HEAVY Music Interviews
Bringing The Heat With JEREMY SOSVILLE From SANHEDRIN

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersNew York trio SANHEDRIN released their long-awaited new full-length, Heat Lightning, last Friday via Metal Blade Records.SANHEDRIN has spent the last decade at the forefront of the American heavy metal scene blending traditional metal and hard rock sounds with a fresh modern energy and perspective. With 2022's critically lauded Lights On full-length, the band had created their most complete work to date. With their follow-up, Heat Lightning, the band delivers a diverse collection of songs that wholly captures their wide array of influences with an elevated level of production.“Sonically, there's no comparison,” notes drummer Nathan Honor when asked how Heat Lightning compares to the band's previous efforts. “Heat Lightning is the fullest representation of the power of this band. When you take three seasoned musicians with their favourite handpicked instruments, put them in front of two brilliant producer/engineers in a studio stacked with incredible equipment and no outside distractions, this is what you get.”Unlike the previous three albums, which were all tracked and mixed by ColinMarston, for Heat Lightning SANHEDRIN opted to work with a fresh set of ears in a new environment. In doing so, the band landed at the legendary Utopia Bearsville studio in Woodstock, New York. At the helm for recording and co-producing were Matt Brown (Life of Agony, A Pale Horse Named Death) and Jerry Farley (Sick Of It All, Madball).Heat Lightning gets its title from the second track of the same name. “Heat lightning is a flash of lightning from very far away, sometimes seen in a clear sky,” says vocalist/bassist Erica Stoltz. “It is used as a metaphor for where we see ourselves at the moment in relation to climate change. Collectively, we have moved further away from our direct relationship to nature and have adopted a paternal relationship with the natural world, as if we have control. It was one of the first songs written for the album, and one of the most dynamic tracks the band has ever written."Elsewhere, The Fight Of Your Life is a tribute to those we call “lifers” in the music business. “It's about the compulsion to play music no matter what. When you get the bug, and you have it for life, it is your north star, your reason to be,” says Stoltz. Franklin County Line is the fastest song on the record, and inspired guitarist Jeremy Sosville's hometown and surrounding area in northern New York state. Sosville recounts, “Erica and Nathan came up to visit me and work on new music. In the process, we wrote a song inspired by the local Amish population but with a naughty twist.”The record commences with Blind Wolf, a hard-rocking, heavy metal stomper and the record's lead single. Lyrically, the song is inspired by the band's shared fascination with cults. According to Stoltz, “The blind wolf symbolizes losing your animal instincts as a result of adopting someone else's belief system.” The song is straightforward, pounding, and delivered with ill intent. “We knew as soon as the song was complete that it should open the record,” says Sosville. “It really sets the tone for the journey the listener is about to take with this album.”HEAVY caught up with Sosville to find out more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Today on Too Opinionated, we sit down with Author and Screenwriter Lynne Stoltz about her new project.  “Sons 2 The Grave” filmed in Atlanta, Georgia, tells the story of basketball phenom, Marcus Jennings. With one foot in Hudson and one in the NBA, Marcus is taken out. After midnight on a footbridge that separates the million-dollar homes of the rich, famous and the politically connected from subsidized housing, Marcus Jennings is shot twice in the head. A message sent to the community. A code of silence remains in place, fostering a common element that binds this community, fear and the currency of payback will always be bloodshed. We are our brother's keeper is just a slogan in Hudson. Ruth Jennings moved to Hudson for her son, his school regularly visited by scouts. A strong, hardworking single mother, she thought she could protect her child against all odds & choices, but Marcus found it hard to fight off his new surroundings and mislaid loyalties. Marcus thought he was in control. A boy living in a man's body, living up to his and others exaggerated egos. He attracted the attention of scouts, agents, and Division 1 NCAA schools in the US, a pitstop before the NBA. Marcus also attracted the attention of RD. RD controlled Hudson and worked for those who controlled him. In the end it was what they all had in common that ended Marcus's life…fear. Fear of staying, fear of leaving and fear of appearing weak. Murder is a sin. There is no justification… but there is understanding. “We're born sons and we die sons. Somewhere in between is the story.” Ruth Jennings believes God sees all. There is nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. But for now, there is Hudson. “Sons 2 The Grave” tells that story. Have Faith Productions is currently preparing for a television series, “Hudson” inspired by the film, with music from Hip hop/ R&B royalty. The episodes will echo a line from the movie, “This Ain't No Fairy Tale… This Is Hudson.” The episodes will take you into the heart of the city from upscale streets to back alleys, social status not always pre-determining who turns up where. HUDSON captures the politics and the temperament of the city in raw and truthful episodes. As producers and writers, we need to tell the stories that hold us accountable to the reality of the truth, not just what feels comfortable. The police drama takes you inside the 34th precinct, it's heartbeat sometimes on life support. The officers and detectives like the rest of us are flawed. Most conceal their personal fears and demons, visiting them on their own terms, not letting them take over. But there is a point when some officers break, or yes, come broken to the job. Their safety net, stretched as it is, an eager young pastor assigned to the precinct, who's faith is fully intact, a seasoned but weary shrink whose faith has long been scarred and a Captain who makes the hard decisions whatever side of the blue line they fall on. “HUDSON” deals with relationships that run as high up the ladder as City Hall. Mayor Ron Langston came from the wrong side of the bridge to take office, a move some say is merely geography. His loyalty to popular club owner/entrepreneur and childhood friend, Quincy “Q” Harris, a man comfortable on both sides of the bridge, is a source of constant concern for his supporters. HFP looks forward to the next leg of the journey. Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod. (Please Subscribe)

Hi and welcome to the OWN IT podcast, where we celebrate the growing number of (women and non-binary) ad agency owners and talk about buying out of the boys' club of advertising, one agency at a time.  Today, we're talking to Jaime Ekman of the Stoltz Marketing Group. That agency was started by Ken Stoltz, Jaime's father. So her path to ownership is a bit different than many agency owners. But it's even more complicated than just growing up in the agency world. Mr. Stoltz was diagnosed with brain cancer and Jaime came to the business from working elsewhere out of necessity to help manage the business. I think we can all imagine the difficulty of that transition, but after about six months into her taking over a leadership role, her father passed. Jaime talks about taking over a team that wasn't her own, building one that shared her vision and the success she is now experiencing after a five-year journey to reset the agency both differently from, and in honor of, her father.  There are so many incredible lessons in this episode. Jaime is a true leader and inspiration. This is certainly an emotional conversation, but I feel so blessed to have had it. I know you will share in that once you listen. Talkhouse Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 18, 2022 55:01 Very Popular

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a pair of old friends with a ton of records and history between them: Kelley Stoltz and Spiral Stairs. Spiral Stairs—aka. Scott Kannberg—is a founding member of indie-rock kingpins Pavement, a band he formed in Stockton, California with his high school friend Stephen Malkmus. What started as a noisy, ramshackle outfit bloomed into one of the most important and influential bands of the 1990s. Their albums have only grown in stature over the years, getting the sort of deluxe reissue treatment that was once reserved only for the gods of classic rock. And though Pavement split up in 1999, they've reunited twice—and are about to launch a pretty hefty tour of the US and Europe. Outside of Pavement, Kannberg has kept plenty busy releasing music under both his Spiral Stairs moniker and, for a while, as Preston School of Industry. He's had an incredibly prolific last few years, too, releasing three albums since 2017—the latest is the fantastic Medley Attack!!! It was a record born of some hardship, including Covid, worldwide relocations, and most unfortunately, the sudden death of Kannberg's bassist Matt Harris. But those events resulted in what's probably his best solo outing yet. Check out a little bit of the song “Pressure Drop (End of the Hurricane)” right here. Kannberg enlisted the help of several friends in making that record, including the other half of today's conversation, singer-songwriter Kelley Stoltz. Stoltz is one of those guys who just has a knack for writing incredibly tuneful pop songs. If they were recorded with more slickness, you might mistake them for radio hits of the ‘60s and ‘70s—I mean that as a high compliment. Stoltz recently released his seventeenth studio album, The Stylist, and it's a great place to start in a catalog that includes plenty of stone classics. Check out “Your Name Escapes Me.” As you'll hear in this conversation—though not necessarily in either of those songs—Stoltz and Kannberg first bonded over a mutual love of Echo & The Bunnymen. Stoltz actually recorded a full album cover of that band's Crocodiles album, and Kannberg joined him on some live shows to perform it. Weirdly, that led to Stoltz, who as a teen worshiped Ian McCulloch, to a brief stint as rhythm guitarist for the British band. Talk about Echo leads to talk about copycat haircuts of their youth, formative years working in record stores, and lots more. And you'll even get to hear two songs in very early stages—one that Kannberg (maybe) wants to bring to his Pavement bandmates, and one that Stoltz has started writing for his infant daughter. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Kelley Stoltz and Scott Kannberg for chatting. If you liked what you heard, check out both of their new albums, and of course follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by The Range. See you next time!
