the lead donors for the renovations of Grace Hall that became Leeman-Turner Arena. Typical of the man, he insisted that the arena be named, not after himself, but after Hall of Fame coaches Gerry Leeman and Thad Turner. The Harmons also supported the building of Goodman Stadium, the head wrestling coach and assistant coaches’ endowments, the Michael Caruso Wrestling Complex, and the John J. Harmon '59 Wrestling Scholarship. Elaine assembled thousands of care packages for service members who were deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. His community activities included the Lawrence Township Board of Education, the Mercer County Human Services Advisory Council, the Lawrence Rotary Club, and several New Jersey statewide committees dealing with education. A lifelong railroad enthusiast and investor, Harmon was a member of the National Railroad Historical Society. Craig Sachson and Chas Dorman reunite for the second annual EIWA Championships preview. The two longtime wrestling SIDs at Princeton and Penn break down individual weights, NCAA bids, the team race, and plenty more. You can watch the EIWA Championships live this weekend through FloWrestling, and you can follow Princeton's progress through @tigerwrestling and GoPrincetonTigers.com.
With both the men's hockey and wrestling teams opening big postseason weekends, senior captains on both squads join the latest edition of TigerCast. Hockey standout Ryan Siiro looks at the four-year journey that has culminated in Princeton's first home playoff series since 2013, as well as the run the Tigers have made over the last month. He also looks ahead to the first-round series with Colgate. Afterwards, reigning All-American and EIWA champion Brett Harner talks about how last March has impacted him, why being selfish is the best thing for the team in March, and how special this final run will be with classmates Jordan Laster and Ray O'Donnell. Interviews: Ryan Siiro (5:55); Brett Harner (16:30).
We wrap up the EIWA with part two of the preview. All the interviews in this episode feature coaches from the Ivy League. Our leadoff hitter is the most recent hire first year Head Coach of Columbia Zach Tanelli. Coach Tanelli explains what stood out about Columbia when he applied for the position and his hopes for the future of Lion Wrestling using his hands-on, physical approach. Princeton's Head Coach Chris Ayres is next in line on the podcast and possibly in the standings. The Tigers had their first All-American in 13 years and don't appear to be looking back. Coach Ayres addresses the excitement surrounding the program. Next we speak with the leader of a reinvigorated Brown program, Head Coach Todd Beckerman. He introduces us to his two new assistant coaches and talks about the recent improvements in the Bears recruiting. Now we move to Penn to speak with the Head Coach of the Quakers Alex Tirapelle. Coach Tirapelle explains his coaching roots and the tie-in with academics. Finally, we close with the Dean of Ivy League Coaches Cornell's Rob Koll. As usual, Coach Koll pulls no punches when asked about his schedule, his wrestlers and coaching his son.
Sudden History next preview takes place in the EIWA, the largest conference in the country with 16 teams. We decided that this deserves a giant podcast, so this will be part one in a two part series. This episode will focus on a few of the "non-Ivy League" school in the conference. These will be Bucknell, Army West Point and Lehigh. Bucknell Head Coach Dan Wirnsberger gets it started and he gives us a description of the school's new state-of-the art facility, which he hopes will catapult the school into the top two teams in the EIWA. Wirnsberger has a bit of a chip on his shoulder when it comes to the respect (or lack thereof) that his Bison squad has received nationwide. Listen as he directs his wrestlers to become "the best version of themselves". Next up is Army West Point Head Coach Kevin Ward. Coach Ward gives us an insiders point of view on just how special and even fun their rivalry is with Navy. He is optimistic that his room full of leaders will be able to usher in a new era of wrestling at West Point. Finally, we close with the John Hughes, Associate Head Coach of traditional EIWA power Lehigh. Coach Hughes describes the enviable depth that the Mountain Hawks have at most weight classes this season. He also describes how their top ten recruiting classes attitude differs from most classes of its caliber.
Episode 258 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast visits with Harvard head wrestling coach Jay Weiss. Harvard recently topped the NWCA's All-Academic Top 30 team for the fourth time in the last six years and on this episode, we'll talk about the rigors of wrestling at a quality academic institution like Harvard and the processes that go with it. Weiss is the second-longest tenured coach at Harvard, only behind his wife Jennifer, who is Harvard's women's volleyball coach. Taking the job in his mid-20's, Weiss has coached Harvard to an EIWA championship and crowned numerous All-Americans and a pair of NCAA Division I Champions. Leading a college program after only qualifying for the NCAA Championships once as a senior at Franklin & Marshall isn't the typical Division I coaching avenue. Weiss talks about his time at Franklin & Marshall and his time at Division III Moravian and also at Brown. We'll also go Lancaster style on the Short Time segment. When Nestor Taffur walked off the mat in Oklahoma City after falling to Rutgers' Anthony Perrotti in the Round of 12, he walked off the mat as the very last competitive wrestler in the sport of wrestling for Boston University. The New Jersey native had proposed to his then-girlfriend earlier in the tournament, so it was a spectrum of emotion. As Taffur realized the program he'd given so much to was about to go away, he spent more and more time with his college coach, Carl Adams, and realized he wanted to be a coach. In Episode 107 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, the news is positive for Taffur, who recently joined the coaching staff at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania under head head coach Mike Rogers. It's Taffur's first coaching job and it's at a place he nearly found himself competing for coming out of high school.Taffur talks about his excitement and anticipation to help the Diplomat wrestling program, which recently received a $5 million dollar endowment, preserving the wrestling program at the tiny private Liberal Arts school that's Division III in every other sport (save squash).Taffur also goes into detail on his feelings about the Boston University administration and how it stripped him and his teammate of having a school they could go back to, cheer on and potentially even donate. It's a retrospective about the past and a prospective of the future, chock full of candid responses and sound-off moments.
A native of Tennessee and graduate of Oklahoma State University, Kevin Ward helped take Division II Ouachita Baptist from new program to national power. In 2014, he coached Ouachita Baptist to a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Division II Championships and was named the Division II coach of the year in just the program's fourth year. Now Ward is heading east to take over as the head coach at Army.On Episode 91 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, Kevin Ward answers these questions and more:You're originally from Tennessee, how difficult was it for you to get exposure to the top programs? It's not very often a coach moves from the Division II ranks to the Division I ranks. What are some things you feel make you a guy who can maybe change the culture when it comes to hiring coaches?Ouachita Baptist was your first head coaching job on the college level and you built a program into a force in Division II and you did it without transfers. How much work goes into building a team to win quickly without relying on the quick fix.We had Kerry Regner from Williams Baptist on a recent episode of Short Time (shorttimepodcast.com/68) and he talked about the impact Arkansas businessman Greg Hatcher has had on his program already and they haven't even wrestled their first match. How instrumental was Hatcher in helping get Ouachita Baptist on board to start wrestling?Sometimes finding a job is knowing some of the right people in the right places. For you, that was a bit different, you knew some people, but they weren't necessarily where you think they'd be. Explain your route to Army. There's a lot of proud wrestling history with the Armed Forces, but when it comes to one of the biggest sports rivalries regardless of Sport, Army-Navy ranks near the top. Navy has OWNED the series in wrestling ... and it's not been close. Navy leads the all-time series 48-5-5. Since 2001, Navy's won them all. NCAA titles and All-American finishes are great, but how much are you going to want to beat Navy? What are your thoughts on the NWCA Convention?Follow Army Wrestling and Coach Kevin Ward on Twitter @Army_Wrestling and @CoachKWard
