Mavis Gallant is best known for her short stories, 116 of which were first published in the New Yorker. Extraordinarily varied and prolific, she arranged her life around the solitary pleasure of writing while battling extreme self-doubt. Tessa Hadley joins Joanne O'Leary to discuss her recent review of 44 previously uncollected Gallant stories and her own forthcoming selection for Pushkin Press. They explore what makes Gallant a ‘writer's writer', where her reporting and fiction intersect, and why her novels fail where her short stories succeed.Find further reading on the episode page: https://lrb.me/gallantpod Hosted on Acast. Our first interview, “Four Days in October,” focused on the intense deliberations that took place behind closed doors regarding the possibility of Israel responding to its stronger adversary first, Hezbollah in Lebanon, rather than Hamas in the Gaza Strip. If you have not heard or seen that interview, you can find it here. For the second interview in our series with General Gallant, we focused on the most difficult aspect of this war - the hostages in Gaza and the efforts to bring them home.Yoav Gallant served as Israel's Defense Minister from 2022 until 2024. He was fired by Benjamin Netanyahu twice in those two years, first in 2023, when massive protests in Israel led Netanyahu to reverse his decision, then again in November of 2024. Gallant is a member of Netanyahu's Likud party. His military career spans five decades, beginning in 1977 as a naval commando in Shayetet 13, and serving as chief of the IDF's Southern Command during Operation Cast Lead, an early war with Hamas that lasted from late 2008 to early 2009. We're back to talk about ANOTHER prequel to The Exorcist (afilm so nice they had to tell the origin twice), but fortunately, this week Mike and Stephen are here to talk about the good one. Yes indeed, this week we're here to talk about the most expensive DVD feature of all time, the completedvision of Paul Schrader's Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist. It's the Gallant to Harlin's Goofy, and as one might expect from a Schrader jam, it's a contemplative rumination on man's fallibility and culpability with regards toevil. It's certainly not the rock ‘em sock ‘em straight forward horror movie Morgan Creek anticipated, leading to it being shelved for The Beginning. Perhaps a horror crowd that's been raised on the sort of character studies A24has delivered over the past decade would be more receptive to the quiet character drama and standout performance from its lead Stellan Skarsgard delivered as a conflicted Father Merrin. This week we're talking about Renny Harlin's The Exorcist: The Beginning because we're contractually obligated to due to the format of the show. Mike and Stephen are here to talk about hot moms, the 1995 coming of age movie Angus, (featuring not one but TWO Oscar winners), the Angus soundtrack, what makes up the weakest entry in the Back to the Future series, whether or not Paul Schrader directed Clifford the Big Red Dog, the latest addition to our soundboard and so much more. All right, we talk about the movie a little bit, and ask the question whether it is better to be a serviceable, feels like it's made for television feature, or a wild swing and massive miss like The Heretic? Plus, we ask the question: Has there ever been a successful exorcism in any of The Exorcist movies? Ultimately, The Beginning is “The Goofus” to Dominion's “Gallant”: a big, dumb, spectacle of a movie with poorly rendered, early aughts CGI that passes a couple hours but has all the lasting power of a stick of Juicy Fruit gum. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for February 13, 2025 is: gallant GAL-unt adjective Someone or something described as gallant is very courageous and brave. Gallant is also sometimes used to mean “large and impressive” (as in “a gallant ship”), or to describe someone who has or shows politeness and respect for women. // Though they failed to reach the summit, the mountaineering team made a gallant attempt. See the entry > Examples: “He turned to go, and was promptly whacked across the backside by Miss Chokfi. ‘Ouch?' he said. ‘What was that for?' She was standing up very straight and gallant, though it still left her a foot and a half shorter than him, with the office stapler ready by her hand. ‘That was for not stopping him,' she said. ‘Was there anything else you need?' ‘Not a thing,' said Barrow, and tipped his hat to her.” — Francis Spufford, Cahokia Jazz: A Novel, 2024 Did you know? If you're familiar with the long-running comic strip “Goofus and Gallant,” created by Garry Cleveland Myers and published in the monthly children's magazine Highlights, you likely have a particularly good sense of the meaning of the adjective gallant. In the comic, the character of Goofus demonstrates to young readers all sorts of bad habits and behaviors, while Gallant provides examples of proper conduct and comportment when in circumstances similar to those of his ill-mannered counterpart. The characters' names were, of course, chosen with purpose. We record several different senses of gallant and all are compliments. Someone described as gallant may be smartly dressed, courteous and chivalrous, or valiant and brave. Goofus, bless his heart, is none of these things (while we do not define the adjective goofus, the Oxford English Dictionary does: “stupid, foolish”). Perhaps ironically, gallant comes from the Middle French verb galer, meaning “to squander in pleasures”; such squandering is something Goofus is likely to do, and Gallant never would.

In this episode of ”Call Me Back”, we hear the behind the scenes story of the war with Hamas and Hezbollah from Yoav Gallant, who served as Israel's Defense Minister for the first 13 months of this 16-month war. In his first English-language interview since the war began, the former Defense Minister offers an intimate account of the war's initial hours and days, with an emphasis on one date that could have changed it all: October 11th, 2023. This episode is the first in a series of interviews we will be posting with General Gallant, chronicling the historic and unprecedented events of the last 16 months. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. US bureau chief Jacob Magid joins host Jessica Steinberg on today's show. Magid discusses why former defense minister Yoav Gallant resigned from the Knesset, which appears to be primarily due to his opposition to legislation that would allow ultra-Orthodox men exemptions from army service. The move is somewhat confusing, given that Gallant's vote could have made a difference regarding certain legislation, but he seems to be leaving as a political move, to cement his future possibilities. Magid looks at why the hostage talks are reported to have stalled, with obstacles that included Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's not offering a viable alternative as to who would fill the void of Hamas leadership in Gaza, and the Hamas stance that it can't locate all the remaining hostages held in Gaza. He also reviews a Palestinian Authority crackdown on armed terror groups in Jenin in the northern West Bank, and its relationship to the fall of Assad to rebel groups in Syria. Criticism of the Palestinian Authority's activity was broadcast on Al Jazeera, and the news channel was then barred temporarily from the West Bank. Dr. Sultany also expands on the international legal actions being taken to hold Israel to account within the context of the double standards that have historically existed within international justice mechanisms. It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma speak with Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the indefinite cancellation of Trump's hush money sentencing, Trump's cabinet of rapists and fraudsters, the MTG-Musk-Ramaswamy connection, the House's passage of the non-profit killer bill, Schumer's weak politics, the divide between US-Israel and the rest of the international order over the ICC's charges, Bolsonaro's criminal charges, and UAW action in Kentucky, before parsing a little deeper through the vastly different responses to the ICC's charges against Netanyahu, Gallant, and others, with an adamant defense of genocide from the Biden administration rebuked both internationally and domestically. Digby then joins, as she, Sam, and Emma first reflect on their gut reactions to Trump's second presidential victory, the distinctions between their responses to 2016 and 2024, and the particular feeling of defeat for the feminist movement as an anti-abortion candidate begins to name his overwhelmingly predatory cabinet. Shifting more toward the policy impact of a second Trump term, Digby dives into the major threat of a “competent” Trump administration, backed by four years of drafting the blueprint for Project 2025, and what to make of growing tensions between Trump and the Senate, be it over leadership or cabinet appointments, expanding on that latter element by assessing the major (and controversial) roles to be played by potential cabinet members Pete Hegseth and Russ Vought. The three of them also touch on the major backing Trump has in the financial power of Elon Musk, and the evolution of the GOP's clamor for power, before Sam and Emma wrap up the free half with some ancient (as in a mere 8 years ago) comments from RFK about one Donald Trump. And in the Fun Half: Emma dives deep into the impressive progressive representation coming out of Georgia, from the Senate to local politics, with some help from DSA Aaron from Atlanta, before briefly touching on the evolution of the Biden-Netanyahu relationship and what the future of a Trump-Netanyahu alliance will mean for the fight for a free Palestine. The MR Team also highlights Stavros Halkias' strong appearance with Theo Von, talks with Jake the Teacher about New York's conservative shift and the future of the governor's race, and unpacks the rampant bigotry of Nancy Mace and the right's desire to put queer people back in the closet, plus, your calls and IMs! We speak with the celebrated Palestinian human rights lawyer Raji Sourani after the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
Early reports (now disputed) that Russia responded to UK Storm Shadow attacks on Russian territory with the battle launch of an Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) for the first time in history continues to race the world toward nuclear war. In the waning days of the Biden presidency, how far will the warmongers go? Also today, Netanyahu and Gallant may need to adjust their travel plans after an ICC indictment.
