Are you FOCUSING too much on the WRONG stuff? I know I did for a very LONG time. Years back I let negative self-talk run the show. It can destroy you. Stop and ask yourself, "What do I typically think about most?" Possible failure? All your doubts and fears? Things that you DON’T want? It’s said that you get what you FOCUS on most. Is this true? I believe so. So why not just focus on the POSITIVES then? If it were only that easy... While you certainly don’t want to focus on negative shit, you still gotta acknowledge it and know it’s there. Let it scare ya a wee bit, but move on from it and focus on what you DO want. But don’t only think about what you want, TAKE THE MASSIVE ACTION NEEDED TO MAKE IT BECOME A REALITY. == In comes the 5/15/80 FOCUS RULE == 5% - Acknowledge the Negatives 15% - Pinpoint the Positives 80% - TAKE MASSIVE F*CKING ACTION IN THE NOW (aka PRESENT) Most dads I talk with have it ass-backward... 80% of their focus is spent on negative shit thy DON’T And only 5% of their focus is on the action. Yesterday was day #1 of our “Summer Games” 5 week competition we’re having inside the Forged Father. We took on the “Bodyweight Gauntlet”, which is a classic benchmark test I created nearly 10 years ago that I’ve put 1000’s of athletes through. It’s a simple test, but it’s NOT easy. Just like any hard workout, it pushes you both mentally and physically. You’ll go through and experience some DISCOMFORT. When in the moment, it’s not always “fun”, but what’s FUN is what comes AFTER finish… When you know you gave it all you had and you pushed yourself through the discomfort, it’s an amazing feeling. It’s from that we EARN COMFORT. Let me explain a bit deeper… There’s been a number of times I can specifically remember how UNCOMFY a workout was that brought me so much comfort in the end because I was willing to embrace and endure the discomfort during the workout. One of the most memorable times was from the 2018 Crossfit GAMES. The event was 2 rounds of the following… 1000m Row 750m Ski 50 Double DB Front Squats @ 50 lbs It was absolutely BRUTAL. I was in extreme DISCOMFORT just after the 1st round and my mind so badly wanted to give up and quit. But it was in that moment when I embraced the discomfort and pushed through, that I earned COMFORT. Once the event was done and I finished, I couldn’t have been more fulfilled. This to me is COMFORT. Had I given in and rested in the middle of the workout or slowed down because of the pain, the discomfort would have stayed because I’d know in my mind I didn’t give it my all. In that event, I didn’t back down from the discomfort. I didn’t allow myself to become a COWARD from the fatigue. Instead, I stayed right there in the fire and pushed myself to the brink of my physical capacity. To be honest, I could’ve finished dead last in the workout and I still would’ve been fine because I knew I had given my absolute best effort possible. That’s COMFORT. And this whole mindset of “EARNING YOUR COMFORT”, it just doesn’t apply to fitness. It applies to just about EVERYTHING within life. When you’re unmotivated or too tired to do this or that so you take the easy road out and skip it… That’s taking the easy road and the easy road will only lead to DISCOMFORT later on. Think about it. Every time you quit on yourself and give in to instant gratification, it always comes back to bite you in the ass. So, when UNCOMFY situations arise in life that make you think about quitting… Do you GIVE UP or do you keep pushing ahead? I’ll tell you now and I’m sure you already know… When you choose quick COMFORT and instant gratification in those moments, it only leads to DISCOMFORT later on. When you finally “get it” and it clicks for you, you’ll see DISCOMFORT as something completely different. In fact, you might even start to seek it out. EARN your comfort. EMBRACE DISCOMFORT. I just got back from a fun little get-away vacation with my fam. We went up north to Park Rapids, Minnesota where we had a nice spot next to a sandy beach on Long Lake. It was an amazing time and I thoroughly enjoyed myself while spending a lot of high quality, focused time with my girls. One of the things I’m most happy about? The fact that I didn’t do one bit of work while I was there. Years back you would have found me sneaking away to open my Mac book to “do work”. I’d be writing workouts, sending emails, checking in on clients, and working on projects because I’d feel like I’d be falling behind. If not that, I’d be freaking out about my nutrition and worrying about all the shit I was eating and drinking. I’d be more stressed when I was supposed to be de-stressed so when I’d get home from our trip I’d feel like I needed a vacation from our vacation :-) Not always the best time. This trip was so much different from any other trip I’ve taken with my wife and daughters before. I was fully present and relaxed the whole time (aside from when our daughters were fighting with each other) Best of all, I didn’t do one bit of work and actually “vacationed”. I ate what I wanted to eat and had a good amount of drinks and didn’t feel one bit guilty about it. While I choose NOT to go completely overboard, I certainly indulged myself with ice cream, pizza, chips, etc… Even though I was on vacation, I still made sure to get up early every morning before everyone else was awake to hit a quick bodyweight + kettlebell session outside next to the lake. I knew if I didn’t get in any type of training it’d actually give me anxiety so I made it a priority and got it done first thing in the AM before the day actually started. Plus waking up just as the sun was rising and getting in a great sweat in the great outdoors wasn’t something I wanted to miss. I enjoyed my time 110%. Why? What was so different? A few things... #1 - Being and Living in the PRESENT I didn’t allow myself to worry about “what I got to do when I get back home” or anything else that would pull me from my time with family. I just thought about being in the moment and actually ENJOYING my time. #2 - Embracing The JOURNEY I’m committed to a process which I know is a journey. A LIFELONG journey that’s going to have a lot of ups and some downs within it. One weekend or even a week “off” isn’t going to destroy all of my hard-earned results. It’s more so about the BIG PICTURE and the LIFESTYLE side of things. All of the consistent hard work, effort, and focused time I put in on a day to day basis away from vacations, holidays, and even “bad days” is what matters most. This is when the DISCIPLINE of it all truly pays off. When you uncover how it all really works and you’re able to embrace it all as a LIFESTYLE, that’s when things really start to transform. It’s about your habits and behaviors. Forget about the quick fix tactics and tricks that guarantee they’ll save you from your shitty bad habits and behaviors. They don’t work. Forget about the gimmicks and fads that only create short term results you can’t even enjoy. Start thinking about the BIG PICTURE and how you live on a day to day basis. This is what the Forged FATHER PROJECT is all about... I wanted to share my thoughts from the final episode of “The Last Dance”. More so, I wanted to address MJ’s ‘SECRET Weapon”. I do so within the newest episode of Forged FATHER FM HERE Off the top, everyone know’s that MJ was a superior athlete with his God-given talents. He could jump outta the gym with ease, he was fast and agile, and just an amazing athlete. On top of that, he was one of the hardest workers, fiercest competitors, and he wasn’t ever going to give up or quit. He was what you could call, “Mentally UNBREAKABLE”. His secret weapon? His ability to fully become focused and dialed in on the NOW. MJ’s closest friends and teammates would mention who he’s always in the present and in the moment. Many would comment that MJ never let the future or the past mess with the actions he’d take in the present. I AGREE. The PRESENT is what matters most and what you do in the NOW is all you can control. It wasn’t until I had figured this out for myself that things drastically changed for me. What really helped put this all into perspective was the book, “The Power Of NOW” by Eckert Tolle. I listened to this book when I was traveling to compete within the Crossfit Games in 2018. It had a tremendous impact on how I started to think from that day forth and I can tell you will 110% certainty, I helped me compete at a whole other level that week. In short, you can’t let the fear and doubt you have of the future or even the past have control over the actions who choose to take within the NOW. The NOW is the only thing you have control of. You can’t control what’s happening in the past nor can you control what will happen in the future. You can only control the NOW. So, what’s this have to do with YOU as a DAD?? Big situations call for BIG LEADERS to step up and do what they gotta do. I reflect on a specific moment in time when Scottie Pippen was given the opportunity to rise up as a leader but chose NOT to. So, what's this gotta do with you? What's this gotta do with being a DAD? Well, let it serve as a REMINDER. When you're a DAD, you're a LEADER. Your family needs you to be able to step up. Because they're your team. They depend on you. You get opportunities every day to step up and be the man you need to be for them. Simple things like… Working out when you don't want to or feel tired. Fueling your body better when you'd rather just eat like sh*t Playing with your kids at the end of a LONG day when you're completely exhausted Following through with your COMMITMENTS, especially when you had SAID you'd do something Jut simply being there for your family when then need you most. This includes doing the things YOU need to do to be at your BEST for them. So, when you shrug stuff off and "take a seat", you're dropping the ball. Not only for yourself but your FAMILY. All of this is just another way for you to shift your perspective and mindset so you can think about things a bit differently. If it gets you to take more consistent action, great. I got chills (again) while watching the latest episode of "The Last Dance". Not sure where I first heard this, but when I did, it created a MASSIVE MINDSET SHIFT in how I started to think and put certain things into perspective. It's a simple concept really… Instead of always saying, "I have to" do this or I "have to" do that, start saying, "I GET TO." Let me share a story with you about this. I caught myself in the "I HAVE TO" mindset just a few days back. As the world begins to "reopen" during this Pandemic, I was laying out the plans for what that's going to look like in my gym. There's a LOT of changes that'll need to be made as I start to bring athletes back in. The experience is going to be different. There are new rules to follow, and it's going to take a lot of work. So, as I started to look into the things that'll need to be done, I found myself getting frustrated, stressed, and a bit overwhelmed. I need more cleaning supplies, most of everything's sold out… We won't be able to use certain pieces of equipment because of the "social distancing" requirement… There's a limitation on how many people can attend sessions… So as I started to dig into all of the changes, I found myself saying, "I have to" which quickly put me into a negative mindset. Luckily, I caught myself and changed things up. I said I don't have to do any of this... I GET TO. In this day and age, it's surprising how much TIME men waste. The typical thought? I'll do it tomorrow... I'll do it next week... Well, what if TOMORROW doesn't come? What if next week doesn't come? In life, both facts and feelings MATTER. FACTS matter the most though... WHY? Facts are the TRUTH. The numbers. Facts are what is. Too many guys I talk with get too caught up in the FEELINGS and they don't pay enough attention to the facts. Feelings can FUCK YOU UP. It's like you hit a workout and you have an amazing performance. Facts wise, you got BETTER (RESULT). Feelings wise, you feel like you got WORSE. Inside The Forged FATHER Project I have my guys complete an important task every Sunday where we track the WEEKLY FACTS. We look at the key areas within our lives and take note of the numbers. Things like... Daily MACRO Intake (NUTRITION) Daily Workout Stats (FITNESS) Daily Gratitude (MINDSET) Daily Outcomes / Actions (PLANNING) Daily Connection (RELATIONSHIPS) There's a system I created to track FACTS in each of these areas. When we track the FACTS and IMPROVE on the facts, RESULTS HAPPEN. When you don't look at the facts, there is where guys find themselves in a funk feelings wise. FUCK YOUR FEELINGS. If you're constantly run-down every day and don't 'feel' motivated, facts probably say you're NOT working out consistently or at all. You can feel as bad about it as you want, but until you FIX THE FACTS, nothing will change. Get my drift? Feelings are great and all, but FACTS matter the most. So I wanted to do a quick recap on the Crossfit Competition I did a few weeks back with my buddy and teammate, Andy Janzen. We were able to WIN the Masters Division at the “Crossfit Circuit” that’s an annual event that’s been getting put on for the past 6 years. There were a total of 40 teams in our division and 450 athletes overall in the whole event. CRAZY… It was a FUN weekend filled with a lot of highs and I was thrilled to be a part of it and most of all, to WIN IT! Felt good to stand on top of that podium. But this episode isn’t about the competition… It’s about the mindset of “NEVER BEING TOO OLD”. Truth is, the day you tell yourself that you’re “too old” is the day you start dying. A few days back I was asked a question that I commonly get... "How do you it, man?" The question was referring to the drive and determination I have to get things done day after day. Here was my reply: "first off, I don't have the drive and determination EVERY DAY to do it"... The second thing I said was, "What if I DON'T do it?" This is a personal question I ask myself often... "What if I DON'T do it?" When it comes down to it, it's "DO OR DIE". Literally. I'm the man for my family. I have to supply for them so I have to best my damn best. I have a gym with lots of people and many many men inside of The Forged FATHER who depends on me showing up for them. This isn't about "motivation"... This is about doing the work I must get done because it's DO OR DIE. DO OR FUCKING DIE... In all honesty, that's the reality... Think about it. What if your life depended on YOU actually completing what you needed to do on a daily basis... Do you think you would get more done? Do you think you would keep "waiting for tomorrow?" Do you think you would just continue for to bank on "motivation" to show up? You won't ever truly LIVE should you continue to wait and just run off of motivation as most men do. And while your life is likely not dependent on you completing the daily work that needs to get done, your success and overall happiness inside of your life will. If I'm not out there taking action and doing the things I love to do to help the people around me, then I might as well be dying... So go DO. Or DIE... Your choice. I choose to DO, and so should YOU. Let me share a bit more about this guy so you get what I'm saying here… This guy is now 37, weighs 345 lbs and is extremely out of shape, constantly run down, and to make things worse, he’s a single father. His drop off in fitness and his discipline to take care of himself over the past 6 or so years has actually was one of the many things that lead to his divorce. Either way, this guy used to be a monster… He played D1 football in college at a lean and mean 275 lbs. He told me, as a d-end, he was probably around 10% body fat or less back then and he could easily deadlift 500+ lbs, Squat 400+ lbs and move like a freaking receiver. Now, not so much. Now it’s just a chore for this guy to chase after and play with his kids. It’s been mentally “defeating” in his words and I can understand where he's coming from perfectly. To go from being “the man”, playing D1 college football at the highest level to now, having a gut and being extremely out of shape, that has to be tough to deal with. This man has clearly lost that EDGE he used to have and now, he’s been struggling to get it back. And it’s mainly due to him being on the “defensive”. He's been on the defensive now for the past few years. He runs off of motivation and only works out when he feels like it. On the days where he’s not motivated (which happens to be most days), he doesn’t do anything and this causes him to drift back into his bad habits. This same defensive type of mindset has also put him into a “scarcity” type of lifestyle. He’s afraid to fail. He’s sick and tired of losing because nothing he does seems to ever work. And again, I get it… If you’re so stuck and in a pit, it can be hard to think about what it’s like being OUT of the pit. But you can’t sit around thinking about it. You have to TAKE ACTION and get your ass back on the offensive. Most of the dads I talk to who’ve lost their edge are doing the same thing. They live with a SCARCITY mindset that's created from being on the defensive. They don't want to take any risks. They feel they will already lose because when you're on the defensive, you're playing NOT to lose... You're not being the aggressor and taking action. Instead, you're sitting back doing nothing. A lot of times, these same guys are the ones who don't want to invest in themselves in fear of failure and loss. They just don't have the confidence within themselves. Here's what's up... If you're in a similar position, you have to let go of the defensive mindset. You have to get back on the OFFENSIVE. You have to be a relentless action taker. A man who does what he needs to do even when he's not motivated to do anything. Your action will CREATE motivation. Your IN-ACTION will only keep it dead. You gotta be a man who does what he needs to do even if there's a chance he might lose. Because you WILL lose, but you'll succeed because you keep going and you stay on the offensive. Bottom line is this... You can't just sit back hoping and wishing for change to happen. You have to step up and just GO! It'll be tough. It'll be a battle, but you have to be on the offensive. In this episode you'll hear from a current member of the Forged FATHER Project, Dennis O'Neil. Dennis has been a long time follower of mine since back in 2011. Back then I was still putting out a lot of programs such as "The Badass Body Blueprint" amongst other classics.
