Oftentimes, you get so caught up in the grind of editing a podcast, you would be forgiven for overlooking the resounding impact that flows from an admittedly incredible conversation with a powerfully genuine soul. This is how I felt as I dove back my conversation with today's amazing guest. There's no sugarcoating it: Kyle Carnohan is a ferocious BEAST of an individual. With a passion for life and incredible dedication to his wife, children, fitness, business and community, his is a journey of palpable resilience, sacrifice, grit and earth-shaking commitment. But what has personally humbled me in my exposure to Kyle's message is his relentless mission to help Men rise up to their often neglected potential in all aspects of their lives. Through his immensely successful Super Human Fathers transformation program, Kyle coaches fathers to become the healthiest versions of themselves with a no judgement attitude and a passion for service. Losing it all, hitting the very definition of rock bottom, married with 4 kids, and having lived to tell the tale, he may have the heart to give you grace but not the time for your excuses. He believes wholeheartedly that we, as Men, can and should dedicate ourselves to being the solid foundation on which our marriage, family, health and business rests. Anything less than this noble endeavor is shying away from our purpose. On this episode, prepare to be shaken to your core as Kyle shares his gut-punching insights on being brutally honest with where you are, having the right accountability partner, having the hard conversations with your spouse, setting the standard for your children, the importance of brotherhood among Men...and so much more. You can connect with Kyle via his various presences such as Super Human Fathers & Instagram(@superhumanfathers). #StayAwesome ----------- Thoughts on the show? We'd love to hear from you. Allegra Moet Brantly is an entrepreneur, speaker, podcaster and founder with the kind of zeroed-in focus that never fails to inspire us always aim higher when it comes to setting goals. She remains an example of incredible drive to achieve as well as an unshakeable confidence to execute on her vision. But don't be fooled - she didn't start out that way. By her own admission, Allegra's time in her early 20s was spent more on climbing the corporate ladder and curating her LinkedIn profile than managing her finances. Then, even though she was making a great salary, she was still living paycheck-to-paycheck...and she had no real savings or investments. Not to throw in the towel, like so many do, and becoming disillusioned with the corporate world, she committed to putting in the work towards changing her ways and, slowly but surely, embarked on the painstaking and lonely overhaul of her money. She eventually grew her net worth from -$18K to $1.1M. Not too shabby. I love it when someone takes the lessons that life and circumstances taught them along the way and not only thrives as a result, but also chooses to generously pay it forward by sharing the wealth of knowledge acquired. Which is why she set her sights on a simple, focused mission: to lead 1 million women to $1 million in net worth so more women can achieve financial freedom in their lifetime. To do so, she founded Factora Wealth, an online course & community that educates and empowers women to build real wealth, together. It was a true honor connecting with an individual with such a powerful message to share and a genuine mission to conquer. And I'm here for it. On this episode, Allegra shares some wisdom from one of the most important people in her life, the importance of a solid financial education, our emotional relationship with money...and so much more. You can connect with Allegra via LinkedIn, Instagram or the Factora Wealth website. Be sure to check out and show love by listening/rating the Coffee & Coin podcast where Allegra welcomes an amazing roster of incredible and accomplished women on the same mission to empower more women towards achieving financial freedom. ----------- Thoughts on the show? Our wonderful guest today is straight-talking, fun-loving, rule-breaking, mess-making, sometimes cussing but always enjoyable spirit, Jodie King, On top of being an incredibly talented and established artist, with a career spanning over 20 years, Jodie is also a professional educator, speaker, entrepreneur, podcaster and mother with her work having been featured in notable publications such as Forbes, Entrepreneur magazine and Vogue. Jodie is a bonafide creative badass. A true avalanche of incredible energy and thoughtful wisdom when it comes to tapping into our inner creative and shamelessly letting it out. She is all too familiar with the weird feeling you get with as a day-to-day number-cruncher who has that itch to paint, sing, write, make pottery...but backs away from it thinking it's not for them. To put in her own words "It takes a special kind of courage to turn ourselves inside out and show it to the world." Jodie's approach with helping her clients create what she calls "Honest Art" is very well aligned with her conviction that the “starving artist” idea is complete nonsense. She believes artists can grow in their creative field of choice and have their passion become a profitable, sustainable business. I had such a fun sharing space with Jodie and getting to know more about her work and vision. This conversation did hit a really honest nerve where I am clearly reminded of the importance of staying true to your authentic self. And while she does not negate the fact that even though this does take some work on yourself, you should feel safe in realizing that it is not that complicated should you choose to accept the individual singular talent that lies within you. On this episode, Jodie dishes out the importance of recognizing your creative urges and fueling the, as they happen, not backing down on your authentic self, how knowing yourself is a keystone to your success and so much more. Empathy is defined as the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. I came across my next guest's content and mission through a wonderful podcast interview she gave on the topic. Anita Nowak is an empathy expert, author, award-winning educator, international speaker, podcaster and certified coach. Her extensive work revolves around fostering empathy in individuals and organizations, recognizing that true understanding and connection require more than just feeling emotions; it involves cognitive empathy, which allows us to understand how others think and feel. She has committed herself towards serving values-driven organizations dedicated to social impact and her incredible resume will attest to that. She is the founder of Purposeful Empathy by Design, a global advisory firm that helps purpose-driven organizations create cultures of empathy and social impact. In April 2023, she published the incredibly impactful book, Purposeful Empathy: Tapping Our Hidden Superpower for Personal, Organizational, and Social Change, which you should definitely check out. She also the host of the wildly successful Purposeful Empathy podcast, available on all major podcast platforms. Given her incredibly accomplished career and thought-provoking insights on the matter, I loved how approachable and down-to-earth she boiled down something that she emphasizes should be a guiding compass for us all, not just as leaders or organizations, but as a people. On this episode, Anita teaches us about the importance of being truly intentional when choosing to empathize with others, brings us much needed clarity in differentiating sympathy versus empathy, how to be more empathetic leaders...and so much more. Sometimes you just need a good dose of solid ass-kicking to get you going. In case you haven't heard me say it enough or maybe you might be new here, here's a reminder : this thing called life is not for the lazy, the weak or fans of excuses. Simply put, if you want to really succeed, you are going to have to get used to the fact that whatever you want is going to require you to put in an incredible amount of hard work, consistency, focus and intent. If do those few simple things, it's impossible for you not to execute on your goals. These are but a few of the many lessons my next guest has learned and applied given his incredible and courageous journey. Pedro Meneses was born and raised in Guatemala City. From a very young age, he always showed signs of independence, leadership, and great ambition. Thirsty for answers to his deepest desires and goals, when he turned 25, he decided to leave his native country, his family, and everything he knew to pursue a greater dream, purpose, and career as an entrepreneur. Pedro is a natural-born leader, driven by passion, and always committed to delivering excellence to everyone he helps and surrounds himself with. He is best known for being someone bold in his actions and always speaking and leading with the truth. Beyond his love for helping others, he also runs a successful Real Estate Business in Dallas, Texas, alongside his beautiful wife, Kayla, where they dedicate themselves to helping others build wealth through Real Estate. He is also the owner and founder of The Way Of The Modern Beast, a movement and online store to help men go from good to great through self-care and self-mastery. He is also the host of the Top-Rated Podcast for Entrepreneurs, Chronicles Of A Modern Beast, which you should definitely go check out and have a listen. On this impactful episode, which I purposely delayed releasing, due to a personal news that he was not ready to share at the time of recording, Pedro pulls no punches and knocks us upside the head with his frank, heartfelt and authentic message on why we owe it to our unborn children to be the best version of ourselves, how you have to have a relentless faith in yourself in order to succeed, how the toxic people in our lives are robbing us of our purpose ... and some much more. My conversation with Aaron Machbitz was something out of a storybook. I had started listening to his podcast and after the first 2 or 3 episodes, I was hooked. Simply because I felt through his words, passion, empathy and heart that this incredible gentleman had really tapped into what we so often seek to find - which is our individual sense of personal truth and purpose. Aaron is a dedicated soul with a passion for helping and bringing smiles to people. A former Division 1 Baseball Player and Professional Wrestler in his own right, Aaron has never been one to shy away from taking in new experiences and reinventing himself in the process. However, in his own words, Mental Health is very much at the core of everything he does as he has made it his mission to facilitate deeper connections within ourselves while integrating different communities and facilitating real genuine connection. Aaron has a deeply rooted sense of the human experience. His many travels and interactions coupled with a host of personal circumstances, some quite tragic, have shaped an individual with laser-focused duty to lift as many people up as he can though his message and will to serve. He is the host of amazing Something For Everybody podcast where, having gone on a lifesaving journey to learn everything about mental health, well-being and realizing our true potential, he made his goal through his show to make those who listen feel more loved and connected through sharing stories. He is also the founder of You Are Loved, a non-profit mental health organization dedicated to spreading awareness, breaking the stigma, presenting hope and being a beacon of love to all people living with mental health conditions. On this episode, Aaron schools me on why baseball is such a big deal to him, getting back when your entire world comes crashing down, not letting the darkness take over you, being a source for good, loving ourselves and so much more. In an age where everyone is seemingly trying to stand out given the onslaught of trends, memes and clickbait that most of us are more than used to, how exactly does one manage to make themselves known in the sea of noise and distraction? Marketing and self-promotion are not a bad thing. What we need to remember is that there are tactics and strategies that one can adopt which can effectively serve both your business as well as your personal brand. Gerard Tam is the visionary founder and talented director of Gerard Media, a truly kick-ass video production and digital marketing strategy firm specializing in bold and impactful storytelling that truly gives business owners an unfair advantage over the competition. It took a fateful event during his early years growing up in Hong Kong on a random day fueling his love of skateboarding that Gerry would find that initial spark. A spark that would not only leave a lasting impression, he'll tell you the story himself, but would anchor his belief that there is great responsibility in capturing a moment of video, however fleeting. We all have a story. Stories are meant to be told. And Gerry has made it his mission and purpose to tell these in a way that is not only authentic but resonating beyond just talking about one's product or service. As a creator, storyteller and educator, his long-time expertise collaborating with a gallery of established brands has given him the knowledgeable insight to share his many lessons learned along the way. On this episode, Gerry shares his origin story on how video made a lasting impact on his life, the power of a story, figuring out your guiding compass, Social Media Dos and Donts and so much more. Asd transparent as I've been, I always shied away from bring up Religion on this show. Reason being it is such a hot button issue, I'd basically decided it was going to be one the few topics I would avoid bringing up. But something happened this year - been dealing with a lot of particular issues, from my personal health, to family emergencies, to professional shifts and everything in between. Overwhelm has really done a number on me on many fronts. Found myself doing a lot of soul searching of sorts and it is in conversation with my good friend Phil, that the subject of our religious upbringing came up as we were reminiscing about growing up in Haiti and how church was an non-negotiable. In my admitting that I was feeling a bit "lost" in how I, as husband and father, was leading and caring my family, he suggested and invited me to participate in the Faithful Men's Fellowship bible study group. In a sense of vulnerability and willingness to open my heart to reconnecting with my faith, I got on the Zoom call and got acquainted with a group of well-meaning, like-minded, incredibly open-hearted men who welcomed me with respect, truth and immense compassion. As the leader and main speaker of the group, Pastor Michael Winfrey caught my eye as a no-holds barred, casual, insightful voice of wisdom and guidance that speaks to us from a place of experience and raw truth. Which is why I wanted to have him on the show, as my first impression was such a resonating one. Felt like showing some gratitude and letting you guys know a bit more about the group and mission. You can connect with Pastor Mike on Facebook or ...you're welcome to join the group for the weekly Saturday prayer call. Oftentimes, we think things 'JUST' happen. I don't subscribe to that. Particular circumstances not withstanding, you DO have the ability to forge the outcome you seek. There's a process to everything. Don't train? You will struggle. Train well? You will reap the benefits. Leave things up to chance. Watch The Universe do its thing. Stay focused. Stay disciplined. And when things occasionally go sideways - learn and adjust accordingly. #StayAwesome #ATATribe ----------- Connect with us // Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/awakentheawesome Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/atapodcast Telegram : https://t.me/atapodcast Email : awakentheawesome@gmail.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Our full back catalog of episodes is also available on your favourite platforms : Apple Podcasts : https://apple.co/3bcWAWX Spotify : https://spoti.fi/3rZOA1B Amazon(Alexa) : https://tinyurl.com/enk2dkk4
Little know fact - when I started numbering these episodes, I had this grand vision that I would always use three digits to play a mind-trick on myself and aim for as many episodes as possible....999 is still quite a ways off ...but here we are...episode 200. It is such an incredible honour to be able to share today's episode with you all. I thought it'd be a good opportunity to go back to the basics and bring on someone who is not only a good friend and avid supporter of the show, but is always a genuine treat to have on given his consistently thought-provoking insights and terrific energy. Tanguy Exumé is an individual you are immensely fortunate to know. And if he's someone you're lucky enough to call a 'brother', you've got it made. Indeed, his incredible heart beats to the tune of an uncommon spirit. One whose singular journey has been shaped by circumstances, adventures, discoveries, experiences, and many teachings. A born storyteller, and a damn good one at that, Tanguy has continuously demonstrated how leaning into one's gift can reveal so much about ourselves : educator, teacher, author, spoken-word artist, poet...and more recently, a seasoned podcaster. Through his impressive body of work, and as the host of the impactful Teach Reach podcast, a podcast exploring human connections through shared stories, Tanguy carry us through a journey of emotion and truth from which we cannot walk away unaffected. He aims to bring us into his world, through journeys of laughter, leisure, longings, and sometimes great sorrow. And we can't help but thank him for it. On this candid and heartfelt conversation between longtime friends, Tanguy and I touch on the concepts on vulnerability and identity, finding one's place in the world, having to explore one's trauma by way of circumstance and duty, as well as trade podcasting war stories... A solemn and singular exchange which I do hope you'll enjoy. You can connect with Tanguy via Instagram. Be sure to Subscribe, rate and review Tanguy's incredible Teach Reach podcast . I came across Julian Bell's body of work through a Reel that was recommended on my Instagram feed. Couldn't quite place it at the time, but as I'm recording this, I realize that what drew me, even on such a small screen, was this sense of genuine playfulness that he had about him. I know that Reels are meant to catch our eye and give us that small second of dopamine and giggles, but Julian's content has that differentiating factor that sets it apart from all the junk. His is a particular mix of engaging playfulness and thoughtful engagement that might make you overlook what a truly hard worker you're looking at. Even though I have long since put professional photography behind me, I always keep these masterful handlers of the visual art in high esteem. Julian Bell is an incredibly talented creative and that goes without saying. Being a skilled filmmaker, photographer as well as a prolific content creator, Julian's storytelling skills and eye for detail have been effectively chiseled in order for his content to answer the needs of his community. Even with an ever increasing Social Media following, he manages to maintain a level head through it all, despite his success. From touching words of encouragement, to gear tips, to reminding us the importance of taking a break, Julian is one of those engaging souls whose warmth and approachability are always welcome. On this episode, I sit down with Julian to talk about his beginnings, going full-time as filmmaker and content creator, the importance of play, tapping into your wild ideas, experimentation...and even get his insights on his favourite Anime and Manga. I find today's episode is incredibly appropriate as for some reason, the very subject matter we're going to touch on happens to be so relevant. See, I was bullied a lot when I was a kid. Something I'm sure many of you can relate to. I'm from a different time where I was taught to strike a balance between sucking it up to recognizing bullying from just playful schoolyard teasing to standing up for myself even if it meant a bruised lip when other person went over the line. I however cannot speak to some of the particular traumas that some people have experienced from their childhood and have unfortunately carried on way into their adult life...and sadly, in their workplace as well. Because truth is, personally, in the grand scheme of things, I'll admit that I never took the time to put a label on it. But as much as my tendencies would have me believe otherwise, some of the worst bullies can often be found in the very place where you work. Workplace bullying is a very real thing. There's an actual prevalence of it in North America. A January 2021 Workplace Bullying Survey survey conducted by the Workplace Bullying Institute estimates 30 percent of Americans have suffered abusive conduct at work. That's about 48.6 million Americans. if this numbers seem unreal. Imagine the stories of the people who have experienced these incidents in the first place. I believe it made for an interesting and educational exchange as today's guest, Zenica Chatman, graced this humble podcast with her insights, expertise, wit and incredible truth. I admire people who have tapped into their purpose with a clear sense of direction and drive and Zenica is one of those. Zenica is a certified personal and executive coach, workplace trauma expert, trainer and speaker helping her clients rediscover their inner strength and confidence. As a trained journalist and communications strategist, Zenica uses her unique background to help her clients reimagine what's possible for them and design a career and life they love. She decided to take a stand against corporate bullies after she was left emotionally broken by a pair of workplace bullies at the height of her career. Once she realized that too many women (especially women of colour) had experiences similar to hers, Zenica decided to take a stand against workplace bullies and help other women learn to stand up, speak out and be heard in the workplace and beyond! This episode is an emotional one. Zenica's story and mission are truly noteworthy and it's an honour to bring you this wonderful exchange. On this episode, recognizing workplace bullying as it happens, knowing when it's not , not giving away your power, the importance of guiding principles for finding personal strength...and so much more. I think this episode is a very special one. Recorded a while back, I had taken a lot of time before publishing it. Simply because, while listening to it during the editing stage, I realized that I was in a kind a weird mental state. I've often told you guys that this show being a work in progress, one thing I would never do is pretend that I have it all figured out. Sometimes, I go into these conversations and what I have in mind and what eventually comes out of it are totally different. And that's one the time-capsule aspects of podcasting that I truly enjoy. You go back in time and relive conversations and emotions you forgot were there. And it really helps when the person you share this time with has both the empathy and space to receive what you have to share. This is the mutual respect, vulnerability and brotherly love that came from this intimate, unfiltered and emotional exchange with my friend, Dennis Gable. Even though he and I have never met in person, I do not hesitate to call him a personal friend, as in someone who's friendship, honesty, good heart and willingness to always be real has been nothing short of humbling. Something that I truly hope to keep giving back. Dennis truly is a man of many talents. He is a dedicated father, something that already makes him awesome in my book. As an imaginative entrepreneur, among his many ventures, he is the creator of 52 Card Pick Me Up, a Mental Health tool for all ages, helping you to identify and align the areas of your life that need attention and action. He is the also a talented branding specialist, marketing consultant and content creator - or as he coined it himself back in 2019, a bonafied Brand Producer, integrating traditional marketing theory, relational philosophy, and foundational creative principles. As a fellow podcaster, he his the creator and host of the Self To Society podcast where brings a vast and deeply masculine voice to the conversation on the topic of vulnerability and where he shares a deep understanding of the human experience through his singular perspective. This conversation is one of those "...wait, I think we should record this.." type of scenarios where two men, two brothers, sat down and chose to hold space for each other in a moment of kindness where each other had a lot on their mind... manhood, confusion, the beauty and fragility of life, having the courage to be genuine in an age hypocrisy, what it means to being a good person...and so much more. Unfiltered, unbothered, just truth - the best kind of recordings. Enjoy. When I was in my teens, I got the opportunity to be part of a theatre class. The Director at the time was short one male role so I had the chance to be exposed to the art of the stage for the first time. It was a defining moment for me as I realized I genuinely had a talent for it. But then Life happened. Coming from a traditional background where academics are THE priority above all else including creative endeavours, added to the fact that I my grades were in the dumps, my parents drew a line in the sand and I had to close the curtains on the whole experience. Fast forward a few years and many life experiences later, and I still hold a sincere respect for the art of acting. Where one can draw from his or her emotions, experiences, trauma, joy, victories, failures and eventually portray a fleshed-out character or persona, this not only takes quite a bit of creative expertise but most importantly, a tremendous amount of courage. I've learned that in many ways, we as human beings are deathly afraid of discomfort. Anything that steps outside of that familiarity of our comfort zone is a lifeline we tend to hold onto, sometimes against our best interest. As my next guest has allowed me to see through his resounding body of work, the thrill of being a creative, whether through acting, painting or otherwise, is that the unknown is an essential part of the journey and we get the opportunity to shape it however we desire. A message of accountability and audacity that totally resonates with our mission here on the podcast. Anthony Meindl is an award-winning director, writer, actor, and acting coach. Among his numerous achievements and accolades, Anthony wrote and directed "Where We Go From Here", which premiered at Outfest in 2019 at the famous Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. It won Best Screenplay at Q-Films Long Beach and the Jury Award at NYC's East Village Queer Film Festival, and was acquired by HULU. He is the founder and artistic director of the Anthony Meindl's Actor's Workshop which he bravely started some 26 years ago in his apartment with 6 students and the desire to help actors understand a more modern and simpler approach to the work. He has been a passionate advocate in helping actors everywhere understand their worth and advocate for themselves and their own creativity. He has broken myths around the business and what often holds actors back. His mission has always been to help marginalized people and Artists of Color and Trans, Non-Binary, and Queer-identifying actors who often have had little access to training and opportunities in the business. He now has the largest scene study studio in Los Angeles and locations in 10 other cities around the world: New York, London, Vancouver, Toronto, Atlanta, Sydney, Chicago, Copenhagen and Cape Town. He is the author of five books; the best-selling creativity book AT LEFT BRAIN TURN RIGHT, self-improvement ALPHABET SOUP FOR GROWN-UPS, acting guide BOOK THE F#©KING JOB!, his memoir, YOU KNEW WHEN YOU WERE 2, and the latest, UNSTUCK, a creativity manual. His self-published books have sold over 28,000 copies. Whimsically embracing the immensely daunting yet incredible adventure that we all call Life. That is, in but a few words, how i can describe the body of work and personal mission, as i see it, that my next guest has set for herself. And, in her own smiley, energetic and immensely vulnerable way, she chooses to have us tag along for the ride. Dasia Washington is a digital content creator, vlogger, podcaster as well as a shamelessly talented roller-skating enthusiast and certified instructor. Being an admittedly creative and hopeless romantic, Dasia, in her words, has committed herself to 'unfolding' which means squeezing everything out of life in every way possible. When you read her commentary and numerous musings, you get the obvious sense that Dasia has come from a very sincere place of personal truth, courage and perspective that allows her the necessary vantage point to aim ture towards her daily growth. When you watch her wonderful videos, so incredibly charged with fun and light, you do realize that she makes them in hopes to teach, encourage and hopefully inspire others to do the same. It was thrilling and energy-filled experience to share this space with such a truly special being, so faithfully dedicated to her journey of empowerment and courageous to tell her story, warts and all. Tim McBride and I have only know each known each for a very short time by way of courtesy from a mutual acquaintance. But, you don't have to have played ball together or gone to the same High School to connect with someone who, by all accounts, resonates on the same frequency as you do. Today's conversation overflows with Tim's incredible drive to excel at everything he does. And I mean, everything. From being among the top 1% of all real estate agents in the State of Arizona, to an incredibly successful entrepreneur, devoted man of faith, immensely committed husband and father, as well as a proactive philanthropist in his local community, Tim's heart is driven by contributing to positive change in the world. Hard work, drive, and perseverance has also garnered Tim a few much-deserved accolades, including being named to the Scottsdale Association of Realtors' Forty Under Forty list in 2022, winning the Housing Wire's 2022 Rising Star award. Tim has always believed in a purpose bigger than himself. While real estate is his business, service is Tim's passion. As a Caribbean man, I can tell you firsthand that there is true effort happening as we speak to bring some necessary light to the serious needs of Men in regards to their Mental Health. Men don't talk. When your cultural and societal upbringing has patiently designed you to keep things in for so long, it it really a surprise? But - turns out Men will talk to other Men about things. When I first joined a Men's group some 2-3 years ago, I did not know what to expect. What I found was a group of peers : men, black men, fathers, mostly of Haitian descent who took this confident and intimate step towards opening up to other Men about things on their mind. This is how I got the opportunity to meet and connect with today's guest, Coach Djimy Rouzard. As one of the group's main Moderators, Coach D, as he's commonly known, has faithfully helmed our regular meeting sessions as both facilitator and mentor. Coach D is a Personal Trainer, Speaker, Certified Life Coach and Violence Prevention Specialist for at-risk youths. Coach D proudly integrates mindfulness into the multi-faceted work he does with people of all ages. His unique approach can help deepen self-awareness, increase well-being, enhance performance, reinforce self-esteem, achieve goals, improve interpersonal relationships and decrease stress. On this episode, Coach D shares his insights on the important milestones being set by men in our community as they demonstrate an increasing willingness to participate in these groups, how self-forgiveness is necessary, how men are more layered than they're given credit for, doing the work...and so much more. Every time I hit 'Record' to create the magic that brings you guys these episodes, I never fail to be grateful for that pivotal moment where I got to learn the ropes of what would become something I truly do enjoy - and that's the art of broadcasting. Turns out there's more to just sitting behind a mic and opening your mouth to say what's on your mind. This last particular detail was very much on my mind over the past few months. In this Age of Distraction that we're currently experiencing, I've noticed that certain things have become somewhat revolutionary: being yourself, speaking your truth and the consequences that come with that. I'm not kidding on this one. You hear a lot about authenticity and being vulnerable but I get the feeling that the revolutionaries of today are the ones who speak the uncomfortable truths. And I for one believe my my next guest has a very solid take on the matter. "Freeway" Frank Depalo was born and raised in Montreal, and went on to become a popular Canadian radio personality. Having worked in the industry from coast to coast over the last 30 years, he has hosted top radio shows, including the Canadian Top 20 Countdown, from Vancouver, to Toronto, to Calgary and back to his hometown of Montreal. In a surprising state of events however, after having helmed hosting duties along with co-host Natasha Gargiulo on Montreal's Virgin Radio morning show for close to 9 years, their services with the station were terminated and both Frank & Natasha were quite literally tossed out. As heartbreaking as it undoubtedly was, Frank has remained true to his passion for broadcasting and bringing his voice and expertise to serve in a newfound medium : podcasting. As the host of the incredible Drive By Podcast, Frank takes off the shackles of traditional radio and, in his own singular, warm and sometimes biting way, discusses topics and issues, some light, some tougher from a perspective that I believe people need to hear. I don't know a thing about the Tattoo culture. I have personally teased my brain with the idea of getting one but one thing I do know about the artists who have truly dedicated their life's journey to specializing in this very intimate form of art, it's a beautiful thing to behold. I came across Andy Pho(@andypho)'s body of work and engaging personality as randomly as an Instagram Reel will allow for that quick 7-second sound bite. I could have easily scrolled past it but there was something so truthful and empowering about Andy's message that I had to get to know about the individual. Purely from a layman's perspective, when you get to see Andy's impressive work, there is no denying why he is such a well respected artist, known all around the tattoo community. As an illustrious tattooer, Andy spent most of his life creating art in New York and Las Vegas and has now settled in Texas with the creation of Upside Tattoo, a new vision for a tattoo environment, where he performs custom tattoo work and mentors tattooers of all different styles and experience levels. His patience and a do or die mentality has accelerated him as a tattooer, building a reputation upon respect and technique within the community. He is continuously pushing the limits of his work, manifesting new concepts into reality. For Andy, the art of tattooing is not a job - it is his life's calling as it's something he genuinely lives and breathes. This is not a conversation about the best needle cartridges to use or ink brands he recommends. What motivated me to have Andy on the show is his clear sense purpose, self awareness and humility despite his unquestionable talent. Here is a guy who does not sit on his laurels but willingly challenges himself mentally, physically and spiritually in order to consistently fuel his creativity as well as personal growth. On this episode, Andy shares his insights on self-mastery, the willingness to serve, keeping a positive outlook, staying disciplined...and so much more. 2022 was not the best year for me mentally. A lot personal issues, both personal and professional had me really struggling and trying to keep my head level. In the heat and thick of it, I was trying as best I could to try and find some form of support from outside sources that I felt could rely on. See, sometimes, you have to acknowledge when you need help and most importantly, identify the right people that can help you. Oftentimes, as Men, all we need is an ear to listen and make us feel understood. And that's how I fortunately came across the impactful work that Danny (@mtl.un.common) was doing with the Men in our community here in Montreal. Not a Social Worker, not a Therapist - just a regular guy, who, along with other like-minded Men, is motivated to help, simply by listening, creating space and furthering the conversation towards healing and strengthening the necessary bonds between our brothers. On this episode: how we can be better allies, learning to empathize, having the courage to open up and speak up, vulnerability among Men...and so much more. Back in the days when I was really into photography I got to discover a wide array of incredibly talented photographers. One who undoubtedly stood out was Benjamin Von Wong. Funny enough, it's only a lot later that I found out that, despite his worldly travels and spectacular body of work, that he was local Montrealer. Ben's work as photographer and visual storyteller is nothing short of amazing. His images are an experience. He pulls you into the story and grabs your emotions with his subjects in a way that not many photographers can aspire to, let alone achieve. As a bonafied 'artivist' translating devastating data into emotional experiences, he has merged his imagery with his willingness to serve causes he believes can bring valuable change. Being quite active on social media, he has become known for his photographic projects taking aim at the environmental threats posed by fast fashion, plastics in our oceans and electronic waste. His current work lies at the intersection of fantasy and photography and combines everyday objects with shocking statistics. It has attracted the attention of corporations, like Starbucks, Dell, and Nike and has generated over 100 million views highlighting various environmental issues, such as climate change or biodiversity loss. He was also most recently named one of Adweek's 11 content branded masterminds. His projects come together thanks to large-scale collections by an army of volunteers, resulting in spectacular installations designed to capture the imagination and provoke radical changes in our perspectives and our behaviour. Still carving his own path, and always with the same infectious smile and inspiring energy, he has made it his mission to make positive impact unforgettable. When passion meets intention and happens to be guided by purpose, it's an obviously potent and impactful mix. It it possible to change the world? Can one picture make a difference? If you take it from Von Wong's vantage point, I can assure you the answer is an engaging 'Yes'. You can connect with Ben via Instagram(@vonwong) or his official website(www.vonwong.com). Another year. We've come a long way, dear Awesome Tribe. Every opportunoty, every guest, every second put into bringing you the value and knowledge that I hope you get from every episode is always, as I like to say often, an honour and a thrill. 2022 has been a year of ups and downs for 'A.T.A' and I can honestly say I questioned my sanity a few times wondering if I had anything left in the tank. Fortunately, some of you were kind enough to step in and lend a hand. Support comes in many forms and I cannot tell you how your wordsof encouragement, appreciation, check-ins and nudges were always welcome throughout the year. This year, keeping up woth tradition, your guest host is none other than veteran A.T.A. guest and all-around Awesome gent, Max De La Cruz. And THIS was a heckuva conversation. Max came out guns blazing and it shows. Memories, highlights, successes, setbacks...he really brought it out of me. So let's not waste any time and get into this. On today's episode... I want to first and foremost give a shoutout to Isaiah. I connected with Isaiah some years ago. I can tell you I know an awesome gent when I meet one. At the time, holding down hosting resposabilities for The Booth Life which is how he came across my radar as local Montreal doing his podcast thing. And one of his guests, on one of his later episodes, he actually interviewed his mom, Ms Michelle Martel, and she had an amazing story to tell. Michelle basically rewrote her script. Even after leaving workforce, going back home, raise kids full time and then decidingtake the helm of her own life and go back to school and just open up a new chapter in her life as famed and reputableinterior designer. With a notoriety that caught the eye of established publications such as Apartment Therapy & HGTV. I'm just letting you guys know that if you go on her Instagram page, it's definitely something that's going to brighten up your day. We always think that it's too late to rewrite our script, when I don't believe that at all. It is so inspiring to see people, even at a certain point in your life, even having good done the career, the kids...can go farther. If you listen to Michelle's story, it's something that can only show you how a choice can define the greater things that are to come. Another exciting episode, which I do hope you'll enjoy. "I may not have all the answers but I'm sure there's a book that does." Those were, among many more, some of my father's memorable words of wisdom. Whenever my siblings and I would come to him with a question beyond his impressive knowledge, with those words, he was simply nudging us to get resourceful and just figure it out. And 'figuring it out' often meant digging and researching within the incredible amount of books he had on every conceivable topic. No joke. This eventually led to a serious love for books and thirst for knowledge that has stayed with us to this day. These are the kind of powerful anecdotes that my next guest truly resonates with as his passion for the wonders and rewards that stem from the love of reading are summed up in his personal slogan : Read or Else. Ty Allan Jackson is an award-winning children's book author, youth motivational speaker, literacy advocate, and honorary Doctorate recipient. A three-time TEDx presenter, he travels around the US inspiring children to read and educating adults about the impacts of illiteracy. Jackson's self-published books have been featured on CNN, NBC Nightly News, The Steve Harvey Show, PBS, and the Hallmark Channel. In 2020, he appeared on Marvel's Hero Project on Disney+ and a Good Morning America segment featuring Sidney Keys, a young man who was inspired by Jackson's book Danny Dollar Millionaire Extraordinaire: The Lemonade Escapade to create an innovative book club for Black boys. Ty is also the cofounder of the Read or Else movement and the financial literacy program, the Danny Dollar Academy. A third appearance on the show is certainly something to acknowledge and celebrate. When certain guests have been such a profound source of support and collaboration, you let them know. It's a true honour to welcome back today's guest on the program. Dionne Nicholls is a professional coach trained through Accomplishment Coaching. From being estranged from her father for years as he was diagnosed with schizophrenia, to giving birth to a son with a rare heart condition, to feeling stuck in a 20-year career and having her 17-year relationship end in betrayal, Dionne knows very well that she does not look like what she's been through. And, that's the point. After an extensive journey of self-reflection and seeking the meaning of why she was put on this planet starting in 2014, she came to the realization that the gift she had to bring to the party of life was JOY. Following a successful 20-year career in the fashion industry, co-founding a successful Non-Profit, producing and co-hosting a successful 5-star rated podcast, and being a single mom at the age of 40, Dionne transitioned to become a leadership coach. As the Founder of Live Your Best Life For You, Dionne focuses on supporting her clients in making significant shifts in their lives and leadership styles, while taking a firm yet empathetic stand for their goals and dreams. Inspired by her own personal journey of reinvention, Dionne dedicates her life to supporting working mothers who are challenged with balancing their commitment to a thriving, meaningful career and personal life. She is the creator of the signature program The RESET: How to Pivot from Powerless to Purpose and is a Brand Ambassador for The Five-Minute Journal, the gratitude journal that changed her life. This conversation was both informative and empowering as Dionne brought us some much needed guidance on accepting our faults, forgiving our missteps, creating a strong vision, embracing courage...and so much more. It's so appropriate to launch this next episode into the Universe. Indeed, the will to serve, despite the fear and excuses that we might tell ourselves to not show up for our loved ones, colleagues, collaborators, clients or otherwise...is often a driving force that many of our guests have in common on this show. As I edited this episode, a renewed feeling of solid dedication and selfless commitment came rushing back as Russell Westcott's wisdom, warmth and incredible wealth of knowledge reminded me why I do this. One of the nicest people I've had to privilege to have on this program, Russell is a full-time veteran Canadian-based real estate investor, author, inspirational public speaker, devoted husband and loving father who loves teaching and inspiring others to greatness. Small town Saskatchewan boy turned 18year+ Real Estate investing guru, Russell is as down-to-earth as they come. Our conversation was a real gem of sincere kindness. Russell's intentional presence and empathy made this time incredibly precious : from the importance of getting clear on our goals, to embracing failures not as setbacks but 'data points', to bringing the right attitude into every interaction...I can tell you quite honestly that this one of the best episodes ever. You can connect with Russell via his official website: www.russellwestcott.com If you're into Real Estate investing, whether a seasoned investor or just a curious novice trying to peek into this exciting field, do be sure to check out and tap into Russell's years of expertise by listening to his wonderful podcast which you can find here: https://russellwestcott.com/category/podcast/ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Connect with us // Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/awakentheawesome Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/atapodcast Email : awakentheawesome@gmail.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Our full back catalog of episodes is also available on your favorite platforms : Apple Podcasts : https://apple.co/3bcWAWX Spotify : https://spoti.fi/3rZOA1B Amazon(Alexa) : https://tinyurl.com/enk2dkk4 Google Podcasts : https://tinyurl.com/y57gshn4 Stitcher : https://tinyurl.com/yxrfp2s3
One of the things I really feel a lot of us are really struggling with these past few years is the fact that we do not take the necessary time to really - and I mean REALLY - get to know and appreciate ourselves. ‘Self-Love' has really become a buzzword as of late and in the grand scheme of things, as is often the case, I realize that a lot of people simply toss it around cause it sounds nice. That's unfortunate. If people truly realized how much power lies in harnessing the beauties as well as imperfections that make up the sum of their wonderful being, they would probably spend a bit more time catering to that. I say this wholeheartedly because I am witnessing a lot of people I care about sluggishly dragging their feet in the sand when it comes to their journey simply because they're being admittedly weighed down by other people's opinions of them. I call Foul. Fortunately, today's guest is a person whom I've long admired for her deep-rooted sense of self-worth, undeniable personal truth and unapologetic commitment to show up to the world as her own authentic self. Clara Luce Lafond takes no prisoners on that front. Whether you follow her on social media or have the chance to share a conversation with her off-line, there's no questioning her strong conviction that we have duty to embrace our greatness on all facets, what she calls the Light & the Dark, if we are to live our lives to the its fullest. And if such a conviction should for some reason occasionally rub others' sensibilities the wrong way - well,...tough shit. This conversation is not your typical exchange. Clara and I dive deep into certain concepts of spirituality, energy, and personal truth that might leave some of you scratching your heads a bit. But as always, I invite to keep an open mind, both of heart and empathy, as some of the topics we discuss are worth their weight in perspective. Also, I'd like to ask for your kind indulgence as today's recording suffered some technical difficulties which resulted in some choppy audio in certain parts. But, as always, out of respect for the guest's generous time and availability, I chose to keep the editing to a minimum in order to preserve as much of Clara's powerful message as possible. Working with family can be a shot in the dark sometimes as even the closest relatives can become damaging business partners. Fortunately, that was not the case for Dave & Dillon Mysliwiec, respectively CEO of The Upstate Sound & President of Upstate Management. Building a successful business, be it an impressive record label carving its own path in the industry or growing music management empire, will most certainly take time, patience, sacrifice and a solid sense of dedication. But if you're lucky enough to count on your family as part of your close circle of collaborators - that's a precious bonus. The palpable synergy and mutual respect that these two shared during our exchange was surely only a glimpse of the tremendous bond between them: Dave being the infectiously energetic and fearless creative, and Dillon being the savvy & tactical Marketing expert, they're quite the dynamic duo. One of the many takeaways I got from this epic conversation was that you must take great care to ensure the mission is on everybody's mind and that we're all rowing in the same direction despite our various roles. Smart, energetic and with an exemplary sense of collaboration, Dave & Dillon are only getting started. An exciting and noteworthy episode, which I do hope you'll enjoy. I genuinely freaked out the first time I saw a short video that today's guest, Erich Leidums, shared of his young daughter on skis...going down a hill... As a Haitian, living in Canada...and even though I enjoy winter...winter Sports such as skiing, snowboarding, skating etc...frighten the living daylights out of me. And I'll be perfectly honest - not that I've ever tried. I'm just scared. Period. But that's the thing isn't it? As loving parents, we love our children and we take our role as providers and caretakers seriously. Oftentimes a bit too seriously. And the unfortunate result is that we have the potential to burden their experiences with our fears and doubts. And that's how I caught myself watching that little video... "...how can they let such a small kid do that?..." "...what if she falls?..." ...and all other sorts of judgemental/reactionary thoughts that I'm certain Erich has had to be the target of over the years of sharing similar content of his family's active, outdoor, inspiring lifestyle. Erich teaches us that there is huge difference between perceived risk and actual risk. And what a thrill it is to see such heartwarming proof that kids, when you take step back and out of their way, will amaze you with their achievements, curiosity and resilience. I really enjoyed this conversation as I got to share his personal and thought-provoking perspective on the need for kids to experience risk, the importance of minding our words when advising caution, the importance of 'Letting Go' as well as defining what kind of a Life actually matters to us... // Connect with Erich // Links // -Instagram : @thatmountainlife -YouTube : That Mountain Life #StayAwesome #ATATribe - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Connect with us // Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/awakentheawesome Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/atapodcast Email : awakentheawesome@gmail.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Our full back catalog of episodes is also available on your favorite platforms : Apple Podcasts : https://apple.co/3bcWAWX Spotify : https://spoti.fi/3rZOA1B Amazon(Alexa) : https://tinyurl.com/enk2dkk4 Google Podcasts : https://tinyurl.com/y57gshn4 Stitcher : https://tinyurl.com/yxrfp2s3
