EPISODE 65 - Clark, Hyung, and John first discuss whether Conn Smythe and Norris Trophy winner Cale Makar (as the MVP of the 2022 NHL playoffs and best defenseman, respectively) of the 2022 Stanley Cup champion team – the Colorado Avalanche – is worth investing in right now. Then also off the top of the episode, they get into what they thought about the recent $2.4M sale of the highly publicized Lebron James Triple Logoman Panini Flawless card (and whether the $2.1M sale of the Lebron James Exquisite Collection rookie patch autograph card numbered to 23 with a BGS 8.5 grade was a better deal). For this week's Hobby Headlines, the guys name some cards or type of cards they are no longer actively buying because of the current sports card bear market (in other words, which sports cards are they taking off their watch list). That includes no longer targeting injured stud players who are expected to come back soon as well as lower grade cards and flagship cards of hot prospects. Then just as in last week's episode, they revisit a segment called "Chasing GOATs" where they compare the highest sale price of some iconic GOAT cards to the last sold price, and talk about if it's a good time to invest in these GOAT players at current prices or if they believe prices could go down even further. The cards discussed include the Stephen Curry Topps Rookie Card (PSA 10); Wayne Gretzky O Pee Chee Rookie Card (PSA 8); Tom Brady Bowman Chrome Base Rookie Card (BGS 9.5); and Derek Jeter SP Foil Rookie Card (BGS 9.5). And they close off the show with the weekly segment, "Pick One" where they put up two cards each and subsequently debate which one they rather invest in. The pairs for this week include: Paul Goldschmidt 2011 Bowman Chrome Rookie Autograph Card (BGS 9.5 True Gem) for $380 vs. Yordan Alvarez 2018 Bowman Chrome Autograph Rookie Card (BGS 9.5 True Gem) for $600; Jayson Tatum vs. Devin Booker; Stephen Curry Topps Chrome Rookie Card /999 (BGS 9) for $7,500 vs. Kevin Durant Topps Chrome Refractor Rookie Card /1499 (PSA 10) for $7,500. On Sunday night, the Colorado Avalanche hoisted the Stanley Cup for the first time in 21 years, and just the third time in team history. And the unanimous winner of the Conn Smythe trophy as playoff MVP was their superstar defenseman, Cale Makar. In fact, Makar was so dominant during the playoffs that The Great One himself, Wayne Gretzky, compared him to the legendary Bobby Orr. Today, The Athletic's Peter Baugh joins us to discuss how Makar went from a 125-pound, baby-faced kid who was often mistaken for someone's little brother to arguably the top defenseman in a generation -- all at age 23. Plus, with Makar's Colorado Avalanche now Stanley Cup champions, are they poised to become a dynasty?Read Peter Baugh's full story about Cale Makar's rise:https://theathletic.com/3374456/2022/06/21/cale-makar-avalanche-brooks-bandits/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The Avalanche beat the Lightning 2-1 in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final behind a goal and an assist from Nathan MacKinnon and the cup clinching goal from Artturi Lehkonen. Tampa Bay fell two victories short of becoming the NHL's first three-peat champion since the early 1980s New York Islanders dynasty. Colorado's core led by MacKinnon, captain Gabriel Landeskog, Mikko Rantanen and longest-tenured player Erik Johnson finally got the job done after years of playoff disappointments. Game One of the 2022 Stanley Cup Final delivered on every bit of promise we all hoped it would. A dominant performance by the Colorado Avalanche still wasn't enough to keep the reigning champion Tampa Bay Lightning on the ground, as the game needed to be decided in overtime. Who wins the series? Kinda feels like we all do. Bruce Cassidy has been snapped up just over a week after the Boston Bruins fired him, he'll step onto the bench for the Vegas Golden Knights, looking to replicate the effect he had on the Bruins. Is John Tortorella a good fit for the Philadelphia Flyers? No matter what you may think, it looks like it's happening. Who are the leaders for the Conn Smythe this year? Can a non-star player sneak in and win the trophy? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. It appears that the Toronto Maple Leafs haven't completely closed the door on signing Jack Campbell. Mike DiStefano and David Morassutti discuss the latest on the pending free agent but first give their thoughts on Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final (0:00). They look at how the Tampa Bay Lightning and Colorado Avalanche did not disappoint with their performance especially the pace of play (1:41). Mike and Dave look at why the Avalanche were fortunate to come away with the win given that Andrei Vasilevskiy didn't have his best effort (4:23). They discuss how the Lightning still managed to give themselves a chance to win Game 1 despite not playing their best game and how Nikita Kucherov got them going with his amazing goal (6:10). They also give their thoughts on how Brayden Point played in Game 1 in his return from injury and why the Avalanche need to be worried once he gets himself back on track (9:12). Mike asks Dave if he feels any different about picking the Avalanche to win the series or if he is still confident that they can win the series (10:15). Mike and Dave look into the latest news surrounding Jack Campbell and that his agent coming out and saying that there is still dialogue with the Leafs (15:11). Despite Campbell's camp saying that there are still discussions happening, Mike and Dave question how there hasn't been any concrete numbers in terms of term and salary being thrown around if they've been talking for so long (17:30). They also wonder if Campbell is still planning to look at what the free-agent market is offering (21:00). To end the show, Mike and Dave play Co-Sign/No-Sign look at whether Artturi Lehkonen is in the conversation for the Conn Smythe trophy odds? Will John Tortorella be the right fit if he joins the Philadelphia Flyers as their next head coach (27:12)? Is Barry Trotz destined for Detroit (30:37)?
