In this episode of The Daily Lawyer's GC Series, we sit down with Dr. Vivek Mittal, the Executive Director of Legal and Corporate Affairs at Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL). Vivek's journey is a masterclass in career agility, global leadership, and the "How" of hiring. He shares the incredible story of how a chance trip to Delhi and a sense of "FOMO" led him to register for a Company Secretary course with an 800-rupee loan - a decision that eventually led him to lead legal teams at global giants like Lupin, Dr. Reddy's, and now HUL. Key Topics Covered: 1. Career Growth: How he flipped his focus from being a Company Secretary to a General Counsel at India's leading companies 2. Global Leadership: Lessons from leading massive M&A deals in Brazil, Mexico, and Japan, and managing cross-cultural teams. 3. The "How" of Hiring: Why Vivek gives 50% or more weightage to a candidate's attitude and ethics over their technical domain skills. 4. AI & Legal Tech: Why you can't run away from LLMs and how technology will soon handle 70-80% of routine legal tasks. This episode is part of our General Counsel Series, presented in proud collaboration with Zoho Sign. Our next guest for this week is Peter Khalil, MP for Wills and Assistant Minister for Defence. Some of the topics discussed today between Macca, Zoe, Kenny and the Minister are: With so many Australian service people currently serving on US subs, what does that mean for Australia in escalating global conflicts? Had the Israeli government adequately responded yet over the deliberate bulldozing of ANZAC graves at the Commonwealth Cemetery in Gaza? The Defence Force Discipline Amendment (RCDVS Implementation) Bill 2026, introduced by Minister for Veterans' Affairs Matt Keogh, will enable eligible Defence personnel convicted solely on the basis of consensual homosexual activity to apply to have those convictions extinguished—will there be a formal apology from the Government and the Prime Minister? What is he hoping his mate Dr Chalmers will announce in the Budget. What are his constituents saying to him about the PRRT and taxation of Gas exports? Peter was first elected to the House of Representatives for Wills, Victoria in 2016. Previously, Peter was the Special Envoy for Social Cohesion from July 2024 to May 2025, Chair of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security from September 2022 to October 2024, and has held numerous committee positions. Peter is a second generation Australian. His parents migrated from Egypt to Melbourne for a better life. He grew up in public housing and played AFL and tennis semi-professionally after leaving school. Peter went on to study a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Law at the University of Melbourne and a Master of Laws at Australian National University. Prior to entering Parliament Peter was the Executive Director of Corporate Affairs, Strategy and Communications at SBS and a Victorian Multicultural Commissioner. He also has served as a foreign policy and national security adviser to former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. He has also worked as a public servant at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Department of Defence. Peter is married with 2 children and supports the Collingwood Football Club. We're proud to have provided 100 informative, humorous, and occasionally thrilling episodes of Little Questions - the podcast for all of us working with or working in Corporate Affairs, Communications and PR. To mark our 100th episode, we have gone back into the archives and pulled moments from the conversations that still resonate. In this special episode - the last to be hosted by Matt Young and Andrew Brown - we look back at some of the best moments from our last 100 shows: PR - is it a trade, an art, a profession - or are we just making it up? The challenge of explaining what you actually do for a living - to anyone, but especially your mother - gets a proper airing. The CEOs who get it. Amanda Blanc (CEO @ AVIVA) "total brutal honesty, no smoke-blowing please". Henry Englehart (Founder of Admiral), who heard himself discussed in the storytelling episode, asked to come on, and delivered a very direct conversation about leadership communications. Winners, losers in the world of Comms: Shania Twain. Matt Hancock. Elon Musk. A Jaguar rebrand with no actual plan behind it. Thank You for Smoking. Edina Monsoon. Deciding who you will and won't represent. And the statistic that still surprises us… some of you have listened to several of the episodes more than once. What are you all doing with your lives!? Little Questions will remain at batting crease and will be looking to make another 100 episodes. So Apella partners, Jenny Scott and James Kirkup, will shortly be putting on the pads and helmets, and ready to knock up another century of wisdom and wit. Want to share your thoughts or ideas for future topics? you can get in touch at podcast@apellaadvisors.com. Please consider leaving us a review. In this episode we're pulling back the curtain on a part of our business that we haven't spent much time talking about on the podcast—which is ironic, because it has everything to do with how we talk—and that's Communications. Specifically, we're talking about how we here at Nordstrom think about developing and refining a unified “voice”, so to speak, for the company, and the decisions around how and when that voice gets deployed to our various different audiences, internally and externally—which includes the people that work for us, our brand partners, and of course, our customers. To help us unpack this subject we'll hear from two people who speak the Nordstrom language better than just about anyone. First, you'll hear from Brooke White, who previously led our Corporate Communications for over 30 years and who played a huge part in shaping the necessary conversations in and around our company. After that I'll sit down with Grace Stearns, our current Senior Director of Communications and Corporate Affairs, who has actually herself made a handful of cameos on the Nordy Pod. She's been an incredible addition and asset to the team, and continues to be a trusted sounding board for Pete, Erik, and the rest of the corporate office. Together they'll discuss the essential role our Communications team plays in telling the story of our brand, lessons learned through pivotal moments in our growth, and some of the challenges that arise for our PR professionals as they attempt to filter the many voices of Nordstrom down to one. Thanks for tuning in to episode 108. We hope you enjoy it! Did you know that YOU can be on The Nordy Pod? This show isn't just a one-way conversation. Nicole shares why the Blessing of the Fleet & Seafood Festival is her favorite event of the year, tracing its roots back to the Magwood family and the shrimping community. What started as a grassroots gathering organized by shrimpers' wives has evolved into a massive celebration at Waterfront Memorial Park featuring local restaurants, a vibrant beer garden, and the iconic boat parade. This year marks the 39th annual festival, taking place on Sunday, April 26th. The episode dives into the full schedule, from the Mayor's welcome and the ceremonial blessing of the fleet by local ministers to high-energy entertainment like the shrimp-eating contest, Shag-dance competition, and live music from The Smythes. Danna highlights Harris Teeter's deep community roots and their commitment to local seafood through their expert Fisherman's Market and their associates who happily help out with ideas on how to cook your sedlected seafood. Beyond the festivities, learn about the event's heart: the charity partners. Net proceeds from this year's festival will benefit The Lonon Foundation and the East Cooper-Mt. Pleasant Kiwanis Club. In a world that occasionally feels like it's teetering on the edge, the demand for "wise counsel" has never been higher. In this episode of the Little Questions Podcast, we turn the spotlight on advice, the good, the bad, and the confidently delivered but completely wrong. Because in Corporate Affairs and Communications, advice isn't just part of the job, it is the job. Whether it's guiding reputations through choppy waters, helping leadership navigate tricky moments, or answering the unexpectedly high-stakes question of what a CEO should wear to an awards dinner, we're in the business of judgement. And most of the time, we get it right. …most of the time. Apella Partner Andrew Brown shares some of the best advice he's given (and received), alongside a few moments where things didn't quite go to plan. From genuinely valuable insights to the kind of counsel you politely ignore, and occasionally wish you had, we explore what separates wisdom from hindsight. Along the way: Why demonstrating commercial impact is non-negotiable The uncomfortable truth about hiring (and being judged for it) When leaders need a "suck it up" moment Why getting ahead of an issue matters more than reacting to it And some truly questionable guidance that's best left in the past We also reflect on the reality that even the most experienced advisers get it wrong sometimes and why that's not just inevitable, but useful. After all, as one famous cinematic strategist once proved… even the most confident advice can have fatal flaws. Apella partners Andrew Brown and Matt Young host this one and you can get in touch at podcast@apellaadvisors.com. Please consider leaving us a review. But in 2017, shortly after becoming a mother, Sarah's life changed forever when she was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive head and neck cancer. What followed was an extraordinary journey through major facial reconstructive surgeries, intensive radiation treatment, and ongoing medical challenges - a journey that ultimately led her to discover the ancient practice of Vedic meditation. Meditation became a cornerstone of Sarah's healing, recovery, and resilience, inspiring her to train as a Vedic meditation teacher and, in 2023, launch Medi Steady Go®, a business dedicated to sharing the wisdom and techniques she credits with saving her life. After almost seven years in remission, Sarah faced another unexpected challenge in 2024 when she was diagnosed with a metastasis to the lung. Although safely removed, complications followed, including a rare autoimmune condition that left her on life support and hospitalised for nearly three months. Once again, through holistic health practices and her unwavering daily meditation routine, Sarah made a remarkable recovery - defying medical expectations. Today, Sarah lives a joyful, purpose-filled life in Sydney with her husband and daughter and is the author of YOURU, her first book. As a daily meditator myself, I found this conversation incredibly grounding and inspiring. Sarah's experience reaffirmed for me the power of meditation not just as a tool for calm, but as a way of reconnecting with what's already within us - steadiness, resilience, and quiet joy. Listening to Sarah has encouraged me to go deeper in my own practice and to explore Vedic meditation more fully. I genuinely can't wait to join one of her Medi Steady Go® workshops. This episode is a reminder that while we can't always control what happens to us, we can choose how we meet it. Key Episode Takeaways: What Vedic meditation is and how it differs from other meditation practices The powerful role meditation can play in healing - physically, emotionally and spiritually Why a health diagnosis doesn't have to be defined only by fear or negativity How focusing on what you can do restores a sense of agency and hope Why happiness isn't something you need to chase - it's always there, waiting beneath the noise About the Guest Sarah Susak is a full-time working mum. Alexandru Voica, Head of Corporate Affairs and Policy at Synthesia, discusses how the world's largest enterprise AI video platform has approached trust and safety from day one. He explains Synthesia's "three C's" framework—consent, control, and collaboration: never creating digital replicas without explicit permission, moderating every video before rendering, and engaging with policymakers to shape practical regulation. Voica acknowledges these safeguards have cost some business, but argues that for enterprise sales, trust is competitively essential. The company's content moderation has evolved from simple keyword detection to sophisticated LLM-based analysis, recently withstanding a rigorous public red team test organized by NIST and Humane Intelligence. Voica criticizes the EU AI Act's approach of regulating how AI systems are built rather than focusing on harmful outcomes, noting that smaller models can now match frontier capabilities while evading compute-threshold regulations. He points to the UK's outcome-focused approach—like criminalizing non-consensual deepfake pornography—as more effective. On adoption, Voica argues that AI companies should submit to rigorous third-party audits using ISO standards rather than publishing philosophical position papers—the thesis of his essay "Audits, Not Essays." The conversation closes personally: growing up in 1990s Romania with rare access to English tutoring, Voica sees AI-powered personalized education as a transformative opportunity to democratize learning. Alexandru Voica is the Head of Corporate Affairs and Policy at Synthesia, the UK's largest generative AI company and the world's leading AI video platform. He has worked in the technology industry for over 15 years, holding public affairs and engineering roles at Meta, NetEase, Ocado, and Arm. You can't communicate your way out of a values problem. Yet every day, communications leaders are expected to do precisely that. In this episode of The Trending Communicator, host Dan Nestle sits down with Emil Hill, principal of The Creshiem Group and a public affairs strategist with 25+ years navigating the intersection of business, government, and communications. From guiding the W.K. Kellogg Foundation through Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation to helping Papa John's face their reckoning, from UnitedHealth Group to the National Education Association, Emil's been the strategist organizations call when quick fixes won't cut it. Emil and Dan explore why the consolidation of corporate communications, investor relations, government relations, and research under corporate affairs* umbrellas is the recognition that every stakeholder now connects to every other stakeholder. They dig into why crises reveal values misalignment, why your stock price timeline and your actual problem timeline are incompatible, and why "calm, clarity, and precision" matters more when everything's moving faster. *Dan says “Public Affairs” but means “Corporate Affairs” throughout the episode. He apologizes, especially to Megan Noel, for his confusion. Listen in and hear about... Why corporate affairs consolidation signals a fundamental shift in stakeholder connectivity How a finance background changes how you diagnose communications problems The gap between executive timelines and the time real organizational change requires Why quick crisis fixes usually miss what's actually broken Navigating uncertainty with optimism when change is inevitable Notable Quotes On The Power of Immersive Partnership: "I don't know if you can really be a good partner to any client if you don't immerse yourself in their business, understand who their competitors are, try to get a sense for their DNA and try to advise based on those understandings. If you don't have that, yeah, you're going to fall short every time." — Emil Hill [00:07:53 → 00:08:17] On The Future of Local News: "I am craving a deeper dive into, into local news that the Washington Post cannot provide for me and Mary about what's going on here that's not in the news. And it feels like with the evolution of technology, some enterprising business person is going to figure out a way to cobble together more information and news about particular parts of the country, city, state and local in a way that we used to." — Emil Hill [01:00:27 → 01:01:03] On Navigating Economic Uncertainty: "I think businesses, individuals and communities around the country, I think you want to hold on to your optimism. I think you should get active, but ride it. And this too shall pass." — Emil Hill [01:06:59 → 01:08:08] Resources and Links Dan Nestle Inquisitive Communications | Website The Trending Communicator | Website Communications Trends from Trending Communicators | Dan Nestle's Substack Dan Nestle | LinkedIn Emil Hill Emil Hill | LinkedIn Timestamps 0:00:00 Introduction – Rise of Public Affairs and Emil Hill's Expertise0:06:15 Pathways into Public Affairs – Problem Solving and Business Acumen0:11:03 Consolidation of Corporate Communications Functions0:16:44 Stakeholder Connections in a Rapid News Cycle0:23:19 Measuring Audience Sentiment and Internal vs. External Messaging0:29:22 Persuading Stakeholders – Importance of Data and Explanation0:34:57 AI's Role in Communications – Data, Analysis, and Domain Expertise0:42:32 Brand Missteps and the Limits of Research0:47:13 Real Audience Research vs. Social Media Noise0:53:42 New Corporate Affairs Capabilities – Local Sentiment and Crisis Response0:58:44 Local News Evolution and Technology's Impact1:04:39 Ideas for AI-Driven Local News Coverage1:08:08 Optimism, Change, and Closing Thoughts1:09:36 Outro and Subscription Info (Notes co-created by Human Dan, Claude, and Castmagic) Learn more about your ad choices. What happens when the communications function stops being about messaging and starts being about business transformation? In this episode of The Trending Communicator, host Dan Nestle reconnects with Megan Noel, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at Adtalem Global Education, to explore why the CCAO role is a fundamental reimagining of what communications does. Megan leads government relations, investor relations, public affairs, impact and sustainability, and alumni relations under one reputation-focused banner. From managing the fallout of the "One Big Beautiful Bill" over July 4th weekend to navigating AI search optimization and Wikipedia's importance in reputation management, Megan and Dan dig into the practical realities of corporate affairs at scale. They explore how business acumen has become a hard skill, why curiosity beats credentials, and how communicators can avoid becoming "negative Nancy" while still providing strategic counsel. Listen in and hear about... We used to just communicate what the business wanted.
