E163: Victoria Callier Recent Graduate of UNLV School of Law and a Rhetoric Moot Court Madness Semi Finalist!

This episode with Victoria Callier is a great one to close out a guest's law school chapter on. Victoria is a recent graduate of UNLV School of Law and a semi-finalist for Rhetoric's Moot Court Madness competition. Victoria takes us down her journey, from being a kid in Las Vegas who would pick an animal of the week and force her parents to sit through a full persuasive presentation on why it was the best one, to studying English at SMU, to coming back home to UNLV and heading off to clerk for the Nevada Supreme Court in Reno right after the bar. What I appreciated most about this conversation is Victoria's honesty. She did not love 1L, and she says so plainly. She went into her first semester treating everyone as competition before a study group completely turned her mental well-being around. She also walked into law school set on immigration and asylum work, then realized through her internships that she did not have the emotional bandwidth for it, and was self-aware enough to pivot toward the corporate research and writing she actually loves. Oh, and somewhere in the middle of all of that, she was Miss Nevada and runs a mental health nonprofit she started back in high school called More Than You Think.Victoria also gets into Moot Court Madness and how the AI feedback from her first run, which she was handing over information without actually persuading anyone, reshaped the way she reads cases and builds arguments. Her closing advice is simple, but it stuck with me: find what you love about the law and hold onto it, because that “why” is what carries you through the moments you want to quit.A genuinely fun and honest conversation, and a fitting send-off as Victoria heads into her clerkship.Victoria's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/victoriacallierBe sure to check out the Official Sponsors for the Lawyers in the Making Podcast:Rhetoric - Empowers your teaching and training with AI that strengthens learning, protects integrity, and proves authentic understanding, for students and professionals alike, with CICERO. I am absolutely thrilled to announce a powerhouse collaboration of storytelling and stagecraft! The incredibly talented Atlanta Playwright Jacob York stopped by The Ash Said It Show for an exclusive, deep-dive conversation about his highly anticipated world premiere of INITIATIVE. This isn't just a play; it's a groundbreaking theatrical event opening at the end of this month at the prestigious Aurora Theatre in Lawrenceville, GA. Running from March 26 through April 19, 2026, this production is already the talk of the Atlanta arts community, and I cannot wait for you to hear the heart and soul behind this script. Directed by the visionary Katie Erin Chambers, Initiative is a brilliant exploration of friendship, legacy, and the power of imagination. The story follows a tight-knit group of friends who gather around a gaming table for one final, epic campaign—one that beautifully transcends the boundaries of fantasy and reality. As the character Dave battles an aggressive illness, he turns to the legendary world of Dungeons & Dragons to manufacture the milestones he fears he'll never reach. With every roll of the d20, his companions craft a quest that encompasses a lifetime of memories, from the profound responsibilities of fatherhood to the simple wonder of seeing the ocean for the first time. This play is the ultimate "crit hit" for theater lovers and tabletop gamers alike. It delivers the perfect combination of unapologetic nerdiness, deep-seated pathos, and genuine joy. Audiences can expect a rollercoaster of emotions—complete with thrilling sword fights, menacing orcs, and those heavy moments of existential dread that make us human. It is a testament to how we use play and community to navigate the hardest parts of our lives. Whether you are a seasoned Paladin or have never touched a character sheet, York's writing ensures that the human element is front and center. I'm diving into the creative process with Jacob to discuss how he balanced the mechanics of RPG gaming with such a high-stakes emotional narrative. This is the must-see world premiere of the season, and you'll want to hear every detail right here before the curtain rises at the Aurora Theatre.

We have our semi-finalists as the last episodes of the drama series that is the Super8 stage concluded with a double feature overnight as South Africa put away Zimbabwe and India got home in their game against the West Indies. The India x West Indies was a virtual quarter-final decided by one man as Sanju Samson played the innings of a lifetime to anchor India in chasing down 199 in the final over. In a game that hung in the balance for so long a few key moments here and there proved the difference as Baldy and Raj broke down terrific batting performances by both sides. In an interesting aside Baldy and Raj break down the balance of the Indian side going forward as Axar went unused with the bat and only five bowlers were used. Is there another gear that India can go to with a tweak to their lineup? For the West Indies this concludes a terrific tournament for them - they've come oh so close to a semi-final berth but it is India that is through to the semis against England. We also recap the South Africa x Zimbabwe encounter. South Africa made several changes all of which seemed to pay off against Zimbabwe as Maphaka and Nortje made telling inroads with the ball early. Sikanda Raza did everything to keep Zimbabwe hopes alive but South Africa proved too strong with too many options in the end. Looking ahead to the semi-finals. What needs to go right for New Zealand to get ahead of South Africa? Baldy seems to think that Phillips will have something to say. The showdown at the top of the order between Seifert and Allen versus the length bowling of Ngidi and Rabada looms as a key moment. For India and England, which superstars from either side will step up in what promises to be an enticing affair? Will we see the best of Buttler and Abishek who have been quiet all tournament? A packed Thanksgiving-week show that went completely off the rails in the best way possible. We kick things off with festive backgrounds, beers in hand, and the usual chaos before diving into Ohio high school athletes officially being allowed to cash in on NIL money. From there, it's Brinner talk, Tulane highlights (way too many of them), and the insane story out of UAB where a player was charged with attempted murder after stabbing two teammates. We wander into a Zaxby's tangent, break down Rice bribing students with free beer, and dig into LSU reportedly dangling $90 million and a massive NIL budget at Lane Kiffin. We touch on the Michigan–Big Ten mess, then question why Kevin Stefanski punted from the Raiders' 29-yard line like he was trying to protect the under. Ohio governor Mike DeWine regrets legalizing sports betting, Colorado looks rough, and the NFL Hall of Fame semifinalists are out. Then Jay Paterno jumps into the Speakeasy and we get into everything: James Franklin getting canned, where Penn State actually ranks as a job, how NIL changed the sport, the transfer portal chaos, whether collective bargaining is coming, how we got here with paying players, and how much coaches' salaries warped the whole system. Jay talks coaching vs writing, which teams he couldn't stand, whether politics is actually worse, and runs through the Quick Hitters before wrapping up the interview. We close with ScottSki45's stat of the week on Griffey Jr. and Stan Musial, the upcoming Stuart Scott 30 for 30, Shohei committing to Japan for the WBC, beer recaps, and Sip/Chug/Drainpour with Thanksgiving traditions. This week on the podcast, the voices of two semi-finalists for Overdrive's 2025 Small Fleet Champ award: First, Robbie and Levi Turnage of Mississippi-headquartered tanker fleet Turnage and Sons, LLC. They're respectively fourth- and fifth-generation milk haulers who've made good on a business with a stable of dairymen in the region specializing in organic milk over two decades of so Robbie's grown the fleet from just a single truck, following in the footsteps his father, grandfather and great grandfather before him -- the hands-on nature of each successive generation's training and involvement in the shop, behind the wheel, and everything else that goes along with running a trucking business have no doubt contributed to the family business' longevity, with 19-year-old Levi now fully entrenched as well. In the podcast, you'll hear the Turnages in conversation with Overdrive's own Long Haul Paul Marhoefer in the cab of Levi's 2005 Peterbilt 379 "Big Red" parked up in March at the Mid-America Trucking Show. Marhoefer wrote about the pair in a story published in July you can read here: https://www.overdriveonline.com/overdrive-extra/article/15751311/five-generations-trucking-the-turnage-familys-longevity-secret Catch some pictures there of Big Red, too, which placed second in its class at the MATS show. Stay tuned for more reporting on the Small Fleet Champ contender in the coming weeks. Also in the podcast, fellow semi-finalist MRL Transport owner Mark Ledford, who founded and grew Red Baron Transportation to 35 trucks over 15 years starting in the early part of the decade before selling out and restarting with just one truck in 2019 as MRL. That story aired just last week at https://www.overdriveonline.com/small-fleet-champ/article/15753736/mark-ledfords-mrl-transport-master-class-in-trucking-rightsizing He's up to five trucks now, with four drivers employed, and similarly gets his hands dirty behind the wheel himself, a fact key to both maintaining customer relationships spanning back decades now but also inking new business, as he tells in the podcast. Here, he takes even farther back to his origins in trucking working a dock in the 1980s, then his first OTR driving experience with a team operation. On his first run from North Carolina out to California his co-driver woke him up by turning the rig on its side in the middle of the night, memorably leaving Mark to climb out of a window and onto the cab's side, now upright, unable to find his glasses to sharpen the blurry lights all around him. Needless to say, as he notes in the podcast, he never would run team again. Meet all Overdrive's 2025 Small Fleet Champ semi-finalists and read more about them through this month via https://overdriveonline.com/small-fleet-champ Two Champs will be honored along with two fellow semi-finalists at Championship sponsor NASTC's annual conference October 23-25 in Nashville. EPISODE 513 - M.T. Solomon - Women's SciFi Fantasy, Liar Queen, Setting Down Past TraumaAboutBorn in the American South and raised in the remote wilderness of Alaska, M.T. Solomon has been writing books since she was six years old. At the age of eleven she wrote and hand-stitched the binding to her own story: a riff of Calvin and Hobbes with a female protagonist. She graduated from Portland State University in 2012 with a B.S. in Liberal Studies and a Minor in Writing. Her work has appeared on the cover of Gotham Writers Class Schedule and has been featured on The Spinning Pen, and Wow! Women on Writing. Solomon's writing takes cues from her childhood, where the vast setting of Alaska seemed just as much a character in her life story as she did. She favors broken or imperfect characters and utilizes a lyrical, repetitive style within her prose. Her work is heavily influenced by the female authors she grew up loving: Margaret Atwood, Lois Lowry, and Alice Hoffman.Winner of Gotham Writers #storieseverywhere for July 2016.Story as Cover Art for Gotham Writers Winter Class Schedule 2016-2017Contributor on Ad Hoc Fiction.Short Story Winner on The Spinning Pen (December 2016).Dual POV Prompt Flash Fiction Contributor on The Spinning Pen (March 2017).Guest Writer on The Spinning Pen (February 2017 & March 2017).Runner Up for Wow!
