Jeannette is joined by the one and only Kate Nicholls OBE, who shares her journey through the dynamic world of travel, tourism, and leisure, highlighting the significant opportunities and challenges facing the hospitality sector today. With a focus on social mobility and the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion, Kate discusses her various roles, including her work as a disability ambassador and menopause champion, reflecting on the impact of COVID-19 and Brexit on the industry, and emphasising the need for effective communication and collaboration with government entities. KEY TAKEAWAYS The hospitality industry is characterised by its dynamism, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit, allowing businesses to adapt and reinvent themselves in response to challenges, such as those faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The sector offers significant opportunities for social mobility, enabling individuals with no prior experience or qualifications to quickly advance to management positions through training and investment in their development. Hospitality encompasses a wide variety of businesses, from independent coffee shops to large hotel chains, making it a vital part of the community and economy, contributing significantly to employment and tax revenue. Effective leadership in the hospitality sector involves actively listening to the concerns of both small and large businesses, understanding their common challenges, and articulating these needs to government and media to advocate for necessary changes. BEST MOMENTS "The sector is so dynamic, so innovative, that it always works hard. The people within it always look at how can they make the best of a bad situation." "You can't be what you can't see. If you don't have that, or if you have something that doesn't show where you can go, that's quite difficult." "I always say I've got the best job in UK PLC because I've got that diversity and breadth." "I knew I'd got my sector through it. I knew I'd got the people, the teams." "It's about relationships. It's about trying to see the best in people." This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. The Learning & Development Podcast

Stepping into a new L&D leadership role is challenging, and establishing both yourself and your team can be even harder. It’s not just about filling gaps—it’s about aligning your vision with the business’s needs and building a strategy that delivers tangible results. In this episode, Sam Allen, Global Head of Learning and Development at Ideagen, shares how he has navigated this journey, from understanding the company’s culture and expectations to creating an L&D strategy that drives real performance. Sam talks about the key steps to establishing yourself in a new L&D role: how to build trust with stakeholders, identify the right learning needs, and bring your team on the journey. If you're a new L&D leader or looking to reposition your team, this episode offers real-world insights into how to take L&D from a function to a business partner. KEY TAKEAWAYS Work really hard to understand where the business you have joined is going. Identify the decision makers and sit down with each one to find out what their priorities are and where they are heading. To do this you need an effective way to take notes and analyse what you learn. Assess how your team currently performs. Make it clear to everyone what your approach to L&D is. Acquire the right tools for your L&D team and for your stakeholders. Set up self-serving learning resources that enable departments to fill skill gaps themselves. Break skills content down to enable truly targeted learning. Establishing yourself is about creating a strategy that truly drives business impact. BEST MOMENTS “How capable are the team members within that organisational structure?” “Build credible relationships with stakeholders.” “Create content where there are gaps.” Sam Allen Bio Sam Allen is the Global Head of Learning and Development at Ideagen, where he leads the company’s L&D strategy to drive performance, capability, and career growth. Before joining Ideagen, Sam was the Interim Head of L&D (Central Functions) at Cazoo, where he established the central L&D function, delivering leadership programs and automating onboarding and compliance. Before that, Sam founded Insightful People, partnering with businesses to deliver strategic L&D projects. He also held senior L&D roles at Whitbread, developing management teams, and at Argos, where he led the L&D strategy for IT, Digital, and Marketing, supporting around 500 colleagues and delivering high-potential and leadership development programs. What if the toughest battles aren't fought in stadiums, but in the shadows of a broken childhood? In this profoundly moving episode, Fatima Whitbread shares a story that goes far beyond athletic triumph—it's one of survival, courage, and an unyielding spirit. Born into abandonment and forced to navigate the brutal realities of the care system, Fatima's early years were a battle against neglect, trauma, and profound loneliness. But from the ashes of her childhood emerged something remarkable: an iron will and a resilience that would not be crushed.Fatima opens up about the inner demons she faced, the darkness that nearly consumed her, and the life-changing influence of two incredible women—Auntie Ray and, later, Margaret Whitbread—who gave her the family she never knew. This isn't just a sports story; it's a testament to the power of the human spirit. It's about how, when pushed to the edge, we can rise not only for ourselves but for those generations who follow. From setting world records to standing on countless podiums and becoming a world champion, Fatima reflects on her greatest battles, which were not fought on the athletic field but within herself and traumas faced. Today, through her advocacy, she's using her platform to champion the rights of children in the care system—children, like her, who deserve a chance to rewrite their own stories.Timestamps:00:00 – Where It All Began01:28 – Life Beyond Sport02:52 – Inside the Children's Homes05:48 – The Power of Love09:42 – Confronting Trauma15:47 – Discovering Javelin21:11 – Becoming a Whitbread23:30 – Campaigning for Change29:16 – Early Training29:43 – Breaking Barriers30:26 – World Records & Olympic Dreams31:09 – The Weight of Triumph31:47 – Facing Mental Health Challenges33:48 – Navigating the Darkest Moments34:34 – The Pressure of Media & Writing Her Story39:07 – The Olympic Journey44:45 – Making Her Voice Count45:04 – From Athlete to TV Star51:43 – Legacy56:46 – Final ThoughtsThis isn't just a story of sporting success—it's an exploration of what it means to persevere, to push through adversity, and to transform suffering into strength. Fatima's journey is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, and her insights into overcoming trauma and turning pain into purpose will resonate long after the episode ends.If you want to witness the real person behind the medals, watch the full conversation on YouTube. This week, Claire Pedrick, Nathan Whitbread, and Kim Witten open up the conversation around Coaching and Neurodiversity.   They discuss the misconceptions surrounding coaching neurodivergent thinkers and emphasise the importance of simplicity in the way coaches coach.    Takeaways Coaching neurodivergent individuals requires an understanding that we are all experts in our own experiences and ways of thinking. Simplicity in questioning is crucial when working with neurodivergent thinkers, as complex questions can shift the focus away from the work at hand. Measuring progress and success should be individualised and focused on movement and the feeling of growth. Creating a supportive team and knowing when to reset are essential in coaching neurodivergent thinkers. People are becoming more willing to openly share their neurodivergent experiences, allowing for more open and effective coaching conversations. Trust and partnership are crucial when discussing neurodivergence in coaching. Diagnosing and labelling should be approached with caution, focusing on supporting people rather than categorising them. Self-disclosure as a coach can create connection and trust, but it should be done in a way that serves the other's needs. Coaches should prioritise being present and authentic, allowing clients to be 100% themselves in the coaching space.   Contact: Claire Pedrick Kim Witten PhD Nathan Whitbread and stay connected as they write the book through https://neurodiversityincoaching.wordpress.com/   If you like this episode, subscribe or follow The Coaching Inn on your podcast platform to hear new episodes as they drop.  You  can watch this episode, with subtitles on our YouTube Channel   Coming Up:  Next: The Evolution of Coaching as an Industry with Janet Harvey MCC, Dorothy Siminovitch MCC and Claire Pedrick MCC Soon: Psychological Safety in Coaching with Timothy Clarke   Key Words coaching, neurodiversity, neurodivergent, misconceptions, simplicity, progress, success, movement, individualised, questioning, neurodivergence, coaching, trust, partnership, individuality, self-disclosure

It's been confirmed four Kent restaurants owned by the same company will be closing. They're all owned by Whitbread, which is also the owner of Premier Inn, which earlier this year confirmed plans to convert 112 of its low-performing restaurants into hotel facilities and to sell 126 of its branded restaurants. Also in today's podcast, a woman has now been charged with murder after a 25-year-old man was stabbed.Police were called to Harrietsham yesterday afternoon but the victim later died in hospital. School children have been stuck on a bus home for hours during traffic “madness” that brought drivers to a standstill in Sittingbourne.Pupils arrived home at 7.50pm on Monday, despite being picked up at 4.30pm.A cruel dog owner hacked out their pet's identification microchip before dumping the animal to wander the streets wounded. The injured young lurcher was found in Ashford with an ugly gash to its back and taken in by the dog warden. And there are fears a new McDonald's planned for Dover would spill over onto a former graveyard where there are still burials.  Fast food bosses are calling on the public to support their proposal for a new restaurant next to church ruins.

#141 | Our role in platforming independent beer – The Brook, Brentford

Brewers Journal Podcast

How much do you know about your local and the people that run it. Why they do what they do. What they enjoy about this profession. What they enjoy....less so. Be it core classics or specials and seasonals, the independent on-trade is essential in offering a platform to countless brewery's beers. And for patrons and producers in West London, they're fortunate to have a brilliant pub that does just that. Run by husband and wife duo Tim and Tosh, alongside canine companion Dexter, The Brook is part of the rich beer and brewing fabric of Brentford. After running a wealth of London's best-known pubs, giving a boost and a stage to excellent, independent, beer is a huge part of their raison d'être. The Brook was founded as 'The Royal Oak' beer house in 1787 and it was originally a standard corner property, later expanded into properties in New Road. It belonged to the Royal Brewery of Brentford. The Royal Oak was licensed as a public house by 1894 and it was built in its present form in that year 1894, possibly being partially rebuilt in the 1920s. The Strawberry House beer house was established by 1871 at 33 New Road where a member of the Gomm family (the brewers) was noted as a beer seller there. It was probably named after the large area of market gardens that used to exist in the area between Brook Road and Ealing Road. One of the market gardeners, Thomas William Beach, founded a jam factory in Brentford and he won awards for his strawberries at the Great Exhibition in 1851. The beer house was closed after 1896 by which time it was known as The Patriot. Licensees of The Royal Oak included John Carter (1869), Richard Lewis (1870), Elizabeth Gardner (1894), Boaz Stallwood (1901) and Albert Coles (1914-1937). Stan Johnson was the landlord of The Royal Oak until 1960. By 1957 Stan had decided that he would become a publican and he moved to The Royal Oak after completing his training at The City Barge at Strand on the Green. In 1960 Stan and his wife moved to the Midlands, first in Walsall and then in Bridgnorth. The Royal Oak was closed for some time and re-opened as 'The Brook' in June 2019 with Tim and Tosh Rider as the owners. Tim explains: "My introduction to the pub trade was Godolphin's just near Brentford Lock in 1989. My stint there made me realise I had a genuine love for the hospitality pub trade…so, thank you Brentford for that! I joined Whitbread soon after becoming the manager of The King's Head in Chiswell Street near the Barbican Center. "I met Tosh in The Blue Posts, in Soho, 20+ years ago. We married in 2002 when we were both running Bar Mosko in Holborn, then we spent 10 years at The Tabard in Chiswick followed by 2 years at the Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese in Fleet Street. Between the two of us we have gained strong links and experience within the pub industry. "We took the lease on for The Royal Oak in Brentford in March 2019 and the pub showed real promise plus a chance for both of us to finally put down some roots. The Royal Oak needed some love so after 3 months of getting the pub back into some order, we changed the name to 'The Brook'…it was time for a fresh start. "We are immensely proud of The Brook, how it looks and we are committed to becoming the local “village pub” in Brentford. So come and relax with our great selection of craft ales/beers, great wines, spirits and good food alongside good company and an extensive selection of vinyl and digital music!" In this episode we speak to Tim about the joys, and challenges, of running an independent pub, the importance of connecting with the community, operating in an area synonymous with football but not being defined by it, and the duo's love of pouring brilliant beers from the UK's best.

Whitbread highlighted its strategic objectives and financial health in the recent earnings release. CEO Dominic Paul outlined the company's financial strategy to investors, emphasizing a careful approach to leverage that underpins the various growth initiatives Whitbread has articulated. The company looks to maintain a firm control over their balance sheet while also being opportunistic about growth opportunities. As Paul informed investors, "We've been very clear about our stated ceiling on leverage, which is about 3.5 times, allowing us to remain comfortably investment grade. We want to give ourselves enough headroom to take advantage of high-returning growth opportunities, potential bolt-on M&A, and our capital plans for core new room growth and refurbishments. We are comfortable with being below the 3.5% threshold, but being prudent and not pushing it."The company also demonstrated confidence in their growth strategy and the potential to generate returns, as stated in the earnings call. Whitbread has earmarked £500 million for expanding restaurants and developing integrated restaurant projects. This is designed to accelerate growth and counter underperformance from certain branded restaurants. The company anticipates that broadening its physical presence will attract more customers and boost operational performance.Whitbread provided assurance about the performance of their hotel segment, reporting stable demand trends and a competitive market position. They credited their booking volume and consistent commercial demand to their innovative business strategies, including their advanced digital platform and branding initiatives, which, they believe, have contributed to their top-line growth.Whitbread disclosed their latest efficiency program, rolled out along with the Accelerating Growth Plan during the earnings call. The company identified these initiatives as instrumental in improving returns and margins, refining guest experiences, and securing a competitive position in the market. This comes as a testament to Whitbread's commitment to foster growth and enhance performance across all sectors of their business.Whitbread's CEO also discussed the company's strategic financial maneuvers, stating, "I would say, we're confident, we're going to be able to sell these assets and then we've got a few fallback options anyway." This further underscores Whitbread's agile and adaptable operations, and its readiness to navigate varying market conditions. In summary, based on the information given during the earnings call, Whitbread maintains a relatively positive outlook for its growth strategy. Nevertheless, as with any company operating in a competitive market, Whitbread's growth and overall performance will depend on a variety of factors, including its ability to execute on these strategic plans and financial manoeuvres, as well as external market conditions. The company appears to have multiple levers to pull to drive growth and manage risk, but investors should continue to monitor Whitbread's performance closely. This is a public episode. She gave me love, security, and a sense of belonging. Through her, I learned to call out injustice, not just for myself, but for all those kids who needed a safe and happy childhood. Today, my mission is to be a voice for these children, to bring together partnerships and build the power of sport, providing them with opportunities, focus, and the chance to learn essential life skills. Episode Notes Google is constantly tweaking its hotels platform, and the latest iteration contributes directly to the democratization of the online travel industry, writes Skift Research analyst Pranavi Agarwal. Skift Research conducted a study of Google Hotels platform. Here are three insights from the analysis: paid sponsored listings are dominated by the largest online travel agencies; the introduction of organic results is allowing direct sites and smaller online travel agencies to compete head-on with Booking and Expedia; and Google Hotels prioritizes the direct site in its organic results, with the official site most likely to appear on top, even when it is not the cheapest option.  Next, there have been at least four travel tech acquisitions this month, writes travel tech reporter Justin Dawes.  One of them was by property management system startup Mews, which acquired a small hotel AI startup called Nomi, whose tech is meant to help hotels deliver personalized recommendations based on data that guests provide. If the hotel can keep a profile on customers, then the hotel will have better information they can use to recommend activities and restaurants. And that data sets the groundwork for the useful implementation of future generative AI concierge tools.  Finally, Premier Inn's owner, Whitbread, said a shrinking supply of budget hotels in the UK will strengthen its pricing power for years to come, writes Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O'Neil. Premier Inn, the UK's leading budget hotel chain, said the country's independent budget hotel sector shrunk 10% between 2019 and 2022, with many not expected to reopen. This supply shortage is predicted to last for at least five years, presenting a growth opportunity for Premier Inn. Because of the company's size, it can more easily obtain favorable loans and discounted supplies. Premier Inn also said that repeat guests made 86% of its bookings this year.

Nikki Henderson is no stranger to the 59N family. She's a skipper, a podcaster, master of the Quarterdeck and a dear friend in the community. But when she signs off from these watches, she doesn't quit. You likely know that she's been on heaps of other seafaring adventures, including skippering the famed Whitbread machine, Maiden; the Clipper Round the World Race; and her first attempt the The Race To Alaska with team Sail Like a Girl. I sat down to talk with Nikki about her second, most recent attempt at the R2AK, it's challenges, and what made this one such a successful campaign in what I think is one of the greatest adventure races on earth. -- If you liked this conversation you'll LOVE The QUARTERDECK, 59 North's 'deep dives on the art of seamanship.' What happens when you swivel the lens away from yourself? In this second of a series of Happy High Status takeover episodes, Viv talks to Olympic athlete and world champion javelin thrower Fatima Whitbread, star of I'm a Celebrity and Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Win and fundraiser for Action for Children. Fatima examines how the extremes of a difficult childhood and of athletic excellence in adulthood affected her confidence. Fatima was abandoned as baby and grew up in a series of children's homes where she experienced neglect and abuse before being adopted by her javelin tutor in her teens. She developed her confidence by identifying key people she could trust and by learning to “swivel the lens” away from herself and onto others, not only in order to feel less like a victim but as a way of building self-esteem. What if the key to self-assurance lies not in your relationship with yourself but in how much you can support and shine a light on others?  Viv's new book, Happy High Status: How to Be Effortlessly Confident, is out now. @vivgroskop To support Fatima Whitbread's latest fund-raising go to https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/fatimawhitbread

#376. Onne van der Wal is one of the world's foremost yachting photographers, but he started his career as a vagabond sailor. Growing up in South Africa, Onne rarely went to school and instead hitched rides on whatever racing boats he could, amassing a storied career and finding a home on the high seas. His racing career peaked with his involvement in the second FLYER campaign, where he also first made a name for himself in photography. Andy talked to Onne aboard his Grand Banks motorboat in Annapolis in October to hear his story and philosophy. We were joined by Onne's wife Tenley, Ship's Photographer James Austrums, and Schooner WOODWIND owner & captain, Jen Kaye. -- If you liked this conversation you'll LOVE The QUARTERDECK, 59 North's 'deep dives on the art of seamanship.'
