13 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men.Vos estis sal terrae. 14 You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid.Vos estis lux mundi. Non potest civitas abscondi supra montem posita, 15 Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house.neque accedunt lucernam, et ponunt eam sub modio, sed super candelabrum, ut luceat omnibus qui in domo sunt. 16 So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. 17 Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. 18 For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled.Amen quippe dico vobis, donec transeat caelum et terra, jota unum aut unus apex non praeteribit a lege, donec omnia fiant. 19 He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men, shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. St Robert was famous throughout Europe as a theologian, and as a strenuous defender of the faith in controversy with the Protestants. He joined the Society of Jesus. and was later made Cardinal and Archbishop of Capua. His numerous writings include works of devotion and instruction, as well as of controversy. He died A.D. 1621, and was canonised and declared Doctor of the Church in 1931.

BONUS EPISODE – Pack your bags for Italy and dust off some clues with us as we dig into our first episode of a new ongoing bonus series – Ancient Venues. For this first episode we take a look at the Amphitheatre of Capua (Anfiteatro Campano), located in modern day Santa Maria Capua Vetere, Italy. We are joined by Valerie Higgins, Associate Professor of Archaeology at The American University of Rome, who guides us through the history of this legendary venue from the Roman Empire. The current amphitheatre sits on the site of two former, smaller amphitheatres, the first of which is presumed to have been built close to 100 B.C. It is second in size only to the Roman Coliseum and is located next to what was the most notable school for gladiators, where Spartacus was from and began his rebellion. We learn all about this incredible venue, historic venue terminology, seating and ticketing, events that were hosted, why large scale events like this took place, concessions and design, and its fascinating hypogeum – located under the arena floor where they staged scenery and warriors for the events. Whether you're a venue nerd or a history buff, or a little of both, you'll love hearing all about this ancient wonder that helped shape the venues we all know and love today.Valerie Higgins: Website | Papers | Book ––––––ADVENTURES IN VENUELANDFollow on Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, or X/TwitterLearn more about Event & Venue Marketing ConferenceMeet our team:Paul Hooper | Co-host, Booking, Branding & MarketingDave Redelberger | Co-host & Guest ResearchMegan Ebeck | Marketing, Design & Digital AdvertisingSamantha Marker | Marketing, Copywriting & PublicityCamille Faulkner | Audio Editing & MixingHave a suggestion for a guest or bonus episode?
You are the salt of the earth. St Robert was famous throughout Europe as a theologian, and as a strenuous defender of the Faith in controversy with Protestants. He joined the Society of Jesus, and was later made Cardinal and Archbishop of Capua. His numerous writings include works of devotion and instruction, as well as of controversy. He died A.D. 1621, and was canonized and declared doctor of the Church in 1931.
So, mom...your last mother's day was in 2015 just three weeks before you died. In those nine years since, you have been dearly missed, thought of often and always toasted at family get-togethers. I still use your recipes and even some of your kitchen tools to cook our meals. And your granddaughter still helps me make cavatelli and cassatelles. My kitchen always smells good. Almost like yours…sometimes. Your memory is just as much a part of this record collection as dad's. Because you were always telling me what you wanted to hear on the living room record player. In this season three premiere, I celebrate Italy's ancient and revered baking traditions by journeying from the historic Colosseum in Rome to the culinary haven of Caiazzo, specifically to dine at the acclaimed Pepe in Grani. This episode is a tribute to the spirit of Italy's ancestral bakers, whose legacy vibrates through the streets and kitchens of the country today. My adventure begins amidst Rome's monumental past, taking inspiration from the city's enduring history, then moves through Italy's picturesque landscapes, passing the ancient home of Spartacus at Capua, to gorgeous Caiazzo. Here, at Pepe in Grani, the focus shifts to experiencing the culinary artistry of Franco Pepe, whose dedication to pizza making reflects a modern interpretation of age-old traditions. As I dine at Pepe in Grani, the episode captures the essence of being a guest in Franco Pepe's world, where each dish tells a story of local ingredients, traditional techniques, and innovation. The restaurant, with its intimate atmosphere and connection to the community, offers a firsthand look at how contemporary culinary practices are deeply intertwined with history. This journey is not just about the flavours savoured at Pepe in Grani but also about sharing great food with our friends and family. Donald Macleod explores the life and music of Ennio MorriconeEnnio Morricone is cited as one of the most experimental and influential composers of all time, undoubtedly recognised as one of the world's greatest ever composers of music for film. A legendary figure who over the course of his career won numerous awards, and accolades, his innovative soundworlds helped to define what film music could be for multiple genres of cinema. Morricone's music extended far beyond the desert landscapes of Spaghetti Westerns, not just to other genres on the Silver Screen, but also into the worlds of pop music, and into the concert hall – where his study and composition of avant garde music gave him the techniques to experiment within his scores for film as well. Over the course of this week, following on the heels of the 2024 Academy Awards, Donald Macleod explores the incredible career of Ennio Morricone, a composer who quite astoundingly wrote over 500 scores for film and television, as well as over 100 classical works.Music Featured:Invenzione The Ecstasy of Gold from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Party Prohibito from I malamondo Musica per undici violini Eduardo di Capua and Alfredo Mazzucchi: O sole mio (arr. Capuan is an adjective that means luxurious. Our word of the day is a toponym, meaning it is a word that takes its origin from a place. In this instance, the place was an ancient Italian city named Capua which was known as a place of great opulence and luxury. Capuan emigrated from this city and arrived in the English language in the 16th century. Here's an example of it in use: When it comes to capuan eateries, my favorite would have to be the one on 17th and Broadway. it's so fancy, even the doggie bags are plated with gold.

Following Cannae, Hannibal descended into the rich agricultural lands of Campania in Magna Graecia. Chafing under Roman rule and eager to reclaim her place as hegemon of southern Italy, the ancient Etruscan city of Capua quickly came to an agreement with Hannibal. In exchange for defecting to the Carthaginian side, Hannibal would allow Capua autonomy, secure her place as mistress of Italy, and allow her to be governed by her own rulers and marshal her own army. A stormy honeymoon followed, with Hannibal soon realizing that he had given too much and received far too little for his new southern Italian "ally"....
