My guest for this episode is Dr. Nicholas Morton, whom you may remember from our first episode about the Mongols. Today Nick and I will be talking about crusading warfare, in particular, about the military activities and challenges faced by the Crusader States established in the Levant by the First Crusade. Among the topics we will discussing are the different approaches to warfare practiced by the European Crusaders and their Turkish and Fatimid adversaries; how the crusaders and the leaders of the Latin Crusader states adjusted--or failed to adjust--to the novel challenges presented by warfare in the Middle East; why the First Crusade succeeded while the others failed; and whether, militarily, the Crusader states were doomed from the start.Recommended reading:Nicholas Morton. I don't recall exactly how I connected with Mikey on Instagram, but I noticed we started interacting more and more. One day he would be posting up about cyanotypes and the next day he would be doing wet plate. After hearing that he had only been shooting film photography for about 2 years, I had to get him on the podcast and get his interview. We're back! This series we are focussing on the patient and their experiences of medicines and we start with a cracker! Graham brings his expertise working for the pharmaceutical industry and as a pharmacologist (and one of the people behind the superdrug Tamoxifen) to helping people understand and use their medicines through the fantastic website www.meandmymedicines.org.uk. We chat to Graham about his own experiences taking medicines and the approach of the health services to supporting patients in taking theirs. How much has it improved in the last twenty years or has it got worse? Graham argues that we are handing a huge responsibility to patients when we prescribe a medicine - is it fair to expect them to take on that burden without more support? In our micro discussion we are looking at the Sunday Times Article “The NHS is flatlining. Here's how to save it right now”. In it, health Editor Shaun Lintern suggests 10 ideas that he thinks might ‘save the NHS'. Well, we reckon our guests can do better and so for this series we are asking for their ideas on how they might improve the health of the NHS - what will be their ingredient for ‘Aural Apothecary 2023 NHS Tonic!'As with all of our guests, Graham shares with us a Memorable Medicine, a career anthem and book that has influenced his career. Justine Prestwich has a diverse background. She was originally a student of literature and philosophy gaining an MA at Edinburgh many years ago, before working in broadcasting and the film industry for a decade. Justine was then catapulted onto a less traveled path of self discovery, when crisis forced her to completely reassess her life and move into deep exploration of healing, mysticism and consciousness. She was immersed in a Sufi mystery school for five years, took a number of graduate degrees and courses in different healing modalities over the next two decades including massage, structural integration, clinical hypnosis, breathwork, core energetics, family constellation, walking in your shoes, family energetics, the enneagram, astrology, and breathwork. Justine assists people to navigate their way through constricted externally focused terrain into the expanse of deeper, more fluid inner waters. Justine has coached individuals both in private practice and for other companies over many years, became a mother, a courtroom mediator, and a voice actor along the way.

“There were no male housekeepers and there were no female chefs. So everyone was in their ‘rightful place’ until I upset things.” Mary-Ellen McTague, owner of The Creameries and founder of the much-lauded Aumbrey in Prestwich, launched her career at the Michelin starred Sharrow Bay before working alongside Heston Blumenthal, and in the last year has fed 31,000 vulnerable people through her project, Eat Well Manchester. In this week’s episode, Anna (https://twitter.com/annarrose) and James Prestwich (https://twitter.com/_Prestwich) chat with Phil Daian (https://twitter.com/phildaian) and Stephane Gosselin (https://twitter.com/thegostep) from the Flashbots (https://github.com/flashbots/) project. Flashbots is a research and development organization formed to mitigate the negative externalities and existential risks posed by miner-extractable value (MEV) to smart-contract blockchains They talk about the Flashbots organization and mission as well as the evolving opportunities and dangers lurking in the mempool. Miner extractable value (MEV) (https://arxiv.org/abs/1904.05234) is a measure devised to study consensus security by modeling the profit a miner (or validator, sequencer, or other privileged protocol actor) can make through their ability to arbitrarily include, exclude, or re-order transactions from the blocks they produce. A virtual devotional address by Daniel Prestwich, Institute of Religion Instructor, delivered January 19, 2021.
Guests:Alex Gluchowski (@gluk64)John Adler (@jadler0)Host:Richard Yan (@gentso09)James Prestwich (@_prestwich, special co-host)Today's motion is “ZK rollup has a better set of security/scalability tradeoff than Optimistic rollup.”Rollups are a class of layer-2 Ethereum scalability solutions. They allow an off-chain aggregation of transactions inside a smart contract. Users can transact inside the contract with security guarantees, and they will settle to the mainchain at some future point.ZK and optimistic rollups are different in the way they ensure the validity of these transactions that are being kept off-chain.The ZK approach uses math. It bundles the transactions, compresses them, and adds a zero-knowledge proof that indicates the validity of the state transitions. When the transaction is sent to the mainchain, the block is verified by the attached zero-knowledge proof. The optimistic approach uses economic incentives. An operator publishes a state root that isn't constantly checked by the rollup smart contract. Instead, everybody hopes that the state transition is correct. However, other operators or users can challenge the validity of the transactions, revert the incorrect block, and slash malicious operators. We compared the two approaches from the standpoint of security, usability, capital efficiency of exits and more.Today's debaters are John Adler and Alex Gluchowski. John is the proposer of the original construction of the optimistic rollup and cofounded Celestia, and Alex is implementing a ZK rollup at Matter Labs. Our co-host James Prestwich is a security consultant and auditor for solidity contracts, among many other things. If you're into crypto and like to hear two sides of the story, be sure to also check out our previous episodes. We've featured some of the best known thinkers in the crypto space. If you would like to debate or want to nominate someone, please DM me at @blockdebate on Twitter. Please note that nothing in our podcast should be construed as financial advice.Source of select items discussed in the debate:Coindesk's layman guide for rollups: https://www.coindesk.com/ethereum-dapps-rollups-heres-whyAlex Gluchowski on the difference between the two rollups: https://medium.com/matter-labs/optimistic-vs-zk-rollup-deep-dive-ea141e71e075John Adler explains optimistic rollup: https://medium.com/@adlerjohn/the-why-s-of-optimistic-rollup-7c6a22cbb61a Celestia: https://celestia.org/Fuel Labs: https://fuel.sh/Matter Labs: https://matter-labs.io/Debater bios:Alex Gluchowski is co-founder of Matter Labs, currently working on scaling Ethereum with zkSNARKs. He was previously CTO of PaulCamper, an online platform for sharing campervans and caravans in Europe.John Adler is co-founder of Celestia and Fuel Labs. He is the original proposer of the optimistic rollup construction. He previously did layer-2 research at ConsenSys. Interestingly, he is a self-proclaimed blockchain skeptic.James Prestwich founded cross-chain solution company Summa, subsequently acquired by the layer-1 blockchain firm Celo. He previously founded Storj, a decentralized cloud storage provider.
The founder of Summa speaks to The Defiant about why he has become disillusioned with decentralized finance. Stories of financial inclusion are much rarer than stories of somebody raising hundreds of millions in a token sale or people throwing money at the latest yield farming protocol. Still, he’s encouraged by the fact that it is much easier to launch a financial service than it ever has been before.

James Lovejoy, recent MEng MIT grad and former graduate researcher at the MIT Digital Currency Initiative, joins the show to talk about his masters thesis and associated project focusing on detecting double-spends in proof of work cryptocurrencies. Previously, little data was collected in a systematic way to detect double-spends and reorganizations across many cryptocurrencies. James' project sheds light on previously unknown security properties of PoW. In this episode: How James came to work on Vertcoin Why James thinks ASIC resistance is valuable James' blockchain monitoring project and why it matters Why reorgs are challenging to detect Why investigating the economic damage of reorgs is difficult How James noticed a 51% attack in progress on Vertcoin and intervened to save Bittrex money – and how this can be replicated Why understanding Nicehash is critical to detecting and dealing with 51% attacks James' critiques of dominant theoretical models of PoW security How James found reorgs and counterattacks happening on BTG in real time Why exchange processes like KYC might actually help protect blockchains from reorgs How permissionless trading and leverage makes certain blockchains more vulnerable to attacks Rules of thumb for confirmation requirements for exchanges The issue with calling coins "Nicehash-able" – and why it's likely a lowball How exchanges can proactively mitigate the risk of 51% attacks and what they should be targeting How BTG developers finally defeated deep reorgs Whether James is confident in the long-term prospects of PoW Whether James still believes in GPU mining Content referenced in this episode James Lovejoy, An Empirical Analysis of Chain Reorganizations and Double-Spend Attacks on Proof-of-Work Cryptocurrencies Raphael Auer, Beyond the doomsday economics of “proof-of work” in cryptocurrencies Eric Budish, The Economic Limits of Bitcoin and the Blockchain Hasu, Prestwich, and Curtis, A model for Bitcoin's security and the declining block subsidy Carlsten, Kalodner, Narayanan, Weinberg, On the Instability of Bitcoin Without the Block Reward Moroz, Aronoff, Narula, Parkes, Double-Spend Counterattacks: Threat of Retaliation in Proof-of-Work Systems Judmayer et al, Pay-To-Win: Cheap, Crowdfundable, Cross-chain Incentive Manipulation Attacks on Cryptocurrencies Liao and Katz, Incentivizing Blockchain Forks via Whale Transactions James Lovejoy and David Vorick, ASICs and cryptocurrencies: benefits and drawbacks [debate] Nic Carter, It's the settlement assurances, stupid [blog] Elaine Ou, Cryptocurrency Deals can Always be Erased, for a Price [article]

It goes without saying that DeFi is better with Bitcoin as collateral. And there is an appetite among BTC holders for ways to actively apply our money. But as of yet, there is no way to bring Bitcoin onto Ethereum that is censorship-resistant and adheres to the #1 principle of BTC: No printing money. Until now. The newly formed Cross-Chain Group is working on a project that facilitates interoperability known as tBTC Network. Matt Luongo and James Prestwich are the crypto OGs behind tBTC, a decentralized, redeemable, BTC-backed ERC-20 token that gives Bitcoin users access to financial services on other chains. Today, they join us to discuss how their respective expertise in secure multiparty computation and stateless SPV led to their partnership on tBTC and the founding of Cross-Chain Group. Matt and James explain the technical and economic guarantees of tBTC that satisfy Bitcoin users and offer us a high-level overview of the system’s functionality, including how tBTC is minted and redeemed. Matt and James go on to cover how tBTC signing groups are selected and how the system ensures they are behaving honestly, discussing how the network handles aborts versus fraud and its backup auction mechanism for sourcing liquidity when slashing conditions happen. They also explain their decision to launch with an authority-based price feed mechanism and later transition to a federation-based one. Listen in for insight around what the success of tBTC might mean for Ethereum and learn how Cross-Chain Group is working to further interoperability via collaboration and development in the crypto space. While trustless interactions on Ethereum are native to the protocol, trustless interactions between the Ethereum blockchain and other blockchains are difficult to implement. Interoperability protocols heavily rely on atomic swaps, which typically come with a free option problem. For this episode we’re joined by James Prestwich, CEO at Summa. Summa designs and implements cross-chain financial contracts and instruments such as swaps, options, futures, and auctions. Summa recently conducted a dutch auction spanning the Bitcoin and Ethereum blockchains: Ethereum NFTs were auctioned off trustlessly to bidders on the Bitcoin network. We also discuss Riemann, a framework for deploying transaction scripts to UTXO-based chains, as well as the advantages of the predictability of transactions in UTXO-based chains and how to bring some of those advantages to Ethereum smart contracts. Topics covered in this episode: James background in Japanese and how he became interested in blockchain James contributions to Bitcoin Script Summa’s recent cross-chain auction in which Ethereum NFTs were auctioned off to participants on the bitcoin network Riemann, a framework for deploying script based transactions to UTXO blockchains Atomic swaps leading to free options Advantages of transaction predictability in UTXO based chains Episode links: Summa Website Cross-chain Auctions via Bitcoin Double Spends (article) Statesless SPV (article) Declarative Smart Contracts (article) Introducing Reimann (article) James Prestwich on Twitter Thank you to our sponsors for their support: Deploy enterprise-ready consortium blockchain networks that scale in just a few clicks. Clearly we’re obsessed with Clickhole because this week we have another amazing writer, Noah Prestwich on the show! We (me, Rebecca, writing this) love this episode for so many reasons so you just need to listen to it to find out WHY. Noah is telling Rebecca about a fifth grade crush experience that was integral in forming guilt-based anxiety, while Rebecca is talking about “HUNTER”, a guy in high school she thought was really hot and (spoiler alert) had sex with. Did Noah murder his fifth grade crush? Why did Rebecca make sexual moves instead of emotional connections? PLUS: shared checking impulses, Rebecca and Noah need to go to therapy, feeling deserving of a relationship, not knowing what is “normal” behavior, adolescent fashion, Rebecca feeling like Oprah, and all of the good things you’d ever want in a podcast and we feel confident in saying that. This really make you feel like Christmas has arrived. Lucy describes the incredible success of Besses o’ th’ Barn Band just after the war. We begin with a musical introduction by the modern day Besses o’ th’ Barn Band recorded at the Longfield Suite in Prestwich, Greater Manchester. Looking at some old photos we find out what type of musical instruments are used in a brass band (no strings attached). We find out just how ‘inconvenient’ it was to have an unreliable tour bus! The interview ends with yet more sound from the Besses o’ th’ Barn Band with a rendition of The Christmas Song (you might know it as "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire").
Dennis tells us about working at the dyeworks in Prestwich Clough during the last few weeks of its operation in the 1950s. He tells us how the man in the bowler hat was devastated by its closure. Having been a major contributor to the economy of Prestwich, it really marks the demise of the industrial revolution in the North-West. In particular, he tells us about working at the stenter machine. He explains how the word ‘tenterhooks’originates from the dyeing industry. Fabrics were once dried in the open fields (tenter fields) on a tenter frame. His nephew, John (whose mother also worked at the dyeworks), tells a story about a worker at the Prestwich dyeworks that ‘temporarily’ discovered the recipe for the perfect black dye.
