If you had to choose one word that could change your spiritual life, what would it be? President Spencer W. Kimball once shared what he believed was the most important word in the gospel. John explores why that word appears so often in scripture, how it connects to the sacrament, and how it can keep us from falling into spiritual pride cycles. Once you know this, you'll never see scripture study the same way again!
My friend Dr. Matthew L Harris (Historian, Colorado State University) joins us to talk about his powerful new book called “Second-Class Saints: Black Mormons and the Struggle for Racial Equality”— a fifteen-year labor of love. In Matt's book (which was a powerful read for me), he draws on never-before-seen private papers of LDS apostles and church presidents—including Spencer W. Kimball to help us understand the complexity of ending the ban—something that President Kimball considered long before becoming Church President. Matt talks about why the ban started, who started it, how it became official doctrine for decades, and what shifted to cause church leaders to end the ban. Matt also talks about why ending the ban didn't end racist teachings about black people—how all those prior teachings have now been refuted—but still might exists in our culture. Matt discusses key questions like was the ban doctrine or policy? Was it “just not time yet to end the ban”? And other important questions. Matt also talks about the importance of proximity by senior church leaders to those hurt by the ban and how those stories/experience changed hearts and were key to considering lifting it. Matt also shares insights on possible parallels to the priesthood ban and the experience of LGB Latter-day Saints who may also feel like “second-class saints”. I learned so much from Matt's book and loved having him on the podcast. I encourage everyone to read his book and then consider what each of us can do to better support those of the margins. BYU and SLC anti-vice. We discuss the history of Charles A. Callis, his career in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and politics, and his final assignment before death, creating a sexual purity surveillance and counseling/therapy program for Mormons in the 40s. After his death, Spencer W. Kimball took the reins and vastly expanded the reach and purposes of the program, resulting in The Miracle of Forgiveness. Cleon Skousen was running raids on gay clubs and anybody else seen as commie enemies of god's country. The systems they created have adapted, evolved, and conformed to the times, but never gone away, as evidenced by the recent SL Tribue piece about BYU's retrenchment and culture of fear. Then we chat about Minority report, a Tom Cruise sci-fi flick with surprisingly profound concepts. We wrap with happy news about the first openly transgender congressperson in American history. In today's episode, Neil and I reflect on the recent passing of my grandma and how I watched the end of her life unfold. We talk about letting God write in the hardest trials that shape our stories, and how trusting God as the author and finisher of our lives can bring peace and understanding, even when things don't make sense. We dive into personal experiences of grief, loss, and growth, discussing the lessons we've learned from family tragedies and struggles in our marriage. We also share insights from Camille Johnson's message about inviting Christ to be the author of our stories and Spencer W. Kimball's powerful words on tragedy and free agency. This episode is all about learning to embrace the difficult moments, trusting that God is guiding us through them to help us become stronger, better, and more faithful. Forty-six years ago this month, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, under then-President Spencer W. Kimball, lifted its prohibition preventing Black men from entering the all-male priesthood and Black women and men from participating in temple rites. This historic shift, the most significant since the faith stopped practicing polygamy, abruptly ended this racist ban, but it hardly ended racism within the church. After all, 126 years of theological justifications for the ban remained, including influential works such as “Mormon Doctrine” by apostle Bruce R. McConkie. Cleanup still needed — and needs — to be done. Building on President Gordon B. Hinckley's outreach efforts, current church leader Russell M. Nelson has called on members to lead out against racism and has cemented ties with the NAACP. Matthew Harris' new book, “Second-Class Saints: Black Mormons and the Struggle for Racial Equality,” explores the history of the priesthood/temple ban, from its racist roots under Brigham Young to its removal and its aftermath, with an eye especially on its effects on Black Latter-day Saints. With unprecedented access to the papers of Kimball, McConkie, Hugh B. Brown and Joseph Fielding Smith, Harris offers an insider view of the decision-making process among the church hierarchy regarding issues of race and this momentous move. What did President Spencer W. Kimball say the most important word is? John helps us remember the great blessings the Lord has offered His people, and shares examples of the transformative power of prayer as you face each day's challenges.
In honor of Mothers' Day, host Martin Tanner, describes the origin of the LDS doctrine of a Heavenly Mother, from Joseph Smith, as described by Eliza R. Snow, Zina Huntington, Parly P. Pratt, Brigham Young, and others. And, its confirmation by Gordon B. Hinckley, James E. Faust, Bruce R. McConkie, Spencer W. Kimball, James H. Talmage, B.H. Roberts and many others. The idea of a Heavenly Mother is found in three LDS hymns, in several official Church manuals, in the Joseph Smith History of the Church, the Ensign, Times and Seasons, and many other sources. Martin Tanner also describes the Biblical sources for a Mother in Heaven, the Early Christian scriptures refering to a Mother in Heaven, and ancient Jewish sources for the belief in a female deity in Jewish thought and doctrine.

Welcome brothers and sisters to Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS movie lovers belong! My name is Dives, today is Oct 8, 2022, this is episode 34 and will we be reviewing Bitter Wind (1963) https://youtu.be/q5HahApUeMQ Running time: 30 minutes This review works best if you have seen this film before, though that is not required. Spoiler alert Synopsis Billy is a simple Native American shepherd boy living on the Navajo reservation. His father George heads a tightnit and prosperous Navajo family who starts to occasionally drink with friends, coming home to a tongue-lashing from his wife Nellie. A gifted silversmith, George gradually begins to neglect his work, which provides much of the family income. Then he begins to sell off horses, goats, and pawn his silver jewelry to pay for his habit. Billy leaves his childhood home to further his education while Uncle Bitaani chides George about his drinking to no avail. At first, Nellie begs George to stop drinking but eventually she starts getting drunk as well. Billy returns from school and he and old Aunt Dezba are the only ones left to look after the needs of the younger children, they face hunger and the bitter winds of the harsh winter. With fleeting hope, Billy searches for his parents, hoping to find redemption. You may be wondering what any of this has to do with the COJCOLDS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Placement_Program The Indian Placement Program (IPP) or Indian Student Placement Program (ISPP), also called the Lamanite Placement Program,[1] t had its peak during the 1960s and 1970s. Native American students were placed in foster homes oof LDS members during the school year or LDS run boarding schools. The program was developed according to LDS theology, whereby conversion and assimilation to Mormonism could help Native Americans, who had been classified as Lamanites in terms of theology in the Book of Mormon. An estimated 50,000 Native American children went through the program.[2][3] The foster placement was intended to help develop leadership among Native Americans and assimilate them into majority-American culture. The cost of care was borne by the foster parents, and financially stable families were selected by the church. Most of these placements took place on the Navajo Nation, with a peak participation of 5,000 students in 1972. The program decreased in size after the 1970s, due to criticism, changing mores among Native Americans, and restriction of the program to high school students as schools improved on reservations. Many of the students and families praised the program; others criticized it and the LDS Church for weakening the Native Americans' ties to their own cultures. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intermountain_Indian_School Conclusion Spencer W. Today on the podcast I'm talking with Dr. Christopher Oscarson, a scholar of environmental humanities and an associate dean of undergraduate education at BYU. Christopher, or Chip as he's known, recently delivered an address entitled “Let Your Education Change You,” and I wanted to talk with him about another important speech he cited in his talk, President Spencer W. Kimball's landmark address “The Second Century of Brigham Young University.” Dr. Oscarson challenged me to ask not how learning can help me get ahead, but how it can refine my character. We talk about the challenges of faith-based higher education, whether real learning can happen outside the classroom, and why President Kimball worried about “invading ideologies.” I hope you enjoy the conversation.
Paul Reeve recently wrote: In June 1978, President Spencer W. Kimball received a revelation which returned the Church to its universal roots and restored what was lost, priesthood and temple admission to people of African descent. This … did not mark something new as much as it reestablished a commitment to the founding principles of the Restoration. [It] reconfirmed the Church's original universalism, that the human family in all of its diversity is equal in God's sight, that Jesus Christ claims “all flesh” as his own, that he is “no respecter of persons,” (D&C 1:34-35; 38:16) and that “all men are privileged the one like unto the other, and none are forbidden” (2 Nephi 26:28). In this episode of Church History Matters, we take a close look at the details surrounding this watershed revelation of reversion and repair. Both out on the peripheries of the Church and at heart of Church headquarters within the presiding councils we'll see the Lord gently influencing circumstances toward the fulfillment of his purposes. Yet he waited with divine patience until all of the apostles were unified in approaching him with a desire to lift the ban—then he made his will known with power. The story we trace today of how they get there under President Kimball's gentle leadership is instructive on so many levels. For show notes and transcript for this and other episodes go to https://doctrineandcovenantscentral.org/church-history-matters-podcast/
In 1907, the First Presidency codified the Church's official policy about black African participation in both priesthood and temple declaring that, “No one known to have in his veins negro blood, (it matters not how remote a degree) can either have the Priesthood in any degree or the blessings of the Temple of God; no matter how otherwise worthy he may be.” By contrast, in 2020 Church President Russell M. Nelson reminded all church members that, “Your standing before God is not determined by the color of your skin. Favor or disfavor with God is dependent upon your devotion to God and His commandments and not the color of your skin.” The major catalyst shifting the Church away from that discriminatory 1907 policy and toward the marvelous inclusivity encapsulated in President Nelson's words, was the Lord's revelation to Church leaders in 1978. But this revelation didn't come all of the sudden nor out of the blue; in fact, it was decades in coming and grew out of the convergence of real-world circumstances in which Church leaders found themselves and the Church. In today's episode of Church History Matters, we take a look at some of the relevant historical developments in the Church during the 70 year period from 1908-1978—from the decades-long season of racial hardening and exclusion, to a softening and relaxing of certain Church policies under President David O. McKay in the 1950s and 60s, to disharmony and divergence of views among the apostles in the 60s, and finally to the unexpected call of Spencer W. Kimball as Church president in 1973. So today we set the stage for next week's climactic episode all about the details of the 1978 revelation itself. Once people come to terms with the uncomfortable idea that Brigham Young committed an error in endorsing a priesthood ban on church members with black African ancestry, a puzzling question naturally follows: “If the ban was an error, then why didn't it get corrected earlier than 1978?! There were nine Church presidents between Brigham Young and Spencer W. Kimball and 101 years between President Young's death in 1877 and President Kimball's revelation in 1978. So why did it take so long to correct this mistake and again offer full privileges to black Africans in the Church as they had enjoyed in Joseph Smith's day?” In today's episode of Church History Matters, we attempt to offer at least the beginning of an answer to this question by tracing the key moments and decisions in the leadership councils of the Church when, instead of correcting this error, they came to conclusions that led to an unfortunate hardening in place of the priesthood ban. In this episode, the years 1879, 1904, 1907, and 1908 will sadly be added alongside the year 1852 as we piece together both the timeline and the reasoning behind this ban. Subscriber-only episodeJoin Valerie and colleague Taylor Petrey in this second episode in a four-part series studying Taylor's must-read book Tabernacles of Clay, a study of the movements of the LDS church in the realm of gender and sexuality spanning the time period beginning post WWII to present. In this episode Val and Taylor address the following: How ideas about homosexuality evolved from a moral issue to a legal issue to a medical issue and then to a psychological issue. How under the leadership of Spencer W. Kimball, LDS church leaders adopted (for the first time) the role of pastoral counselor, offering advice and guidance for a variety of issues for which they had no formal psychological training. How the LDS church's stance on homosexuality and heterosexuality as "contagious" informed many of their various ideas about its cause and cures (many of which are listed in this episode). How the church attempted to scientifically prove their stance rejecting the scientific community's formal depathologization of homosexuality. And later admitted failure.Thank you for supporting Val and Nathan's countless hours devoted to enriching your spiritual journey! In this first episode in a fascinating four-part mini-series, Valerie and special guest Taylor Petrey break down the historical shifts in the theology of gender and sexuality in the LDS church beginning in the post-WWII era through the present as outlined in his excellent book Tabernacles of Clay (linked below). Questions addressed in this episode [among others]: --How historical racial oppression relates to the larger picture of gender and sexual oppression --A paradox: If gender and sexuality is pre-mortal in nature, why it constantly seems to need human mediation, legislation, commandments --How the LDS church's post-WWII stance on gender/sexuality is related to these same issues within larger Christian culture and seen as a matter of national security --The connection between the church's post-WWII stance in strong support of the patriarchal order of marriage and their polygamy legacy FRIDAY'S EPISODE 140 EXPLORES THE FOLLOWING: [among other topics] (accessed via subscription at the link below): --Culturally and religiously evolving stances on homosexuality (from moral to a legal to a medical to psychological phenomenon) --An exploration of the very fraught relationship between the psychological world and the Mormon ecclesiastical world in the treatment of psychological issues in general and sexual issues specifically --Significant developments in the administration of Spencer W. Kimball, the "self-help" movement, Miracle of Forgiveness, and the impact of this era --An exploration of the proposed varying causes and cures for homosexuality throughout the years as speculated by various LDS church leaders Thank you for supporting Val and Nathan's countless hours devoted to enriching your spiritual journey! The heaviness of the Covenant School Shooting in Nashville is weighing heavy on our hearts, so we felt like God wanted us to process this out loud today, on our podcast, with you. We don't profess to be the experts, but we'll share our experiences and some of the writings and teachings from leaders both in our faith and other faiths that have helped us navigate hard times like these. If you've been feeling helpless and frustrated about what happened in Nashville last week, I hope this episode can provide a safe space to process those feelings and help guide you to the places where we've found peace and understanding. [07:55] - How do Corrine and Neil feel about mentioning the school shooting to their children? [10:23] - “Why would God not prevent this?” [14:10] - What about the small moments that change the outcome, like divine intervention? [16:22] - Is there any purpose of an imperfect world? [20:13] - Tragedy and beauty both exist in the world. [22:42] - Facing situations with thoughts, prayer, and action. [25:56] - Corrine talks about experiencing the power of collective prayer. Satan's entire goal is to frustrate the Lord's plan to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of both men and women. And, since the dawn of time, the father of lies has focused a huge amount of effort distorting the truth about women. Why? Because women are central to the success of the Lord's plan for the salvation of His children. Unfortunately, the adversary has been stunningly successful in his sinister plot, and many have adopted his cunning lies as reality. If we, as covenant women, desire to stand firmly in our faith in these last days, we must recognize the lies Satan tells us about ourselves and our purpose. And then, we must learn and embrace the truth of who we are and what we are on earth to do. In this episode, we will explore both Satan's lies and the Lord's life-changing truths about our roles and responsibilities as women in the His Church. This Week's Shine Challenge: I invite you to ask God about your divine role and how you fit into His plan. As I have reflected on 2022 and as I look ahead to 2023, a quote from Spencer W. Kimball has been playing on repeat in my mind: “Much of the major growth that is coming to the Church in the last days will come because many of the good women of the world … will be drawn to the Church in large numbers. This will happen to the degree that the women of the Church reflect righteousness and articulateness in their lives and to the degree that the women of the Church are seen as distinct and different—in happy ways—from the women of the world.” Today, we will explore how we can become those women. Our long-awaited deep-dive deconstruction of Adam-God Doctrine, or theory, depending on who you ask. What is it? Who taught it? Why is it controversial? How is it treated by the corporate Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints today? ‘As we are, god once was, as god is we may someday become' is a tried-and-true Mormon doctrine and the Adam-Eve-Gods Doctrine fits perfectly within this logical loop. As the title of the doctrine alludes to, Heavenly Father took the form of Adam with one of his wives, Heavenly Mother Eve, to create and populate the earth, after which he went to Adam-ondi-Ahman, in Missouri, where he ascended back to godhood to continue his charge from Elohim to create worlds without end. Then we dive into the nearly-final segment of Bruce R. McConkie's Millennial Messiah. McCranky loves the idea of fire burning the sinners and his charged language justifies the physical suffering and burning of anybody who isn't Mormon or living its dictates. Further, when Jesus returns to reign in the millennium he will rule with an iron rod; the future dystopian Mormon theocracy is a dangerous and unforgiving land. How all these teachings pervade Mormon culture to this day can be seen by Mormons periodically carrying out the will of gods by causing the suffering and death of sinners and those who oppose the kingdom of God. Mormonism creates dangerous men, yet the church never suffers the repurcussions. We round out the episode with some happy news about cannabis legislation heading to President Biden's desk. Eric Johnson, author of Introducing Christianity to Mormons: A Practical and Comparative Guide to What the Bible Teaches, met with Josiah Walker and Bryan Catherman to discuss how he uses a Mormon book to witness to Mormons. The Miracle of Forgiveness is a book written by former LDS President and Prophet, Spencer W. Kimball. In it, Kimball is clear about what Mormons believe. Johnson explains how that differs from the biblical gospel and how he has conversations with people about it. Copyright 2022. For more information, please visit SaltyBeliever.com.

Have you ever taken a "penny quiz"? If not, without looking, see how much you can remember about the penny. And when you realize you can only remember the barest details, ask yourself this: why is that something as common as a penny can be so easily forgotten? President Spencer W. Kimball once mused, "When you look in the dictionary for the most important word, do you know what it is?" His answer: the word remember. In this episode we study what the Israelites were commanded to remember as they exited their 40 year wilderness in search of perspectives or principles the Lord would have us remember as we exit from or exist in our own. President Spencer W. Kimball said in 1976 that “Few men have ever knowingly and deliberately chosen to reject God and his blessings. Rather, we learn from the scriptures that because the exercise of faith has always appeared to be more difficult than relying on things more immediately at hand, carnal man has tended to transfer his trust in God to material things. Therefore, in all ages when men have fallen under the power of Satan and lost the faith, they have put in its place a hope in the “arm of flesh” and in “gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know” (Dan. 5:23)—that is, in idols. This I find to be a dominant theme in the Old Testament. Whatever thing a man sets his heart and his trust in most is his god; and if his god doesn't also happen to be the true and living God of Israel, that man is laboring in idolatry.” What can we learn from the Old Testament about worshiping God and rejecting idols? We'll explore that, and much more, in today's episode of “Abide: A Maxwell Institute Podcast.” The post Abide: Exodus 18-20 appeared first on Neal A. Maxwell Institute | BYU.

Spencer W. Kimball, his counselors, and their fellow apostles prayed about the revelation that Latter-day Saints have canonized as Official Declaration 2 in June 1978. They immediately let it be known that the Lord had told them that all worthy people, of any race, color, creed, or nationality, would be eligible for temple blessings and that men could be ordained. This lifted a racial restriction that had lasted for more than a century that denied ordination to men of Black African descent and the endowment and sealing ordinances to men, women, and children of Black African descent. Importantly, President Kimball's journey to receiving the revelation began decades earlier. Even as a boy he recognized how his neighbors treated Native Americans with distrust and disdain. He saw inequity and wanted to correct it. Although he did not know as a lad that he would receive a revelation with global consequences, it's remarkable to me that something President Kimball noticed as a child would change The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' global trajectory. My name is Joseph Stuart, I'm the public communications specialist at the Maxwell Institute. We aren't here to present a lesson, but rather to hit on a few key themes from the scripture block that we believe will help fulfill the Maxwell Institute's mission to inspire and fortify Latter-day Saints in their testimonies of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ and engages the world of religious ideas.” The post Abide #24: Official Declaration Two appeared first on Neal A.
