In Leaders Getting Coffee episode 35, our guest is Olympic High Jump champion, Hamish Kerr. He describes himself as too tall for a runner. So it was just as well that a young Hamish Kerr scuttled down to the High Jump enclosure after his 800 metre race ended. There he found a natural ability and reduced competition; a combination that saw him develop a passion for this highly technical event at a remarkably young age. Hamish Kerr’s is the classic Kiwi story. After winning the NZ Secondary Schools title for Auckland Grammar School, he headed off to Massey University and forgot about athletics for a couple of years. But the passion still burned, and an opportunity to attend the World University Games rekindled a love affair with the sport through which he would become a world an Olympic champion. With his degree completed, he moved to Christchurch to follow the coaching and worked part time in a hardware store while he worked on the physical and mental techniques that would make him successful. On the Leaders Getting Coffee podcast, Bruce Cotterill talks to Hamish about his gradual journey to the top of the Olympic podium, a journey that now includes Commonwealth Games and World Indoor titles alongside his Olympic triumph. And he takes us step by step through that agonising Olympic qualifying session which saw him almost leave the competition prematurely, and a finals day filled with the drama that can only be delivered by an energy sapping one on one jump off for the gold medal. And he’s not finished yet. Hamish Kerr has an aspirational message for our future leaders and an agenda that will see him attempt to defend his title in Los Angeles in 2028.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today, we bring you the man who founded the global phenomenon HYROX. Mo is a double Olympic Gold Medallist in hockey, having won with Germany in Beijing and London. Described to me by someone who knows far more about the sport as ‘The Cristiano Ronaldo' of field hockey, we were pretty excited to get both a sporting icon and high flying entrepreneur in the studio; always what we strive for on the Business of Sport! Since it was founded in 2017, HYROX has become a major player in sporting participation. Consisting of both running and 8 separate ‘fitness' activities to form a unique race format, millions of people have participated in their events around the world. The success has been so impressive that they have now had to implement a ballot in some cities (including London where they had over 70,000 applications) to manage demand. But this isn't just a series of fitness events; this is a sport, the driving values of which lie in community and engagement. I can't deny, when we got into it, the business was pretty insane too. This has been the most requested show over the last 3 months. It was a lot of fun entering a completely new area for the show. This is one incredible sports asset that is only going to get bigger. We're delighted to welcome Mo to the Business of Sport. What is HYROX?: “52% of people call fitness their sport, but what is the sport”? What was the opportunity moment that led to Mo and Christian embarking on their HYROX journey? A breakdown of what an event actually consists of; from running to sled pushes to rowing. How they have taken HYROX from a 650 person event in Hamburg in 2017 to 650,000 signed up global participants this year across 85 events. Can anyone participate in HYROX? Who is the target audience? How did Mo's experience as an athlete prepare him for life as an entrepreneur? Creating Community: “You cannot reduce this down to the business model”: how Moritz created one of the most engaged fitness communities in the world. Why does he think this has resonated with so many people and what do they attribute the success of HYROX to so far? What does it mean to build community? Lots of people talk about it but very few are able to achieve and then maintain it. Why is it so important to build out both the professional end and the mass participation front? The Business of HYROX: From a near $100m in sign-ups this year to selling media packages to the majority of participants, how do you build on the HYROX hype without exploiting the loyalty of the people who helped build it?  The importance of relationships with global brands like PUMA and Red Bull; the commercial model that powers the brands. How an affiliate model with gyms will power the development of the sport and allow people to train specifically for events. Which events have HYROX licensed and which ones do they keep in-house; the logistics of operating a global series. I'm delighted to speak with Duff Gibson this week. Duff has spent the better part of three decades in a hotbed of Olympic sport.  As an athlete, Duff was a provincial champion speed skater, a national champion and national team member in bobsleigh, and then a world and Olympic gold medallist in the sport of skeleton. As a coach he led six different athletes to podium finishes at a world level. Competing against, working with, and learning from numerous world-leading athletes and coaches has provided Duff a breadth and depth of experience.  Duff's belief is that, despite its mischaracterisation in popular culture, the mental side of sport is perhaps the most significant aspect, and what very often makes the difference between success and failure, in particular at the highest level.   In his fantastic book ‘The Tao of Sport' Duff explores the commonality amongst elite performers relating to purpose, passion, and growth, as a means to achieving high performance, or as a means to an end in itself. The book is an inspiring and informative read for athletes and coaches of any level, as well as parents, teachers, and anyone helping others to become the best version of themselves. Duff is also the founder of TheTaoOfSport.com which offers athletes and coaches courses on the mental side of sport.

Arguably New Zealand's greatest ever Olympian, Dame Lisa Carrington is the best in the canoe sprint game.  She's brought home a staggering total of nine medals across four Olympic Games, eight of them gold, and one bronze, dominating the water.  Despite her massive success, Carrington doesn't believe this is the best she's capable of, telling Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking that you have to be able to look beyond the finish line or gold medal and set yourself other goals.  “If I thought that winning a gold medal was my best, I would've stopped in London. I would've stopped after Rio, I would've stopped after Tokyo.”  Carrington has been competing for over a decade now, but it's taken her up until this year's Games to have 100% joy and satisfaction in racing.  “I think a lot of the time I've raced in the past, and it's been out of just needing to win, just because that's the expectation on me,” she told Hosking.  “But for Paris, I've managed to get to a place where I was like, you know what, I'm just gonna do my best.”  And doing her best panned out, with Carrington netting a total of three gold medals in the 2024 Games.  Photo / Jason Oxenham There comes a point in every successful athlete's career where the question on everyone's mind is: what's next?   Carrington is currently at the top of her game and has no plans on stopping here, but when it comes to the next steps, she's unsure whether she wants to leave while on top or not.   “Being in the position I am, you know, being the fastest I've ever been, strongest, whatever, it is hard to think ‘Oh maybe I'll stop now,'” Carrington said.  “Because well, what else is there?”   Every competition is different, each Olympic Games different again from the last, and when it comes to the next steps, Carrington thinks it would need to be a different challenge once more.  And when it comes to new and different challenges, Carrington has fulfilled a goal she's had since Tokyo: writing a children's book.  Lisa Carrington Chases a Champion is aimed at 4-9 year olds, and details the journey of eight year old Lisa having a goal, the journey of achieving it, and the challenges along the way.  “There's so many little messages in there from, you know, about... a little bit about discipline or having a plan, but also that, you know, there are challenges, and you have to keep turning up.”  It's the first of what Carrington hopes to be a series, with her leaving the ending open for another journey.  “Too many lessons to learn and relearn.”  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

One week out from the 2024 Paris Olympics, the excitement and pressure is beginning to build.   There's one person who knows those pressures well, having represented New Zealand in five Olympic Games.  Dame Valerie Adams is one of the country's most well-known athletes, a two-time Olympic gold medallist, four-time World Champion, four-time World Indoor Champion, and three-time Commonwealth Games Champion, who was virtually undefeated in shot-put.  Although she's no longer competing, Adams is going along to this year's games as a member of the World Athletics Council, and she told Newstalk ZB's Jack Tame that her preparations have been a little bit different.  “I think the stress levels are a bit different,” Adams said.  The types of stress are also different, Adams revealed, as competing has you training “pretty much at the cliff edge”, whereas in her current role, her stresses are caused by more mundane things like travel and preparing council meetings.   There's plenty of sports on offer this year, and Adams is looking forward to the intensity of basketball and the novelty of gymnastics.  “And obviously, following the New Zealand crew,” Adams told Tame.  New Zealand is sending 195 athletes to compete in the Games across a total of 23 sports.  The Athletics team is 15-strong with “heaps of potential”, as Adams puts it, but they're also facing quite a lot of pressure.  “We've had a good history of bringing back medals at every Olympic Games since I competed, apart from Athens. So there is a lot of pressure on there, but so much potential.”  “I hope spectators and viewers, especially us Kiwis back here supporting, remember and know and realise that everybody out there competing for our country is doing their ultimate best,” she told Tame.  “Whatever the results will be, will be, and just be a bit kinder with any comments or remarks that you might want to make.”   Having competed in so many high-profile events, Adams knows what it's like to be cast into the spotlight and faced with New Zealand's infamous ‘tall poppy syndrome'.  “I know what it's like to perform well and succeed, and I also know what it's like to underperform and actually get ridiculed and abused for it, and then win the gold medal seven days later, and then I was a national hero.”  “It's not a good place to be.”  Although being at the Games is set to stir up some nostalgia, Adams is quite sure that five was enough, and being able to make a change in her capacity as a World Athletics Council member is special as well.  “You know, if you want to make change, you've got to be at the table, not serving coffee to people at the table.”  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Above all, Kirsten is a staunch supporter of OTTBs and reveals her favorite thing about the breed.Check out ottbontap.com for One Sly Fox's pedigree, photos, and more!--#ottb #offtrackthoroughbred #ottbpodcast #ottbontap #ottbmakeover #womenpodcasters #horsepodcast #podcastepisode #ottbtransformation #ottbsoftiktok #ottbsofinstagram #eventing #ottbeventer #oneslyfox #schuitemaequestrian #ottbeventer #stubben #arrohelmets #streamhorsetv #impulsionmedia

Period tracker apps claim to help you to predict when you might start your period and calculate the best time to attempt to conceive. The Information Commissioner's Office has said that a third of women have used one. A report out this week, however, has raised serious questions about the way in which this data is used. The study, by Kings College London and University College London, examined the privacy policies and data safety labels of 20 of the most popular of these kind of apps. The authors say it is the most extensive evaluation of its kind completed to date. Anita discusses with BBC Technology Reporter Shiona McCallum and the lead author of the study Dr Ruba Abu-Salma from Kings College London. After going viral on social media earlier this year, new bar La Camionera is planning to open a permanent inclusive venue for “lesbians and their friends”. Reporter Martha Owen has been following as they prepare to open and hears why these spaces are important from DJ Yvonne Taylor, event organisers Jess Whiting Boult and Tabs Benjamin, and poet Joelle Taylor. And Anita Rani is joined by filmmakers Erica Rose and Elina Street, creators of The Lesbian Bar Project, to discuss their award-winning series about lesbian bars in the USA and Germany.                                                                                                                               Director Amanda Nell Eu discusses her award-winning debut feature film, Tiger Stripes. An imaginative coming-of-age story about a girl who transforms into a jungle cat, it was Malaysia's official entry to the 2024 Oscars. But this success came at a cost when the film was censored. Last weekend the Olympic Gold Medallist, Lauren Price MBE, became Wales' first female boxing world champion – winning the WBA, IBO, and Ring Magazine World Titles in spectacular fashion in her hometown of Cardiff by beating WBA welterweight champion Jessica McCaskill. She joins Anita to talk about her achievement, her diverse sporting career and her legacy.Presented by Anita Rani Producer: Louise Corley Studio Engineer: Bob Nettles

So much of our lives happen in the mind. Some neuroscientists will argue all of it is happening in the mind. But without question, so much of life is about your mindset. How we manage stress, disease, failure, challenges and hurdles, those are all about our mindset. That is why I brought on gold medalist and mindset master Laura Wilkinson, who won medals in every competition she ever qualified for and decided to go for another Olympic gold at the age of 39.Laura Wilkinson is an Olympian diver who holds a rare honor of having won an individual gold medal at every major international meet for which she was eligible. A specialist on the platform, Wilkinson attended the University of Texas where she was NCAA Champion in 1997 and 1999, won the 1998 Goodwill Games, won her first Olympic gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Games and has since won medals at World Cups (2004) and World Championships (2005) as well as competed in two other Olympic games (2004, 2008). She is an inductee in the Swimming Hall of Fame, a 19-time US champion and returned from retirement at age 39 with the aim to compete at Tokyo 2020. A combination of the COVID pandemic delay and serious neck surgery meant that never happened but it motivated Laura to take her coaching to a new level by creating the online course Confident Competitor, with the goal of helping athletes eliminate performance anxiety.Join us as we explore:What it means to have a champion's mindset whether you are a gold medal Olympian or a 15-year-old Laura who was told she started too late and her diving would never amount to anything. What it means to be anti-fragile, resilient and develop grit by developing the mindset that our most painful setbacks and defeats can become our greatest strengths and lessons. The power of mentorship, finding inspiration from others, their stories, and their struggles. Why goals can be “unrealistic” but why it is also okay not to accomplish them, how to overcome fear, the power of self-talk, the importance of flexibility and adaptability, and why flow state is not something magical that just happens but must be trained and prepared for.How to approach athleticism and performance as you begin to mature in age.Contact:Website – https://www.laurawilkinson.comCourse – Confident Competitor, https://pursuitofgold.lpages.co/confident-competitor-2023/Mentions:Person - Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Flow StateBook – Steven Kotler, The Art of Impossible.Product – KAATSU, https://madetothrive.co.za/product/kaatsu-c3-black/Support the showSupport the show on Patreon:As much as we love doing it, there are costs involved and any contribution will allow us to keep going and keep finding the best guests in the world to share their health expertise with you.
