I explore a growing tension: How did innovation, once hailed as progress, end up dismantling industries that were built for long-term sustainability?Together, we'll unpack how tech platforms—like Uber, Airbnb, Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube—shifted costs and risks away from companies and onto everyday people. We'll examine the trade-offs: from rising living expenses and fragmented media to the creative burnout affecting artists and storytellers. This isn't about easy answers—it's an exploration of the hidden consequences behind the "disruption" narrative, and a reflection on what it might take to build a more balanced future for creators, workers, and audiences alike.Stay curious. Stay critical.
These days, most people automatically think of technology when they think of innovation, but innovation doesn't require fancy digital bells and whistles. In fact, sometimes the most impactful innovations aren't about dramatic invention, but rather incremental iteration. Philanthropy is a field that's rife with opportunities for iteration, and Gloria Dixon, BECU's Director of Philanthropy and the Executive Director of the BECU Foundation, isn't afraid to challenge the status quo. As one of the top five largest credit unions in the United States, Washington-based BECU is known for its massive breadth, but what's remarkable about the credit union's community development work is that its impact runs both wide and deep. In this month's episode, we talk to Gloria about how she's steering the credit union's philanthropic efforts and iterating as she goes. We also address our BIG question: How can credit unions be more involved in meaningful systems change, particularly when it comes to economic inequality?

“Talking to people from different disciplines pushes your thinking about your assumptions, going out and listening to what other people are doing helps inform the way that you creatively solve the problem that's in front of you. Leaders often are scared by some of these ideas that are coming out of their workforce and that's why they're shutting them down. But if you can demonstrate yourself to be receptive to ideas, then you can help guide a creative future.” Telle Whitney on Electric Ladies Podcast Massive innovation is crucial to meet the scale of the climate crisis, but achieving this is increasingly challenging due to current political and social undercurrents. How can organizations innovate, and how can people within these organizations come together to brainstorm, bringing ideas of their own and improving on others? According to Telle Whitney, innovation must be an intentional, concerted effort that organizations actively adopt. Listen to Telle Whitney, Cofounder of the renowned Anita Borg Institute for Women in Technology & the Grace Hopper Conference – and one of Fast Company's most influential women in technology – on Electric Ladies Podcast. How leaders can encourage courage and risk-taking. Plus, career advice specifically for women in engineering. “To take your career to the next level, learning how to tell your story and what you want is an important skill. [One thing] I probably get from mid-career women more than anything else is the belief that ‘if I do good work, it will be recognised'. That is simply not true. Being able to say, I did this great work, and to be able to tell that to your manager or to the company leader – it is as important as the product development itself.” Telle Whitney on Electric Ladies Podcast Read Joan's Forbes articles here. On this episode of the Scouting For Growth podcast, Sabine VdL talks to Emmanuel Djengue, a dynamic professional whose passion for technology and user-focused innovation has shaped his remarkable career path. From leading tech initiatives to connecting diverse people and ideas, Emmanuel exemplifies the very spirit of relentless curiosity and strategic thinking that we celebrate on this show. We’ll be delving into his personal journey, uncovering how he transforms ambition into concrete impact, and discussing the role collaboration and how talent can play a crucial role in fostering exponential growth as the world goes through a workforce transformation requiring reskilling and upskilling, while finding the talent for the right role across markets. KEY TAKEAWAYS Insurance is a product that no one wakes up in the morning wanting to buy, but it’s super essential to society and people, especially life insurance. We need to be able to help people understand the importance of insurance as well as ensuring that everything we offer to the customer has to be simple, attractive and on the right timing. Health insurance is also very important, how do we help people with this? I’ve studied how people think to figure out how to motivate them to do things. If you bring this element into the innovation of the industry, we’d be able to improve the way people interact with insurance as well as the way they care about insurance and take care of themselves. There are 3 types of InsurTech players: Integrators – the ones that identify and have solutions and want to integrate them into what an insurance company is doing. Disruptors – They want to change everything that doesn’t work well so that it does, these need financial capability to do that, so there are not a lot of startups that can be disruptors. Collaborators – who want to touch base with insurers to try to improve what’s going on The difference between a great and a bad insurer is not so much in the product, efficiency, etc. It’s on the people making the company great. If I need to do more innovation, change things, and bring something different, why not help people to solve this issue? The number on business problem for anyone is unsuccessful hiring. BEST MOMENTS ‘South Africa has one of the most innovative markets in life and health insurance, there are a lot of startups doing great things there.’‘Too many startups turn up to the market to play disruptor roles, but only 1 or 2 players can do this and win.’‘In insurance David is not going to win against Goliath.’‘Both sides need to need the partnership and want the partnership to happen.’ ABOUT THE GUEST From the moment he first tinkered with a computer at a young age, Emmanuel Djengue has been captivated by the power of creativity and innovation to transform lives. His journey—marked by curiosity, resilience, and collaboration—has taken him from passion projects in his hometown to spearheading tech initiatives on a global stage. Along the way, Emmanuel developed a talent for weaving user-focused storytelling into every project, bridging technology and humanity in impactful ways. Fueled by an enduring love of problem-solving, he thrives on connecting diverse people and ideas to craft solutions that don’t just work, but inspire. Whether rallying a team around a new software concept or mentoring future innovators, Emmanuel’s drive to make a positive impact is as unyielding as his imaginative spirit, promising that every new chapter of his story will be just as vibrant and compelling as the last. Refining raw material into metals is both the core of many industries, and also a very tricky process to balance in an age where carbon neutrality is increasingly the goal. What are new ways that can affect this process to better both the environmental impacts and also align with the profit and growth goals of the companies doing the work themselves? Haotian Wang is an associate professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Rice.Bryan Guido Hassin is an entrepreneur and the CEO of Dexmat, a Rice spinout. David, Haotian, and Bryan discuss how Rice research is propelling commercial and business innovation, particularly in mitigating carbon emissions. Exploring their educational backgrounds and career trajectories, David asks Brian and Haotian about their groundbreaking work in sustainable energy solutions and carbon-negative materials. They elaborate on their entrepreneurial journeys, the challenges they face in commercializing research, and the unique advantages Rice University and Houston offer for energy and sustainability research. The conversation concludes with a discussion on aligning profit and impact in climate tech ventures.Let us know you're listening by filling out this form. That's not only because of the energy capital of the world, Houston. We have direct dialogues with a lot of these gas and oil industries that are also pushing forward for their sustainable goals. [22:09] So, I think that's a very unique part of Rice University, sitting in the center of Houston, that can benefit from the collaboration dialogue with the industry.Rice and Houston's edge in energy and innovation22:23: [Bryan Guido Hassin] Something that Houston has that other innovation ecosystems don't is getting all of the world's largest energy companies within a stone's throw away. So, Rice has this incredible privilege and opportunity of being the premier research institution sitting right there at the epicenter, and these are the types of technologies that are going to solve energy, industry, aerospace, and medicine.Aligning profit and impact in clean technology24:00: [Bryan Guido Hassin] In a capitalistic world, the only pathway to scale is when your impact metric aligns with the profit metric, not when it's in opposition to it or takes away from it. And we really should be focusing on business models that align profit, revenue growth, with the kind of impact that we're looking for. And we're seeing more and more of them all the time, which is pretty helpful.Show Links:Rice Engineering and Computing | Department of Chemical and Biomolecular EngineeringRice AlumniAssociation of Rice Alumni | FacebookRice Alumni (@ricealumni) | X (Twitter)Association of Rice Alumni (@ricealumni) | Instagram Host Profiles:David Mansouri | LinkedInDavid Mansouri '07 | Alumni | Rice UniversityDavid Mansouri (@davemansouri) | XDavid Mansouri | TNScoreGuest Profiles:Haotian Wang | Rice ProfileHaotian Wang | Google Scholar PageHaotian Wang | LinkedIn ProfileHaotian Wang | X ProfileBryan Guido Hassin | Rice ProfileBryan Guido Hassin | LinkedIn ProfileBryan Guido Hassin | X ProfileDexmat.com

In this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Tim Danley, a dedicated farmer and tech innovator, about his unique journey into integrating drone technology with agriculture. Tim's path began on his family farm, where he worked during school breaks, and later enrolled in the Air Force as a military policeman. After returning home to manage Danley Farms, he became deeply involved in a range of activities, from overseeing diverse crops to volunteering as a firefighter and leading a search-and-rescue drone team.Tim's adoption of drone technology was driven by his desire to complement, not replace, traditional farming practices. He explained how drones are particularly effective for tasks like targeted spraying on small plots, and while his introduction of drones faced the same skepticism that innovations like GPS in farming once experienced, Tim's efforts to educate others have been key in easing concerns and highlighting drones' practical benefits. One of the most inspiring parts of our conversation was hearing how Tim, a self-taught drone enthusiast, has embraced experimentation and failure as part of his journey. His approach to learning and applying technology highlights endless opportunities in agriculture—opportunities not just for farmers, but also for tech-savvy individuals looking to make an impact.Tim has a passion for putting a human face to farming, connecting with his community, and sharing stories that educate and inspire. Even his neighbors and colleagues have gained new appreciation for the industry through his work. As someone who believes in the power of storytelling, I was energized by Tim's commitment to changing perceptions one video, one story, and one connection at a time.If you're curious about Tim's journey, you can follow him on YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook under "North Wind Aerial." His work is a testament to what can happen when you combine passion, innovation, and a willingness to share your story. In this special episode of On Location, I had the pleasure of speaking with Brian about what we can expect from this year's CES, how it continues to shape the tech world, and what it means for all of us navigating a Hybrid Analog Digital Society.Setting the Tone for the Year in TechAs Brian pointed out, CES is not just an event—it's the launchpad for the year's tech trends. Taking place January 7-10 in Las Vegas, CES 2025 will be a massive showcase of innovation across countless industries, from artificial intelligence to mobility, digital health, energy solutions, and beyond. This year's theme, "Dive In," perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the event. It's not just about experiencing the surface level of emerging technologies but about going deeper—exploring how these advancements interact, converge, and shape our everyday lives. Whether you're an executive closing deals, a media professional discovering cutting-edge innovations, or a curious onlooker reading from afar, CES offers an opportunity to explore the tech-driven future.Human-Centric Innovation at Its CoreCES has evolved from a purely consumer electronics show to something much broader. While enterprise solutions now account for nearly 40% of its exhibitors, the focus remains on human-centric innovation. As Brian aptly said, "Humans are not just consumers; they are patients, workers, collaborators, and creators." The technologies at CES aim to enhance our lives in all these roles.Digital health is a prime example of this shift. This year, exhibitors in this category are moving to the Venetian campus alongside smart home, lifestyle tech, and accessibility solutions, highlighting how these technologies are converging to improve health, wellness, and longevity. From wearables that connect to your smart home to smart mirrors that monitor your mood, CES demonstrates how personalized, data-driven ecosystems can redefine daily living. The Evolution of InnovationBrian and I also discussed the nature of innovation, which he breaks down into two categories: evolutionary and revolutionary. CES showcases both. Evolutionary innovation involves incremental advances, like smarter AI chips in TVs that turn entertainment devices into command centers for your smart home or even tools for telehealth. Revolutionary innovation, on the other hand, includes breakthroughs like nuclear fusion and generative AI—transformations that redefine industries overnight. This year, startups are expected to bring some of the most exciting stories. The Eureka Park pavilion will spotlight companies like Standard Energy, which is developing vanadium ion battery tiles for home energy storage, and Senergetics, which uses AI to predict and prevent corrosion in power plant pipes. Another standout is Glidance, an autonomous guide robot for individuals with low vision, showcasing how innovation can serve diverse needs and create new opportunities for accessibility.A Convergence of Ideas and OpportunitiesAt its heart, CES is about connection—not just connecting devices but connecting people and ideas. It's a place where startups meet industry giants, partnerships are forged, and new possibilities are imagined. As Brian highlighted, the show serves as both a showcase and a platform for collaboration, where the seeds of future innovations are planted.Wrapping It UpCES 2025 is more than a trade show—it's a glimpse into the future of our coexistence with technology. As we prepare to dive into the event, one thing is clear: technology is no longer something we simply use. It's a part of who we are and how we live.I'll leave you with this thought: CES isn't just about what's next; it's about how we can work together to make what's next even better.Mark your calendars for January 7-10, and stay tuned for more conversations as Sean Martin and I bring you the latest stories On Location.Subscribe, follow, and let's explore the future together!____________________________This Episode's Sponsors HITRUST: https://itspm.ag/itsphitweb____________________________Catch all of our event coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/technology-cybersecurity-society-humanity-conference-and-event-coverageWant to tell your Brand Story Briefing as part of our event coverage?Learn More
