Later, he partnered with Karina, his now-wife, to co-create and help him bring it to market. Their desire to solve a simple problem with an innovative, yet easy-to-use solution led to Hang-O-Matic being a household and DIY essential. Together, they've been incredibly successful at landing their invention in retailers everywhere, including Home Depot, Hobby Lobby, Bed Bath & Beyond, Home Depot, Hobby Lobby, Menards, Target, The Grommet, and more. The problem of no one hanging their artwork and shelves because it's inconvenient and difficult is a pervasive one — it's even a common meme on social media sites like Instagram. In this interview, Karina opens up about their invention journey and how they commercialized the Hang-O-Matic. First they ventured, and then they licensed. They never took investors. Karina says that she will "never do this again" because of the difficulty involved. She describes how Shark Tank mislead them into believing that if you have a large purchase order, you can just go to the bank with it. Initially, Bed Bath & Beyond wanted to put their invention in 200 stores, but then it became all of their stores. Then they got a second huge purchase order from Joanne's — a seriously great problem, but a problem nonetheless, because floating an order that large requires serious capital! The banks said no. Karina also explains how they found a licensee and why they needed one. They got a licensing deal last April. Incredible! Their licensee took on all the responsibilities of operations and inventory. Before becoming a mom to twins, I had a corporate career as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Behavioral Analyst and considered myself a very social person. Once the twins arrived, my world changed. For various reasons, my husband and I decided I would stay home with the kids. This decision excited and terrified me at the same time. Madison and White was founded by Kamela Hurley at the start of 2015. After a disaster DIY hair experiment, she was at a local beauty supply store where she found satin pillowcases for sale. One touch of the cheap satin pillowcases and she knew she could do better. On impulse, she began research on textiles, benefits, and created samples based on that research. The Hang-O-Matic was developed by the husband and wife team of Jared and Karina Rabin. Rewind to 2008 when Jared and Karina were first time homeowners and facing a task that every homeowner, decorator, handyman and even college students have faced at one time or another. As Karina was decorating her new home office, the seemingly simple task of hanging a shelf straight on a wall proved to be anything but. After making several trips to the hardware store and patching and repainting the wall, the shelf was finally up and proudly displaying an irreplaceable snow globe she received from her in-laws, which was customized to play their wedding song from the 70’s. Needless to say, it had immense sentimental value. Before she could finish decorating, the snow globe fell, shattered to pieces, and water spilled everywhere. The shelf was tilted by only a fraction of an inch. It was then, that Jared remembered a picture hanging tool he had invented in college. He dusted off the first prototype of the Hang-O-Matic and hung the shelf perfectly level in one try. This tool was just too good to keep to themselves, they had to share it with the world. With Jared’s clever design and Karina’s vision for success, the Hang-O-Matic was born and together this couple set out to pursue their American Dream and make your life a little easier along the way.
