His Girl Friday Movie Night: Alt-Valentine's Romantic Comedy in a Vintage Theater (For Sleep or Love)

uncommon ambience

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 14, 2026 110:06

We're back in the old movie house for a vintage alt-Valentines romcom. Arrive early for the trailers — what I would play at some alt-Valentines film festival. Plus, decades-old Valentines‑flavored messaging it's going to be grand.Look, my daughter asked if I was doing a special episode for the upcoming "holiday," and I was like, "What holiday?""Valentines, did you get mom something."“I am now,” Valentine's… aka **** Halloween. Another holiday to unleash sugar onto our loved ones and watch them climb the ceiling...Our feature film is His Girl Friday, which stars Cary Grant as ruthless newspaper editor Walter Burns. You are already familiar with Grant's character as the “Get Out” meme.Rosalind Russell, the pride of Waterbury, CT, plays Hildy Johnson, star journalist. And I need to pause for a second — the movie is based on the play The Front Page, which has two male leads. In His Girl Friday Russell plays that lead and walks out of production for defining the cinematic accomplished female journalist (think Margot Kidder as Lois Lane). So if Russell is not the pride of Waterbury, CT, she should be. And for heaven's sake, don't try to figure out what the deal is with the giant cross marking the eastern side of the Brass City skyline (do you imagine a knee-high ghost town might creep you out)? From Waterbury, let's take I‑84 west and then north on the Thruway (or the Taconic Parkway if you're in the mood for beauty and can drive 55) to Albany, the pride of New York. Heh — I'm still a 518-er by heart. Long live Fish Fry spots and Altamont Fair.Any movie where Albany, NY, figures prominently is my kind of movie. In His Girl Friday, Albany winds up being the destination all along. Walter Burns' motivations in the movie are to rescue Hildy Johnson from a languished life in Albany, NY. And after winning Hildy back, Walter immediately takes her to Albany for their honeymoon. The film is fast-paced and even breaks the fourth wall a few times. Good stuff — two Ironweeds up.In the spirit of tough ladies (but unfortunately not Albany-centric), we have our first trailer for Some Kind of Wonderful: “…this is 1987. Did you know that a girl can be whatever she wants to be?” Mary Stuart Masterson's character asks, as she deals with some doofus named Ray. Gawd, I had such a crush on that character growing up — Stoltz, you idiot. And as mentioned at the top, a slew of other trailers I would consider alt-love stuff (in one case, explicitly because of the soundtrack). And, of course, I'm alt-signaling. I loathe Valentine's Day. Besides selling chocolate and flowers, the holiday seems designed to exasperate loneliness and force wide one's wallet.I don't know about y'all, but I'm still wrestling with the debt of the trinity of expensive American holidays just last year. Did that giant turkey dinner or flat screen under a gayly lit fake tree not say, "I love you?"PS: Hamilton needs more Albany — Alexander married in with the Schuylers. The Burr “Dangerous Man” letter that boiled over the Burr feud was printed in the Albany Register — a ****** Van Rensselaer is mentioned in that letter. You couldn't get more Albany without a beaver and Henry Hudson.Bleh — Albany should steal the logo of Alexander Hamilton doing the “Oh, oh, oh, what a feeling” Toyota jump off the top of the Hamilton star. Put it on the welcome to Albany sign with: "actually we killed Alexander Hamilton."

As we approach a new year, Pastor Dalton invites us to reflect honestly on what we have been carrying that God never intended us to hold. Through Scripture and personal stories, this message reminds us that every major move of God begins with leaving something behind. From Abraham and Moses to Ruth and the disciples, God consistently calls His people to step away from what is familiar, comfortable, or defining and to place their trust fully in Him.In this message, we are challenged to leave behind hopelessness, anger and bitterness, and unforgiveness, and to embrace a life of surrender. This is not about trying harder or making resolutions. It is about giving our lives over to a faithful God who offers mercy for the past, grace for today, and hope for the future as we walk into the new year with Him.

Local Government New Zealand Vice-President and Gisborne Mayor Rehette Stoltz told Heather du Plessis Allan they've taken a more detailed look into costings over the whole ten years than they previously had. In episode 498 I discuss how the filming of the movie Back to the Future started during a Mercury retrograde period, and the production experienced notorious delays, including firing the lead actor after 6 weeks of filming. By examining the challenges and ultimate success of the film, we can gain a deeper understanding of what Mercury retrograde truly means in astrology. The story begins with the filmmakers, Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis, who, after years of developing the script, had their hearts set on Michael J. Fox for the lead role of Marty McFly. When Fox was unavailable, they moved forward with another actor, Eric Stoltz. Filming commenced in late November 1984, precisely as Mercury was slowing down to station retrograde. Mercury retrogrades are often associated with delays, revisions, and the need to redo things. The initial weeks of filming with Stoltz proved to be a prime example of these themes, as his more serious interpretation of the role clashed with the comedic vision of the filmmakers. This led to the difficult and highly unusual decision to recast the lead role in the middle of production. The story of Back to the Future's creation, with its delays and necessary do-overs, serves as a powerful real-world example of Mercury retrograde in action, teaching us that sometimes we must go back to the past to correct our course in order to create a better future. Join me as I break down the astrological timeline of these events and discuss the broader lessons we can learn about navigating our own Mercury retrograde periods. Today on Too Opinionated, we sit down with Author and Screenwriter Lynne Stoltz about her new project.  “Sons 2 The Grave” filmed in Atlanta, Georgia, tells the story of basketball phenom, Marcus Jennings. With one foot in Hudson and one in the NBA, Marcus is taken out. After midnight on a footbridge that separates the million-dollar homes of the rich, famous and the politically connected from subsidized housing, Marcus Jennings is shot twice in the head. A message sent to the community. A code of silence remains in place, fostering a common element that binds this community, fear and the currency of payback will always be bloodshed. We are our brother's keeper is just a slogan in Hudson. Ruth Jennings moved to Hudson for her son, his school regularly visited by scouts. A strong, hardworking single mother, she thought she could protect her child against all odds & choices, but Marcus found it hard to fight off his new surroundings and mislaid loyalties. Marcus thought he was in control. A boy living in a man's body, living up to his and others exaggerated egos. He attracted the attention of scouts, agents, and Division 1 NCAA schools in the US, a pitstop before the NBA. Marcus also attracted the attention of RD. RD controlled Hudson and worked for those who controlled him. In the end it was what they all had in common that ended Marcus's life…fear. Fear of staying, fear of leaving and fear of appearing weak. Murder is a sin. There is no justification… but there is understanding. “We're born sons and we die sons. Somewhere in between is the story.” Ruth Jennings believes God sees all. There is nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. But for now, there is Hudson. “Sons 2 The Grave” tells that story. Have Faith Productions is currently preparing for a television series, “Hudson” inspired by the film, with music from Hip hop/ R&B royalty. The episodes will echo a line from the movie, “This Ain't No Fairy Tale… This Is Hudson.” The episodes will take you into the heart of the city from upscale streets to back alleys, social status not always pre-determining who turns up where. HUDSON captures the politics and the temperament of the city in raw and truthful episodes. As producers and writers, we need to tell the stories that hold us accountable to the reality of the truth, not just what feels comfortable. The police drama takes you inside the 34th precinct, it's heartbeat sometimes on life support. The officers and detectives like the rest of us are flawed. Most conceal their personal fears and demons, visiting them on their own terms, not letting them take over. But there is a point when some officers break, or yes, come broken to the job. Their safety net, stretched as it is, an eager young pastor assigned to the precinct, who's faith is fully intact, a seasoned but weary shrink whose faith has long been scarred and a Captain who makes the hard decisions whatever side of the blue line they fall on. “HUDSON” deals with relationships that run as high up the ladder as City Hall. Mayor Ron Langston came from the wrong side of the bridge to take office, a move some say is merely geography. His loyalty to popular club owner/entrepreneur and childhood friend, Quincy “Q” Harris, a man comfortable on both sides of the bridge, is a source of constant concern for his supporters. HFP looks forward to the next leg of the journey. Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod. (Please Subscribe)
