In 1969, John Lindsay's first term as mayor of New York City was coming to a close. After a series of labor disputes and a botched snowstorm recovery that shut down the city, his poll numbers were at an all-time low. Somehow, even after losing the Republican primary, he found a road to reelection.  In the final installment of this three-part podcast series by Spectrum News NY1, Errol Louis explores Lindsay's unlikely path to victory, his second term as mayor and his ill-advised presidential run. The episode also looks at Lindsay's enduring legacy and his innovative yet controversial ideas for urban development. In 1965, New York City was teetering on the edge of an uncertain future, but a Republican congressman from the Upper East Side was determined to save it. Fighting traditional power brokers and machine politicians, John Lindsay improbably was elected mayor that year; his eight years in office became one of the most tumultuous and transformative times in New York's recent history. In part one of a three-part podcast series by Spectrum News NY1, Errol Louis explores John Lindsay's turbulent New York, focusing on his early years in Congress and building up to being elected mayor in a dramatic three-way race in November of 1965. In an article, the WEF brags that this is a new record and that carbon taxes and emissions trading systems now account for 24% of the world's emissions, up from 7% in 2013. However, according to the report, it's not enough. Less than 1% of global emissions are being subject to a direct carbon price at the target rates, meaning there's still plenty of room for more taxes. No evidence that carbon taxes work Of course, there's no evidence carbon taxes change the weather or affect emissions. If there was, Canada, a world-renowned champion of it, would be able to provide evidence of this. In fact, there's probably evidence to the contrary, i.e., that not only has the carbon tax not changed the weather, it's made life significantly worse for Canadians for no good reason—as is likely the case everywhere else there's a carbon tax Source: thecountersignal.com  Another Failed Dem Policy: NY Gov. Hochul Forced to Place ‘Indefinite Pause' on New York City ‘Congestion Pricing'  “The public transit authority hasn't determined how much to charge drivers, but has considered fares ranging from $9 to $23 for passenger vehicles and between $12 and $82 for trucks. The scenarios contemplate different combinations of potential discounts, credits, and exemptions,” Politico reported. New York's Democrat Governor Kathy Hochul's spox John Lindsay cheered the approval saying at the time, “Governor Hochul is committed to implementing congestion pricing to reduce traffic, improve air quality, and support our public transit system. We've worked closely with partners across government and with community members over the last four years to develop a plan that will achieve these goals.” Politico reports: “Circumstances have changed and we must respond to the facts on the ground and not the rhetoric of five years ago,” she said. The decision by Hochul leaves a host of unanswered questions, including how the MTA will make up the expected annual $1 billion in revenue. The money would have gone to a larger $15 billion capital plan for public transportation improvements. More than 50 years ago, an early form of congestion pricing almost came to New York City when Mayor John Lindsay attempted to charge drivers for crossing the East River bridges into Manhattan. While Lindsay's push died in court, one of his chief planners, Sam Schwartz, has been stuck in city traffic ever since.  “Gridlock Sam” is a former New York City traffic commissioner who has studied driving behavior almost his entire adult life. With the June 30 launch of congestion pricing fast approaching, Schwartz joined NY1's Errol Louis to talk about the complicated history of traffic in New York City. Few women have had a bigger impact on New York City politics than Elizabeth Holtzman. A Brooklyn native, Holtzman embarked on a political career over 50 years ago. She was an aide to Mayor John Lindsay in the late 60s and then became the youngest woman at the time ever elected to Congress at 31 years old. She was also the Brooklyn district attorney and the New York City comptroller — the only woman ever to hold either of those positions. Holtzman joined NY1's Errol Louis for a look back at her many years in politics. They discussed her role in the Nixon impeachment investigation while serving on the House Judiciary Committee in 1974. They also touched on her long relationship with President Joe Biden, her thoughts on Republican candidate Donald Trump, and the many accomplishments of women in politics since she started. Finally, she explained what made her initially enter public service and why it still matters to her. In the fall of 1968, New York City teachers went on strike three times, in reaction to an experiment in community control of schools in Ocean Hill-Brownsville, Brooklyn. The third strike was the longest, and the ugliest. The movement for community control tapped into a powerful desire among Black and brown people across New York City to educate their own. But the backlash was ferocious. The confrontation at Ocean Hill-Brownsville fractured the connection between teachers and families, between the labor movement and the civil rights movement, between Black and Jewish New Yorkers. Some of these wounds have never really healed. But as the strike dragged on for seven weeks, schools in Ocean Hill-Brownsville were open for business. And for many students there, the experience was life-changing.CREDITSProducers / Hosts: Mark Winston Griffith and Max FreedmanEditing & Sound Design: Elyse BlennerhassettProduction Associate: Jaya SundareshMusic: avery r. young, Chris Zabriskie, Blue Dot SessionsFeatured in this episode: Dolores Torres, Rhody McCoy, Al Shanker, Father John Powis, Leslie Campbell, Lisa Donlan, Charlie Isaacs, Sandra Feldman, Cleaster Cotton, Veronica Gee, Monifa Edwards, Sufia De Silva, Steve Brier, Paul Chandler, Rev. What does it mean to say that a city can “die”? As Brian Tochterman shows in this compelling intellectual and cultural history, motifs of imminent death—of a “Necropolis” haunting the country's great “Cosmopolis”—have been a persistent feature of discourse on the probable fate of New York City since the Second World War. The Dying City: Postwar New York and the Ideology of Fear (University of North Carolina Press, 2017) traces this “spatial narrative” across many domains of thought and cultural production: fiction and essays, planning theory and practice, humanistic and social-scientific criticism in the public square, and film in the age of Charles Bronson's Death Wish. Throughout, Tochterman shows that New York intellectuals of diverse political inflections have made specters of urban “ungovernability” central to how America and the world look at New York—whether to compel remedies, to render the city's very chaos alluring, or, especially, to argue for the futility of intervention. Tochterman sheds new light on such figures as E. B. White, Mickey Spillane, Robert Moses, Jane Jacobs, Daniel Bell, Irving Howe, Lionel Abel, Michael Harrington, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Nathan Glazer, and John Lindsay, among other compass points in the urbanism and intellectual life of postwar New York. Between “Fun City” and “Fear City,” a new image of the metropolitan past, present, and future comes into focus. Peter Ekman teaches in the departments of geography at Sonoma State University and the University of California, Berkeley. He received the Ph.D. from Berkeley in 2016, and is at work on two book projects on the cultural and historical geography of urban America across the long twentieth century. He can be reached at psrekman@berkeley.edu.
