God Is Building His Church in the Midst of WarFor many people, Ukraine is known primarily through the images and stories that come out of the war: destroyed buildings, missile strikes, soldiers at the front, and families who have lost loved ones. But spending time in Ukraine reveals something that is harder to see from a distance. People are still living their lives, churches are still gathering, communities are being served, and Christians are continuing to share the hope of the Gospel.Recently, Gospel Today had the opportunity to sit down with Graham Marshall, who was visiting Ukraine for the first time. Graham and his wife, Sharon, have been connected to ministry in Ukraine for more than 30 years, dating back to their involvement with Ukrainian churches and ministry leaders in the 90s. After eight days in the country, Graham shared some of the things that surprised him and how the visit changed his perspective on life and ministry during wartime.Seeing Ukraine for the First TimeGraham knew before coming that Ukraine was at war, and some of his family members wondered whether it was the right time to visit. For Graham and Sharon, however, there was a confidence that if God was leading them to come, there was a purpose in being there.One of the things that surprised him was how little military presence he saw in everyday life. He expected to see more soldiers and more obvious signs of the war. Of course, there were reminders of the destruction, particularly during their trip to Mykolaiv, where they saw places that had been damaged by missiles. He also noticed that there were relatively few men on the streets, as many are serving at the front. But what stood out even more was that ordinary life continues.Life Continues During WarGraham was struck by the fact that people were still paying attention to things that might seem unimportant during wartime. In parks and public spaces, flowers were being planted. People were reading books and spending time together. At a prayer meeting, he met a woman who had spent time composing poetry.These things may seem small, but they revealed something significant about the Ukrainian people. There is still a desire to build, create, and prepare for a future beyond the war. People are not simply focused on surviving the present, they are looking forward to the day when the fighting will end and Ukraine can once again be a place of peace and beauty.After more than four years of war, Ukrainians have also had to learn how to continue with everyday life. The constant urgency and fear that marked the beginning of the full-scale invasion cannot be maintained forever. People still have to work, read, spend time with others, and carry on with daily responsibilities.That does not mean the war has become less painful or that people have forgotten what has happened. Instead, it demonstrates the resilience of a people who continue to value life and look toward the future.Remembering Those Who Have Been LostAt the same time, the reality of war is impossible to separate from everyday life. Graham described sensing a quietness among many Ukrainians, comparing it to the atmosphere of a memorial service. During a walk through the city, he came across a memorial with dozens of Ukrainian flags representing people who had been killed. Behind each flag was a person with a family and a story: fathers, husbands, grandfathers, and sons.For Ukrainians, the war is not something happening somewhere far away. It has affected families, churches, and communities personally. The loss is visible throughout the country, even as people continue with their daily lives.The Church Is Serving Its CommunityOn the other hand, a big encouragement for the Marshalls was what they saw in Ukrainian churches. During his visit, he had the opportunity to visit several churches and meet with pastors in the Mykolaiv region, as well as churches in Odesa. His impression was that the churches were healthy. In several places, churches were expanding their facilities, and unbelievers were coming through their doors looking for hope and answers.For pastors and ministry leaders, the circumstances have created opportunities to preach the Gospel and serve people who are searching for something they cannot find elsewhere. Rather than simply waiting for the war to end, these churches are actively reaching their communities and looking for ways to bring glory to God in the middle of difficult circumstances.One example was a humanitarian aid distribution that Graham attended. Around 300 people came to receive bread from the church. However what made the ministry particularly meaningful was that this was not a temporary response. The church had been providing this assistance for four years. That kind of sustained service demonstrates the role the church can play during a crisis. The church is meeting practical needs while building relationships with people in the community and creating opportunities to point them toward Christ.God Is Building His ChurchThe growth of some Ukrainian churches is particularly striking when considering everything the war has taken from the country. Graham and Caleb discussed how many pastors and ministry leaders have left Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. Yet, even with those losses, churches remain. Some churches continue to grow, and some are even being planted.From a human perspective, it can be tempting to explain church growth through systems, programs, finances, or leadership. Those things can certainly be useful, but the situation in Ukraine provides a reminder that the work of building the Church ultimately belongs to God.We often see circumstances from a very limited perspective. We see pastors leaving, families being separated, and people suffering. We naturally focus on what has been lost. But God sees what we cannot see, and He is able to work through circumstances in ways that we may not immediately understand.As Graham reflected, God can use difficult circumstances to accomplish His purposes and build His Church.God Working Through SufferingThis also changes the way we think about suffering. Caleb noted how easy it is to say that God is working “despite the war.” But he has come to think about it differently: God is working through the war.That does not make the suffering good, nor does it minimize the pain Ukrainians have experienced. But it reminds us that suffering does not place God outside of His purposes. He remains sovereign, even when we cannot understand what He is doing.Ukraine's experience also reminds us that suffering itself is not unique to one country. The circumstances may be different, but every person will eventually experience some form of pain, loss, or tragedy. The scale of Ukraine's suffering may be different, but the human need for hope is the same.The question is where we turn when suffering comes.

Amsterdam Part 2 of 2: Advice on shopping for a new suitcase. Welcome back to the Dr. Mary Travelbest Guide podcast. The FAQ is: I'm shopping for a new suitcase. Where should I look for one? Great question. Before you buy a suitcase, I want you to think about how you travel, not just what looks cute in the store. On most of my solo journeys, I carry just a personal item. What that means is I travel so light that most people wouldn't want to. So, here's my advice if you want a real suitcase. Start by looking at TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Costco, Macy's, Nordstrom Rack, Target, Amazon, and directly on brand websites like Samsonite, Travelpro, Delsey, Béis, CALPAK, and Away. If you want to touch the suitcase, roll it around, lift it, and test the handle, go to a store first. If you already know the size and brand you want, online shopping may offer you more options. My practical advice is this: do not buy a suitcase just because it is pretty. Roll it around the store. Lift it into the air as if you are putting it into an overhead bin. Check the wheels. Open the zippers. Pull the handle up and down several times. If it feels flimsy in the store, it will feel worse in an airport. For solo travelers, I usually recommend a lightweight carry-on spinner with four wheels. It should be easy to roll through train stations, airports, sidewalks, and hotel lobbies. If you take trains in Europe, remember that you may need to lift your bag up steps or onto luggage racks. Lighter is better. If you are a budget traveler, check TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Costco, and Nordstrom Rack first. If you want reliability, compare Samsonite, Travelpro, and Delsey. If style matters and you are willing to spend more, look at Béis, CALPAK, or Away. My favorite suitcase shopping test is simple: Can I manage this bag alone when I'm tired? Today's destination is Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. Here is a Three-Day First-Timer Itinerary for Amsterdam, especially for listeners who may be traveling solo, arriving from the USA, or visiting Amsterdam later in life and wanting to enjoy the city without feeling overwhelmed. Amsterdam is beautiful, but it is also busy. You will see canals, museums, trams, trains, bikes, cafes, boats, and crowds. The city works well, but you need to pay attention. My first practical tip is simple: watch out for bikes. Bike lanes are serious transportation lanes. Do not stand in them. Do not wander into them while looking at your phone. Look both ways before crossing, even if you think you are only crossing a sidewalk. Day One: Arrive, settle in, and get oriented. If you are arriving by train, you will likely come through Amsterdam Central. The trains in the Netherlands run on time, and the system is efficient. That does not mean it will feel easy when you are tired, carrying luggage, and trying to read signs in a new city. Give yourself extra time. Know whether you are taking a Sprinter train, a metro, a tram, or a bus. When I arrived in July 2025, I stayed at Via Amsterdam near Diemen Zuid. It was outside the city center, which meant I needed to use transit, but it also gave me a less expensive base. If you are staying outside the center, make sure your lodging is close to a train or metro station. That matters more than almost anything else. On your first evening, keep things simple. Check in. Do laundry if needed. Take a shower. Organize your day bag for the next morning. If your lodging offers breakfast, consider whether it is worth the price. I paid €12 for a hostel buffet breakfast, and I made a simple lunch to carry with me. For your first meal, choose something nearby rather than trying to cross the entire city. Amsterdam has many cozy restaurants and cafes. You might try Dutch pancakes, or if you want something sweet, look for stroopwafels. These are thin syrup waffles, almost like cookies. Place one over a hot coffee or tea cup and let the caramel-like center warm up. It is a small pleasure, and it feels very Dutch. If you have energy, take a short evening walk near a canal or transit station. Do not overschedule your arrival day. Your goal is to learn how the city moves. Day Two: Museums, canals, and classic Amsterdam. For lunch or an afternoon break, consider pancakes or a cafe. Carousel Pancakes is one option to look into. Another restaurant name you may hear is Moeders, which means "mothers." Amsterdam has a mix of traditional, cozy, international, and creative restaurants. Travel Mistakes My mistake for this episode: trying to understand everything at once. Amsterdam works well, but it takes a day to feel comfortable. My travel tip: do not stay only in the tourist center. A hostel or hotel near a good train or metro station can save money and still work well. My lesson: Amsterdam rewards alert travelers. Pay attention, stay flexible, and let the city teach you how it moves. The person he is referring to is beloved chef and food writer Anthony Bourdain, whose mythology and fandom seems to only have grown since his tragic passing in 2018. Tony, which comes to theaters on August 7th and was directed by Matt Johnson, captures a very brief time in Bourdain's life during a summer working as a dishwasher at a restaurant in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Along with co-stars Antonio Banderas, Leo Woodhall, Stavros Halkias, and Emilia Jones, he spent four weeks on Cape Cod recreating a version of Bourdain's coming-of-age lore. Johnson's directing style often involves allowing the actors to improvise and act on the fly, which was a new challenge for the young actor. It was intimidating of course, but I was really comfortable with these people,” Sessa said. He confirmed what viewers of Tony might hope to be true—Halkias improvised all of his punchy insults including when he says “flaco means an acrobatic that jumps from ass to ass.” Despite being on a tight shooting schedule, the cast got quite close and Sessa learned a lot working with acting heavyweight Banderas. Audiences will see Sessa hold his own with Banderas, but while Sessa can act, he is not quite as skilled in the kitchen. He claimed to be able to boil water and make pasta and “I guess I learned how to shuck oysters,” he told the podcast, “and I got better at washing dishes.” Banderas on the other hand is a skilled cook. Recently, while doing press with him for a film in Málaga, Banderas cooked a memorable paella for Sessa. The New York Tony premiere took place earlier this week and Sessa sported a chic Celine by Michael Rider look. “I'm afraid to say that when I'm not doing things like this, I dress like shit for the most part,” Sessa shared, admitting that a large part of his wardrobe consists of old t-shirts from Marshalls and sneakers with holes in the sole. He credited his stylist Warren Alfie Baker with helping him discover his red carpet style. Some songs feel like they're solely engineered for earbuds. Others are clearly meant for dashboard speakers, crowded barrooms, summer festival fields, and voices shouting the chorus back at the stage with beer raised overhead. “Double” by Ghost Town Marshalls belongs firmly in the second category. It's an unapologetically fun, anthemic blast of country-rock that understands one simple truth better than most modern rock records, sometimes great music is supposed to feel good.
Jeremy Marshall, the singer-songwriter who founded and fronts the Alt-Country band Hollerhead, says he doesn't know what to call the band's genre of music. “We just play our music,” he told us when he joined Roots Music Rambler this week. The Western Kentucky-based band mixes a steady diet of southern rock with country, blues and even bluegrass influences, or Americana as we've come to say about a blending of genres. Marshall and his wife/vocalist/songwriter/manager/operations (i.e. – the person in charge) Della joined Frank and Falls to talk about the group's existing catalog, new singles and a forthcoming second studio album. Jeremy told us the story behind the band and the band's name, which at first glance aroused curiosity in Falls, our Eastern Kentuckian on staff. “Ain't no heads of no hollers in Western Kentucky?!” he said. Turns out, that's not why the band has the name. The Marshalls explained where the name came from, which is a far better story than Falls assumed. Frank and Falls also dug into an interesting conversation on the show when Falls asked what artists Frank refuses to listen to or support because of non-musical reasons. The discussion and debate explored why controversial acts can be a holistic turn-off, but should also be given room for forgiveness. And, of course, hot off their visit to the Crossroads Acoustic Fest in Seymour, Ind., our co-hosts share new Pickin' the Grinnin' choices this week. Logan Mac and Meels get a nod from RMR.
