Joining me is a two-time gold medal Olympian who played a big part in Team Ireland's record performance at this summer's Paris Olympics. It gives me real joy to welcome Fintan McCarthy, Irish lightweight rower and double Olympic gold medalist…

PAUL O'Donovan might have chosen to take some time off after winning his third Olympic – and second gold – medal in Paris during the summer. He would have been well within his rights to rest, recover and let everything sink in.Instead, he travelled to Canada just a couple of weeks later and won his seventh World Rowing title. He also started working as a doctor in the interim. His recent achievements, along with his European and national titles got us thinking, at Star Sport HQ, is Paul O'Donovan the greatest Irish sportsperson of all time? There are plenty of contenders to the title: Roy Keane, Katie Taylor, Henry Shefflin to name but a few.O'Donovan has dominated a sport like no other Irish person has, and has raised the profile of a sport in a way perhaps only Katie Taylor can match. We're obviously biased down here in West Cork, but spoke about why he just might be Ireland's greatest sportsperson of all time on this week's podcast. All this and more on this week's Star Sport Podcast. In today's Podcast, we are back on the Road to Paris, to the Olympic and Paralympic Games with our partners and sponsors of Team Ireland, Permanent TSB.An Olympic Gold Medal is about as rare a commodity as you will find in sport. Tá bonn óir Oilimpeach buaite ag Kellie Harrington na hÉireann i gcró na dornálaíochta sna cluichí Oilimpeacha. Fuair Harrington an ceann is fearr ar Beatriz Ferreira as an mBrasaíl sa gcomhrac ceannais 60kg i dTóiceó Dé Domhnaigh. Tá Harrington ar an tríú dornálaí as Éirinn a chroch bonn óir abhaile ó na Cluichí Oilimpeacha, chomh maith le Katie Taylor i 2012 agus Michael Carruth i 1992. Is as Baile Átha Cliath í Harrington agus oibríonn sí mar ghlantóir go páirt-aimseartha in Ospidéal Ollscoile Naomh Uinseann. Bhuaigh Foireann na hÉireann ceithre bhonn ag na Cluichí. Tá bonn cré-umha ag an dornálaí eile Aidan Walsh, bonn óir ag na rámhaithe Fintan McCarthy agus Paul O'Donovan agus ceithre bhonn cré-umha ag foireann rámhaíochta na mban. Beidh an cainéal teilifíse TVG nó Television de Galicia sa Spáinn ag craoladh cluiche leathcheannais na hÉireann, toisc go bhfuil suim an phobail sna cluichí Gaelacha ag méadú sa cheantar. Déanfaidh RTÉ na craoltaí a chur le chéile in Éirinn mar is gnách, ach le tráchtaireacht Ghailísise, an chéad uair a chraolfar na cluichí i dteanga eile seachas Béarla agus Gaeilge. Tá deich gclub peile Gaelaí sa Ghailís faoi láthair agus iad ag dul ó neart go neart. Beidh Maigh Eo ag dul i ngleic le Baile Átha Cliath sa chéad chluiche leathcheannais Dé Sathairn, ach cuireadh an cluiche eile, idir Ciarraí agus Tír Eoghain, siar seachtain de bharr ráig Covid-19 i bhfoireann Thír Eoghain, agus tá seans ann go mbeidh ar sheaimpíní Chraobh Uladh éirí as an gcomórtas go hiomlán. Fógraíodh go mbeidh sraith ceolchoirmeacha ar siúl i nGaillimh níos deireanaí an mhí seo, an chéad mhór-ócáid siamsaíochta in iarthar na tíre ó chuir paindéim Covid-19 deireadh le hócáidí poiblí. Beidh Christy Moore, Mary Coughlan agus The Stunning ag casadh ag sraith ceolchoirmeacha i Staid an Phiarsaigh, chomh maith le dreasa grinn ó na fuirseoirí Ardal O'Hanlon agus Deirdre O'Kane. Beidh cead ag slua suas le cúig chéad duine freastal ar na hócáidí sa staid go sábháilte agus dhá chéad duine in ionaid eile sa chathair. D'eagraigh an Róisín Dubh agus Féile Ghrinn na Gaillimhe an tsraith agus beidh na hócáidí ar siúl idir Déardaoin, an 26 Lúnasa, agus Dé Domhnaigh, an 29 Lúnasa. * Léirithe ag Conradh na Gaeilge i Londain. Nuacht Mhall. Príomhscéalta na seachtaine, léite go mall. * Inniu an seachtú lá de mhí Lúnasa. Is mise Oisín Mac Conamhna. Tá na Cluichí Olimpeacha ar siúl i Tokyo fós, agus tá toradh an-maith bainte amach ag foireann na hÉireann. Tá bonn óir agus dhá bhonn cré-umha buaite acu, agus beidh Kellie Harrington ag iarraidh bonn óir a fháil i dtroid ceannais éadrom-mheáchan na mban amárach. Bhuaigh na rámhálaithe Paul O'Donovan agus Fintan McCarthy ón Sciobairín an bonn óir sa chomórtas céasairlí beirte éadrom-mheáchan. Faraor, bhí ar an dornálaí Aidan Walsh éirí as an troid leath-cheannais ina roinn, mar ghortaigh sé é fhéin ag léim le háthas tar éis dó an bonn cré-umha a bhuachaint. Agus bhí sár-iarracht phearsanta mhór i dteocht de thríocha naoi céim ag Eilish Flanagan i léimrás trí mhíle méadar na mban. Bhí éifeachtaí an athraithe aeráide le feiscint an tseachtain seo in oirthear na Meánmhara, le dóiteáin mhóra trasna na Gréige agus na Tuirce, cúpla seachtain tar éis na tine foraoise ba mhó i stair na Cipire. jQuery(document).ready(function(){ cab.clickify(); }); Original Podcast with clickable words https://tinyurl.com/yfd52aab Tokyo 2020: Gold medal won by Paul O'Donovan, Fintan McCarthy. Tóiceo 2020: Bonn óir buaite ag Paul O'Donovan, Fintan McCarthy. Irish rowers Paul O'Donovan and Fintan McCarthy have won an Olympic gold medal in the doubles paddling tournament in Tokyo. Tá bonn óir Oilimpeach buaite ag rámhaithe na hÉireann Paul O'Donovan agus Fintan McCarthy sa chomórtas céaslaire beirte i dTóiceo. Although the Cork duo were the popular choice before the race, they did not hold fast to the gold medal, and the German team stretched to the finish. Cé gur rogha na coitiantachta a bhí sa dís Chorcaíoch roimh an rás ní raibh daingean acu leis an mbonn óir, agus bhí foireann na Gearmáine sínte leo go dtí an deireadh. The Italians came in third. Is iad na hIodálaigh a tháinig sa tríú háit. It took the two men from Skibbereen six minutes, six seconds to finish the race. Sé nóiméad, sé shoicind a thóg sé ar an mbeirt fhear as an Sciobairín an rás a chríochnú. That's 0.86 seconds ahead of the Germans, a little over halfway. Sin 0.86 soicind chun cinn ar na Gearmánaigh, beagán níos mó ná leathfhad. This is the second medal the Irish rowers have won at the Olympic Games in Tokyo to date after the women's team won a bronze medal in the quarter-finals last night. Seo an dara bonn atá buaite ag rámhaithe na hÉireann ag na Cluichí Oilimpeacha i dTóiceo go dtí seo tar éis d'fhoireann na mban bonn cré-umha a bhuachan i gcraobh na gceathrar arú aréir. Speaking to RTÉ after the race, Paul O'Donovan stated that the duo followed the normal course of business during the race. Ag labhairt dó le RTÉ i ndiaidh an ráis, thug Paul O'Donovan le fios gur chloígh an dís leis an modh oibre a bhíonn acu de ghnáth le linn an ráis. He said they expected fierce competition from German and Italian rowers but always had confidence in themselves. Dúirt sé go raibh siad ag súil le géariomaíocht ó iomróirí na Gearmáine agus na hIodáile ach go raibh muinín acu astu féin i gcónaí. Irish President Michael D Higgins congratulated Paul O'Donovan and Fintan McCarthy. Rinne Uachtarán na hÉireann Michael D Higgins comhghairdeachas le Paul O'Donovan agus Fintan McCarthy. He said he was a great hero and that his achievements give courage to young athletes in Ireland. Dúirt sé gur sárghaisce a bhí ann agus go dtugann a bhfuil baint amach acu, go dtugann sé misneach do lúthchleasaithe óga in Éirinn.

You’d know the Tokyo Olympics are just around the corner because for the second week in a row, rowing is the central focus of this week’s podcast. Skibbereen duo Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy have continued their dominance of the lightweight men’s double sculls after another gold-winning performance on Sunday morning at World Rowing Cup II in Lucerne. Fellow Skibbereen rower Lydia Heaphy also medalled in Switzerland, winning a superb silver in the lightweight women’s single sculls A final on Saturday afternoon. On today’s show we’ll reflect on the club’s continued success with Olympic gold-medal winning rower Martin Cross. Cross, who won gold at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles alongside Steve Redgrave, is also a well-respected rowing commentator, journalist and author. We’re also going to touch base with Ballineen sprinter Joan Healy. The 60m specialist has been ruled out of the Olympics through injury but thankfully the achilles damage isn’t as bad as originally feared. But before all that, Ronan McCarthy’s Cork footballers picked up their first win of the year on Saturday evening with a convincing 2-12 to 10 points win over Laois in Portlaoise and Kieran was at the game for The Southern Star. You can add the Star Sport Podcast to your podcast player of choice by copying this URL - https://southern-star.podomatic.com/rss2.xml - and using the "Add a podcast by URL/RSS" option.
It’s a rowing special on this week’s show as we reflect on yet more remarkable performances from Skibbereen rowers on the international stage. On Sunday afternoon in Varese Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy added the 2021 European title to their 2019 World crown. The Skibbereen duo raced to gold in the A final of the lightweight men’s double at the European Championships and on today’s podcast we chat to 2016 Rio Olympian Clare Lambe about their performances. Fellow Skibbereen rower Emily Hegarty won a silver medal. The Aughadown woman is part of the Irish women’s four that finished second to The Netherlands and we’ll speak to Emily a little later on today’s show.

Former Ireland international Fiona Hayes talks us through the big Six Nations win over Wales. Cork City goalkeeper Mark McNulty on City's start to the season, and the Focus Ireland Big Rebel Sleep Out. And we talk to a young Corkman, Flobater Fares who's planning to run from Cork to Galway for the Irish Cancer Society, and his brother Abanoub on helping Flobetar prepare for the 200km trek.
It’s a Celtic Ross Hotel West Cork Sports Star Awards special this week on the show. We hear from the Ballineen Bullet Phil Healy who on Sunday evening became only the 4th athlete in the history of the awards to claim the title of West Cork Sports Star of the Year for a second time. Phil answers some listeners' questions. We also chat to Christine O’Neill of Courcey Rovers. The county senior camogie champions were named the winner of the 2020 Special Achievement Award at the annual ceremony which was streamed live on Sunday evening. Later in the week we’ll have a separate podcast with the West Cork Ladies footballers who were crowned team of the year and speaking to captain Aine Terry O’Sullivan, Siobhan Courtney and Martina O’Brien so keep an eye out for that one. Jack and Kieran also chat about the news that Fintan McCarthy will partner Paul O’Donovan in the Irish men’s lightweight double at the upcoming European Rowing Championships.
On today’s show, we’re catching up with Skibbereen rowing sensations Jake & Fintan McCarthy World champion Fintan and twin brother Jake, a world rowing finalist in his own right, both had their sights set on securing a seat in the Irish lightweight double at last year’s Tokyo Olympics before the pandemic put those ambitions on hold. Both brothers now have the rescheduled games firmly in their sights and they caught up with Kieran to chat about their plans for the year, injuries and The Sopranos. Later in the week we’ll be releasing another podcast which will be a special tribute episode to the late great Eamonn Ryan who sadly passed away last week. We’ll be joined by Cork legends Rena Buckely and Nollaig Cleary to remember the great man so keep an eye out for that one on Wednesday.
Episode Five is full of world champions! First of all, host Niamh Hayes chats to Fintan McCarthy, who alongside Paul O'Donovan, won the lightweight mens double sculls at last year's World Rowing Championships. Fintan talks about how he got into the sport, what it was like winning the world champs and how he is targeting Tokyo 2021. This is followed by the person who became Ireland's very first world rowing champion back in 1991 - Niall O'Toole. Niall chats about becoming the country's first full-time rower, how he structured his training at a time when there was nobody to gauge off, and he has some helpful advice for athletes who have another year to go until the Olympics.
