The life of this week's final Scriblerian, Thomas Parnell, rounds out the picture of the entire Scriblerus club as a fraternity of wildly brilliant men all carrying some great pain or wound. Some of them clearly write out of that wound, while others seem to write in spite of it. Parnell straddles the line, and today's poem is a fine example of his blending of bright energy with a sharp edge. Happy reading.Thomas Parnell (11 September 1679 – 24 October 1718) was an Anglo-Irish poet and clergyman who was a friend of both Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift. He was born in Dublin, the eldest son of Thomas Parnell (died 1685) of Maryborough, Queen's County (now Portlaoise, County Laois), a prosperous landowner who had been a loyal supporter of Oliver Cromwell during the English Civil War and moved from Congleton, Cheshire to Ireland after the Restoration of Charles II. His mother was Anne Grice of Kilosty, County Tipperary: she also owned property in County Armagh, which she left to Thomas at her death in 1709. His parents married in Dublin in 1674. Thomas was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and collated as Archdeacon of Clogher in 1705. In the last years of the reign of Queen Anne of England he was a popular preacher, but her death put an end to his hope of career advancement. He married Anne (Nancy) Minchin, daughter of Thomas Minchin, who died in 1712, and had three children, two of whom died young. The third child, a girl, is said to have reached a great age. The marriage was a very happy one, and it has been said that Thomas never recovered from Nancy's early death. He spent much of his time in London, where he participated with Pope, Swift and others in the Scriblerus Club, contributing to The Spectator and aiding Pope in his translation of The Iliad. He was also one of the so-called "Graveyard poets": his 'A Night-Piece on Death,' widely considered the first "Graveyard School" poem, was published posthumously in Poems on Several Occasions, collected and edited by Alexander Pope and is thought by some scholars to have been published in December 1721. It is said of his poetry, "it was in keeping with his character, easy and pleasing, enunciating the common places with felicity and grace."-bio via Wikipedia This is a public episode. It's about recognizing and nurturing that creativity in everyday life. Congleton believes that creativity is as natural as breathing. Everyone possesses it, but often, people forget their innate artistic potential. Recognizing and nurturing this creativity can lead to personal fulfillment and innovation. Artists serve as conduits for expressing the human experience. They capture the essence of what it feels like to be alive at a particular moment in time, offering insights that go beyond mere information through all forms of art and expression. The digital age presents new challenges, such as the instant playback of music and the pervasive influence of social media. Artists must balance these tools with their creative instincts to maintain authenticity. Performing live offers a unique opportunity to connect with audiences in a shared, ephemeral experience. It allows artists to reinterpret their work and engage with listeners on a deeper level. From his astounding drum sounds to the aggressive guitar sounds he conjures, Congleton defines modern record production. Starting as a teenager in Dallas, Congleton studied and learned the craft of engineering from the ground up. While recording bands on the local scene he developed into an engineer of note. Soon he was being called to record projects as diverse as Kirk Franklin, Erykah Badu and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, all the while continuing to work with the local indie rock scene. Upon returning to Dallas, Congleton quickly established himself as the best producer in town. It was while working with the Polyphonic Spree he met Annie Clark, now better known as St. Vincent. Their partnership over six albums has won Grammy awards and been universally praised by critics as some of the most important music of our times. Now based in Los Angeles, Congleton continues to grow and flourish. In addition to the repeat business from long-time clients, he’s now established among the best of the best. Recent productions include Death Cab for Cutie, The Murder Capital, Tegan and Sara, Regina Spektor, Wallows, Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten and many more.

Imagine this: You've created tons of reports, and before you know it, you now have 300 reports with different data sets from different places. This is where Power BI steps in to help. Listen as Kim Congleton discusses the key features of Power BI and how they can help make data reporting a breeze. Essential points covered in this episode: ✔️ A fixed data structure is the key to efficiency. She taught herself how to use the software, but the data were conflicting. The solution was a fixed structure, workshops, and working together in applying the new method. ✔️Power BI is a front-end tool. It allows you to interact with backend data and make it presentable. Maximize the features of Power BI. Don't forget the basics, such as a set data structure, correct tables, and accurate calculations. ✔️ Use visuals to relay information. Reading through multiple spreadsheets with so much data can be a headache. Diagrams like bar graphs and pie charts can make reading data easier for users. This can help you notice recurring trends like late payments or extra expenses and even see inconsistencies quickly. ✔️ Power BI is so much more than a reporting tool. You can now embed Power Apps into a Power BI report so you can interact and analyze the data at the same time. Microsoft is set on adding even more features to Power BI. Are you ready to experience ease in data reporting? In just a moment, you'll meet Ben Congleton — Founder of Olark, a live chat software and data tool that serves colleges and universities of all shapes and sizes. Growing up, Ben wanted to be a professor like his father before him. And while he completed both a bachelors and masters degree from Virginia Tech and started his PhD at the University of Michigan, Ben ultimately realized that he was a bit more interested in business than in higher education. So he decided to pursue one of the many business ideals he had noodled on for a few years. After starting a webhosting company, Ben realized that there was a dearth of great website chat tools – and he had this vision of making chat software that was as easily to install on a website as Google Analytics. And it was this idea that granted access to Olark (which was called Habla at the time) to Y Combinator, the most famous and prestigious of startup accelerators. So, he and his founding team moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and that's where things really started to take off. Tune in to hear the story of how Ben ended up living in Elon Musk's house next door to an apartment that Mark Zuckerburg had rented and ultimately bootstrapped the company to success. We're taking a break from the dream pop resurgence of the 2010s to reminisce over one of Quentin's favorite indie rock records from our high school years: Ambulance LTD's "LP" from 2004. With a frontman in constant struggle to keep his band together, and a bankrupt record label preventing him from releasing new material, Marcus Congleton's Ambulance LTD was rather short-lived. Though they may not have had enough time to evolve their sound and bring it to maturity, a band that once said "their niche is not sticking to any particular niche" somehow managed to release one of the better guitar pop records from 2004; a true gem in the era of cookie cutter indie pop.Tracklist: Primitive (The Way I Treat You) Ophelia Sugar Pill Sugar Pill (demo version) Stay Tuned Drug Cabin - Steely Dad Visit tiestatea.com and use promo code NOFILLER15 for 15% off at checkout. This show is part of the Pantheon Podcast network.
