Alia Joy is an author who believes the darkness is illuminated when we grasp each other's hand and walk into the night together. She writes poignantly about her life with bipolar disorder as well as grief, faith, marriage, poverty, race, embodiment, and keeping fluent in the language of hope. God's power is made perfect in your weakness. We know the Bible verse, but most of us would rather run from weakness than embrace it. Years ago, Alia might have told you the same. She never expected to write a book about weakness, nor did she expect to wrestle with mental illness, but this journey has put her on a path to be a voice for the hurting, the broken, and the lonely. Her new book Glorious Weakness: Discovering God in All We Lack is meeting people in their place of need and giving them hope that they are not alone. There were so many incredible (and challenging) takeaways from this conversation with Alia. First, she offers a gentle reminder that sometimes our dreams don't include a checklist of things to do. In fact, we should probably question whether results are really the point of any dream. Is God asking you for results or is He asking you for obedience? Alia provides an excellent biblical reminder not to fret, worry about, or covet what someone else has. This is especially true when you encounter others who are pursuing a dream that feels very similar to yours. Guess what? That's not about you. If you feel you can celebrate someone who has a similar dream, then do so. But if you can't without fretting, then unfollow, scroll past, and ask God to help you let go of those feelings. In this episode, you'll also discover the value of finding a quiet place to release the noise of the world. Alia talks about how there can be too much of a good thing (like reading all the books or, for me, attending every last webinar so I can make up for what I think I lack in knowledge). If you're currently feeling alone in your struggles or the pursuit of your God-shaped dream, I promise you, you're not! I hope you'll join us over in the Devoted Dreamers Insiders Facebook Group and get to know some fellow dreamers. We'd love to meet and encourage you toward Christ. Heather Boersma says the dream she is pursuing today wasn't on her radar two decades ago when a pastor prayed it over her. Since then it has been a journey of learning, trusting and listening to God, faltering, and then remembering to trust and listen to Him again. In this episode she talks about the importance of intimacy with God, especially if you're struggling to make progress or looking for a road map with next steps toward your dream. What she shares will open your eyes to the significance of resting and trusting in Jesus. You'll also hear the best reason NOT to measure success via your results but rather in your obedience to God. She'll teach us about the importance of our mindset as well as the power of agreeing with the truth God speaks over you through His word and not the lies of the enemy. Heather Boersma is a speaker, author and life coach who loves to adventure with her husband Alex and their three kids Cohen, Claire and Byron. She has been speaking to teen girls and women for the past 12 years in Canada and the USA and recently published her second book, "Letters from a Big Sister". Our guest today is Heather Boersman, a speaker, author and life coach who loves to adventure with her husband Alex and their three kids Cohen, Claire and Byron. She has been speaking to teen girls and women for the past 12 years in Canada and the USA. She has recently published her second book, Letters from a Big Sister, where she collaborated with other authors like Jamie Ivey, Jessica Honegger who was on our show and Jenna Kutcher to share letters of advice they would write to their younger self. Today we talk about what we would say to our younger self now. All the struggles we went through as teens and how sometimes those insecurities and struggles follow us into adulthood. We discuss the cycles that all of us deal with when it comes to how we find our worth and significance. How can we remind ourselves daily that we are worthy and significant. We talk about the difference between rest and striving. She gives us her red flags for when she needs rest and needs to stop striving. She teaches us ways to see our own red flags. We talk about identity and what we are all searching for, how we search for worth in all the wrong places. Who am I? Am I accepted? Am I worthy? She talks about her struggles with bullying and how those struggles inspired her to write a book for young girls, as well as living her life on behalf of others to know they are valuable and worthy. She talks about her struggles with perfectionism and now leading with vulnerability. Some quotes I loved: “Leading with Vulnerability creates connection.” “I am not moving forward unless it’s with TEAM.” We also talk about online time for teens and adults. We talk about safeguards you can create as parents for your child as they start to engage on social media. “You don’t have to work for love and significance, you can LIVE from love and value, just because God dreamt you up. Just because YOU are!” It’s the difference between walking into a room and saying, “Here I am”, and instead staying,” There you are.” “Who can I find today that I can bless and hear their story?” “I focus on finding others who need someone to listen.” “Live from LOVE and not FOR love.” “You actually have to love yourself in order to love others.” Connect with Heather. https://www.heatherboersma.com Instagram:Heatherboersma Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/heather.boersma.3 Get Heather’s book: Letters From A Big Sister

My guest today is Heather Boersma. Heather is an author and speaker of 12 years as well as a mom of 3. In this episode, we’re talking about working FROM love instead of FOR love and the difference that subtle shift in meaning has for our lives and souls. -------------------------------------- I don’t know about you but Summer has not exactly been the restful, relaxing time I thought it would. Between selling a business and growing two others while raising two kids and trying to be “fun mom” all summer, I’m feeling worn out and weary from the effort it all requires. This episode and conversation came at such a timely moment for me and my own heart, and has been balm to my weary soul. A poignant reminder that I must not revert back to my default of working for love and approval and acceptance from myself, others or God. Heather has a good word for all women today - that you are already loved and accepted by God if you are His, and that our work can stem out of a place of confidence in whose we are instead of trying to prove who we are.
