#020 - Today we talk with Oakland resident and entrepreneur Aram Cretan of Federation Brewing, a producer of award winning craft beer.  Aram created Federation with his childhood friend and then roped in his retired “banker” dad to keep the books. What started as a home brewing project over 10 years ago grew into brewing for friends' weddings.  I asked Aram when he thought he had business:“You start to realize that you have the germ of a business here when all of a sudden you're spending every weekend on something.  That's not, you know, more than a hobby, but less than a profession.”Before the pandemic, Federation was selling kegs to restaurants and pints to customers in their Jack London tasting room.  When the pandemic hit, they lost 95% of their business.  The pandemic required Federation to pivot to a manufacturing and canning business, selling through distributors - a much different business.  The result was they grew 3x."When COVID started, we were just driving our kegs around Alameda and Contra Costa. That's what we were doing. We were a little East Bay brewery.  Now you can get our beer in cans from Paso Robles up to Redding.  We signed on with two distributors. We produced three times more beer by volume in 2021 than we did in 2020.” You can visit the brewery and tasting room at 420 3rd St. in the heart of Oakland's Jack London Square district.  This is NOT your neighborhood sports bar, however.  When you visit, be prepared to put your phone away and engage with other patrons.Be sure to stick around until the end to hear how Federation's mascot “Keg Bot” is fighting to keep the Town safe for independent beers.

It's Sunday afternoon and I feel like a beer. Its been a big week working from home and as of tomorrow I have my dear children joining me…oh the joys.It could be worse I guess, and I know there are many among us who are doing it pretty tough right now, and my heart goes out to you and your family. I'm not sure there is really much I can do to help, so I'm just trying to help take peoples minds off the shit stuff, even just for a half an hour or so while I tell stories on this podcast. So, I decided that this afternoon I didn't want to drink alone. Instead, I have invited a couple of my mates to join me…the man with the best bear in the Tassie beer industry (sorry Jimmy Anderson) who in the last 12 months broke the no IPA rule at Moo Brew, and also produced a Hazy as well…who can forget half Naked Dave McGill flipping his hair back in the water in their social media campaign. And, joining him is the Tassie Beer scenes Frank Costello…look it up peeps…the guy that brings everyone together, despite differing opinions and agendas, all for the good of keeping the peace and creating an awesome indie beer scene in Tasmaina, Cryer Malts Jon Burridge.Let's crack those cans!!

40 Years Championing Independent Beer in the UK [with Ian Fozard from Rooster’s Brewery and National Chairman of SIBA]

This month, the Society of Independent Brewers Association - SIBA - celebrates its 40 year of championing independent beer in the UK. SIBA has achieved some monumental things, including lobbying for SBR (Small Brewers Relief), helping independent brewers sell their beers into PubCos through Beerflex, and gathering beer professionals from all corners of the industry for Britain's largest brewery trade show - Beer X. SIBA have not been without their troubles over the last 40 years, receiving their fare share of flack when purchasing a major stake in beer supplier the Flying Firkin, as well as grumblings from members and former members over the ABV branding pricing structure when selling to estates such as Greene King and Admiral Inns. However, optimism is on the rise in the relatively newly appointed Chief Executive - James Calder - who has taken a much needed hands on approach with its members, bringing a breath of fresh air to many of its members. It’s been a road of ups and downs for the Voice of British Brewing. Considering the length of time the body has been established in contract to the US equivalent, the Brewers Association, though SIBA does not have the same level of resources at its disposal, the membership and supplier associates club together in regional meetings to offer advice, debate and comradery. So, this week, on the Hop Forward Podcast, we are joining the festivities and wishing SIBA a Hoppy Birthday, bringing an interview with Rooster’s Brewery owner and National Chairman, Ian Fozard. Ian has an extensive history in the beer industry, running various pubs and a large brewery and taproom based on the outskirts of Harrogate. In this episode, we discuss many of the issues SIBA members - and any independent brewer - faces on an everyday basis: beer duty, pricing, running a business, developing a brand, and making beer! --- Follow us on social media

With a continual list of local Arizona bands as well as bands traveling across the country, they want to make sure their guests get the full audio experience. When Bonnie and Product Manager Paul Rosevear threw out the idea of doing a podcast live in front of their patrons it was a no-brainer for me.  We landed on the polarizing topic of "big beer and independent beer" as a discussion point. No slouches ourselves Bonnie and I would be on this discussion panel but with such a complex topic we knew we needed some big guns to join in on this discussion. Leah Huss of Huss Brewing Company is a badass brewery owner and one of the most experienced beer personalities in Arizona craft beer. She's in! As the former president of the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild and a wealth of knowledge when it comes to anything craft beer related Ken Wilson from Lumberyard Brewing Company was our second Sorachi Ace in the hole. To round it all out my man Keaton aka The Brewz Traveler came to bring in the perspective of a devoted craft beer enthusiast.  In this episode, we all sit down and talk about this complex subject of "big beer" and independent craft beer. As you will see it's not quite as simple as a quick "f***k big beer". There is much more to this story than meets the eye. Enjoy the show! The plan is to have one of these live episodes (each with a new topic and panel) every few months so be on the lookout for the next one Thanks to Irene's Taproom for being awesome hosts!
