But now we've learned it is very possible that would never have happened had this scientist not had a bit of sorcerer in him as well. (Ghosts, Gravity, and Isaac Newton) *** On Easter Sunday, 1475, in the city of Trent, a 2-year-old boy named Simon was found dead. This one act triggered a wave of anti-Semitism that wiped out a community of Jewish males and threatened the power of a pope. All from the death of one child. (History's Most Dangerous Toddler) *** "I am innocent, that mark of mine will NEVER be wiped out. It will remain forever to shame the county for hanging an innocent man…. " Alexander Campbell said these words on June 21, 1877 shortly before his hanging. And true to his word, the handprint he left behind refuses to fade away – no matter how hard people try to remove it. (The Reappearing Handprint) *** A century ago, in July 1920, The Illustrated Police News, ran a single story on its front page, complete with a drawing of a man lying on top of a woman, both surrounded in blood. But even more disturbing – a young boy, very much alive, and apparently watching the whole thing. (The Little Boy Who Watched His Parents Die) *** It took a while before the first woman to be hanged would take place in the USA – but in 1778 it finally happened. And her name was Bathsheba Spooner. In this episode, we're delving into the haunted heart of Pennsylvania, a state rich with historical significance and eerie tales. From the bloody fields of Gettysburg to the dark corners of notorious prisons, Pennsylvania's haunted locations offer a chilling glimpse into its past. Known as the Keystone State, it has seen everything from battles to industrial booms, leaving behind restless spirits and paranormal mysteries. We'll be uncovering ten of the most haunted places across the state, each with its own tragic history and ghostly encounters. Whether it's the eerie echoes of Civil War soldiers or the lingering presence of old inmates, these locations are bound to send shivers down your spine. Featured Locations: Gettysburg Battlefield 1195 Baltimore Pike, Gettysburg, PA 17325 Beyond the well-documented hauntings, there are countless reports of strange mists and shadowy figures at Little Round Top and the Wheatfield, where some of the bloodiest fighting occurred. Phantom cannon fire and the scent of gunpowder are still experienced by many visitors to this day. Hotel Bethlehem 437 Main St, Bethlehem, PA 18018 In addition to the ghostly presence of May Yohe, guests in Room 932 often hear the sound of a typewriter clacking late at night—perhaps the spirit of a former writer staying at the hotel. The grand staircase is also known for mysterious cold spots and the sound of phantom footsteps echoing through the halls. Eastern State Penitentiary 2027 Fairmount Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19130 Visitors often feel an overwhelming sense of dread near Al Capone's cell, where he reportedly saw visions of his old enemies. The most unsettling part of the prison is Death Row, where disembodied voices call out names, and cell doors slam shut on their own. The Old Jail Museum 128 W Broadway, Jim Thorpe, PA 18229 In addition to Alexander Campbell's famous handprint, there have been numerous sightings of shadowy figures moving between cells, and many visitors report hearing eerie whispers in the basement dungeon, where solitary prisoners once suffered in silence. Fort Mifflin 6400 Hog Island Rd, Philadelphia, PA 19153 Beyond the Screaming Woman, visitors have encountered the spirit of a Revolutionary War soldier walking the perimeter of the fort. The sound of invisible footsteps pacing the gunpowder magazine is a frequent occurrence for paranormal investigators. The Farnsworth House Inn 401 Baltimore St, Gettysburg, PA 17325 Guests have reported hearing heavy breathing and the sound of gunfire coming from the attic, where Confederate soldiers once took aim during the battle. In the Sweeney Room, guests often wake to the sensation of a cold hand touching their arm in the middle of the night. Pennhurst Asylum 100 Commonwealth Dr, Spring City, PA 19475 The Quaker Building is notorious for sightings of a ghostly nurse, while visitors to the tunnels beneath the asylum have reported hearing the cries of former patients who suffered in isolation. Many leave feeling an intense sense of sadness and despair. The Harmony Inn 230 Mercer St, Harmony, PA 16037 One of the most active rooms is on the third floor, where guests frequently hear the sound of a rocking chair moving by itself and faint voices singing old hymns. Staff have also experienced objects moving mysteriously in the dining room late at night. Jean Bonnet Tavern 6048 Lincoln Hwy, Bedford, PA 15522 In addition to the man seen near the bar, guests often feel a chilling breeze in the upstairs bedrooms, where several travelers passed away over the centuries. Some have even seen ghostly figures sitting at the tables in the main dining hall after closing time. The Logan Inn 10 W Ferry St, New Hope, PA 18938 Beyond the Revolutionary War soldier, there are frequent reports of children laughing in the halls, and guests in Room 6 often wake to the sight of a woman dressed in colonial attire standing by the window, looking out as if waiting for someone to return. Police seized a cellphone during a search incident to the arrest of a known drug dealer. The phone was displaying incoming text messages on its screen. The police believed the messages revealed a transaction for heroin, which would likely be laced with fentanyl, was in progress. The police impersonated the drug dealer by responding to the text messages, and arranged to have the drugs delivered to the dealer's residence. Applicant Dwayne Alexander Campbell arrived at the residence and was arrested. Mr. Campbell was charged under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA). At trial, Mr. Campbell brought a motion to exclude evidence, claiming that his rights under s. 8 of the Charter had been infringed by the police action in using the dealer's phone to communicate with him. The trial judge rejected Mr. Campbell's claim that he had a reasonable expectation of privacy in the text messages, and concluded that the likelihood that the drugs were laced with fentanyl created exigent circumstances that justified the warrantless use of the drug dealer's cellphone. Mr. Campbell was convicted and sentenced. The Court of Appeal held that Mr. Campbell did have a reasonable expectation of privacy in his electronic communications, but that the police action was justified by the exigent circumstances doctrine. Consequently, there was no breach of Mr. Campbell's s. 8 rights. The Court of Appeal dismissed Mr. Campbell's appeal. Argued Date 2024-03-21 Keywords Charter of Rights — Search and seizure (s. 8) — Enforcement (s. 24) — Exigent circumstances — Police seizing cellphone in search incident to the arrest of a known drug dealer — Incoming text messages from appellant visible on its screen — Police believing messages concerned impending drug deal involving fentanyl — Police impersonating drug dealer, facilitating drug transaction with the appellant via text message — Whether police breached appellant's s. 8 rights by warrantless use of drug dealer's cellphone to impersonate drug dealer and engage in electronic conversation with accused — Whether police action justified by exigent circumstances because the police reasonably believed the drug transaction may have involved fentanyl — Whether police breached the appellant's s. 8 rights by intercepting private communications without authorization — Whether evidence obtained by s. 8 breaches should have been excluded — Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, S.C. 1996, c. 19, s. 11; Criminal Code, R.S.C. 1985, c. With St. Patrick's Day coming up on Sunday, you'll be hearing a lot of stories about the Irish and many will be celebrating their Irish heritage. One of the most infamous periods in American history, and certainly here in Pennsylvania, involved the Molly Maguires. The Molly Maguires were a secret organization of Irish coal miners in the anthracite coal region of Pennsylvania in the late 1800s. Assassinations and violence grew throughout the area because of poor working conditions in the mines and ethnic tensions, leading to 16 killings. The Molly Maguires were thought to be responsible, and 20 supposed members were executed. Kevin Kenny is author of the 1998 book Making Sense of the Molly Maguires and a Professor of History and the Glucksman Professor in Irish Studies at New York University. On The Spark Wednesday, Kenny was asked who the Molly Maguires were,"Nobody agreed at the time. Historians haven't agreed since. I would say we need to avoid, two extremes. One is that they were simply savages who killed people for the sake of killing people. Believe it or not, that's how they were described in the 19th century. The other is that they were simply innocent victims because 20 men were hanged. But there were 16 other dead bodies on the stage at the end, and somebody killed them." Working conditions and ethnic differences were two factors that led to violence, especially after coal miners unionized,"Underground and mining communities are always difficult and harsh. It's brutal work. People died of miners lung in those days and they still do. I can tell you that the fatality rates and mining accidents were three times as high in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania as they were in Europe. It's really difficult work. There's also a division based on class, on ethnicity, because most of the skilled miners and this was really an elite workforce who built the mines and then freed the coal from the coalface. Most of them were were British, English or Welsh. Most of them were Protestant. Some of the skilled miners were Irish, but most of the laborers were Irish. It's a very important distinction between being a laborer and a miner because it comes down to this. The skilled miner will come in, come into the mine underground in the morning. They will free the coal from from the coal face by using powder to explode it out of the coalface. Then they'll go home. The Irishman will stay down underground all day loading the coal into carts. It's a different kind of work. The union brought the two sides together. The Molly Maguires represents the marginalized and the exploited." Kenny described what happened,"There were two waves of violence attributed to the Molly Maguires. The first was in the 1860s, during the Civil War. It was a mixture of rudimentary labor organizing and opposition to the military draft to conscription in the same category as the New York City draft riots, which are more famous. Six people were killed in that violence. Nobody was convicted at the time. The second wave of violence was in the middle of the 1870s, and it directly followed the destruction of the labor union. The labor union went down to defeat in the middle of the worst national economic depression the country had ever seen, and the 1870s the labor union, the WBA, was crushed. Into the vacuum stepped the Molly Maguires. Six more killings took place in the summer of 1875. That's the context in which it unfolds. (The victims were affiliated with the coal companies or those perceived to be enemies of the miners). The killings in the 1860s were traced retroactively to the Molly Maguires and a mopping up operation. They got the big wigs Alexander Campbell out in Carbon County, Patrick Hassler in Northumberland County, and John Kehoe in Schuylkill County. That's the context. And the explanation is Franklin Gowans attempted to secure monopoly control over the production and distribution of anthracite in the lower region, and eliminating all obstacles in his path." The suspected Molly Maguires paid for their alleged crimes with their lives -- justly or not as Kenny explained,"The 20 men who were hanged. My sense is, some were guilty as charged. Some were possibly innocent as charged. Others were probably guilty of other, crimes. But my position is that there were Molly Maguires and they killed people. It's a historian's question to try and explain, to try and make sense of what happened. I will tell you that, John Kehoe was the alleged ringleader of the whole Molly McGuire thing. He was based on Schuylkill County. He was active in politics. He was a marked man, and he was convicted in 1877 of the very first Molly McGuire killing, which took place in 1862." Kehoe was pardoned posthumously by Pennsylvania Gov. Milton Shapp in 1979. Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Today's episode of the Real Life Theology Podcast goes deep into the life, contributions, and challenges faced by the influential religious reformer, Alexander Campbell. It explores Campbell's journey from Ireland to America, his relentless commitment to delivering biblical Christianity, and his drive for unity. Dr. Rick Cherok, a keen admirer of Campbell, a well known professor of history at Ozark Christian College, discusses lesser-known aspects of Campbell's life, including his tenacity, fearlessness, and ability to remain constant in achieving his goals, as well as engrossing personal anecdotes. The interview further illuminates Campbell's far-reaching impact as a powerful Christian apologist of the pre-Civil War era in America, his role in sparking social reform, and how his life and beliefs could be relevant for 21st-century Christians seeking a biblical justice route not grounded in liberalism. The narrative highlights Campbell's resilience even in the face of significant adversity and underscores his fervent faith and dedication to his mission of bringing the world to Christ, which shaped his powerful legacy. تعريف العبارة " نحن مسيحيون فقط، ولسنا وحدنا المسيحيين " We are Christians only, but not the only Christians في عام 1808 كتب توماس كامبل أن "كنيسة المسيح على الأرض هي كنيسة واحدة أساسًا وقصدًا ودستورًا Church of Christ on earth is essentially, intentionally and constitutionally one We are Christians only, but not the only Christians. 10) الوحدة / الحرية / المحبة تعريف العبارة "في الاساسيات (الامور الجوهرية) وحدة وفي غير الاساسيات حرية وفي كل شيء المحبة" - In essentials unity, in nonessentials liberty, and in all things love (charity) ربما يكون هذا هو الشعار الأكثر شهرة في عائلتنا. Where the Scriptures speak, we speak; where the Scriptures are silent, we are silent. The church of Jesus Christ on earth is essentially, intentionally, and constitutionally one. We are Christians only, but not the only Christians. In essentials, unity; in opinions, liberty; in all things love. No creed but Christ, no book but the Bible, no law but love, no name but the divine "افعل أشياء الكتاب المقدس بطرق الكتاب المقدس". Do Bible things in Bible ways. Call Bible things by Bible names

Dozens of individuals around the world claimed to have had heavenly visions, much like Joseph Smith. This episodes highlights eighteen of those individuals who gave their accounts before 1832 (with one in 1838 from a member of the Church). These individuals are as follows: Catharine Hummer in 1786, the Richards Brothers in 1794, David Brainerd in 1812, Benjamin Abbott in 1813, Lorenzo Dow in 1814, Rachel Baker in 1814, Norris Stearns in 1815, Elias Smith in 1816, *Charles G. Finney in 1821, Benjamin Putnam in 1821, Asa Wild in 1823, Alexander Campbell in 1824, Billy Hibbard in 1825, John S. Thompson in 1826, Solomon Chamberlin in 1829, Martin Harris in 1831, Harriet Tubman in 1832, and James G. Marsh in 1838 (just before Joseph Smith gave his most in-depth account that became the canonized version). Why is Joseph Smith's first vision so foundational to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when it wasn't written down until twelve years later, no one was told of the vision before joining the Church, Heavenly Father didn't become a character in the vision until eighteen years later, and dozens of individuals were also having visions of God and Jesus Christ? How could Joseph Smith's first vision be "the greatest event in world history since [Jesus Christ]" if it seems by all accounts never to have happened?
“GHOSTS, GRAVITY, AND ISAAC NEWTON” and Other True Stories (PLUS BLOOPERS)! #WeirdDarknessClick here to find Weird Darkness in your favorite podcast app: https://linktr.ee/weirddarkness IN THIS EPISODE: The scientist Isaac Newton is best known for his being the first to create the theory of gravity. Kevin Withem and Otoma Edje co-host a discussion with Douglas Jacoby about his teaching ministry and how he moved from congregational leadership to a freelance teaching ministry. They also discuss unity within the Stone-Campbell Movement and the idea of "Christians, not the only Christians" and looking for (as Alexander Campbell said) the image of Christ in someone. Enjoy the conversation. In this book, Michael Burns addresses these issues head-on. He lays out a comprehensive examination of the scriptural worldview of the kingdom and how that calls us to approach our discipleship and our place in the world. He then considers the role of nations and the politics of the nations and where the kingdom of God stands in those domains. He then examines the more practical elements of how a Christian community should navigate through the murky waters of worldly politics and specific issues. His goal is not to provide absolute answers but to show how we might work our way through difficult and thorny topics with a kingdom-minded approach. Please enjoy this important conversation. In this week's podcast, we discuss some of the earliest criticisms of Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon. We start with an example before the Book of Mormon is published with Jonathan Hadley, the editor of the Palmyra Freeman, and an article he publishes in August of 1829 called the “Golden Bible”. We talk about how the arguments change once the Book of Mormon is published citing Alexander Campbell. In the early years of the Restoration Movement in America, Alexander Campbell and other leaders pled for nonsectarian Christianity, for followers of Jesus to be "Christians only." Not only does scripture speak against division, but also for Christian unity. Undenominational, nonsectarian Christianity is still a goal worth pursuing! Join the discussion as Becky talks about the need to go back to the scriptures, and lay aside human names, creeds, and philosophies. This is episode #5 in the "Summer Shorts" series.

Is your church a place where people feel safe and free to ask their questions and express their doubts? Does your church welcome open dialogue and robust debate regarding what the Bible teaches? In this podcast, Kerry recalls some of the writings of Alexander Campbell from his 1830 Millennial Harbinger which support the practice of promoting open dialogue, allowing people to hear all sides of an issue, and judging for themselves what they believe the Bible teaches. This is episode #3 in the "Summer Shorts" series.
We continue in our church history lessons with The Restoration Movement. Following the Reformation Period, it was discovered that many denominations did not go far enough in reforming Church government and church worship. They did not call things by Bible names and held practices that were church traditions rather than Biblical instructions. Out of this period of revival came a movement to get back to the New Testament way of practicing Christianity and church governances. The Restoration Movement was a product of many men. Thomas and Alexander Campbell, James O'Kelly, Alias Smith, Abner Jones, Barton W. Stone, Racoon John Smith were all men who saw the divisions of the church and trying to get back to the Bible making the church one as found in the New Testament scriptures. Mark Black teaches this lesson on the Restoration of the Christ's Church.
Dr. Doug Foster is an expert in the Stone-Campbell restoration movement in the U.S., the movement that produced the Churches of Christ. He helps us understand this tradition's history and where it may be going next. Check out Dr. Foster’s biography on Alexander Campbell here: https://www.eerdmans.com/Products/7633/a-life-of-alexander-campbell.aspx The post S1 E5: The Restoration Movement and the Churches of Christ appeared first on ACU Graduate School of Theology.
Paul Axton Preaches - Churches of the Restoration Movement once held to the doctrines of the historic peace churches as part of what was to be restored in the authentic church. By this measure, churches of this Movement do not meet the qualification of authentic Christianity, and as outlined by David Lipscomb, Alexander Campbell, and Barton W. Stone, Restoration Movement Churches are of the whore of Babylon described in Revelation. Become a Patron! If you enjoyed this podcast, please consider donating to support our work.

Is restoration of the first century church REALLY what we should be focusing on? Is there a danger in trying to do the right thing all the time? Is faith supposed to be scary? Chris Thompson and I discuss our similarities growing up in the Alexander Campbell traditions. He grew up Church of Christ Accapella and I grew up in the Christian Church(Disciples of Christ)
In 1801, a gathering to celebrate communion in Cane Ridge, Kentucky started a movement that would go on to indelibly shape Christianity in the South and throughout the world. As this group of Scots Presbyterians gathered to share in the bread and the cup, they couldn’t have imagined they would soon be accompanied by thousands of others, caught up in exuberant manifestations of the Spirit. Unanticipated and unplanned, the Cane Ridge revival was both a product of its time and something brand new. In this episode, we explore how ideas of charismatic emotive worship shaped our personal understandings of Southern Christianity. We then discuss the context around Cane Ridge and what led to this ecstatic expression of the Spirit. Finally, we’ll use Cane Ridge as an opportunity to think about questions around legitimacy and leadership within the church. Production Note: In the spirit of the unity and non-sectarianism of Cane Ridge, Barton Stone and Alexander Campbell began an ecumenical movement that led to the development of the Disciples of Christ, the Christian Church, and the Churches of Christ. For more information on the Stone-Campbell tradition and the denominations related to them, check out this link
In this episode I speak with Douglas A. Foster, the former Director of the Center for Restoration Studies and Professor of Church History at Abilene Christian University. We have found the long-lost manuscript of Third Peter. Do not miss the holy (satire) letter from the great Apostle Peter (or Alexander Campbell) describing the preacher's conduct among the brethren. Also do not miss our "divinely inspired" commentary on the said epistle. Seriously it is good reading for preachers to remain humble and be a servant, rather than being a puffed up clergy. The church I grew up in was part of what’s called the Restoration Movement. Led by Barton Stone and Alexander Campbell, the movement had the desire to unite the church and do away with denominationalism. Thank you!IN THIS EPISODE: The scientist Isaac Newton is best known for his being the first to create the theory of gravity. But now we’ve learned it is very possible that would never have happened had this scientist not had a bit of sorcerer in him as well. (History’s Most Dangerous Toddler) *** "I am innocent, that mark of mine will NEVER be wiped out. In his new book Hard-Fighting Soldiers: A History of African American Churches of Christ (University of Tennessee Press, 2019), Edward J. Robinson provides a comprehensive look at the church's improbable development against a backdrop of African American oppression. The journey begins with a lesser known preacher, F. F. Carson, in many ways a forerunner in the struggles and triumphs awaiting the preachers and lay people in the congregations to come. Robinson then builds on scholarship treating well-known figures, including Marshall Keeble and G. P. Bowser, to present a wide-ranging history of African American Churches of Christ from their beginnings—when enslaved people embraced the nascent Stone-Campbell Christian Movement even though founder Alexander Campbell himself favored slavery. The author moves on to examine how the churches grew under the leadership of S. R. Cassius, even as Jim Crow restrictions put extreme pressure on organizations of any kind among African Americans. Robinson's well-researched narrative treats not only the black male leaders of the church, but also women leaders, such as Annie C. Tuggle, as well as notable activities of the church, including music, education, and global evangelism, thus painting a complete picture of African American Churches of Christ. Through scholarship and compelling storytelling, Robinson tells the two-hundred-year tale of how “black believers survived and thrived on the discarded ‘scraps' of America, forging their own identity, fashioning their own lofty ecclesiology and ‘hard' theology, and creating their own papers, lectureships, liturgy, and congregations.” A groundbreaking exploration by a seasoned scholar in American religion, Hard-Fighting Soldiers is sure to become the standard text for anyone researching the African American Churches of Christ. Robrecus Toles is a graduate student in History at Mississippi State University. He currently researches 20th-century African American history. Learn more about your ad choices. Robinson’s well-researched narrative treats not only the black male leaders of the church, but also women leaders, such as Annie C. Tuggle, as well as notable activities of the church, including music, education, and global evangelism, thus painting a complete picture of African American Churches of Christ. Through scholarship and compelling storytelling, Robinson tells the two-hundred-year tale of how “black believers survived and thrived on the discarded ‘scraps’ of America, forging their own identity, fashioning their own lofty ecclesiology and ‘hard’ theology, and creating their own papers, lectureships, liturgy, and congregations.” A groundbreaking exploration by a seasoned scholar in American religion, Hard-Fighting Soldiers is sure to become the standard text for anyone researching the African American Churches of Christ. In The Past Lane - The Podcast About History and Why It Matters
This week at In The Past Lane, the American History podcast, we take a look at a legendary labor uprising by a mysterious group known as the Molly Maguires. They were Irish and Irish American coal miners in Pennsylvania in the 1870s who used vigilante violence to fight back against the powerful and exploitative mine owners. But in the end, the mine owners used their dominance over the political and legal establishment to see to it that 20 men, most of whom were likely innocent, were executed by hanging. Feature Story: The Molly Maguires Hanged On Thursday June 21, 1877 – 143 years ago this week - ten men went to the gallows in Pennsylvania. They were known as Molly Maguires – members of an ultra-secret society that used violence and intimidation in their bitter struggles with powerful mine owners. Arrested for their alleged role in several murders, they were convicted and sentenced to death on the basis of very thin evidence and questionable testimony. “Black Thursday” would long be remembered by residents of the Pennsylvania coal fields as an extraordinary example of anti-labor and anti-Irish prejudice. The story of the Molly Maguires was one very much rooted in two specific places: rural Ireland and the anthracite region of PA. The latter was the main supplier of the nation’s coal, making it a vital component in American’s unfolding industrial revolution. By the 1870s, more than 50,000 miners – more than half of them Irish or Irish American – toiled in the region’s mines. It was hard, brutal work. They worked long hours for low pay in extremely dangerous conditions. Every year cave-ins, floods, and poison gas claimed the lives of hundreds of miners. In one fire alone in 1869, 110 miners were killed. It was in the struggle of these workers to improve their pay, hours, and conditions that the Molly Maguire saga began. Irish immigrants and Irish Americans played key roles in virtually every aspect of the conflict, from the lowliest miner to the most powerful capitalist. Foremost was Franklin B. Gowen, the wealthy Irish American president of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad. Tough and ambitious, he ruthlessly drove his competitors out of business in an effort to dominate the state’s two principle industries, coal and railroads. The only thing he hated more than rival businessmen was organized labor, especially the main miners union, the Workingmen’s Benevolent Association (WBA). Led by an Irish-born man named John Siney, the WBA had won several strikes in the late 1860s and early 1870s that resulted in wage gains and union recognition. Even though he shared an Irish heritage with most of his miners, Franklin Gowan had little sympathy for them. In industrializing America, class interests trumped everything, including ethnicity and culture, and Gowan treated his workers like they were the enemy. Gowan waited for the right moment to attack, and that came in 1873 when the nation plunged into a severe economic depression that lasted until 1877. The hard times hurt his bottom line, but Gowen saw a silver lining: hard times also provided an opportunity to kill the miners’ union. In January 1875, Gowan announced a steep cut in wages, a move quickly followed by the region’s others coal operators. The wage cuts triggered a massive miners’ strike throughout the region that paralyzed coal production. But Gowen and other operators had prepared for the strike by stockpiling huge coal reserves that allowed them to continue to sell coal and wait out the desperate and half-starved striking miners. The “Long Strike,” as it came to be known, was doomed. It ended after five months in June with a total defeat for the workers and the destruction of the Workingmen’s Benevolent Association (WBA). And here’s where rural Ireland figured into the story. Embittered by their loss, a group of Irish miners turned to an old custom – extra-legal justice, or vigilantism. Irish tenant farmers had for centuries used tactics of intimidation, vandalism, and murder to protest landlord abuses, primarily rent hikes or evictions. These types of tactics of resistance by powerless peasants have been called by anthropologist James Scott, “the weapons of the weak.” According to tradition, the original “Molly Maguire” had been a woman who thwarted her landlord’s attempts to evict her during the Famine. Many of the Irish miners in the Pennsylvania coal fields came from counties in Ireland where periodic agrarian vigilantism was a firmly rooted tradition. Molly Maguire activity first arose in the anthracite region in the labor disputes of the early 1860s. But it subsided with the WBA’s success in gaining better wages and conditions for the miners. Now in the wake of the defeat in the Long Strike, the Mollies returned with a vengeance. Between June and September 1875, six people were murdered – all carefully targeted as agents of the mine owners and enemies of the miners. Having destroyed the WBA, Franklin Gowen saw in the return of the Mollies an opportunity to permanently wipe out any miner opposition to his plans to consolidate power and wealth. And so, he unleashed a sweeping campaign against the secret society in which he branded all labor activists “Molly Maguires.” He also accused an Irish fraternal organization known as the Ancient Order of Hibernians of operating as a front for the organization. Eventually over fifty men, women, and children were arrested and indicted for their alleged roles in the Molly Maguire violence and murders. Incredibly, the state of Pennsylvania played almost no role in this process. None other than Franklin Gowan served as the county district attorney and oversaw the investigation and prosecutions. A private company – the Pinkertons – conducted the investigation. A private police force employed by the mining companies carried out the arrests. And Gowan and coal company attorneys conducted the trials. As one historian commented, “The state only provided the courtroom and the hangman.” The first trials began in January 1876. They involved ten men accused of murder and were held in the towns of Mauch Chunk and Pottsville, PA. A vast army of national media descended on the small towns where they wrote dispatches that were uniformly pro-prosecution. In an era of rising hysteria over labor radicalism, and the growing popularity of socialism and anarchism – much of it fueled by sensational stories in the mainstream press - the Molly Maguire story proved irresistible. And the coverage was universally negative. The NYT, for example, wrote about “the snake of Molly Maguire-ism,” while the Philadelphia Inquirer condemned the men as “enemies of social order.” The key witness for the prosecution was yet another Irishman, James McParlan. He was an agent of the infamous Pinkerton Detective Agency, an organization that would be more accurately described as a private army for hire that specialized in labor espionage and strikebreaking. Franklin Gowan had hired the Pinkertons in the early 1870s as part of his masterplan of destroying the WBA. James McParlan had gone under cover to infiltrate the Mollies and gather evidence. And gather he did – or at least he claimed he did during the trials. On the stand he painted a vivid picture of Molly Maguire secrecy, conspiracy, and murder. With this testimony, combined with the fact that Irish Catholics and miners had been excluded from the juries, guilty verdicts were a foregone conclusion. All ten defendants were convicted and sentenced to hang. And in order to send the most powerful message to the region’s mining communities, authorities staged the executions on the same day -- June 21, 1877 – in two locations. Alexander Campbell, Michael Doyle, Edward Kelly, and John Donahue were hanged in Mauch Chuck, while James Boyle, Hugh McGehan, James Carroll, James Roarity, Thomas Duffy, and Thomas Munley met a similar fate in Pottsville. Although the hangings took place behind prison walls, they were nonetheless stages as major spectacles that drew huge crowds and generated international news coverage, nearly all of it condemning the Mollies as murderous monsters who got what they deserved. Still, the Molly Maguire episode was far from over. Ten more miners would be tried, convicted, and executed over the next fifteen months, bringing the total to twenty. While evidence suggests that some of them men were guilty of murder, the great majority of those executed were likely victims of hysteria and a profoundly unjust legal process. In the end, Franklin Gowen and his fellow mine operators succeeded in stamping out the Molly Maguires, but not the violent clashes between labor and capital they represented. For more than a generation following the executions, miners in Pennsylvania and many other states would continue to fight -- both legally and extra-legally -- against oppressive conditions in the mines. And the mine owners, as they did with the Mollies, did their best to dismiss the agitation as foreign radicalism brought to America by misguided immigrants who did not understand the inherent goodness and justice of industrial capitalism. The miners, of course, knew better. They understood that unregulated capitalism, backed by the full weight of the law, the government, and the media, was neither just, nor democratic. It was exploitation, pure and simple. Sources: Anthony Bimba. The Molly Maguires (International Publishers, 1932). Wayne G. Broehl, Jr., The Molly Maguires (Harvard University Press, 1964). America, Racism, and the Gospel Episode 3, Recorded June 16, 2020 The impact of the American Restoration Movement is huge. Individuals like Barton W. Stone, Alexander Campbell, and David Lipscomb are rightly respected for their love for Scripture, which is undoubtedly why their influence is still felt in the church in modern times. But to […]
For this message, Joanne Tramel teaches us about Alexander Campbell's life and legacy that revolutionized the church. During the Protestant Reformation of the early 19th century, Christian denominations were harshly divided, which pushed Alexander Campbell to devote his life to preaching unity through the New Testament.
From the beginning, the church of Christ has held out to the world that the Bible is our only guide. The apostle Peter, the man who first preached the gospel on the day of Pentecost, said, "If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God." Alexander Campbell said, "We speak where the Bible speaks, and are silent where the Bible is silent." And so, it is very important that we know how to study the Bible, so that we can understand it in order for it to guide us from earth to heaven. And that's the topic of today's episode -- "The Bible, Our Only Guide." Host: Alan Caudle
Mark Gallant of the Langley Rivermen leads off this week talking about his hot start to the playoffs and Alexander Campbell checks in from Victoria where the Grizzlies have advanced to Round 2. Wrapping up the show is a look back at the late Cliff Annable as Ronnie Paterson recounts the life and times of the former Surrey Eagles owner.

TRANSLATING AND REVISING SCRIPTURE of As It is Translated Correctly. Part 3. Of chapter 3. Divisions and Sub-Divisions. The division of the Bible into chapters and verses also has a negative result in some instances. The various divisions and sub-divisions of the sacred Scripture into chapters, verses and members of sentences, are of human authority and to be regarded as such. Anciently all the books of the sacred Scriptures were written in one continuous manner–without a break, a chapter or a verse. The division into chapters, that now universally obtains in Europe, derived its origin from Cardinal Cairo, who lived in the twelfth century. The subdivision into verses is of no older date than the middle of the sixteenth century, and was the invention of Robert Stevens. Whatever advantages these divisions may have been in the way of facilitating references, they have so dislocated and broken to pieces the connection, as not only to have given the Scriptures the appearance of a book of proverbs, but have thrown great difficulties in the way of any of them. The punctuation, too, being necessarily dependent on these divisions, is far from accurate; and taken altogether it affords a demonstra-[32]tion that there is no more divinity in the chapters, verses, commas, semi-colons, colons and periods of the inspired writings, than there is in the paper on which they are inscribed, or in the ink by which they are depicted to our view. (Christian Baptism, Alexander Campbell, p. 39)
The Interview: As Joseph Smith reported his visions and revelations designed to restore the New Testament church, another preacher living nearby sought the same goals, but through very different means. Despite the fact that both were Restorationists, each viewed the other as in error. RoseAnn Benson, author of Alexander Campbell and Joseph Smith: 19th-Century Restorationsists explains the similarities and contrasts between Joseph Smith and Alexander Campbell. Joseph reported an open heaven with divine communications and angelic visitations restoring knowledge and priesthood powers. Campbell claims the heavens were closed and only through a strict reading of the New Testament could Christ's church be reestablished in the nineteenth-century. Shortly after the Book of Mormon was printed, critics raised their denunciations, but among them, it appears Alexander Campbell was the first to actually read the volume and write a book review, titling it “Delusions.” Calling Joseph Smith “as ignorant and impudent a knave as ever wrote a book,” Campbell claimed that “there never was a book more evidently written by one set of fingers, nor more certainly conceived in one cranium” than the Book of Mormon. Benson explains how Alexander Campbell’s influence on the earliest months after the church’s organization was greater than any other Christian religious leader, both for good and ill. Many early converts to Mormonism were proselyted from Campbell’s followers including a large number of leaders like Sidney Rigdon and Frederick G. Williams, who became counselors in the First Presidency. Enemies too came from the Campbellite persuasions, such as some who participated in the 1832 tarring and feathering of Joseph and Sidney. The two religious leaders never met, but their lives and pursuits intersected in multiple ways. RoseAnn Benson opens the door on this fascinating, if not short-lived competition. About Our Guest: RoseAnn Benson was an adjunct professor of ancient scripture and Church history and doctrine at Brigham Young University. She has served as the assistant coach for the BYU swim and dive team. Sister Benson first started coaching at St. Petersburg Catholic High School in 1973. She has also coached at San Diego State University, James Madison University, Southern Illinois University, San Jose State University, and at West Florida Lightning Aquatics. RoseAnn Benson attended Brigham Young University where she earned a BA in physical education and minors in history and biology. Additionally, she obtained a K-12 teaching certificate. A few years later, RoseAnn returned to BYU to receive a MS in exercise science with a minor in health science. Later, she went to Southern Illinois where she received a PhD in community and school health, emphasizing in nutrition. She also received an MA at BYU in ancient Near Eastern studies with an emphasis in religious education.

Simply put, restorationism is the approach to Christianity that seeks to compare accepted doctrines and practices against the bible to see if they are valid. Our intention is to recover authentic New Testament Christianity and live it out today. We hold God’s inspired scriptures above traditions, creeds, and clergy. The time is ripe for us Read more about 88: Restorationist Manifesto[…]
