Todos hemos oído hablar algún vez del pánico del año mil, pero nunca ocurrió. La imagen que nos transmitió la literatura romántica de una Europa arrodillada en las iglesias en la noche del 31 de diciembre del 999 esperando el fin del mundo, con los campos sin sembrar y los penitentes flagelándose por las calles, es una invención posterior. Ninguna crónica contemporánea da cuenta de ello y ese silencio de los anales monásticos, siempre atentos a cometas, eclipses y muertes de obispos, habla por sí solo. El artífice de la leyenda fue Jules Michelet, que en 1833 dedicó unas páginas a este pánico medieval, unas páginas magníficas como obra literaria, pero muy flojas como tratado histórico. No era el primero en mirar a esos años con condescendencia. Antes de él la época del cambio de milenio ya había sido pintada de negro durante la reforma protestante y por parte de los ilustrados, que necesitaban una edad media oscura y supersticiosa para exhibirse ellos como los heraldos de un renacimiento cultural y espiritual. El romanticismo decimonónico, que miraba a la edad media con fascinación, se limitó a rematar la faena. La realidad del año mil fue muy distinta a como unos y otros la imaginarían siglos después. La inmensa mayoría de los europeos ignoraba en qué año vivía. En aquel entonces los eruditos, que eran muy pocos, empleaban distintos sistemas para el cómputo de los años, el de la era cristiana era sólo uno de ellos. Pero ninguno de ellos alcanzaba a la mayor parte de la población, que se regía por el curso de las estaciones, las cosechas, la coronación de los reyes y las festividades religiosas. La idea de que el mundo iba a acabar a los mil años procedía de mucho antes, del capítulo 20 del Apocalipsis. Durante el primer cristianismo tuvo cierto predicamento, pero San Agustín y otros padres de la Iglesia zanjaron el asunto interpretando ese número como símbolo del tiempo de la Iglesia, una doctrina que funcionó durante siglos como cortafuegos frente a las fiebres apocalípticas. Eso no fue obstáculo para que los profetas del fin del mundo siguiesen apareciendo, pero siempre fueron episodios locales y de pequeño alcance. Las fuentes que alimentaron el mito son escasas y sospechosas. Rodulfus Glaber, de quien se nutrió Michelet siglos más tarde, escribió sus “Cinco libros de historias" unos treinta años después de los hechos, pero Glaber tenía una propensión natural a los prodigios sobrenaturales que le convierte en un cronista poco fiable. Ninguno de sus coetáneos hicieron la más mínima mención al pánico del cambio de milenio. Nada de esto significa que aquella fuera una época tranquila. Ninguna lo fue, menos aún en un continente tan pobre y fragmentado como la Europa de hace mil años. Aquellas gentes tenían una mentalidad muy diferente a la nuestra, casi cualquier cosa que se salía de lo normal, desde una sequía al paso de un cometa, les parecía una señal divina. Los europeos del siglo X eran supersticiosos y en ocasiones milenaristas. El hecho es que fue precisamente en esa época cuando el oeste de Europa empezó a sacudirse el letargo económico y cultural que la había castigado desde la desaparición del imperio romano de occidente. De forma muy gradual la economía y la población despegaron y fueron dando forma a la Europa medieval que ha llegado hasta nosotros. Lo que no ha desaparecido es el milenarismo, ese sobrevive intacto y revive de tanto en tanto con la misma fuerza que lo hizo en el pasado. When the Thracian known to the Romans as Spartacus wakes up after his failed execution, he discovers he has been sold to Quintus Lentulus Batiatus. The Lanista plans to train him as a gladiator in the hopes of currying the favor of Gaius Claudius Glaber. As it turns out, he needs a new patron to cover his expenses as the drought continues to ravage the area. Glaber, for his part, wants Spartacus to die slowly while bleeding in the arena. Will the three men get anything they want? Erik can't help but notice the comic book nature of the series. It leads to a lot of digressions. The sex and violence Spartacus is known for also quickly makes itself apparent. John Hannah, Manu Bennett, Peter Mensah, and Lucy Lawless prove to be MVPs. Star Andy Whitfield also demonstrates why he had a following before his untimely passing. A discussion of the Stanley Kubrick film also occurs. Justin compares gladiators to professional wrestlers -- and he has the receipts! He also goes into history nerd mode. Erik joins him. The show's style comes in for criticism even as Erik thinks there is a place for it. Latin continues to be a speed bump and The Cleopatra Scale ends up in service a surprising amount.

Comecei a assistir o seriado Spartacus (2010-2013) no Netflix meio “cismado”. Achei inicialmente a estética muito parecida com a do filme 300, de 2006. Outra coisa: havia cenas de ultraviolência e de nudez excessivas, que me levaram a pensar que o seriado precisava disso para se sustentar. Todavia, eu estava errado. O seriado teve quatro temporadas. O ator principal Andy Witfield faleceu, após o final da primeira temporada e teve que ser substituído. Para seu lugar, foi convocado o ator Liam McIntyre, que o sucedeu com a mesma qualidade no papel de Spartacus. A história já foi contada no cinema e é bem popular. A versão mais conhecida é de 1960 e teve Kirk Douglas no papel principal. Durante o Império romano, Spartacus, um escravo da Trácia, rebela-se contra seu dono e cria um exército de escravos, que provoca uma guerra com o Império. Para tentar contornar os problemas que envolvem uma adaptação histórica, os produtores optaram por tomar liberdades para contar o enredo da série. Desta forma, a trama acompanha o gladiador trácio Espártaco (Andy Whitfield) que é sentenciado à morte numa arena após desafiar o comando de Cláudio Glabro (Craig Parker, O Senhor dos Anéis). Como previsto por Espártaco (e ignorado por Glabro), a vila onde vivia o trácio é atacada por bárbaros, e não há nenhum romano ou homem por perto para defendê-la. Num ato de rebeldia Espártaco retorna para casa e salva sua esposa da morte certa, fugindo com ela logo após, temendo a represália de Glaber. Mas esta não demora. Spartacus é capturado e levado como escravo, tal como Sura, sua esposa, que é separada dele e vendida a mercadores sírios. Ao ser jogado à morte na arena para a diversão da plebe, ele surpreende a todos e vence a disputa, matando quatro gladiadores, demonstrando que não irá morrer enquanto não reencontrar sua esposa(Wikipedia). As quatro temporadas receberam nomenclaturas diferentes, mas seguem a mesma história: 1ª – Spartacus: Sangue e Areia (2010) 2ª – Spartacus: Deuses da Arena (2011) 3ª – Spartacus: Vingança (2012) 4ª – Spartacus: A Revolta dos Escravos (2013) Manu Bennet (Crônicas de Shannara) interpretou Crixus e Dustin Claire no papel de Gannicus foram, a meu ver, outros dois destaques no seriado. A segunda temporada é a menor, com apenas seis episódios, e uma “pequel” da história principal, mas é muito boa também. A quarta temporada foi espetacular, trazendo o “núcleo romano” com adversários do mesmo nível (ou até mais capacitados) que os gladiadores. Dou 5 de 5 estrelas.
