In occasione dell'80esimo anniversario dello scoppio della prima bomba atomica su Hiroshima, Laser ripropone una intervista a Ida Bertolini Nussbaum. Poche settimane dopo lo scoppio della bomba su Nagasaki, il 9 agosto 1945, per una serie di circostanze e con il desiderio di aiutare i sopravvissuti, Ida si ritrovò nella città giapponese. Anche lei risentì in modo pesante delle radiazioni, effetti che ancora oggi, a 98 anni, la costringono a periodici interventi alla pelle. Ma la sua testimonianza è preziosissima per capire l'orrore e l'atrocità vissuto dalla popolazione civile giapponese. Giulia Spina ha 42 anni, ed è metà imprenditrice, metà dipendente. È cresciuta a Torino, in una famiglia benestante ma segnata dalla memoria di chiusure d'azienda e prudenza finanziaria. Dopo aver conseguito un dottorato in Fisica e aver trascorso alcuni anni felici in un'azienda aeronautica, Giulia e suo marito decidono di trasferirsi in Francia, a Clermont-Ferrand, città natale di lui, nel cuore della “Diagonale du Vide” francese. Qui, benché fatichi a creare una rete di amicizie, Giulia trova le condizioni ideali per tirare fuori l'idea green chiusa in un cassetto da anni: un depuratore d'aria che sfrutta le piante per pulire l'acqua e restituire agli ambienti interni un “microbiota da bosco”.«Mi sono trovata in un momento in cui Macron ha deciso che la Francia dovesse diventare la start-up nation… e ho detto: “O la faccio adesso, o non la farò mai più”». Si licenzia e si dedica alla sua idea. Una scelta resa possibile dalla misura che garantisce due anni di disoccupazione a chi avvia un'attività in proprio. «In Francia, ancora prima di aver creato l'azienda, sei considerato “portatore di progetto” e puoi già fare domanda per ottenere delle sovvenzioni». Giulia presenta il progetto, ottiene 20mila euro dei 30mila necessari a realizzare il prototipo. Gli altri 10mila li ottiene con un borsa regionale. E così si dedica allo sviluppo di tre prototipi. Le difficoltà non mancano: «Realizzare e testare i prototipi è costoso. Inoltre, bisogna capire se il mercato è pronto: a volte un prodotto può funzionare perfettamente, ma non incontrare interesse, o viceversa risultare troppo costoso per il mercato».Oggi Giulia finanzia il suo progetto con un prestito d'onore da 120.000 euro dalla Banque Publique d'Investissement (BPI), una banca pubblica francese che sostiene le start-up accettando l'alto rischio di fallimento. «Il mio sogno sarebbe portare questo sistema anche in Italia, perché finanziare l'innovazione è sempre una scommessa: nove volte su dieci non va a buon fine, ma è un rischio che bisogna accettare».Finiti i due anni di disoccupazione, Giulia ha trovato un lavoro stabile in un'azienda idroelettrica, che le ha permesso di riequilibrare anche la vita familiare. «Mi stavo ritrovando a fare quasi solo la casalinga, ero io a dover andare a prendere i bambini a scuola perché "avevo più tempo libero". Ora la situazione è più equilibrata e per i nostri figli è importante passare tempo con entrambi i genitori».Con un misto di ansia e determinazione, Giulia continua a investire parte del suo stipendio nel suo progetto: «Per me è un investimento sul futuro, un'attività in cui credo. Ho imparato ad accettare che, anche se non dovesse andare a buon fine, va bene così: l'importante è provarci».

Marina Mangiat ha 36 anni e cresce con un rispetto quasi religioso per i soldi, che oggi collega al trauma di una truffa finanziaria subita da una bisnonna, che ha lasciato un segno nel subconscio familiare. Fin dal primo lavoro, guadagnare non è solo una necessità pratica per Marina, ma un modo per affermare la propria libertà personale. Uno strumento che le dà il potere di non dover scendere a compromessi, neppure con gli amici. Dopo la prima esperienza lavorativa a Milano, si trasferisce in Svizzera, dove guadagna 48mila euro all'anno. Lì si rende conto che, sebbene il denaro le garantisca sicurezza, autonomia e potere, la sua vita si è trasformata in una prigione di infelicità: «Avevo un lavoro a tempo indeterminato, un buono stipendio e un appartamento tutto mio, eppure sentivo che la mia vita si era bloccata». Così, decide di lasciare la Svizzera e accetta un'offerta da un'azienda tedesca, trasferendosi a Monaco di Baviera. Qui fa carriera, cambia tre lavori e arriva a guadagnare 64mila euro all'anno. Negli ultimi tempi, però, ancora una volta l'insoddisfazione prende il sopravvento. Benché sia pagata bene, non riceve aumenti da 4 anni. Inoltre, ha iniziato a provare interesse per aspetti più spirituali della vita e si sta formando come insegnante di yoga. Ma il suo stipendio è diventato una gabbia fatta di sicurezza e orgoglio da cui fatica a liberarsi. Alla fine, è l'azienda a decidere per lei e Marina viene licenziata. Da quel momento sceglie di mettersi in proprio, alternando progetti di design all'attività di insegnante di yoga. Ha da parte 30.000 euro e può contare su una buona Naspi. Tuttavia, l'idea del denaro come unica fonte di sicurezza non si dissolve da un giorno all'altro: «Ci sono ancora momenti in cui il panico mi assale e penso: e se non riesco a far decollare il lavoro, cosa faccio?». Oggi, mentre il suo rapporto con il denaro si trasforma, Marina si concede una libertà che un tempo sembrava impossibile: lasciare andare un po' la sicurezza economica per aprirsi al caso e alle opportunità.
