There's a small stretch of Oakland's shoreline unlike any place else. Nestled between the restaurants of Jack London Square and the modern apartment blocks of Brooklyn Basin sits 5th Avenue Marina. This collection of rusty warehouses, eclectic studios, and surreal art installations recalls a bygone era, when crafty Bohemians dwelled amongst decaying shipyards. Schultz, a man who bought a chunk of this area in 1979, calls it “the neighborhood time forgot.” Although developers have attempted numerous times to dislodge the scrappy community at 5th Avenue Marina, these efforts have been stubbornly blocked, most notably in 2017 when residents formed a nonprofit called SHADE (Shadetree Historical Artisan Development Engine) and purchased the property formerly owned by Schultz. This episode traces the long history of the 5th Avenue Marina, from its days as a World War I shipbuilding facility up through its transformation into an unusual compound sometimes referred to as “Oakland's Riviera.” Our tour guide for this voyage is the legendary Schultz, who is still a feisty storyteller at 88 years old and, like Rihanna or Cher, prefers to go by a mononym. It's Founder Friday! Leaving a legacy and making an impact on the industry is something we all want for our businesses. Few companies get to the place where they can say they have not only achieved this but done so it a way that stays true to their values and traditions, while also artfully evolving with the changing landscape of coffee. Mr. Espresso in Oakland, CA is one such company. Established in 1978 and now celebrating 45 years in business, Mr. Espresso is a specialty coffee roasting company that has stayed true to the Italian coffee culture and roots of founder Carlo Di Ruocco while embracing innovation to inspire the next generation of coffee drinkers. In keeping with the sensibilities of the modern coffee consumer, Mr. Espresso is committed to responsible sourcing, sustainable production and investment in community. Offering wholesale beans, premium commercial brewing equipment, and service and training support, Mr. Espresso made its mark as one of the first full-service, coffee roasting retailers in the U.S. and has since become a trusted supplier to noteworthy restaurants, cafes, bakeries and coffee houses around the San Francisco Bay Area and nationally. Additionally, Mr. Espresso has expanded its online presence and grown its retail customer base well beyond the Bay Area. Mr. Espresso uses traditional wood-roasting methods over oakwood. This technique results in high moisture content and an increased retention of natural oils, producing a complex and full-bodied coffee with less acidity. Mr. Espresso has received numerous high-scoring reviews and accolades over its long history, and is a two-time Good Food Awards winner for its organic single-origin coffees. Founder Carlo Di Ruocco was awarded the 2015 Alfred Peet Passionate Cup, one of the Specialty Coffee Association's most prestigious awards. In early 2023, Mr. Espresso will open a cafe in downtown Oakland, not far from its roastery in Jack London Square. Today we are talking with Carlo DiRuocco's sons, John and Luigi DiRuocco, who Co-Own and run Mr. Espresso. Luigi Di Ruocco is Co-owner and Sales & Marketing Vice President of Mr. Espresso, and Co-owner of The Caffè by Mr. Espresso. An alumnus of Saint Mary's College, Luigi earned a double major in Business Administration and Economics, followed by two years in portfolio accounting. However, in 2001 at age 24, Luigi returned to the family business, drawn by the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the family enterprise. Currently, Luigi is at the helm of the newly opened – The Caffè by Mr. Espresso, in the heart of Downtown Oakland. John Di Ruocco is Co-owner and Vice President of Coffee for Mr. Espresso, and Co-owner of The Caffè by Mr. Espresso. After earning an undergraduate degree in architecture from UC Berkeley. After receiving his degree, he returned to the family business, learning the art of wood-roasting coffee from his father. John went on to become roastmaster in the early ‘90s, and eventually Vice President of Coffee. John has moved the company forward as a leader in both single-origin and blended coffees. John has been instrumental in expanding the offerings to reflect changing coffee preferences, adding distinguished lighter-roasted coffees, most often organic and fair trade in origin. In this conversation we discuss the rich history of this iconic company, their values, traditions, and how they have grown and evolved over the past 45 years! We discuss: The beginning of Mr. Espresso The importance of tradition and craft Creating an authentic product and brand Why wood roasting is unique in method and outcome How they source coffee and approach QC Evolving with the industry Knowing what to say no to and trusting your gut Advice for impact and longevity in coffee Offering a product that appeal widely but keeps tradition Links: www.mrespresso.com Instagram: @mrespressooak @thecaffeoak Listen to these episodes next! 081 : Founder Friday w/ David Schomer of Espresso Vivace

Season 5 Premiere Episode! We're back and well-rested after a grueling June primary season and ready for the November election. Shawn Wilson vacationed in Mexico, Steve Tavares became a fan of ASMR. Recorded in Oakland's Jack London Square, we talk about the city's chronic problems, the Foot Massage Special Tax, in addition, to an in-depth look at gaffe-prone San Leandro mayoral candidate Bryan Azevedo.
#020 - Today we talk with Oakland resident and entrepreneur Aram Cretan of Federation Brewing, a producer of award winning craft beer. Aram created Federation with his childhood friend and then roped in his retired “banker” dad to keep the books. What started as a home brewing project over 10 years ago grew into brewing for friends' weddings. I asked Aram when he thought he had business:“You start to realize that you have the germ of a business here when all of a sudden you're spending every weekend on something. That's not, you know, more than a hobby, but less than a profession.”Before the pandemic, Federation was selling kegs to restaurants and pints to customers in their Jack London tasting room. When the pandemic hit, they lost 95% of their business. The pandemic required Federation to pivot to a manufacturing and canning business, selling through distributors - a much different business. The result was they grew 3x."When COVID started, we were just driving our kegs around Alameda and Contra Costa. That's what we were doing. We were a little East Bay brewery. Now you can get our beer in cans from Paso Robles up to Redding. We signed on with two distributors. We produced three times more beer by volume in 2021 than we did in 2020.” You can visit the brewery and tasting room at 420 3rd St. in the heart of Oakland's Jack London Square district. This is NOT your neighborhood sports bar, however. When you visit, be prepared to put your phone away and engage with other patrons.Be sure to stick around until the end to hear how Federation's mascot “Keg Bot” is fighting to keep the Town safe for independent beers.

Jack London Jack London is known as a writer, journalist and a proud socialist. He was born - John Griffith Chaney, on January 12, 1876 in San Francisco California, in the United States. He died November 22 1916, in Glen Ellen, California. He grew up in a working-class area in the city of Oakland, California. While very young, he observed the inequalities in American society and the struggles of the poor. He was internationally famous for his books -The Call of the Wild (1903), The Sea Wolf (1904) and other literary and journalistic accomplishments. He wrote passionately about the great questions of life and death and the struggle to survive with dignity and integrity. His stories of high adventure were based on his own experiences at sea, in the Yukon Territory, and in the fields and factories of California. His writings appealed to millions worldwide. As a schoolboy, London often studied at Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon, which was a port-side bar in the city of Oakland, California. At 17, he confessed to the bar's owner, John Heinold, his desire to attend university and pursue a career as a writer. Heinold lent London tuition money to attend college. London desperately wanted to attend the University of California in Berkeley. In 1896, after a summer of intense studying to pass certification exams, he was admitted. Financial circumstances forced him to leave in 1897, and he never graduated. While at Berkeley, London continued to study and spend time at Heinold's saloon, where he was introduced to the sailors and adventurers who would influence his writings. Today in the year of 2021, tourists enjoy Jack London Square, which is an entertainment and business destination on the waterfront of Oakland, California, named after Jack London, and owned by the Port of Oakland, it is the home of stores, restaurants, hotels, an Amtrak station, a San Francisco Bay Ferry dock, and the historic Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/uirapuru/message

Our tenth episode of On the Fly is with one of my dear friends and my homie, chef Rob Lam of Perle Wine Bar in Montclair, Town Square Eats in Jack London Square, and his upcoming pet project, Lily, which was on track to open on Clement Street in SF in mid-March, but remains in a state of suspense. I originally called to just check in on him, catch up, hear what was the latest, and how he was doing, but as I was listening to everything he's trying to figure out, I realized that I should actually be recording our conversation. Rob covers a lot of ground, from the role of technology in helping them rise to the current challenge of converting three restaurant concepts to takeout and delivery, to the brutal finances, to looking ahead and mulling over ideas on how to format happy hour, the dining experience, the menu, even what kinds of drinks will work best. He also talks about how they're looking at launching their new restaurant through takeout, and how that experience will tell the story of Lily. I was impressed with his positive mindset about how to approach all these business challenges, and how he believes it's all making him a better restaurateur. But, like any true hospitalitarian, Rob is concerned about what hospitality will look like in this new world—what will be left behind in the guest experience as we knew it, and what’s to come? Lynn Mabry, born in a musical family & raised in church, singing was as natural as breathing. In 1975 she audition for Latin artist Coke Escovedo at the suggestion of a friend. To her surprise, she was hired as one of his lead singers and began performing weekends at the historic King Richards Night club in Jack London Square in Oakland CA., and opened for Earth Wind & Fire. The rest is musical history. A few months later, seeing her professional potential, her cousin Sly Stone (of Sly & The Family Stone) hired her to sing on his solo project “Heard You Missed Me” album, and followed with a promotional tour opening for Parliament Funkadelic and Bootsy Collins. During the tour, George Clinton enlisted Lynn with the other back up singers for many of his production projects. By 1977, she and the other singers were asked to join the band. She toured & recorded with the funk family P-Funl for over 4 years. Through this, Clinton launched and produced her first album as one of the original Brides Of Funkenstein, entitled “Funk or Walk” that topped Billboard’s Top 10 dance charts in 1978. She became a proud parent of her daughter Akasha born in December of ’79. Although she took a 2-year break from touring, Lynn was being sought after, and eventually returned back to the scene in 1981. Touring internationally with Rita Coolidge, and immediately following, became a member of the Talking Heads (’82 - ’84). Starred in their highly acclaimed hit feature film “Stop Making Sense” and video “Naive Melody”. Went on to appear in other musically driven motion pictures such as “Tape Heads” & “The Night Before”. Also appeared in and co-wrote the opening track for “Chasing Popi”. In 1988 she was hired as featured vocalist for George Michael’s ‘Faith” tour & “Cover to Cover” tour in 1991, and on to other tours with Don Henley, Feetwood Mac, and Stevie Nicks. From ’92 thru’94, performed as featured vocalist on tour with Bette Midler and appeared in Midler’s HBO Special “Diva Las Vegas”. Frequently appearing on many variety & award shows including The Tonight Show, David Letterman, Pat Sajack, Grammy, American Music and Image Awards among many others. 2013 appeared on Jimmy Kimmel, and Ellen backing up Kenny Rogers and The Killers. Over the years Lynn has also recorded, toured, and or appeared in videos with artist such as Mick Jagger, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Celine Dion, Eric Clapton, Dave Stewart, Sheila E., Ernie Isley, Chris Isaac, Neil Shawn, and many more, including some of the mega A-list Japanese artist like Namie Amuro, Ichiki Yazawa, Ruichi Sakamoto, Minako Yoshida, and Masayoshi Takanaka. In 1995 retired from touring and ventured into the music business by partnering with world-renowned performing artist & entertainer Sheila E., by becoming Vice President & Executive Director of their newly formed music production company Heaven Productions Music. Shortly after, she began managing Sheila exclusively in 1997 thru 2012. In 2011 launched her new management company White Rose Entertainment & Investment Group and adding to her management roster, songwriter & performer: Havis, Image Producer & Wardrobe Stylist: Roni Burks, and her newest client pop and R&B Artist: Justin Avery. She was featured in the Academy Award winning documentary “20 Feet From Stardom” 2014. In addition to Lynn’s extensive previous music business involvement, she embraces her passion for children as a philanthropist. She is Co-Founder of the Elevate Hope & Elevate Oakland Foundations, promoting music and arts education for at risk youth in public and private institutions, as well as an alternative form of therapy for children with special needs. Music and the arts continue to be her main focus to assist in making a substantial difference in the world. This morning was quite challenging in a good way. I started at 6 AM with David Hardiman, whose Big Band is in its 34th Anniversary Season being celebrated Monday, Jan. 19, in concert, two shows, 8 & 10 PM at Yoshi's San Francisco, 1330 Fillmore. I wanted to have Melanie Demore on also, but I had technical difficulties so I included her in my regular, 8-10 AM show with Clifford Brown Jr., emcee for the “7th Annual Musical Tribute to Dr. MLK Jr.,” Sunday, January 18, at the Scottish Rite Center, 1547 Lakeside Drive, in Oakland. Visit www.mlktribute.com I opened the program this morning with Marcus Shelby, who is also participating in the MLK Music Tribute Sunday. He will be premiering an excerpt of a new work honoring Martin King. Ms. Faye Carol, featured in Marcus' new work, joined the musician/composer in the studio and then stayed on when Melanie joined us. We had a fun conversation, so much so, I could barely get a word in to welcome Clifford Brown Jr., into the studio. The three then had a great time conversing until Ms. Carol had to sign off. Okay, I am trying to let out my breath...whew! Miko Marks calls in on time for her interview at 9 AM, and so do her fans who share with her their appreciation of her work. It was really cool having the live audience. Things were finally moving along well. Miko was joined by Kev Choice, and the two to them spoke about their work, Miko as a country western singer, and Kev as a rap artist whose work seeks to uplift the community, his listeners. They are both performing on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 8 PM, at the Oaktown Jazz Workshop fundraiser at Yoshi's in Jack London Square in Oakland. Visit yoshis.com Wanda's Picks closed this morning with a conversation with Hodari B. Davis and Mike Turner. Mike is a student at Encinal High School, and Hodari is director of National Initiatives for Youth Speaks. They were speaking about "Bringing the Noise for MLK Jr.." the annual tribute on MLK Jr. Day at the Herbst Theatre, 7 PM.
Today, if the Wu Tang interview doesn't happen, we might actually pull something from the archives, maybe my interview with Dr. Lonnie Smith or Donald Harrison. It didn't happen. Instead we spoke to Robert H. King, former political prisoner, Angola 3, and author of the new autobiography, "From the Bottom of the Heap" (PM Press). We also spoke to Gail Shaw, MD, co-founder of itsabouttimebpp.com, an archive and educational organization dedicated to the preservation of Black Pather Party history. They updated us on Herman Wallace and Albert Woodfox's cases. Plus Herman's health. I was to speak to Christian Scott, musician currently in town at Yoshi's Jack London Square, and we'll have to reschedule during his California Tour. The New Orleans native, is on tour with a new CD/DVD "Live at Newport," wonderful product! We closed the show with a track dedicated to Scott's dear friend, who was killed on his wedding day, "Died in Love." Friday, Dec. 5 is still up in the air. What I know for sure is we'll be speaking to someone from ASCAC regarding the conference, maybe Cecil Brown about his Pen Oakland Award. Tune in, it's always fun. I would love to have Sister Souljah on the air. She's here this weekend. We'll also be speaking with honorees and devorah major, who will deliver the key note address at Pen Oakland Awards; other guests include Peter Fitzsimon, who is curator of the Jazz Heritage Center, and the Lush Life Gallery in San Francisco, along with John Handy, muscian and scholar, Lewis Watts, photographer and professor, and Raja Rahim, vocalist. The morning show concludes with a conversation with Boots of the Coup.
