Achaeus the Younger is gone! How? Well, it involves an attempted meddling by Egypt, a flagrant betrayal by a Cretan mercenary, and a stealthy spy mission in the night with a king disguised as a lowly warrior. Red Hills Church - Messages

Pastor Marshall Ochs | March 23, 2025In this message, Pastor Marshall teaches from Titus 2. This chapter emphasizes that a strong church requires healthy households where all members—older men, older women, young women, and young men—live in alignment with sound doctrine through their actions. Paul contrasts the behavior of unfit teachers in the Cretan church with the example Titus should set, teaching that faith and works go hand in hand, and genuine faith produces a distinct, godly life. The Christian life should be a testimony to the truth of the gospel, with one's actions matching their beliefs to give credibility to their words and strengthen the church's witness to the world.

Sex has become one of the most controversial topics in the history of the Church. But the historian Diarmaid MacCulloch shows in his book, Lower Than the Angels, that in the last 2,500 years Christianity has encompassed a much greater diversity of beliefs, including on homosexuality and the role of women. He argues that far from there being a single Christian theology of sex, there have always been a wide range of readings and attitudes. In one of the foundational stories of the Bible, in Genesis, Eve is created as an afterthought, from one of Adam's ribs, to be his companion. The classicist Helen King puts the female body at the centre of her book, Immaculate Forms, and examines the ways in which religion, and medicine, have played a gatekeeping role over women's bodies. The prize-winning poet, Ruth Padel, re-imagines the Christian story of the Virgin Mary – a girl in a Primark t-shirt facing a life shaped by divine will. Her new collection, Girl, unravels the myths and icons surrounding girlhood, and also paints a portrait of the Cretan ‘snake goddess' as she's unearthed and reshaped at the hands of a male archaeologist.Presenter: Amanda Vickery is Professor in Early Modern History at Queen Mary, University of LondonProducer: Katy Hickman

In this special episode of Restorative Works!, host Claire de Mezerville López welcomes Leah Koumentaki, Ph.D., and is joined by co-host Federico Reggio, Ph. D., from the European Forum for Restorative Justice (EFRJ), to celebrate Restorative Justice Week. This episode is part of a special series, "Restorative Justice in Local Communities Around the World," created in partnership with the EFRJ. Join us as we explore Dr. Koumentaki's research and the unique and enduring restorative justice practice known as "Sasmos."  Dr. Koumentaki delves into the heart of this vernacular restorative process, revealing how it continues to serve as a community-driven alternative to the Greek judicial system. Through the lens of Cretan cultural values like solidarity, respect, and belonging, Sasmos offers a powerful model for addressing harm and wrongdoing, while prioritizing reconciliation and the reintegration of individuals into their communities. Dr. Koumentaki's decolonial and critical approach to research challenges traditional Eurocentric frameworks and emphasizes the importance of ethnography in restorative justice practices. By weaving together tradition and innovation, Dr. Koumentaki's work offers valuable insights into how ancient justice systems can inform modern restorative practices. Dr. Koumentaki successfully completed her doctoral studies in Criminology at the University of Essex in 2022. She conducted the first comprehensive and systematic research on the Cretan Sasmos, which she concluded is a vernacular restorative justice process. Dr. Koumentaki's work highlights how Sasmos is closely related to the tradition of justice in Crete while, until today, is employed into highland communities of the island, predominately in lieu of the operation of the Greek judicial authorities. Prior to her doctoral studies, Dr. Koumentaki co-ordinated research projects on restorative justice and other topics related to criminology. During her doctoral research she was involved in teaching as an assistant lecturer in Criminology and Sociology, both at University of Essex and Royal Holloway University of London. She currently works as a lecturer in Criminology at University of Keele. Her research interests focus on social harm, criminality, punishment and justice from a decolonial, critical, and zymological strand of view. Dr. Reggio is an associate professor of philosophy of law and public ethics at the University of Padova. He serves as Senior Researcher at the University of Padua, Professor of Philosophy of Law, and Scientific Director of the Winter School Transforming 21st Century Conflicts. He chairs the Scientific Committee of the EFRJ and is the Scientific Director of the Mediares Journal. Tune in to learn more about Sasmos, the future of restorative justice, and the importance of preserving indigenous knowledge and traditions in our pursuit of fairness and equity.

If you don't think so, try not breathing.”Having received Katrina's orders, off we went. Buffy looked worried and I thought she was going to tear me a new one. The reactions of the Executive Services group when we got there were totally unexpected."Send out the word," Buffy detailed to the first worker she came across, "Madi made a run at Katrina."The woman blanched and headed off. Buffy took me to Katrina's office and pushed me onto the sofa. Paula and Fabiola appeared at the door looking worried."How badly have I fucked up?" I groaned."What?" Buffy blinked in surprise. "You did fine.""I don't understand," I ran my hands through my hair."You're bleeding," Paula remarked."What happened?" Fabiola demanded. Oh, crap. Another layer of the onion. The female 'new hires' weren't only new hires, they were legacies.Buffy, for all her expertise and seniority, wasn't part of the program. I didn't think she was ignorant of the basic agenda. She simply wasn't allowed to know the full scope of the goings on. That was the real reason she and I were at the meeting; because we weren't part of the true conspiracy, thus politically neutral."Cáel was attacked by Madi's assistant," Buffy said. I wanted to correct Buffy and say 'apprentice'. "He defeated her then defeated Madi when she attacked him, though it was a close thing." Oh yeah, Fabiola was part of the conspiracy. She gave this little smug smirk when Buffy got the relationship description wrong then was outraged that I would attack one of her elite.Daphne sailed into the room, took one look at me then grabbed Paula."Let's get him cleaned up," Daphne suggested."He attacked Madi and her apprentice," Fabiola blustered; in Hittite. Daphne looked like she wanted to slap Fabiola. Then they all looked at me.Had I turned away, I would have looked guilty. Instead I let my eyes flicker between the three."What is it?" Paula murmured to me."You are speaking the same language they were speaking upstairs," I enlightened them. "I find that a bit odd.""Don't mention that to anyone," Daphne threatened me."No; you are not my boss," I glared. "Right now I'm working with Buffy and I am being mentored by Katrina. It is their right to know. Of course I can't talk to any outsiders about that because that violates corporate policy.""How dare you," Fabiola came steaming my way."Make the first one count," I seethed as I stood up and got ready to kick her entitled, pompous ass. "I've already put down two conceited bitches and you aren't even in their league." Fabiola stopped and reassessed her situation."Cáel!" Buffy snapped. "Come to my right side." There I went. "Kneel." I knelt. The three newbies were stunned, mouths open and gaping."What; what was that?" Daphne mumbled, referring to my actions. Buffy looked very haughty and superior."Cáel works for me right now," Buffy told them. "That means, within the scope of his duties, he does what I say." The girls were taking in this bizarre scene. "Cáel, if I told you to go over to Fabiola and beat her black and blue, what would you do?""I'd ask you for a good explanation," I answered."She's hurting Katrina's position at Havenstone," Buffy responded. Up I stood. "Kneel," Buffy finished her demonstration as I knelt. She started running her hands through my hair. Not something you would do to a dog unless; well, you went that way. It wasn't like Katrina; this was highly sexually aroused hair-play. "I believe you said that Cáel needed to be cleaned up.""Are you in pain?" Daphne inquired."A half bottle of Aleve wouldn't kill me," I groaned. I was in some serious pain, much of it centered on my cranium. Buffy moved me back to the sofa, which I liked. Her sensually stroking my palm was a bit scarier.More women gathered around the door, whispering and looking my way. Finally Katrina came back to the office. The crowd parted for her. Daphne and Paula returned with some wet cloths and a first aid kit. Without consulting with me, they started peeling off my clothes."What are you doing?" Katrina stared at the two young ladies."Tending to his wounds," Daphne hastily replied. Katrina rubbed her forehead."For a moment try to imagine him doing that to you in a public place," she advised them. They caught on real quick and the strip-down stopped."Cáel, may we tend to your wounds?" Daphne politely requested."Fine by me, but let's keep the pants on. I'll deal with the rug burns at home," I grinned."I knew you boxed and practiced a form of jujitsu, Cáel," Katrina remarked. "I had no idea you were that good.""I also practice ninjitsu," I tried to look innocent. "I tried to put that on my application, but auto-correct kept erasing it.""Does he have a concussion?" one of the normal workers asked Desiree."No, unfortunately not," Desiree snorted. "He's always like that.""Thank you for your martial valor in defending my prestige, Cáel," Katrina spoke loudly. "Your ability to navigate a very difficult situation bordered on the precognitive. It was of great service to the sisterhood of this office.""Is there anything you need?" she tacked on."Gosh, it's almost four o'clock. Since I've been working since three this morning, can I go home early?" I pleaded."No, we are having dinner tonight," Katrina stated."I actually have to clean up the apartment tonight," I lied. "Can I have a rain check?""If you were under any delusion that I was making a request, let me dispel that right now. You are having dinner with me tonight," Katrina smirked."Doesn't that violate;” I mumbled."End of discussion," Katrina declared. "Buffy and Helena, take Cáel to the Men's room and get him cleaned up and presentable. I need the (she then used 3 dead words), to stay behind. We have much to discuss." What did I get out of that little exchange? Buffy and Helena weren't part of the real Havenstone, Desiree was and the fact that naming status positions 'charioteer', 'archer' and 'shield maiden' in Old Kingdom Hittite only confirmed my worst fears. You see, Achilles, Odysseus and their crowd knew these people. They'd frolicked and played with those troublesome Greeks then been raped, slaughtered and enslaved by them. Apparently after 3000 years, these ladies were still pissed about that. We only knew about them today from Greek sources. It stood to reason though, that since they were allies of Troy, they lived in Asia Minor, not Greece. Therefore, they didn't speak Greek of any flavor. That was the language of their destroyers. No, the Amazons would speak the language of their home region from 3000 years ago, the native tongue for their rituals and secret communications, which just so happened to be Old Kingdom Hittite."Tell me what happened," Helena requested while I was leaning against the Men's bathroom sink."Rhada became bored, I was asked to alleviate her boredom with a game of Scrabble, and she didn't like my use of the word 'butt-monkey'," I sighed. "She said it wasn't a word. I explained that she was, in fact, a butt-monkey and she took offense.""Are you sure you don't have a concussion?" Buffy studied my eyes."Can I reliably determine my own mental malfunction? If so; I guess I'm good," I grinned."What really happened?" Helena repeated so I told them the whole story. This was the first time Buffy heard the whole thing in a language she could understand; English."Why didn't you simply let her hit you that second time?" Helena asked. Buffy nodded."Seriously, you two need to get some backbone," I glared at them. They looked peeved. "Listen, those other ladies don't have the right to treat us like crap. We are not doormats, we are facilitators and fuck them if they don't appreciate our worth.""Yet you bowed down to Hayden, Katrina and me," Buffy countered."You are my bosses," I sounded exasperated. "I'm here to learn and that means listening to, and observing, those who have progressed farther than me. That means when you tell me to bow, I presume you have a good reason for it and do as I'm told.""The other new hires don't kneel," Helena pointed out."It's not my fault they are not as smart as me," I snickered. We all knew that was a lie."I hope you make it," Buffy patted my knee. She didn't mean get fired. She meant she hoped I didn't get relocated. I didn't know what that meant yet, but I couldn't imagine it being a good thing.I decided to press my luck."You mean you hope I don't get relocated," I smiled. The two women shot worried looks at one another. "Ladies, I'm twice as smart as I look; well, that still might not be much, but I'm working on it," I chuckled."What do you know about being relocated?" Buffy prodded."Nothing really. I do get this creepy feeling that if I get posted to a corporate holding in Paraguay, I probably won't end up in Paraguay," I shrugged."Are you going to quit?" Helena tag-teamed. She meant, 'are you going to make a run for it?'"Havenstone has corporate resources on all seven continents. Where am I going to go where some insidious Human Resources agent from the company won't hunt me down and try to make me reenlist," I teased them. Translation: I'm not dumb enough to think I can get away. They politely chuckled which meant they knew what I knew about my projected promotion path."What are we going to do about your clothes?" Helena altered course. Ugh."I'll give Katrina official notification that we three are heading over to your place to let you change into something; better," Buffy decided. Better? This was my best suit, or had been.Permission was granted and off we went. Surprise, surprise, security stopped me and got confirmation that I could actually leave the building. Next, we were mugged in the parking lot closest to my apartment building. Technically, it was a legal mugging because the criminal owned the lot from which he extorted the 'parking fee' from us.I was curious to see if I could have the ladies wait in the hallway while I changed. Buffy noticed the fire escape and made sure she loudly pointed that out. In we went and sure enough, they followed me to the bedroom. I began going through my sparse business suit collection."Those look dreadful," Buffy commented. "Where do you shop? Walmart?""Sears," I corrected. Buffy looked cruelly amused."You work for a Fortune 500 company and you shop for your clothes at Sears?" she mocked me."I'm not very good with money," I laid out my second best/now best suit. "I blew all of last month's paycheck on the Ferrari, Catalina 470 and Gulfstream. Stupid, eh?" We both knew I hadn't been paid yet."What did you do with your signing bonus?" Helena plopped down on my bed. "Hey, this is lumpy.""I killed a hobo for it," I teased. "I take no responsibility for whatever diseases you might pick up from sitting on that overly pretentious compost heap." It actually wasn't all that bad. "Besides, what signing bonus? Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 30, 2024 is: syncretism • SING-kruh-tiz-um • noun Syncretism refers to the combining of different forms of belief or practice. // As a scholar of religion, Laila is especially interested in the syncretism of Manichaeism, which was influenced by Christianity, Buddhism, and Zoroastrianism. See the entry > Examples: "Explore the archaeological wonders of Chavín de Huantar, where history comes alive. This village, steeped in cultural richness, provides a journey into Peru's ancient past. 'The village of Chavín de Huántar is an example of how tourism can foster syncretism between religious traditions and ancestral cultural elements, generating experiences with a positive impact for the population and improving the quality of life of its residents,' said the UNWTO [United Nations World Tourism Organization]." — Laura Begley Bloom, Forbes, 26 Nov. 2023 Did you know? The ancient Greeks used the term synkrētismos to refer to Cretan cities allied in opposition to a common enemy. In the early 17th century, English speakers adopted the term in the anglicized form syncretism to refer to the union of different religious beliefs. Three centuries later, lexicographers of the 1909 edition of Webster's New International Dictionary of the English Language added a new definition of syncretism ("the union or fusion into one or two or more originally different inflectional forms, as of two cases"), but this specialized sense is rarely encountered outside of the field of linguistics. Some related terms that you are more likely to encounter are syncretize ("to attempt to unite and harmonize"), syncretist ("one who advocates syncretism"), and syncretic and syncretistic ("characterized or brought about by syncretism").

Undermining the Cretan culture and trying to help Titus learn to bring order, Paul turns to the family and interpersonal structures. There's not a lot of deep theology here, but it's immensely practical: to grow a community of Christ, you need a basic agreement to act like a Jesus follower, and this was a foreign concept to the Cretans.

In this sermon we focus on Titus 1, emphasizing the importance of godliness that is to accompany those who know and believe the truth of the gospel of grace. Paul instructs Titus to identify and appoint leaders in Crete who exemplify godly character and conduct, setting a standard for the church to follow. These leaders should be above reproach, not arrogant or quick-tempered, but hospitable, self-controlled, holy and disciplined. Their lives should reflect the transformative power of the gospel, demonstrating that true godliness springs from knowing the truth and believing the gospel of grace. Paul's introduction in Titus is rich with theological truths, He underscores that he was sent by Jesus for the faith of God’s chosen people (elect) and so that they may posses the knowledge of the truth and live godly lives, rooted in the knowledge of the truth. Paul warns against false teachers and apparently a form of legalism, urging Titus to confront those who spread deceptive teachings for personal gain. Paul mentions the hope of eternal life, promised by a God who never lies. He contrasts the trustworthy nature of God with the deceitfulness of the Cretan culture and false teachers. This hope of eternal life that marks Christianity motivates believers to pursue godliness, looking forward to the fulfillment of all that God has promised. Healthy church leadership is crucial for a thriving church. Leaders must model godliness, manage their households well, and hold firm to sound doctrine. They should be able to teach and refute false teachings, ensuring the church remains grounded in the truth. As we grow in our knowledge of God and His promises, and believe them, we are empowered to live in a way that honors Him and benefits the church.

Our coverage of Plato's longest dialogue, The Laws, continues with a discussion on Book II, building on the connection of virtue and happiness that was emphasized in Book I. As the Athenian, Cretan, and Spartan proceed in considering the ideal framework for a constitution, the theme of harmony in the soul and in the community is central to Book II. How are children to be educated, to instill in them a sense of virtue and to find happiness in its pursuit? When members of the Toronto, Calgary, and Chicago Philosophy Meetup groups convened on March 24, 2024, questions were raised about a perceived elitism in Plato and whether his educational approach is a form of indoctrination, any more than modern education might be considered as such. In any event, some form of understanding is required to find virtue in the “general concord of reason and emotion,” and Book II focuses on learning to judge the consequences of pleasure and pain that motivate human behaviour. We'll follow in our next episode with Book III, beginning where Book II ends highlighting the importance of correctly determining proportions and fidelity in representations.

Suddenly, two men, dressed as Wehrmacht soldiers, emerged from the darkness and stopped the car. The two men were British officers, and together with Cretan resistance fighters, they bundled the general into the back, and drove through Heraklion and 22 checkpoints. Then take the weight of six grains of magnetite from the point where it repels the iron… and pulverise it on the marble as finely as possible, sprinkling it a little with the juice of the mandrake apple…” Next, “Take the blood of seven male sparrows, bled via the left wing; of ambergris the weight of 57 barley seeds; seven grains of musk; of the core of the best cinnamon that can be found the weight of 377 barley seeds; of cloves and fine lignum aloes the weight of three deniers [‘pence']; of the arms of an octopus one eyelet from each, preserved and prepared in honey; of mace the weight of 21 grains; of sweet flag the weight of 500 grains; of the root of Lyris Illyrica or Sclavonia [‘Illyrian or Slavonian Lyre'] the weight of 700 grains; of the root of Apii Risus [‘Bee's Laughter'] 31 grains; of Cretan wine double the weight of the whole; of the finest sugar the weight of 700 grains, which is just a little more than an ounce.” Mix all this together and pulverise it thoroughly in a marble mortar with a wooden pestle. Then boil it on a fire till it becomes like syrup (“take care above all that it is not a willow fire”). Then strain. Store in a gold or silver vessel. Cherry Jam HOW TO PRESERVE BITTER CHERRIES in the most delectable and exquisite manner so that, although the process may have been undertaken the previous year, they yet have the appearance of being prepared the very same day. Take about three pounds of the most beautiful and ripest bitter cherries you can obtain (but if they are not fresh, boil them until nothing remains after straining except the stones and skins). If you think that the stalks are too long, shorten them. Then take a pound and a half of sugar and dissolve it in three or four pounds of another bitter cherry brew or juice, making sure that you add the sugar immediately the juice has been extracted. Then put it over the fire and dissolve it only with the said juice. Let it boil as quickly as possible and remove any scum during the boiling. When you have done this to the best of your ability and see that the sugar has turned red and is thoroughly refined and purified, do not remove it from the fire but let it go on boiling and drop the bitter cherries into it. Stir them gently but continuously with a spatula until they are thoroughly cooked and foaming. Still do not take them off the fire until they are cooked right through, so that you do not have to put them on to the fire again. When you put a drop on a pewter plate and see that it does not run, then it is properly boiled, so pour it while still warm into small containers holding three or four ounces. You will then have beautiful red, whole bitter cherries with a 1nost delectable taste which will keep for a long while. I, however, have been to many and varied places in the world and have learned and experienced this and that and how this one does a thing one way and another a different way, so that I should run out of paper were I to attempt to write everything down. I believe, however, that France and Italy excel in this matter, though from what I have seen they go about it in an odd way. So, I have seen it made in Toulouse, Bordeaux and Rochelle and recently, while we are on the subject, also in Genoa, Languedoc, the whole of the Dauphine and in the area round about Lyons, but I have never come across more beautiful and better ones than these. In Toulouse they boil them five or six times and several times in Bordeaux. Eventually, though, when they are five or six months old, some go rotten and bad and useless and others shrivel. If you want to preserve them properly you must use nothing except the juice of bitter cherries, as it increases their goodness, size and taste. For if a sick person takes just a single one, he will consider it as a balsam or other strengthening substance. After a lapse of a year, they are as good as they were on the first day.

On January 21, 2024, Plato's Pod began its extended series on Plato's longest and perhaps most enigmatic and impenetrable dialogue, The Laws, which is said to have been his final work. Members of the Toronto, Calgary, and Chicago Philosophy Meetup groups began by discussing Book X, near the end of the dialogue, which features Plato's cosmology. The immaterial soul, says the unnamed Athenian speaking with a Cretan and Spartan, is the oldest thing in the universe, older than material physical matter and therefore the primary cause of all motion. Our discussion ranged from Plato's definition of "god" and the soul's power of persuasion, to the basis of the soul's laws. Are the laws rooted in universal nature, or in the time-bound variability of convention? Many fascinating points were raised, setting the stage for the second half of Book X in our next episode.

The title of a legendary king and law-giver of Crete. At death, Minos was made supreme judge of the lower world, before whom all the dead appeared to give an account of their stewardship and to receive the reward of their deeds. He was the husband of PASIPHAE and the owner of the LABYRINTH constructed by DAEDALUS. From the name comes the adjective 'Minoan', pertaining to Crete. The Minoan period is the Cretan bronze age, roughly about 2500-1200 BC. Check out our website for a featured story from this week's episode, and be sure to follow us on Instagram (if that's your sort of thing). Titus 2:1 Paul's letters are incredibly down to earth. He was very concerned to ensure that everyone understood the basic elements of Christian doctrine. That is to say, they needed to know who God is and why he sent Jesus into the world to save us from our sins. But he also knew that Christian teaching needed to be turned into action. In this fascinating chapter, Paul guides his young friend Titus in the way in which he should teach and guide the church members. His guidance was coloured by gender and age in a very interesting way. The older men needed to live wisely and carefully, to have sound faith and to be full of love and patience, said Paul. The older women were told not to slander other people or be heavy drinkers, and were encouraged to train the younger women to love their husbands and their children. Young men were also encouraged to live wisely. Alongside offering this instruction, Paul urged Titus to be a good example by doing good works of every kind. Titus had his work cut out! Paul's teaching challenges us to reflect on what it means to serve God whatever our circumstances. We are, of course, all called to be loving, wise, patient and faithful but that will demand different things of us at different times. Christian leaders need to reflect carefully on the teaching they give, working out its practical implications for different people at different life stages. Living for Christ will mean very different things for teenagers, parents, singles, married people, the sick, the employed, the unemployed and the retired. Thoughtful, practical teaching will always need to sit alongside the personal example of the church leader. Paul described Titus as his true son - and we may presume that he was younger than many of the people in the Cretan churches. But everyone was looking to him, and he needed to ensure that he was walking closely with the Lord and setting a really good example. QUESTION What advice do you think needs to be given to people of your own age? PRAYER Lord God, help me to apply my Christian faith to the way in which I live for you today. Amen

Titus 1:15 These words may well feel familiar. They closely echo the words of Jesus when he said: “A good person produces the good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart” (Luke 6:45). Paul's particular challenge in Crete came from those who were insisting that all Christian men should be circumcised. This teaching was proving extremely destructive and was driving whole families away from the Church. Paul was convinced that the only reason they were teaching this was to make money. In response, he quoted a Cretan prophet, who said: “The people of Crete are all liars, cruel animals and lazy gluttons” (Titus 1:12). This sounds incredibly harsh, but Paul was desperate to protect the young church from those who were bent on its destruction. Paul was convinced that what mattered more than anything was the purity of a person's heart. If their heart was right, everything that flowed from them would be good. In 2 Samuel 12-13, we see that this was a lesson King David also had to learn. David was a good leader but, when he saw Bathsheba and desired her, his moral compass deserted him. Sin doesn't often come singly. David's adultery with Bathsheba led to a string of lies and, eventually, to the murder of her husband. Bad went to much, much worse – that is the nature of sin. After Nathan confronted King David, he cried out: “Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. Wash me clean from my guilt, purify me from my sin” (Psalm 51:1-2). David knew the only way back to God was to seek his forgiveness. After he had done this, he got his joy back and was able to serve God with a clear conscience. There is nothing more important than maintaining a pure heart. We need to seek God's forgiveness, renewal and strength every single day. QUESTION In what ways do you need to seek God's forgiveness today? PRAYER Lord God, thank you that you understand me completely and are able to purify me. Here and now, I confess my sins to you and seek your forgiveness. Amen

Hosted by Avivah Yamani, our Director. Today I will share a story from Bali, Indonesia about Corona Borealis. The story is part of the Stars of Asia Project during the International Year of Astronomy in 2009 and compiled by Mitsuru Aoki from Japan.  Corona Borealis is a small constellation in the Northern Celestial Hemisphere. The constellation has only four stars brighter than magnitude 3 and form a semicircular arc . It was first cataloged by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy in the 2nd century and remains one of the 88 modern constellations. Its Latin name for the constellation is “the northern crown” inspired by its shape, In classical mythology Corona Borealis generally represented the crown given by the god Dionysus to the Cretan princess Ariadne and set by her in the heavens.  Corona Borealis, the crown constellation, looks very different depending on where it is observed. When seen from Japan, it shines around the zenith in a “u” shape, when observed from Indonesia/Bali, the constellation appears in the North in a “n” shape, and for people in Bali, Indonesia, this constellation is known as a dented, upside-down cooking pot. It is said the Indonesian description originates from the actions of a careless and greedy couple…   We've added a new way to donate to 365 Days of Astronomy to support editing, hosting, and production costs.  Just visit: https://www.patreon.com/365DaysOfAstronomy and donate as much as you can! My friend suggested we both apply to this artist residency in Greece. When I looked at it, I noticed there was a fee to attend and I almost didn't apply – but then I thought about how much I'd love to be on Crete with my friend so I went ahead and submitted for it, hoping to maybe get one of the few fellowships they offer. About a month or so later, I got an email saying I was accepted to the residency and then another saying I had not received the Fellowship. And the worst part, my friend had not received an acceptance email. I was wondering if maybe I shouldn't go, even though these acceptances are rare. (Those of you who read this blog regularly probably have a sense of how rare.) Then I looked more closely at the details of the residency and discovered that it included a visit to an archeological site, excavated by a woman I'd done a ton of research about. I also discovered that we'd have an evening of learning Cretan circle dances – something I'd been looking for an opportunity to explore for a few years now. Suddenly, it felt like I really HAD to go. For my art, for one thing. These two things relate directly to the play I proposed working on there. I had no idea when I applied – and neither did they. It's the kind of synchronicity that makes art feel magical sometimes. To read more of It Feels Like Cheating, visit the Songs for the Struggling Artist blog. Art historian Matthew Milliner (Wheaton College) reflects on one of the most powerful and moving Christian icons: “The Virgin of the Passion,” AKA, “Our Lady of Perpetual Help,” which he develops in his book, Mother of the Lamb: The Story of a Global Icon. First painted as a response to failed Christian Empire and the violence of the Crusades, then mass produced and proliferated as a norm of Christian aesthetic worship, the icon offers a unique filter for contemporary understanding of faith and power; the Christian temptation to nationalism, empire, and violence; the meaning and visual expression of suffering love; and the beauty of engaged, solidarity and prophetic witness. This episode was made possible by a grant from the Tyndale House Foundation.Support the Yale Center for Faith & Culture's $25,000 End of Year Matching Campaign by giving online today: https://faith.yale.edu/giveShow NotesClick to view: “Virgin of the Passion, late 15th century” Andrea Rico di Candia, Cretan, active 1451–1492, tempera on wood panel (Princeton University Art Museum)Click to get a copy of Matthew Milliner's Mother of the Lamb: The Story of a Global IconAbout Matthew MillinerMatthew Milliner is Associate Professor of Art History at Wheaton College.
