Let's talk about the Law of Consecration. First we will start with the background leading into it, as well as what it means and how it's applied in early magic and occult before Mormonism. Next, we cover two chapters in Approaching Zion by Hugh Nibley that are on, you guessed it, the Law of Consecration. We end with some happy environmental news that should make everyone feel good. Did the Book of Mormon take place in South America? My guest Owen Ira Terry thinks so, and he lays out some of the evidence in this episode. An angel revealed South America as Lehi's landing site to Frederick G. Williams. Jacob said that they were living on "an isle of the sea" (2 Nephi 10:20), and the South American Model actually allows for this. Interesting candidate sites for the Land of Nephi and the Hill Cumorah are discussed. There was a great wall of Peru? And there are a bunch of other cool correlations that I had never heard of before. We also talk a bit about the creation vs evolution debate and the Flood of Noah. Check it out! This week Daniel and Fili discuss how we learn from the example of Jesse Gause and Frederick G. Williams that we cannot frustrate the Lord's work on earth. They also discuss the United Firm (and it's difference from the united order), and how the principles the Lord teaches them apply to us today, including the consideration of widows, children, and the poor as outlined in Section 83.

This week we discuss how scriptures that are specifically given to individuals at the time, can be applied to our lives and our circumstances.  For example, section 81 was originally given to Jesse Gause.  However, he later left the church and this revelation, when published substituted Frederick G. Williams name for Jesse Gause's name.  We discuss the importance of standing in the office in which you have been called and doing it faithfully.  Sometimes that is a calling in church, a calling in life, or a situation you are placed in.  Where much is given, much is required.  It is true, those who have been given more or know more should be expected to do more.  Finally, we discuss who is supposed to care for those that stand in need.  Who has claim upon the church or the Lord's storehouse?  Who has the responsibility to watch over the down trodden?  Join us this week as we continue to apply the scriptures to our personal lives.

This was one of the first steps in what would become the First Presidency one day. It was another step in organizing the priesthood. The Lord declares that the "keys of the kingdom" will belong to the First Presidency. What exactly does that mean? How would the church look without those keys? Most people are aware of the origins of the Book of Mormon - it was translated from golden plates by Joseph Smith.  Few are aware of how the LDS scripture, Doctrine & Covenants (D&C) came to be.  Revelations and other items included were selected by a committee consisting of Joseph Smith, Oliver Cowdery, Sidney Rigdon and Frederick G. Williams.  The "Doctrine" portion was the "Lectures on Faith" no longer in the D&C.  The "Covenants" portion has been changed over time.  The origin and history of the D&C is fascinating and remarkable.

The Interview:  As Joseph Smith reported his visions and revelations designed to restore the New Testament church, another preacher living nearby sought the same goals, but through very different means. Despite the fact that both were Restorationists, each viewed the other as in error. RoseAnn Benson, author of Alexander Campbell and Joseph Smith: 19th-Century Restorationsists explains the similarities and contrasts between Joseph Smith and Alexander Campbell. Joseph reported an open heaven with divine communications and angelic visitations restoring knowledge and priesthood powers. Campbell claims the heavens were closed and only through a strict reading of the New Testament could Christ's church be reestablished in the nineteenth-century. Shortly after the Book of Mormon was printed, critics raised their denunciations, but among them, it appears Alexander Campbell was the first to actually read the volume and write a book review, titling it “Delusions.” Calling Joseph Smith “as ignorant and impudent a knave as ever wrote a book,” Campbell claimed that “there never was a book more evidently written by one set of fingers, nor more certainly conceived in one cranium” than the Book of Mormon. Benson explains how Alexander Campbell’s influence on the earliest months after the church’s organization was greater than any other Christian religious leader, both for good and ill. Many early converts to Mormonism were proselyted from Campbell’s followers including a large number of leaders like Sidney Rigdon and Frederick G. Williams, who became counselors in the First Presidency. Enemies too came from the Campbellite persuasions, such as some who participated in the 1832 tarring and feathering of Joseph and Sidney. The two religious leaders never met, but their lives and pursuits intersected in multiple ways. RoseAnn Benson opens the door on this fascinating, if not short-lived competition. About Our Guest:  RoseAnn Benson was an adjunct professor of ancient scripture and Church history and doctrine at Brigham Young University. She has served as the assistant coach for the BYU swim and dive team. Sister Benson first started coaching at St. Petersburg Catholic High School in 1973. She has also coached at San Diego State University, James Madison University, Southern Illinois University, San Jose State University, and at West Florida Lightning Aquatics. RoseAnn Benson attended Brigham Young University where she earned a BA in physical education and minors in history and biology. Additionally, she obtained a K-12 teaching certificate. A few years later, RoseAnn returned to BYU to receive a MS in exercise science with a minor in health science. Later, she went to Southern Illinois where she received a PhD in community and school health, emphasizing in nutrition. She also received an MA at BYU in ancient Near Eastern studies with an emphasis in religious education.

Doctrine and Covenants | MP3 | ENGLISH

Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Hiram, Ohio, March 1832 (see History of the Church, 1:257–58). Frederick G. Williams is called to be a high priest and a counselor in the Presidency of the High Priesthood. The historical records show that when this revelation was received in March 1832, it called Jesse Gause to the office of counselor to Joseph Smith in the Presidency. However, when he failed to continue in a manner consistent with this appointment, the call was subsequently transferred to Frederick G. Williams. The revelation (dated March 1832) should be regarded as a step toward the formal organization of the First Presidency, specifically calling for the office of counselor in that body and explaining the dignity of the appointment. Brother Gause served for a time but was excommunicated from the Church in December 1832. Brother Williams was ordained to the specified office on 18 March 1833.

Revelation given to Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Kirtland, Ohio, 15 March 1833 (see History of the Church, 1:333). The revelation is directed to Frederick G. Williams, who had recently been appointed a counselor in the First Presidency.
