The majority of older adults over the age of 65 are taking 15 to 18 medications annually, which can lead to an increase in hospitalization and also has a cost of nearly $21 billion annually. My guest today is Dr. DeLon Canterbury, founder and CEO of GeriatRx, a telehealth concierge consulting service that focuses on helping overwhelmed caregivers and clinicians prevent their loved ones from being overmedicated. Dr. Canterbury advocates for genetic drug screening, deprescribing, and health cost savings strategies. During the interview, Dr. Canterbury discusses one of his personal challenges - watching his grandmother decline due to medication-related issues. This experience motivated him to create GeriatRx in order to prevent older adults and families from experiencing similar struggles.   We talk about his story and his advocacy in pharmacology, the important changes that need to happen in our healthcare industry, and the concerns with geriatric pharmacology at the moment. We also discuss how we can support family caregivers, what overmedication means, what important questions to ask our healthcare providers, and what we should look for to understand the root cause of some of these issues, as well as where we should start in deprescribing.   He is hopeful as he shares what he has seen in the growing improvement in the space, and how he supports professionals, families, and older adults with his holistic and evidence-based approach. I've had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know Dr. DeLon in person. What a joy it is to have him as a colleague. Dr. DeLon Canterbury shares his caregiving story of how he and his family cared for his grandmother and how, when her mild dementia symptoms intensified, they needed to facilitate her move from her care home to where they lived. It turned out the changes in her symptoms and behaviours were due to a medication she had been given that had an F.D.A. warning to avoid being given to patients with dementia. And it was a pharmacist who identified this. This is just one example of the work pharmacists do to support caregivers and why they are, as DeLon states, the best kept secret for caregivers. This episode's strategy is all about discovering the power of accepting alternatives. By accepting alternatives we learn how to align our path with our family member and work in concert toward the same objectives; and we explore what those objectives may look like - including ultimately focusing on the destination - beginning with the end in mind. We explore when winning is losing and not winning at all, and how we may be able to find happiness in the present moment so that we can maximize memories and minimize regrets... all while winning. We talk about how ego enters the equation as does our own tight grip on our goals; and once we loosen our grip we see there are other alternatives that may provide a win-win outcome along with an improved relationship with our care-recipient. Theresa shares wisdom from David Solie's book: How to Say It to Seniors: Closing the Communication Gap with Our Elders Thank you to this episode's sponsor Geriatrx.

“If the pilgrims have heard that there's none like him in this world, no competition” – an exerpt from Chaucer's CANTERBURY TALES  Today we begin another part of our journey with the first episode with an amazing guest our very own, Dr. DeLon Canterbury. In Chaucer's tale when he talks about the doctor - a member of the middle class. The doctor possesses unparalleled skill and was not afraid to trust the science of the time to use whatever tools he has to care for his patients. Our own doctor, Delon, is a pharmacist who founded GeriatRx, a telehealth, medication management company that focuses on reducing health expenses for caregivers. Our current health care system is a broken, outdated and flawed system that ultimately leaves patients, caregivers, and providers with so many gaps in care that result with confusion and hopelessness from the patient. GeriatRx provides patient empowerment, education, and advocacy that saves our patients and caregivers the headache of navigating a complex health system. They have saved our patients just over a QUARTER OF A MILLION dollars in health care expenses and costs in just their first year. “The Good Physician treats the disease; The GREAT Physician treats the patient who has the disease” – Dr. William Osler   DeLon Canterbury, PharmD, BCGP Member of the African American COVID-19 Task Force (AACT+) President/CEO of GeriatRx, Inc.  cell: 404-484-5092 email: geriatrxinc@gmail.com For  Appointments: www.geriatrx.as.me website: www.geriatrx.org   Follow Delon Canterbury and Geriatrx on Social Media Instagram: https://www.geriatrx.org/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/geriatrx Twitter: https://twitter.com/GeriatRx Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GeriatRxInc

The Golden Mic Podcast w/ The Joy Revolution & Marc Cordon Ep. 57 I'm Not Throwin Away My SHOT! w/ Dr. DeLon Canterbury https://play.goldenmicpodcast.com/0057_canterbury Ding dong! It was the doorbell to the Canterbury's house. Mrs. Canterbury looked at her husband with a "here we go again" look. It was Mildred, DeLon's grandma, trying to find her house. She was in dementia and couldn't recognize faces anymore. But it was the kindness of a pharmacist who discovered that Mildred was prescribed an FDA black box warning medication that had a harmful drug interaction that threatened her life and should never be used in Dementia patients. The pharmacist fought for Mildred's health with her doctor. The doctor eventually agreed to the pharmacist's recommendations In two weeks, Mildred's dementia symptoms dramatically decreased. There was clarity when she spoke. And she would never get lost in her neighborhood again. Up the road, as an undergraduate at Emory University DeLon Canterbury, who was taking Chemistry classes to become a pharmacist, heard about the pharmacist. It only solidified his confidence to become a pharmacist and advocate for his family in need. Now working for a pharmacy chain was not what Dr. DeLon envisioned as it was on the brink of chaos filling 500-700 prescriptions daily, getting written up for trying to help patients, and getting written up again after being called the N-word. Enough was enough, which is why DeLon started Geriatrx.org, a pharmacist consulting company that advocates for the patient, brings costs down, and even helps the caregiver take a breather. At GeriatRx every person is Mildred to DeLon. And it's no surprise that he's appearing on media and being asked to be on Minority COVID Task Forces in the Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina. Hello, My name is Dr. DeLon Canterbury. I currently live in Durham, NC, and was born in Flatbush, Brooklyn, and grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. Thank you David Chametzky for your generous nomination for #PersonBehindThePassion! To me, you are like the big brother I've never had and so willing to help everyone you meet. I truly appreciate this great honor. The passion I am currently pursuing in my life is to protect families by reducing dangerously prescribed medications because our healthcare system is overpriced and ineffective. The impact I intend to make in the world is to prevent another loved one from being put into a nursing home because they were suffering from avoidable side effects from having too many medications because I plan to reduce medication burden, decrease healthcare spending, and work with prescribers to collaboratively care for our patient. I consider myself to be the kind of person who lives to serve and level the playing field for those who are struggling to navigate our health care system. The person that inspired me to pursue this passion is my grandmother, who suffered from worsening dementia due to an inappropriately prescribed medication that caused her to rapidly decline.
