As a beer enthusiast, bottle shops have always played an important role in my life. They were there when I first got into beer in a big way, supplying me with hard to find bottles imported from the United States, or new releases from some of the most exciting new breweries in the UK. It was through them that I also met some of my most valued friends and peers, including Jen Ferguson and Glenn Williams of South London's Hop Burns and Black, who gave me one of my first breaks as a beer writer with a monthly column published on their website. When we launched Pellicle in 2019, they were there to sponsor us for our first two years. Looking back, we probably wouldn't have made it through those first 24 months without their support. Then there's Phill and Steph Palgrave-Elliott of Caps and Taps in Tufnell Park. Not only did they give me my first ever gig as a freelance photographer, but like Jen and Glenn they became wonderful pals, and are also long time supporters of the magazine. It's through both of their shops that I gleaned a deep perspective of how important bottle shops once were within the beer ecosystem. Here is where you came when you wanted to support local and independent, or when you wanted to find the latest fussed-over cans, or simply something delicious from a brewery you were yet to discover. But things have changed a lot since those early days of craft beer—the early 2010s when everything felt shiny and new. Breweries came and went, some sold out, some focused on shifting units in national supermarket chains, and—after the pandemic—most of them started shipping direct to their customers. The role of the bottle shop shouldn't have changed, but the industry changed around them, forcing them to pivot and adapt. Some became bars, some focused on online retail, others simply weren't able to compete, and closed their doors forever.Without them, however, we probably would have the vibrant selection of independent breweries we're blessed with today. In this episode of The Pellicle Podcast I'm joined by the owners of three different UK bottleshops: Krishan Rajput of Stirchley Wines in Birmingham, Sam Parker of Keg Cask and Bottle in Prestwich, Manchester, plus Rosie and Greg Start, who run R&G's Beer Vault in both Macclesfield and Congleton. Glenn Williams shares that he has two invisible disabilities, one of them being type 1 diabetes which he has dealt with since he was 15 years old. The speakers discuss their experiences with restaurants improperly handling the presence of service dogs, giving specific examples of illegal acts committed by restaurants. Mr. Williams recalls an unpleasant experience where he was yelled at by someone for having a service dog with him in a store, demonstrating the challenges faced by those with invisible disabilities. He is Level 2 IFS trained and has presented his use of the IFS model inside prisons at multiple IFS annual conferences and has written articles in the IFS newsletter, The Outlook. In 2002, he founded the Jericho Circle Project, a non-profit organization that seeks to 'bring down the walls' by creating men's support groups in correctional facilities.  Since the project began, almost 1000 incarcerated men have sat in Jericho Circles in county, state, and federal correctional institutions in Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island. Glenn participated in the Jericho groups when he was incarcerated for 21 years and later met Steve in a different context. Glenn now 'pays it forward' with his organization, Our House Boston. Glenn is Level One IFS trained and is passionate about spreading the word about our True Essence, especially to black men in urban settings. Glenn is a reentry advocate and community investor who works with various individuals, families, organizations and businesses to raise awareness about and create solutions to the challenges of incarceration and prisoner reintegration. Can flipping properties provide good returns? Is being a licensed agent or a broker a disadvantage when you invest in properties? Is finding leads for flipping properties easy?  Glenn Williams has been investing in real estate for over 25 years.  He started out in rentals while working a day job, buying small multifamily properties.  Living in one unit and renting out the other unit, he got into real estate full time doing rentals, wholesaling, and being a Real Estate Agent in 2003.  He gave up real estate and went back into a day job in 2006 when it seemed to him that everything was amiss in the real estate market.  Got back into real estate full time rehabbing houses and continuing to hold rentals in 2012.  Glenn currently runs Twin REIA, K&G Investments, LLC, and a virtual project management company REI Project Management. We talked about the multi-point inspection, what it includes and how you get one free with every service visit; how many miles should you really be changing your oil & rotating your tires; and how to know if there's been a recall on your vehicle. Both gentlemen talked about their respective dealerships and the important role customer service plays in their success. They also told us about an upcoming Car Care Clinic happening mid-October.
