quick update on the podcast and potential plans for the future
After a lot of back-and-forth, I've decided to step away from the podcast for a bit. I feel a strong pull to simplify my life and get quieter, so I'm going to practice what I preach and listen to myself. Thank you all for your support! I hope to be back with a more intentional show. In the meantime, please take the time you would normally listen to this show and use it as quality, quiet, alone time with yourself!

In this episode, we talk about the various forms of trauma, how it affects us and our brains, and look at a powerful treatment therapy to heal the negative impacts of trauma. Amy Pope-Latham is a licensed clinical social worker with extensive experience in treating children, adolescents, adults, and families. She received an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Stony Brook University and a Master's degree in Social Work from Stony Brook University's School of Medicine and Social Welfare. In this episode, we discuss: · How our minds – like our bodies – are actually set up to heal themselves. · The different approaches to help reconnect our mind and our body and remove the continuous pain from trauma. · How EMDR is a tool to access our limbic system, where we store - and essentially hide – our physical feelings, and revisit and process traumatic experiences in a safe space. · Our drive for connection and how that impacts how we react to trauma. · How important it is to recognize that we are all in process and wherever you are in that process is exactly where you need to be. In this episode, we discuss equine therapy and the incredible ability horses have to sense what's going on inside us and help us work through whatever is blocking us from a stronger sense of self. Dr. Ashley Dial (formerly Dr. Thompson) received her PhD in Depth Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute of Carpinteria, CA. Unlike traditional Western psychology, Depth Psychology does not seek to label problems or prescribe quick fix solutions, instead it approaches mental health issues with compassion, love, empathy, and creates consciousness around what troubles us. Dr. Dial's research and studies on the horse-human relationship have afforded her special insight into the psychological elements involved in equine therapies. In addition to her in-depth studies and education, Dr. Dial's experience working on horse ranches gave her the advantage of complete immersion into the understanding of horses. Combining her knowledge of Depth Psychology and Trans-species Psychology, Dr. Dial has developed a unique therapeutic model that offers a refreshing and real approach to modern day issues. Dr. Dial's therapeutic technique is personable, honest, and organic. Working from a Jungian perspective of mental health, the entirety of the individual is taken into consideration and worked with in-depth. As the goal of any mental health treatment model should be, Dr. Dial engages clients with the expectation that whatever issues they may have, their treatment will be specific and result oriented. In this episode, we discuss: · Her very interesting story of why she first started working with horses. · What depth psychology is and how it differs from traditional psychology. · The significance and the insight we can gain from our dreams. · The energetic conversations that are happening alongside our actual conversations. · The intuitive nature of horses and how they can sense what's going on in us. · How and why trans-species therapy can be an easier way to work through traumas and issues than traditional therapy. · How working with horses can help with everything from trauma, depression, and grief to everyday stressors and anxiety. Casey Castro is a mother of four, yogi, and has a passion for helping others to grow and reach their potential. Casey has been a yoga practitioner for over 20 years when a debilitating knee injury left her unable to continue with ballet and martial arts. Since then her practice has evolved with her life. "Moving my body has always been a priority, and much like the seasons, my practice changes as my life changes. When I teach yoga, I bring a frankness to it. I make it real. I make it accessible. We can't all be Instagram yogis." This mentality is what drives Sydney Yoga Collective and The Prenatal Yoga Studio to be some of the most popular studios for real people, wearing real clothes, that show up to feel good. In this episode, we discuss how the Enneagram system can help us understand the lens through which we see the world – the motivators that drive us, the fears we're trying to avoid, and the needs we are seeking to be met. Vrin Rao is an Enneagram Coach and Meditation Teacher. She works with women and those who identify with the female energy to build strong and healthy relationships with themselves and others. She does this by using the personality framework of the Enneagram to help others identify their core motivations which are directly influenced by each of our specific needs and fears. It is often our unconscious needs and fears that have the potential to spill out in interactions we have with ourselves and others in both the personal and professional settings. By understanding what we are driven by, we develop greater awareness, understanding, and acceptance of ourselves and others. Vrin is also a meditation teacher and a life-long practitioner of nada yoga (the yoga of sound), japa yoga (the yoga of meditative mantra recitation) and kirtan yoga. She is also well-versed in tantra, chakra meditation, swara yoga (the science of the breath) and yoga nidra (psychic sleep). She offers 1:1 Enneagram Consultations and ongoing coaching for those interested in diving deep into understanding their core motivations, their unique gifts, and how to work with the shadows we all battle within. In this episode, we discuss: · How her life switched from science to coaching and how she found the Enneagram system. · What the Enneagram system teaches us about ourselves and how it can be applied in our lives. · The value of understanding your own type and seeing and understanding that the people in your life are different types · The three categories the different types fall into – body, heart, and mind – and how we need all of them to grow. · How there is a spectrum of consciousness within each type determined by whether we are run by our egos or self-awareness. · The ego and it's role and interaction with the different types. · And then we briefly go through each of the nine types and discuss what they look like on a higher level of consciousness and what they look like on a lower level of consciousness. At only seven years old, Sydney Collier was diagnosed with an extremely rare condition. In this episode, she shares her incredible story of not letting anything get in the way of accomplishing her goals, and how she keeps an unbelievably positive attitude throughout every step of her journey. Sydney Collier started riding horses at the age of seven and instantly fell in love. Shortly after she began riding, a routine vision screening changed her life in ways she could not have imagined. She was diagnosed with the rare Wyburn-Mason Syndrome, a life-threatening condition that causes arteries and veins to grow together causing vascular malformations (AVMs) inside her brain. Because of their location deep in her brain, her AVMs could not be easily removed. The rarity of Wyburn-Mason Syndrome meant few options were available for treatment. Sydney's condition quickly started affecting her vision and the control of her left side. Over the course of eight years, she endured a series of experimental treatments including CyberKnife radiation, blood vessel embolization, and brain surgery. During a risky brain surgery in 2009, she suffered a devastating and massive stroke. Despite this setback, she entered a rehabilitation center and was determined to get out of her wheelchair and return to the sport of riding. In 2010, she attended the World Equestrian Games as a spectator and immediately fell in love with Para-Dressage. With a renewed dedication to returning to riding at a high-performance level, Sydney set out to learn the sport of Para-Dressage. At age 16, she earned a spot on the US Para-Dressage team and was the youngest competitor at the 2014 World Equestrian Games in France. At age 18, she won the 2016 US Para-dressage National Championships and became the youngest member in the equestrian portion of the 2016 Paralympics in Rio as a part of Team USA. She placed 7th overall in the highly competitive para-dressage grade 1B. She has dedicated her life to service and maintains a busy schedule combining athletic, equestrian training, guest speaking, volunteering, babysitting, and giving riding demonstrations at a variety of events. She is also attending DeVry University on an Olympic Scholarship, majoring in communications. Alongside these activities, she continues training to earn a place on 2021 Tokoyo Para-Dressage Team and help the USA stand on the medal podium. In this episode, we discuss: · Her story of being diagnosed at a young age with an extremely rare condition. · The role horseback riding played in her determination to rehab after her surgeries and the mental and emotional escape it provided from – as she says – “all the medical mumbo jumbo.” · How finding Para-Dressage changed her life and her plans for her future. · The importance and power of setting big goals no matter what obstacle you have in your life. · Reframing everything that life throws you as a positive. · How truly supporting people means not putting ceilings on them and even allowing them to fail. · The importance of celebrating all the small goals along the way to big goals. · The incredibly special relationship she has with her horse and the power of the horse-human connection. · The spiritual beliefs that help her maintain her positive mindset. · And her advice on how we can all believe in ourselves a little bit more so we can go after our big goals. Toby's story is incredible, certainly unique, and ultimately super inspiring, as she embodies the importance of perspective and the ability to recreate your life no matter how badly it has fallen apart. At 46, Toby founded the Safe Harbor Prison Dog program at Lansing Correctional Facility in Kansas. Nearly two years later, Toby abandoned herself and her life after falling in love with a handsome younger man who was doing life for murder. Together, on the run after a sensational prison escape, their honeymoon ended with a crash at a hundred miles per hour, chased into a tree by a large ensemble of law enforcement. Toby's dive took her to the penal side of prison bars where she found the time and liberation to begin a transformation. A decade later, Toby has achieved two master's degrees, completed her memoir, acquired literary agency, and sold the movie rights to her story. Publication is expected soon. Her story has been covered by America's Most Wanted, the Wall Street Journal, Anderson Cooper, and more. Toby, better known as the Dog Lady of Lansing Prison, inspires women to break free. In this episode, we discuss: · How busyness affects our ability to gauge our true happiness. · How difficult it is to stand up for and do the things in life that we want to. · The importance of a having victor mindset over a victim mindset when bad things happen. · How rock bottom can be a lifechanging blessing. · The power of journaling to overcome guilt and shame. · Letting go of a love gone wrong.
