Summary Each fall, the beautiful, rich, purple blooms of ironweeds (Vernonia spp.) grace fields and open areas throughout much of the eastern U.S. They are an ecological powerhouse for pollinators and wildlife, including a specialist bee. Ironweeds can make amazing additions to our native plant gardens where they serve as biodiversity magnets. In this episode, we discuss Mt. Cuba Center's Vernonia Report which includes information about how multiple ironweed species performed in the garden trials, the importance of garden soils and conditions to plant growth and health, how plant health can impact pollinator use, and potential management techniques. Today's guest Sam Hoadley is the Manager of Horticultural Research at Mt. Cuba Center where he evaluates native plant species, old and new cultivars, and hybrids in the Trial Garden. 3 things you'll learn from this episode: Insights into the diversity and ecological value of ironweeds, including their ability to attract a specialist bee and other pollinators. The importance of selecting the right ironweed species for specific soil conditions, including some standout performers for average mid-Atlantic garden soils. Pros and potential cons of management techniques like the Chelsea Chop to control plant height. Resources Sam mentioned: Vernonia trial report Previous trial reports Mt. Hey folks, welcome to another episode of The Mind of a Skeptical Lefist. This time around I talked to Chris Scully of the podcast Ironweeds and the band Zombie Giuliani. We covered a lot of ground in this chat but for length I did have to cut a little bit because we went so long. We talked about his podcast and co-hosts a little bit, anarchism, social ecology, the environmental crisis that we're facing, and so much more. Ironweeds is a podcast where the hosts discuss current events and news items and analyze them using a leftist framework. While the format is fairly common, the hosts of Ironweeds are not. They are clever, funny, knowledgeable people with an obvious care for the well being of others. I highly recommend you check it out. And if you like punk then check out Chris' band Zombie Giuliani, I can't say that I'm a big punk fan but I do enjoy listening to Chris' band. This week we've got some local and national stories that are certain to restore your faith in the democratic system. J/k, this is Ironweeds, you know what you're in for. District 2 City Councilor Kim Ashe-McPherson has resigned after pleading guilty to felony ballot fraud. Local activists have been arrested after protesting police brutality at the Albany courthouse and releasing cockroaches into the building. Howard Schultz shocks the world by saying he'll never support the Starbucks Union… and really this is Bernie's fault because if Hillary had won she would have made Schultz head of the Department of Labor and he would have certainly learned the value of workers' rights. A man is suing American Airlines after they reported his name to police for shoplifting, landing him in jail for 17 days with no explanation. Just another week of upbeat content from your buddies at Ironweeds! Is the planet dying, or just trying to buck us like an angry bronco? Did climate change cause the South Florida condo collapse, or was it actually democracy? We talk about how these crises will keep speeding up, and our responses to them are outdated and counter-productive. Also, we must once again distance ourselves from President Biden after he has reauthorized a law that will lead to more jail time for non-violent drug offenders (where's our promises kept??). The Boy Scouts of America have been accused of sexually abusing more than 80,000 boys, and despite what they knew, they did little to prevent it.
