In this episode, I talk to Gretchen Lidicker, former health editor at mindbodygreen and author of CBD Oil Everyday Secrets: A Lifestyle Guide To Hemp-Derived Health and Wellness. We talk all things cannabis – the differing side effects of both THC and CBD, how they interact together, the current and future state of research on this plant, and she gives some critical advice when selecting CBD products if you're interested in trying them. Gretchen has a degree in Biology from the Honors College of Charleston and a masters in physiology with a concentration in complementary and alternative medicine from Georgetown University.   We discuss:   How we have this large yet not often talked about system – the endocannabinoid system – in our bodies that is made up of receptors and endocannabinoids that our body makes on its own. And this system is hugely important when it comes to regulating our body and maintaining homeostasis. How there is still so much we don't know about the cannabis plant and it's effect on our bodies because it's been so difficult to study because it's been classified as a drug for so long. How there are two main compounds of the cannabis plant – THC (which is what gets you high and can have negative effects like anxiety and paranoia but also has positive effects) and CBD which does NOT get you high and has a lot of benefits AND can help temper the effects of THC. How ultimately it's a plant… so one of the undeniable benefits of the legalization of cannabis is the ability to look at it and study it from the lens of plant medicine. So scientists will be looking at the different compounds and identifying which ratios of each are best to treat a variety of conditions or issues. How the effects and the benefits are very interpersonal – depends on how your endocannabinoid receptors are distributed throughout your body, genetics, brain chemistry, brain structure – so you have to find what works for you… but also, you can't really make assumptions about what does/doesn't work for someone else. And lastly – remember that if you're going to try CBD make sure to check the Certificate of Analysis and ensure that it was tested in a third party ISO certified lab.   You can find and follow Gretchen here: Gretchenlidicker.com Instagram @gretchen.amanda     Please SUBSCRIBE, SHARE, RATE, and REVIEW the podcast!   Follow the podcast on Instagram @TheBetterYouPodcast. What we're talking about in this episode The importance of designing the diet that is best for you as an individual  Tools to help you live a full life while managing your autoimmune symptoms A look into the research and success stories behind AIP in many health issues Learn how to calm your body down during a flare and which foods to avoid How to best manage your autoimmune disease with stability and emotional congruency   Episode Summary Angie Alt spent more than a decade being dismissed by doctors and was days away from checking herself into a psychiatric facility only to find out she was battling not one, not two but three autoimmune diseases. Since then Angie has created her the program SAD to AIP in SIX to help others manage and reverse their autoimmune symptoms through diet and lifestyle. Autoimmune diseases are the third most common disease in the US, and leave so many of us feeling confused and without hope. Today Angie is here to share her message of perseverance and provide you with simple ways to transition your diet and lifestyle to an autoimmune protocol.  A science-based elimination and reintroduction diet and lifestyle protocol, AIP focuses on repairing gut health, balancing hormones and regulating the immune system. AIP is all about creating a diet that works best for your body through elimination, reintroduction and lifestyle tools. While it may seem intimidating at first, Angie is the perfect guide to help lead you through this confusing time and take the steps to start reversing your disease.  Are you ready to embrace the scientifically proven ways of the autoimmune protocol and find the management solution to your symptoms? Share your AIP results with us in the comments on the episode page.   Quotes “Within 3 days of adopting AIP, I never needed to take anti-anxiety medications again. It was like the intense mental and emotional strain I had been under just seemed to start melting away.” (17:50) “I think people hear about the Autoimmune Protocol, they hear about AIP and they hear about the elimination phase and they think ‘oh my gosh that's really hard’. But then they forget that the whole point is to get to the point where you start to work on reintroduction.” (31:01) “It's really misleading to say ‘cure’ when you are talking about something that your body can't really unlearn how to do. Instead what I like to say about the Autoimmune Protocol is that it is a tool that can help you manage your autoimmune disease well.” (36:04) “This is meant to focus on those with autoimmune diseases and helping them better manage their diseases, but its really just a great way to have good health no matter what.” (52:01)   Resources Mentioned Autoimmune Wellness Website The Autoimmune Wellness Podcast SAD to AIP in SIX Living Well Collective Website Follow Angie on Instagram Follow Autoimmune Paleo on Instagram | Facebook  The Alternative Autoimmune Cookbook by Angie Alt The Autoimmune Wellness Handbook by Angie Alt and Mickey Trescott EY 113: Gretchen Lidicker  EY 110: Dr. Terry Wahls EY 108: Endometriosis with Dr. Mariza Follow Dr. Mariza’s Virtual Book Club on Facebook | Instagram   Other Resources: The Essential Oils Hormone Solution by Dr. Mariza Check out the full show notes page Keep up with everything Dr. Mariza Follow Dr. Mariza on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube
