State Senator Clarence Lam who represents Maryland's District 12 in the General Assembly joins Midday to discuss a recent murder by a youth offender in Howard County. On October 9, a man was shot to death in a parking lot at a Columbia office building. Howard County police arrested a 17-year-old student at Howard High School, and a 14-year-old from Severn in connection with the murder. When the 17-year-old was arrested at school, a ghost gun was found in his backpack, and school officials learned only then that the young man was under the supervision of the Department of Juvenile Services. Senator Lam explains the juvenile justice reform laws passed in the General Assembly and the changes to school policies that have been implemented since this murder.Email us at midday@wypr.org, tweet us: @MiddayWYPR, or call us at 410-662-8780.

This week Anthuan Maybank returns to discuss how in-the-moment adversity requires long-term mindset strategies. Listen in as Anthuan and I discuss how to elevate yourself to the level of your own expectations, how he learned to trust himself after an injury, and the common mistake of letting an adversity become your ceiling. Olympic gold medalist Anthuan Maybank is hard to keep up with both on and off the track. He has proven his drive, adaptability, and time management skills in many ways over the course of his career, but his greatest strength lies in his ability to consistently motivate those around him. His dedication to track and field elevated him to the world stage, winning gold at the 1995 World University Games in the 200 meter dash and 4x400 meter relay. He then took home gold again at the 1996 Olympic Games in the 4x400 meter relay. Despite a packed schedule, Anthuan has not only concentrated on his own personal goals but has continually strived to improve the communities around him. He serves as the co-chair of the Marketing Committee for the National Academy of Finance benefiting youth college preparation at Howard High School. Through his business, Champion Body Strength Training, he has created a program to motivate youth called Building Outgoing Dynamic Youth (BODY). Furthermore, he leads week-long track programs for underprivileged youth at the St. Croix International Coaching Seminar and Clinic in the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Native Vision Sports and Life Skills Camp on the Navaho Reservation in Farmington, New Mexico. Listen in as Anthuan and I discuss athletics as a part of the identity, using sports to create opportunities as a youth, holding yourself accountable to your goals, and the lessons he learned as an Olympic athlete that still serve him today. In this deep and at times shocking episode of The Educator Podcast: Perspectives, I interview Union Representative and veteran high school Health and PE teacher Josh McGoun. We dive in and discuss the inexcusable disrespect the teaching profession has faced in America, the critical role teachers' unions play in public schools and the lives of teachers, the teacher retention crisis that is currently plaguing American public schools, the dramatic changes to the teaching of Health and PE in the past two decades, the effects of Covid on students, teachers, and education, and much more. This episode is a must-listen to anyone currently working or considering working in a public school, as well as anyone who is interested in improving the public school system in America, and provides a number of important action-items educators and even the everyday public can take to help advocate for and improve public education. Josh explains the central role teachers' unions play in American education and how their benefits are widely unknown or misunderstood, the dire need to address the teacher retention crisis – 47% of teachers leave the profession in the first few years, according to his research – and the top three reasons why new teachers resign. He also explains just how dramatically the Health and PE field has changed, as long gone are the days of gym teachers leading dodgeball games just to pass the time that most of us grew up with. Josh loathes the term “gym teacher”, as now the field has radically professionalized to focus on student learning, teaching healthy habits, and discussing complex and often emotionally sensitive topics. We also discuss the Covid crisis and much more in this wide-ranging, and at times painful, but ultimately inspiring interview.
