Ellen Keane catches up with Mags Cremen fresh from winning gold alongside Fintan McCarthy in the Mixed Double Sculls at the recent World Rowing Championships.
Let us know what's on your mindA new boat, a fresh medal, and a partnership built on trust, this conversation dives straight into how Fintan McCarthy and Philip Doyle are reinventing Irish rowing momentum on the road to LA. We pull back the curtain on their whirlwind post-Paris year: Philip navigating shifts in the emergency department before rediscovering his competitive fire, Fintan shifting from lightweight to heavyweight without chasing “dead weight,” and the two of them finding speed after only a handful of rows together. The Shanghai story is bigger than a bronze. Fintan and Mags Cremen snatched a world title in the mixed double with a one-spin warm-up, proving that shared technique and fearless execution can trump rehearsal. Then comes the moment that hits hardest: Jake McCarthy's breakthrough podium in the single, a long-awaited result that Fintan counts among his proudest career highlights. It's high performance shaped by real life—family, grief, and the choice to let emotion sharpen, not shake, the blade. If you're curious about how elite teams actually build speed—through honest conversations, evidence-led training, and hard-earned trust—you'll feel right at home here. PAUL O'Donovan might have chosen to take some time off after winning his third Olympic – and second gold – medal in Paris during the summer. He would have been well within his rights to rest, recover and let everything sink in.Instead, he travelled to Canada just a couple of weeks later and won his seventh World Rowing title. He also started working as a doctor in the interim. His recent achievements, along with his European and national titles got us thinking, at Star Sport HQ, is Paul O'Donovan the greatest Irish sportsperson of all time? There are plenty of contenders to the title: Roy Keane, Katie Taylor, Henry Shefflin to name but a few.O'Donovan has dominated a sport like no other Irish person has, and has raised the profile of a sport in a way perhaps only Katie Taylor can match. We're obviously biased down here in West Cork, but spoke about why he just might be Ireland's greatest sportsperson of all time on this week's podcast. All this and more on this week's Star Sport Podcast. In today's Podcast, we are back on the Road to Paris, to the Olympic and Paralympic Games with our partners and sponsors of Team Ireland, Permanent TSB.An Olympic Gold Medal is about as rare a commodity as you will find in sport. In fact, there are only four living Irishmen that have one in their possession so it is special to chat today with one of them, Fintan McCarthy, who brought the nation to their feet in Tokyo and is hoping to do so again in Paris.Along the way, he is a three-time world champion but our conversation isn't all about the boat.We chat inevitably about his partner Paul O'Donovan and what they talk about off the water, about where he keeps his medal, about what might be next and about the memento he likes to take from his races, even if the Marshalls would rather he didn't.He is as engaging a personality as you would imagine from seeing him on the telly so let's head to West Cork and get the conversation started.Next up on the Podcast is a chat with Ireland Football star Stephenie Roche, looking back on that goal, ahead to the next phase for Women's football in Ireland and plenty more. You can subscribe to this podcast which drops every Tuesday and Thursday across a wide range of sporting areas on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts from.
