Stanley S. Litow is Professor of the Practice at Duke University where he also served as Innovator in Residence and also teaches at Columbia University. He previously served as deputy chancellor of schools for New York City and as president of the IBM Foundation and vice president of Corporate Citizenship and Corporate Affairs at IBM. At IBM, he helped create Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH), the innovative grade 9 to 14 school connecting school to college to career. On May 3, 2019, ten teams of CUNY students competed for prizes in the final round of the 2019 CUNY IBM Watson Social Impact Challenge. The mission of this competition is to provide CUNY students with the opportunity to apply Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to solve problems facing NYC’s public sector. The students developed and utilized essential skills such as critical thinking, communication skills and technological literacy to help solve concrete policy challenges. Stan Altman, PhD, Professor at Baruch College’s Marxe School of Public and International Affairs and Stan Litow, former President of the IBM Foundation and its Citizenship Program, conceived this idea four years ago. With support from IBM, the Donald and Shelley Rubin Foundation, Baruch College and CUNY, over 1,000 students have participated in these competitions. This year, 210 students from 19 of CUNY’s 25 campuses joined the challenge, demonstrating the demand for experience-based learning opportunities to solve real world problems, using 21st century technology such as IBM’s Watson technology. The 11 students on the top three winning teams this year developed tools to reduce suicide rates among veterans, ease student attrition at CUNY and help New York City Transit improve the efficiency of its maintenance systems.

Jen Crozier, President of the IBM Foundation and Vice President of IBM Corporate Citizenship, shares the importance of living with intention. In college, Jen planned on becoming a professor of linguistics. But she worked at IBM for a summer gig and fell in love with all the amazing people and the important inventing, building, and designing work they were doing. In this episode, Jen shares why people pleasing is a real derailment to success, the importance of putting energy into bigger, higher-level things, and the best advice one of her mentors gave her.  

  In today's Art of Procurement Friday Show, I wanted to follow up on the discussion from the last episode with Stan Litow, President of the IBM Foundation and Vice President of Corporate Affairs at IBM. I explore CSR a little further, and the role that procurement can play, over and above what was discussed in episode 26 which was mainly focused on how procurement can help spur small business growth by giving small, local, businesses the opportunity to win business.  What was interesting to me was that the outside view was that the key role we play is related to growth, where as the internal procurement view is to protect our organizations against harm.  I explore this further in today's show.
